Went to City Donuts for the first time today, and was blown away. Their vanilla creme filled Long-john with delicious chocolate glaze is the best in Denver- no contest. I also had their bear claw which is phenomenal and also the pastry design is delightful. The donuts are light and fluffy, and melt in your mouth. I also love that they do all the classics without gimmicks. The donuts are simple, with bold flavors, fresh and yummy! It's a donut, about the same as Safeway or King Sooners but without the strict food handling process at the grocery store. These donuts are made in Aurora, then the guy packs up the trunk of his car and takes them to the Colfax location. Ask to see the trunk of his car!!! Happy eating people! read more

Finally!! A doughnut shop that lives up to my admittedly very high expectations. I like Voodoo doughnuts, but they use an over-abundance of frosting. This place does not-- they understand that the magic of the doughnut isn't in what kind of crap you put on top, but the doughnut itself. The apple fritter I got was nearly perfect, good flavor, not overly sweet with sugar coating. It had real apple chunks. Surprisingly most places don't put any fruit in their fritters, which kind of defeats the purpose of calling them by the fruit names... well, I digress. I also tried the bear claw, which may well have been the best bear claw I've ever had. It had apple pie filling! Love it! read more

Small shop on E Colfax serving fresh, not so basic, but also not over the top donuts, was right up my alley. Personally I like glazed, chocolate cake and maybe the occasional blueberry cake, nothing too crazy. Today I enjoyed the glazed sprinkled with peanuts and the chocolate cake chocolate glazed sprinkled with coconut. The glazed donut was the perfect texture of soft and slightly chewy. The glaze and peanuts created a sweet and savory combination I'll be coming back for. The chocolate glazed was also delicious and not overly rich. The coconut flavor was only slight, but I did enjoy the additional texture. read more

The hubs got a glazed, chocolate topped glazed and a coffee as well. Sat at the hi top counter and people watched enjoying our morning snack. This place is unpretentious...ok, it's a dive! But what do you want from a donut place? The donuts are great and much cheaper than the fancy "artisanal" donut places that are popular right now. Shouldn't a donut shop smell like donuts and coffee? Bummer was hoping for great things out of this place, but donuts are extremely sweet and crumbly, and nothing is being cooked there so it smells like old paint and not welcoming. If you want people to love it then make the place smell like warm pastries and coffee, maybe offer a bagel and breakfast sandwich or two and make some food in house (and coffee) so it doesn't smell like old paint and stale smoke. Also seems like no owner is there that cares, just seems like the person working is just there...new business = hungry owner, hungrier people...right? Hoping this is just growing pains, this area will totally embrace city donuts if they embrace the concept but until then I will just keep walking or driving by....PLEASE MAKE SOME CHANGES we want to love you! read more
