These donuts are delicious! One of the best maple bars I have ever had - not to sweet and pillowy soft and light! There were 6 of us who visited City Donuts after a nice healthy walk on a Sunday morning - I know, sort of defeats the purpose, but we saw a mom and her kids in the park munching on them and had to get our own! Everyone in our group had something different and none of us were disappointed, well one of us was, but that was because they were out of all of their filled varieties and so we'll just have to go back. These donuts taste like they look! The chocolate cake donut was moist and chocolatey, the rainbow sprinkles were thick enough that my grand daughter was in heaven and the apple filling in a bear claw was apparently really yummy because my daughter was trying to talk her husband out of it after she got a taste. I will only leave my house at 6 am with my hair sticking up for one thing.. a good donut. City donuts did not disappoint. If I wouldn't go into a sugar coma I'd eat two more. The donuts are perfectly textured, soft and fluffy. The glaze is even and does not overwhelm you. I tried the glazed and chocolate glazed. I prefer the glazed..but I ate both. Suggestions for improving your Monday morning: head to City Donuts, buy a half dozen of the baker's choice, eat AT LEAST two donuts before starting your work day. I did the very thing this past Monday and I'm happy to report that it was a most fabulous start to my week. City Donuts has two locations--their OG shop in Aurora and their newer Denver spot on Colfax. I can only speak about their location on the 'fax, and I think it's just so cute. This adorable little shop is red and yellow inside with fun donut designs and the tables are painted with fake sprinkles. It sort of feels like you've walked into a time warp back to childhood, and I'm into it. As I mentioned, I let the gal working at the shop pick five awesome donuts for me (she rocked it). Their boxes are fun and say "you deserve at donut"--I'll definitely be using these as a gift or fun addition to a meeting ASAP. I might add that prices are great here--in a world of fancy pants artisanal donuts, I was so happy to see donuts with a reasonable (read: about $1 each) price tag. I was lucky enough to meet the owner, Sam, who is just a gem. He worked at Winchell's for 12 years before opening his own shop and definitely knows his stuff. Never have I had such incredible service. The doughnuts were amazing, soft and fluffy, but the employee who helped me truly stole the show.

This place is really good. They have little parking/street parking but you can usually find something on a side street. I really appreciate their friendly staff and large selection of donuts. The donuts always taste fresh. I like to take my kids here and pick up a couple donuts and head to the nearby park for some playground time. My kids like the chocolate covered sprinkled, cherry glazed and my favorite is their maple glazed with chopped peanuts. I have yet to try the bear claw or fritters but will do so someday when I'm feeling extra hungry and gluttonous. My only complaint (and this is just being picky/donut snobby) is that I would like to see more seasonal flavors - i.e. Pumpkin and apple cider in the Fall. read more

I have lived just down the road from City Donuts for 2 months and finally caved in to the sweet siren call of their sugary dough. I came in around 11 and there was still a wide selection of donuts, considering they're a very small shop & only open from 6-1. I have to say, I was disappointed in my donuts. I bought a Bavarian-cream long-john & an apple fritter. The long-john looked better than the fritter, but the fritter actually tasted better. The long-john was quite greasy-tasting and the filling was rather bland. The fritter was tasty, but very small and flat compared to any other apple fritter I've had. However, the price was great compared to a lot of other shops in the area. Because I REALLY love donuts, I will probably come back to try them again, but definitely a different variety than what I had today. read more

all I can say is they were open and had donuts for sale. this is not a clean place. I'm not sure if the donuts are baked here but I sure hope not. The clerk acted annoyed to even have a customer at all. While a donut shop is certainly an improvement over the tattoo parlors and weed shops common to this neck of Colfax, I was hoping for something a bit more noteworthy. Wander into this doughnut hole in the wall on Colfax and you'll be dazzled by the glorious well-stocked glazes and and frosty treats that greet you. The doughnuts are great, have a cup of drip coffee to wash it down, but even more special are the genuinely friendly owners who will make you feel truly welcome. I had the apple fritter, which was just the right amount of crisp on the outside, moist and fluffy on the inside, and a chocolate cake doughnut, which paired perfectly with coffee. Love this place. They sell cake and yeast donuts. I've had a jelly donut dusted with sugar, a glazed donut with maple icing, and a plain cake donut. All delicious and fresh. They are very reasonably priced - $10 a dozen. Other notes -- The service is great. They are nice to children. The coffee is not bad. It is nice inside - you can sit at a bar at the window and watch Colfax wake up. So glad City Donuts is open here! read more

Beware!... Recently went to 4918 E. Colfax store on a Saturday and ordered a glazed donut and a maple bar to go. Opened bag at home to find there was no donut only the bar. Called clerk I had just made purchase from. He remembered me saying I had ordered only the bar - not the donut. WRONG! He said the $2.69 I paid did not include any donut - which compounds the deceit. $2.69 for one basic bakery item that costs pennies to make?!?! A total rip off!.. So, my partner is a donut aficionado. We have gone to several spots in Denver and on South Broadway hoping to find a good go-to where we could get a snack in a pinch, but had been generally disappointed in most places. We'd seen reviews and photos from City Donuts and thought it looked so promising but our schedules rarely allowed us to get there during the shop's open hours. However, one fateful Tuesday morning, we found ourselves down at that part of town and walked in and were so excited! We got an apple fritter and some old fashioned donuts, as well as some classic chocolate glazed treats. The worker (Ahmed, I think his name was?) was so kind. He asked us what we were looking for, told us about the history of the small shop, and gave us a handful of donut holes for free. It was really pleasant chatting with him and seeing someone with such passion for the food was so refreshing. And then when we got home - WOW! We were so impressed by the quality of the donuts. My partner's in constant search of the perfect apple fritter and he said the one at City Donuts is the best one he's had while in Denver. The old fashioned donuts had the perfect texture and the chocolate donuts were really excellent. We can't wait to go again!!! read more

Howdy. It was the middle of the day, I was craving a donut, so I thought I'd stop by and give this new donut shop a try. I've driven by several times, but I'm not sure they were even open. Today I circled the block to find a spot, hopped out and ventured in. It had the feel of an old mom and pop operation. I was greeted with a "Howdy" by the woman behind the counter. The display case was brightly lit. It was about 1/3rd full, so the selection was not huge. They had one of the two donut types I typically order and gauge a shop on. It was a Rainbow Sprinkled cake donut. No Bavarian Cream filled donuts today, so I opted to judge the classic Glazed Raised donut. They were both both very good, but I was most impressed by the glazed one. It was soft and chewy, but not caked in glaze like a Krispy... you know. I'll be back to see what the Bavarian cream tastes like! I went back and had another look. This time they had long johns with Bavarian cream! The cream is so smooth, creamy and evenly distributed . The donut was just as moist and chewy as the one before. I'm not sure what type of oil they use to cook their donuts in, but it doesn't cause the phlegm reaction I've experience with other places. I took in the the decor this time around, clean and brightly colored with nice little tables and chairs. I took a coworker and he had a bear claw. He raved about how good the apple filling was and how he hadn't had one like it since he was a kid. This is my new donut spot! read more

I like the donuts here-- particularly the plain glazed, crumbly glazed, and BEAR CLAW (they sell out on Sat). The owner told me they do all the baking at the 1st store in Aurora and then drive them over to this 2nd store. I grew up in the land of independent neighborhood donut shops and have missed this 'scene,' which has been sorely lacking in Denver for too many years (Dutch Boy donuts on Colfax must have closed like 12 yrs ago?! Then there was Chuck's in Wash Park.....) The donuts here are placed in a cute bag or box that says "You Deserve a Donut" so it makes a nice gift to coworkers/teammates/students/anybody. I don't like standing in unpredictable lines with tourists to buy a donut and I don't like hot dog buns with thick icing passed off as glazed donuts. Glad I gave this place another try, used to be called Donut Hut but now its City Donuts, under new ownership and much more fresh, and way better. Really good not too many "creative" donuts yet, just good old fashion donuts which I like. Owner is a really nice guy, free wifi too so great place for people who need to get some work done. read more
