Prompt service. I reached out to City Dwellers as a first time customer. Within 2 hours, I received an email from David. We set up a time the next morning for an estimate. A home inspector had questioned the strapping of water heater, and functionality of bathroom exhaust fan. David checked out the strapping of water heater and deemed it to be sufficient. David then addressed the bathroom fan. David said the fan was operating adequately. He was at the residence about half an hour. The residence was in the adjoining city of his office. The reason I mentioned the distance was because even if had been located next door, most companies would have charged traveling time. David did "not" charge a penny for the call. I contacted David 2 months ago and he left me such a wonderful, sweet voicemail saying that if I could wait, he would be more than happy to do my task list. I decided that since he had so many great reviews on YELP and that it is difficult to get a handyman during COVID that it would be worth the wait, especially since he was a general contractor and I assumed with workers comp and general liability insurance. I sent him an email with a project list so he could look it over to make sure he could provide service and he assured me that I was scheduled. At the end of November, I contacted him and he told me that he could start whenever I wanted. His exact words, not mine. I was elated! Finally!! David came out to discuss the project and things were copacetic, although I found out that he does not do any painting. But no problem, he said, "I have someone I work with and you can decide if he has the skillset that you need." He called me later on that day to say his friend James wanted to stop by to take a look. I was ecstatic. James and I talked but it seemed as if he took no interest, that it was too much work for him, even though it was about a two-day job. Later on in the day I received a text message that he was not interested since he was a special ed teacher and did not have the time. Obviously, not a pro, so I was not interested either. But no problem, I could find someone else to do the painting tasks on my list. Even though this fell through, David seemed like he was very happy as we discuss his approach to doing tasks on the list that were not paint related and how he felt he could accomplish them successfully. After he left my house and later on that day, I got an email from David saying that he would not be able to accommodate me. That he could not take on any new clients. What? I was so shocked. What did I do? I waited 2 months and this is the way he treats me? And why would he wait until he had gone before telling me he was not taking any new clients? Even though his card says, no job too small, I think that because he was not going to get his friend to do the painting, he didn't want to waste his time with me. I got back to him and told him that he owed me at the very least an explanation as to why he could not do the work. He never did really say what went wrong, but keep saying things like, "you are out of my comfort zone, you are a beautiful person and you have a beautiful house, please be well." My advice is that if you are looking for a reliable person who keeps their promises you might want to reconsider using David. I neither did or said anything to him that would cause this response. We were on very friendly terms when he left my house. My gut feeling is that he is too big for his britches and can pick and choose what he wants to work on, even if it means he has promised otherwise. If indeed he meant that I should wait 2 months for him to see if he was interested in doing the work, he should have made that very clear. Who waits for a handyman for 2 months and expects that they are only stopping by to look at the job? He has cost me significant time on projects that are time sensitive and I am so disappointed. Just remember, he could do this to you too. My list was a basic handyman stuff, nothing too complex or dangerous and not such a small list that he would not want to take it on. I put so much faith in him and he treated me terribly. Best of luck to all of you and I hope this helps you with your search for a handyman. I think David made a horrible mistake and I hope he learns from it and treats people better. But I wouldn't count on it! read more

I was just so lucky to find David. I had called and reached out to others and they either a) didn't respond b) didn't cover my area or c) couldn't do everything I needed. David was responsive from the beginning and we made an appointment to review the work I needed done (replacement of floor boards in bathroom, replacement of toilet, removal of shower door and replacement of outside shed doors plus a few other odds and ends). Nothing was an issue --some of the work was challenging and David had answer or creative fix for everything. He really listens, is budget conscious and ladies if you are head of household like me, he is not an iota condescending. I am very pleased with the remodeling that David did on my Condominium in San Francisco. It was a full remodel of ~718sqft Condo completely redoing Kitchen, Bathroom and reconfiguring the bedroom/closet space. Electrical and plumbing was also updated and fully brought up to code by subcontractors that David brought onto the job. Separately hired contractors installed new hardwood flooring, cut kitchen counter granite and painted throughout. Work done in different areas: Kitchen: Complete remodel including install of new cabinets+drawers+doors, new appliances(Fridge,Dishwasher,Oven,Microwave,Sink), under cabinet LED lighting, new light fixtures, updated electrical outlets/switches and addition of GFCI and backsplash tiling and grouting. Bathroom: Complete remodel including install of new tile floor(leveled), new bathtub+shower door, porcelain walls, grouting and caulking, vanity, toilet, fan, new light fixtures and shelves Bedroom: Taking out an old closet sliding door, adding a wall midway to create a smaller closet with bi-fold door, adding recessed ceiling lights over the bed area General: Hanging of some floating shelves in living room, did Baseboards throughout, moving circuit breaker location to meet code, patched and primed walls where things were opened up and added new doors for bathroom and bedroom. David also worked with the plumber to separate the plumbing from the mains of the building so we could turn off water as needed without affecting the rest of the building which had daily charges for keeping water off. He was very professional, respectful, and friendly, He showed good patience dealing with the HOA and inspectors and all the strict rules that my HOA had about remodeling including noise, working hours, elevator usage, covering of floors in the building, etc. He was dedicated to completing the job to my satisfaction from start until finish. David understood that I had intentions to complete the work as quickly as possible so I could move in ASAP and he was fully committed to my job to that end. Despite the time pressure the quality of the work done was top-notch and where decisions with trade-offs needed to be made he openly asked questions about how I wanted things done to ensure it was to my liking. During the course of the remodeling I had his full attention, even though I was usually at work during the days, I was always able to reach him readily via cell phone even at night or weekends and I never had to worry about him spending time on other job sites while he was assigned to my project. He has a great eye for detail, and caught issues that my separately hired Painting and Hardwood Flooring contractors had missed. While he is not a designer by trade, he also showed a good sense of style and was able to suggest a few things to improve the look of the place, in particular the suggestion to add recessed lighting over my bed area was a great idea and I am very happy he suggested it. He also had some good ideas to hide imperfections that were result of the building itself or other separately hired contractors had created such as non-levelness of the hardwood floors. David is very honest and genuine in mentioning his areas of concern for project. Some might think he provides too much information about the challenges involved in the project, but I am a perfectionist and an engineer myself so I liked to hear that level of detail and what trade-offs were with different options. In general I found it best to meet with David in person to discuss details as there were a few times where we had some miscommunications over the phone about imperfections where things were work in progress and I hadn't realized the work wasn't yet complete. The crew David had for electrical and plumbing did an excellent job but the folks he had hired for some of the general work were not the most-experienced but he recognized that and addressed it by the 2nd half of the overall project. Where there were challenges he brought in appropriate sub-contracted help as needed such as in the case of my bathroom shower. Based on discussions with my interior designer, the shower was done with large sheets of porcelain(30"x60") which can be challenging to work with. He found the right experts to do the job in that case so it was done right as he wasn't familiar with working with such large sheets of thin material. Though it took a bit longer than I would have liked to complete the job, I am very happy with the end results. read more

This revue is 4 months late & I apologize. Of course I have a horror story-my water heater burst and flooded my very small town house way back in April 2015 (7 months ago). I had been waiting for the insurance/mortgage company to figure it all out when I finally found a handyman whose business is -"The City Dweller". However, at the point I met David (owner of The City Dweller) ), I unfortunately had already met with a duo calling themselves "handymen" (further "capable"-NOT!). (FYI: I had made more than one appointment because it was my experience that sometimes people don't show up). Proof that when you're dealing with a home remodel, you should not let your conscience or sense of "Fairplay", guide you in choosing the right handy person. I'm ashamed to say that because I had met with this Deuel right before Dave I felt obligated to give them the job. Needless to say, I was scammed for basically all the money the insurance "gave me" and I'm now still living in a house (7 months later) with no hot water, shower, kitchen, etc. In terms of my rating of Dave and The City Dweller-no I cannot speak to his actual services...but I sure wish I could. But I can speak to his demeanor and his professionalism-all of which were lacking in the people calling themselves legit-it was very common for me to make numerous phone calls and then to deal w/no show appointments or people not wanting to make a commitment regarding money. Dave on the other hand is the complete opposite of these people. I distinctly remember Dave being extremely professional, on time (he was at my house before me for our appt), completely willing to put everything we had discussed in a contract, including money specifics-and he returned phone calls. Further, when I let him know that I couldn't use him, he still gave me additional resources I could use. Now that's a class act and a man with character. I guess I should expect nothing less from a fellow "Pacifican"- that fact combined with the above, should have led me to choosing Dave. I only hope that my truth & honest opinion, helps guide you in choosing whom I wish I did. Good Luck! And Dave-you should be proud, unfortunately you are the exception to the rule of finding honest, hard working people who aren't out to take advantage of you. David is a star!! I had a fence blow down but some of it was propped up with a bush and dangerous to my doggie. I called David and he found time to come over within an hour, and cut the fence apart, so we could move it. We then quickly put up some wire fencing to keep the dog out of the neighbors yard.
