We just bought some cedar for a fence we are building. They ordered exactly what we needed and called us as soon as it got in. I was impressed because usually we have to do the calling to find out if our product has come in. And two people helped bring it out to the truck! They were so friendly and nice and personable. I recently purchased cedar fencing from this business. I spent over $700 here and I can't remember ever experiencing such rudeness from a business before. I was told the wood I was purchasing was quality wood. That the knots wouldn't be larger than 1 1/2 inches and no knot holes. Probably 30% of the wood had large knots, knot holes, and a lot of split and damaged pieces. We managed to cut around and make all of the boards work except 2 boards. When I went to return the two boards and get a few extra I was "helped" by the rudest person I've probably ever had to deal with. From the moment I walked up to the counter he acted like I was disturbing him. He came out to the pile of boards, pointed at the ones I needed to choose from and then as he walked away said "try not to make a mess!" I have made many purchases from city lumber since I bought my home 10 years ago. I believe I have spent enough here to not be treated like a child. I don't know how this business keeps customers if this is how they treat everyone. I will drive to Portland to buy lumber before I will give this place my business again. City Lumber normally stocks higher quality lumber than the big box store and their employees are usually more informed than the big box store employees but it is hit and miss on service supplied by these employees. On another note the website needs to be improved. When searching for specific products it will list all kinds of other products as well. Good sales strategy but irritating when trying to find one product and yes, I did try multiple times to narrow my search criteria. read more

These people are so good they know you by name after only a couple times. Their prices are fair and their selection is perfect for a smaller, much more attentive outfit. I keep coming back to gift these awesome battery powered hurricane lantern auxiliaries. Unassuming, friendly, and awesome is worth even a couple extra pennies. I've spent hundreds of dollars in the store and like another reviewer said the sales staff is hit or miss sometimes their very helpful or super rude....like why are you in here are you from Astoria what's happening like please you run a business, customer service comes with that if you can't be nice to customers then we'll go to the big box store like Home Depot. read more

I'm sorry to say after shopping here for over a year now for some seriously intense remodeling, City Lumber has proven to be totally hit and miss. Some of the staff are AWESOME - willing to help, show you where stuff is, help you with your project, etc. But others make you wish you'd gone to Home Depot, which is scary. Why? The staff on the lumber side of the store. Out of the multiple times we've gone there, they treat us differently each time. Some are happy to cut the lumber into 8' lengths we can stick in the back of our vehicle, at other times they downright refuse and we are left with nothing. We call to see if something is in stock and they say it "might" be, or "might" be coming in on Friday, or sometimes someone will actually physically check to confirm so we don't waste a 30 minute drive into town. When my husband was in yesterday, he needed more 8' lengths of wood, about $350 worth. They refused to cut their existing 20' any less than 10' - which would not fit in our vehicle - because they would end up with lengths they said they could not sell. Ironically they could have cut 8' lengths from each and left with 12' for their inventory but god forbid they lift a finger to do that...they would rather have US be stuck with wood we don't want/need than make the customer happy (not to mention be consistent with the fact that the last time we were there they were happy to help us - even asked us what lengths WE wanted). With that, we had ~$500 worth of items we were going to purchase (this is after literally having spent $2500+ with them two weeks ago) but because they refused to sell us these as they had in the past, my husband canceled the entire transaction and walked out. They charge premium prices in their lumber yard but provide sub-par service that clearly tailors to those with big trucks and massive wallets. We won't be shopping there in the future. read more

City Lumber was a truly wonderful surprise to stumble across in Astoria. They are a full-service lumber and hardware store with friendly and helpful staff and they had everything I needed and more. They have a homey "Mom and Pop" feel and they showed me immediately where everything I needed was located. Went in because the holes that you would screw into the door hinge were too big. Asked about repair kits or larger screws. Instead of selling me something I was given a piece of dunnage or batten and told to whittle down and hammer into the over size holes and use screws I already had. Had my doubts but it worked great and fixed under 10 minutes. Awesome thank you! Exactly why I prefer city lumber to big box store! read more

I thought I would share a recent experience at City Lumber. My house front steps really took a beating over the winter and needed something to freshen them up. I wasn't quite sure what to do. Structurally they were fine but they just looked dingy. The clerk at City Lumber listened to what I had to say and when I suggested painting them he was very helpful in pointing out all the options. He was obviously a local person who knew exactly what would work and what would not. I decided on a Cabot stain which he mixed to the color I wanted and then he told me if it needed to be adjusted further after a first coat I was welcome to bring it back in and he would add more intense color. I'm not going to bad-mouth anyone else here but the reason I go to City Lumber for things that really matter when it comes to my house is that those guys know the products they carry right down to exactly how they would work in different situations.
