This is a clean and appealing little taco joint at the south end of The Lumberyard. Pleasant seating outside. Service was quick and efficient. Understandably, this is a popular place so there is usually a line, but it moves quickly. All of the tacos we ordered were creative and full of flavor. I got the Cochinita Pibil and the Pesado taco. The only reason I set them down was to grab a napkin (or 6)! My husband got this month's featured taco, the "Holy Moly" and the Carne Asada. He finished them both in record time. A lot of people tend to go to the Taco Stand a few blocks away, but I like City Tacos better. Firstly, the food tasted better. Secondly, City Tacos is a better locations for ease of parking and it's closer to the beach. The line can get long at City Tacos too but I have always found the food to come out efficiently. The line can be slow though because the menu contains really great stuff it's hard to choose! Seating area is available outside but I think that a party of six or bigger will be harder to accommodate on their smallish patio. It's easier to get takeaway for a bunch of food and walk across the street to have a picnic on the beach or grass. The vegetarian option and vegan choices here are excellent. The veg option for protein ( Rajas con crema) is basically sautéed onions and bell peppers in a creamy sauce. One of my faves was a seasonal offering -- squash blossom tacos. Not many places in SD offer this type of taco so it was nice to eat something different. The mushroom tacos are tasty! Still looking forward to trying the cauliflower tacos, but like all other restaurants during the pandemic, City Tacos May be missing some menu items due to supply issues. The Tlacoyo is hard to pronounce but well worth a try. It is super filling because of the blue corn masa. All the tacos are good, but my fave is the Camaron Enchilada. The portion size is average and still fits the price. The sauce is goes well with the fresh cilantro that the taco is topped with. read more

I was really excited to try City Tacos after we walked by for years and then my husband went with his friend a few times without me and raved about it. We decided to go for lunch today on Taco Tuesday. Their website shows they offer 10% off. The other bonus is that if you order online, you can receive either free churros or a free order of guacamole if you spend at least $20, which would not have been a problem for 3 of us. We decided to read the menu outside and then order online. When we tried to go back and edit the order, the website was very frustrating and it was taking too long. I went inside to the counter to explain and kindly ask if they would honor the free item by taking my order inside. The woman at the register proceeded to tell me the website was not working, so maybe if I had actually tried to submit my order it wouldn't have gone through anyway. While I respect that technical difficulties happen, you should be ready to honor an offer like that ESPECIALLY if you know your website is down. I thought she agreed to help me, so I ordered all of our food and when I got to the end and asked for two orders of churros, one of which I would pay for, she said no to the free ones. Here's the thing - it's not about the money. My husband and I work hard to be able to go out and enjoy meals sometimes. The problem is that when you offer a deal and your system is down, you take care of the guest. You don't use some bullshit line about it being for online orders only and saying there is nothing you can do while claiming to be the manager. That is the lazy and easy way out. If you own a business, especially a restaurant you better have great food and great service. There are a million choices of where to eat in San Diego and it's suburbs and you better believe we and many other people will go elsewhere to spend their hard earned money even if the food was good before. I believe in it being a teaching and learning opportunity for this person who had no idea how to provide quality customer service. With that being said, the owner needs to start paying attention to their reviews because there's more than one about this young lady. He can teach her and if she doesn't step it up, he would be wise to either get in there and do it himself or find someone with more respect and pride. Wonderful taco shop! The tacos were really delicious and all the ingredient combinations were well thought out. We had the surf and turf, shrimp, and fish tacos and each one tasted amazing yet distinct. They also had a great selection of about 10 solid craft beer options. The staff was very cool, helping us to find extra chairs. Also despite being at the beach, there is a big parking lot nearby. I went to City Tacos yesterday and was able to DINE IN. Make sure to wear your face mask when ordering or walking around the restaurant! This was my first time at any City Tacos, so I ordered the Mexicali, Pescado, and Camaron Enchilado Tacos. I also redeemed my check-in offer and got a free corn quesadilla! The Mexicali was delightful! The fresh flour tortilla, potato, beef, and guacamole were a beautiful combo that made the taco my favorite from the ones I ordered. The Pescado taco was refreshing, crispy, and had great flavor. I like putting the pineapple salsa on the Pescado taco to add more of a sweet balance to the taco. The camaron enchilado was good. I definitely think pan fried shrimp would go better for the flavor profile, but it was tasty nonetheless. The corn quesadilla was fresh and the tortilla was handmade. I definitely enjoyed my experience at City Tacos and look forward to coming back to try the various selection of tacos! read more

My wife and I were looking for a place to get takeout on a recent Friday night that we could take to the beach to eat. We'd been wanting to try City Tacos in Encinitas for some time, and we're so glad we finally did. Here is what we liked: - Amazing food...we absolutely couldn't believe how good the tacos were. I got the Chile Relleno taco and the Borrego taco...the CR one, in particular, was incredible. The Borrego (lamb) one was ok, but got quite as good. My wife got the Portobello taco, which she really liked (and I enjoyed finishing). But, we also got the Cocito Californio cheese crusted spinach wrap (with poblano peppers and onions)...and, that was out of this world. So good! - They have lots of outdoor seating, which we'll enjoy during some future visit. But, for our takeout order, everything was nicely packaged up in a to-go box, including several types of salsas. Bottom line: What took us so long to try City Tacos? Fist time here and they were open for dine in. It's a little tight inside for social distancing but it works. They were busy and seemed overwhelmed as far as ordering is concerned. But the food came out fairly fast. We ordered 4 different tacos. I liked the pollo city because of the almonds. My husband like his pollo Asado but said the sauce in the Camaron enchilado was too much and too spicy. The only thing missing was the chips which they said they weren't serving because of Covid. Sucks that I have to give this place such a low score bc it was my first time here and the tacos were pretty good, but the service was horrible! We ordered some more tacos after our initial order but we never received them. We waited for them for about half an hour. When we went back inside to check on our order they completely forgot to put it in their system and tried to blame us for not getting a number. I just assumed they would put the new order with our initial one so I didn't think we needed a new number. At that point we just wanted to get out of there since we had been waiting so long, but it was such a fight to get a refund. They said bc we didn't have a number they couldn't confirm we paid for them. Our card got charged, so we showed them the charge for the tacos and eventually they relented. I've only been here for the Taco Tuesday, but I have to say that in a town with a highly competitive Mexican food/taco market, City Tacos definitely holds their own. They specialize in more of Tacos a la carte, at least on Taco Tuesday. The carnitas, chicken and asada tacos were all top notch. The service was fast, the Pacifico's were ice cold, it was a great change from some of the other taco places on the 101 that don't serve Pacifico/Modelo - which are as important to tacos as salsa is! If you're wondering how many tacos to get, I'm a 205 lb man, 3 tacos plus a few pacificos was perfect. 4 had me feeling pretty full... First two trips were excellent, third was exceptionally poor. Two issues. - water cooler was empty, the cashier removed the empty 5 gallon jug and placed the hose which goes into the jug on the dirty floor inside the cabinet, I figured he would clean it before placing it in the new jug but he didn't! Unacceptable to say the least. - Tortilla shells were cold and dry not soft and warm as the first two visits. I was extremely impressed with the first two visits and drove out of my way to take a friend for a great taco....swung on and missed by a long shot this time. Fix that water issue or I will never be back! Probably won't go again regardless. Oh yes, I ended up with stomach cramps and diarrhea the next morning, most likely from eating here, didn't eat out anywhere else that day. They're open---and you can sit outside! Customer service here gets 5 stars as they're always so nice and helpful there. I've been here three times now since I got back into town, and I really like their: - Tlacoyo with chicken, which is a torpedo-shaped "panini" of sort that's stuffed with mashed potatoes & coated with masa---delicious! It's a little spicy as well, so I get a side of guacamole. Must be eaten while it's still hot though to get the full deliciousness. - Camaron taco, which is a fried shrimp taco with squash, corn, cilantro, & a delicious sauce. It's flavorful and having the squash in there gets some of your veggies in. I'm definitely going back to get this again! - Hibiscus tea, which is flavorful & not too sweet. There are some other cool new things in their "Something Different" menu the menu that I look forward to trying soon! There's plenty of parking in the lot, and there's a table with a cool firepit, and even a foosball table! Definitely give this place to try!
