Cranberry orange scone was fine. Coconut chocolate dipped bar was nice and fresh, soft and sweet. I was given a cherry bar by accident and I didn't try it because I have a disdain for such things. My ginger green tea was great and the nice barista even made sure the added plant milk wasn't too sweet for me by checking the label which was very kind of him. The coffee is solid. It's fresh crisp and quick. They have a variety of different drinks and snacks you can choose from but I come here for the black coffee. There is a little bit of inside seating and a few seats out side. It's right next to a park so if the weather is nice it's a great place for a coffee and stroll it low key hang out. Service is friendly and fast. There is street parking outside and other cute shops to walk around. read more

Pros: perfect spot for a quick breakfast or lunch. The spinach croissant is sooooo good! I also tried the banana nut coffee, and I was pleasantly surprised, not a coffee flavor I would usually go for, but I was on vacation so it was the perfect time to try something new. I also had the pumpkin roll and it was delicious with the coffee. Cons: Limited seats, best to pick up the goods and take them to the park across the street (on a good day). read more

Civilization is a nice little café, it has a great patio to sit outdoors during nice days. However, if you could use a little bit of work. I came around brunch time, and I grabbed a bacon, egg and cheese croissant from the refrigerated area. I asked for it to be warmed up, but when I received it, the center was still cold. I also got a chocolate chip muffin, which was pretty dry. I will give the croissant another try, but, I don't think I would order the muffin again. On the positive side, the staff is friendly and helpful, and if I were in the area, I wouldn't mind sitting on the patio for a while to relax. I will have to revisit in the future to see if this was a one-off experience, but at this point, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come to Civilization. read more

This place is so cozy and cute! You can immediately tell this place is a neighborhood favorite, with all the locals just hanging around, chatting with each other, yelling good morning to everyone that walks by. The lady working here was so friendly and sweet. We ordered a blueberry muffin, coffee cake, iced latte, and hot chocolate. Everything came out super quick and was all good! Lot of outlets and tables! And wifi worked perfectly. The lady knew everyone that came in, greeting everyone by name and knowing their order before they said anything. I have been to Civilization a couple times because it is in a very central location in Tremont and they offer basically any food/drink that you might need in a pinch between the hours of 7 or 7:30 am and 5 pm. Most recently, my friend and I were waiting for the Lincoln Park public pool to open and only had Apple Pay but desperately needed to sit in A/C for that hour with some snacks, and Civilization was right there welcoming us. I also have gone quickly in the morning for iced coffees when I have been desperately in need of one. I think the food/drink at Civilization is good but not great. Their prices are on the lower end (a croissant for $2 and a giant peanut butter cookie for $3!), but it's not anything special. They did have some more specialty baked goods that were at a higher price point (slices of cake for $7, vegan offerings) that I am thinking may be more interesting and worth returning for. The decor inside is definitely fun and quirky being that it is housed in a 19th century pharmacy building, and I think that most of the allure of Civilization comes from the ambiance. I saw some people doing work inside but I personally don't think it would be great for laptop work since there is very limited seating and it's quiet dark inside. There's quite a few tables outside as well, which I think look nice for sharing a coffee and pastry with friends. I'd definitely come back to Civilization for its convenience, but I think there are more interesting coffee spots in the Tremont area. read more

If you are a Starbucks person this review is not for you. As some of us love coffee and espresso that has rich taste and is not burnt flavoring. Civilization expresso has a rich smooth taste like you get in Europe. A lovely relaxed atmosphere with a tin ceiling and accents that makes me feel like I am back traveling there as well. Great place to read a book or get something done on the computer. Talk with friends about the important things in life while you have a bite of their sinfully decadent baked goods. This is one of favorite coffee places in the area! I have to say that I stick to the Cafe Mocha - it's my favorite after sampling a few drinks off of their menu. It's a cafe mocha made with Mexican chocolate. There's a bit of a spice and it's perfect. For someone who normally likes her drinks sweet, this drink isn't too sweet and yet somehow it's absolutely perfect that way. It's $3.50 for the smaller size and $4.50 for the larger size. They have a large selection of bakery and food options - from salads to sandwiches to wraps. I've had a few things from their bakery selection and everything has been good thoough sometimes a bit too rich. I've yet to try anything off of their food menu but it's on my list! The interior is wood paneled and cozy. The place is by no means large but it's also not small. They fit a surprising number of tables inside without making it feel too cluttered. One of the downsides of the size of this plac is that when they steam milk or grind coffee it's incredibly audible and loud because you're close to the bar. If you can ignore that as white noise, you're all set. The numerous times I've been here I can't say they've ever played music. Either that or it was incredibly low and I didn't pick it up. If that's the case then I'm impressed because I pick everything and have a hard time ignoring that sort of sound. I love doing work here or just sitting back and writing down my thoughts. I think one of the things I love most about this place, apart from the Cafe Mocha, is that it's what a coffee shop should be. I was here on a Saturday morning at 8 in the morning and there were several local men and women, of varying ages, drinking their coffee under the outdoor umbrellas and talking about their lives. It's a hub for locals to sit back and unwind. Even if you're there by yourself, whether you're inside or outside, you have ample opportunity to people watch. I was at Tremont to try high-end cuisine foods, and came across this coffee shop. Of course, I can't pass by good coffee smell, so I decided to go in and try it! First of all, the price of coffee here is very reasonable as you can see on the menu. I tried the chai latte and cafe chocolatti. I liked the taste both of them ! Welcome to the wild, wild west! The decor and woody (wood) setting inside is very interesting and makes you feel as if you're living in the wild west...haha. Love it. I would prefer it to be brighter inside because the inside is a bit dark. I can always sit outside if I want more sunlight next time. I was in the Tremont neighbourhood with a friend on a Sunday afternoon in May so I stopped in here as we both wanted to get some work done. Great service and friendly atmosphere. Adorable spot in a sweet neighborhood. Cool steampunk vibe in a historic building with kind folks behind the counter. We ordered a coffee, an herbal tea (chamomile), and some pastries. I came this morning with a friend and it was so lovely! It had plenty of seating with waves of people in and out. It reminded me of a very festive, decorative grandmother's home with Christmas trees everywhere with the warm smell of spices and coffee. I tried the apple croissant and it was really good as well! There are plenty of treats to choose from. The croissant was more doughy and less flaky, but was still great. I've been sick with an awful cold and they were nice enough to give me hot water with my cappuccino. What a great place! For starters, Tremont coffee shops already have my heart because the parking is so easy. It's so refreshing in the city of Cleveland to just pull up and have a street spot. Civilization reminds me of something out of Beauty in the Beast. The interior has a dark, wooden, rustic vibe to it. There are steampunk-ish lighting fixtures throughout, and the light is low. They have a mix of tables and chairs, including a cute patio, so there's no shortage of seating throughout. In the winter, this place will be my cozy winter coffee hot spot. Civilization has a great coffee selection, including teas. Big props to the staff, too. Especially because I accidentally spilled a glass of water everywhere while co-working with a friend and they were really nice, non-judgy, and helped me clean it up. No unfriendly hipster vibes here. For me, the best part of Civilization is the quality internet, especially compared to the glacial internet speeds that many coffee shops often have. OH, and the air conditioning. Again, it bewilders me that in this humidity, Civilization is one of the only coffee shops that puts the air on. Looking forward to making this a staple, especially in fall/winter. read more

I am baffled on how this business treats their customers. I went and there was a very kind gentleman helping me and he made me an iced mocha. He asked me to try it because he put a little chocolate in it. I tried it and it was definitely not the taste I was looking for, and he kindly asked me if I would like something else. next thing you know an older lady comes flying around the corner asking me what I wanted extremely rude and disrespectful. she then told me this place is not for taste testing and I would have to pay for a second beverage since she will have to throw out the one I got. I told her why, I was I was offered and an alternative ? she made the second beverage I then offered to pay the gentlemen for the second beverage, he said that's ok . as a food service worker, i told her she was extremely rude and she needs to learn how to treat her customers. Civilization is a nice, quiet, and friendly coffee shop where you can grab a bit of food and get some reasonable coffee. The service is friendly and the few times I've been there, it has always been moderately busy with a few open tables. There is a reasonable selection of coffee accompaniments, but I must admit, I've never gotten any. The only reason I find it hard to rate this place better is the coffees I've had here is nice, but with the crazy number of coffee shops these days, I feel to justify an above average rating there needs to be something truly unique about the place. Without latte art, special flavors, and coffee that was good, but not incredible, I find Civilization to be a place that is a good place to meet friends local to the area or if you need a place to hole up for a bit. Bottom line, it's a decent coffee shop when you want to stay local and get some work done. However, for a special coffee treat, I'd recommend one of the others in Cleveland that might be slightly pricier and probably more crowded. read more

I like the coffee. But with the new owners I get the glare when I bring in my own coffee cup to get the 1.00 coffee. She glares at me then my cup. Today they filled my cup up to high even though I asked them to leave room for cream. I needed to pour out a small amount. The owner saw me and said something then shook her head. Went here this past weekend with the wife for a simple cheap coffee date and was not disappointed! Firstly, I have to say I simply love parking over in this area. It's no stress, you just park on the street - no meters! Try pulling that for a place in Cleveland Heights, you'll be sorely disappointed. Now onto the shop itself! It's cozy inside - the furniture is mostly wooden tables with a mix of wooden chairs and comfy couches. It's dim, but not dark. There is also air conditioning! It startled me at first because it seems to come from the base boards by your feet and I wasn't expecting that. My wife and I got a raspberry croissant, an apple croissant, a premade sandwich (it was almost noon, so no surprise that they were out of the breakfast sandwich I wanted, so we made do) and a white hot chocolate. The croissant's were amazing! The filling didn't overflow but they didn't skimp on it either. It was the perfect ratio. They were huge puff pastry's and my only complaint is I'm not sure they are technically croissants. Pedantic naming conventions aside, I haven't stopped dreaming about them! The sandwich (turkey) was also very good. The white hot chocolate was delicious, but VERY sweet (I say this as someone with a huge sweet tooth who likes all warm beverages to be sweet). I would recommend sipping slowly or getting the smallest size if you aren't in the mood for a ton of sugar. All in all we can't wait to be back for another coffee date! The place is charming with a old time coffee shop feel. I personally felt very cramped with tables all on one side due to a counter top that stretches the whole right side of the shop. Initially impressed by large selection of muffins, pastrys and sandwiches. I got my go to blueberry muffin and unfortunately it was extremely dry. Like can't even eat the whole thing dry.
