The owner, Fred (Alfred) is a friendly swiss man who must be in his 80's. He has a thick swiss accent, but that only makes sense considering the name of the store! During my discussion with Fred, I found out that he started working with meat in the mid 60's. He started the Matterhorn Meat Shop in 1975 and has been doing it ever since. He told me that he got into the business because he enjoyed doing it, not because of the money! I was excited to try a get a feel for the quality here, so I decided to trying a little bit of several items: Jerky ($16/95/lb): Very good. He keeps it frozen, but it's been great once it's thawed. It's a bit on the thicker side, but I'd get some again. Jerky is always expensive, but this seemed pretty reasonable. Gothaer Zervelat - It's basically a german salami. It's an oblong shape and has a pretty good smoke flavor to it. If you're into salami, try some of this! Knockwurst - I haven't tried it yet, but I'm told that its the swiss version of a hot dog. It looks similar to a brat. Spicy Sausage - A bit milder than I would like, but delicious! Mild Sausage - Delightful! A fairly standard sausage, but worth trying. Landjaeger - Its quite a bit different that the other ones that I've had. Based on my experience here, I can't imagine that this is anything but 100% authentic. They are pretty big, but the flavor is mild and worth trying. Bring cash - I'm not sure if he accepts credit cards or not. I think that his register is the same one that he had in 1975, which is awesome! My only regret is that I didn't discover the Matterhorn Meat Shop earlier. This is undoubtedly on it's way to becoming one of my favorite shops around!

My family doesn't just shop for dinner here, we pack our freezers! My mom will order several pounds the smoked German sausage when she's in town and fly them back home to Texas. Are they the best in the world? Probably not, but being a classic dinner here and there throughout my 40 years on this earth and having grown up in the Yakima Valley makes them the best in my world. We were so glad after getting some of their wonderful pepperoni and other fine meats . This is a great little mom and paw type of store. We actually met the grandson. Who was there late on a Saturday and let us in to get our selections. The first thing to know is that this place is a little off the beaten path. It's pretty deep into West Valley and about a mile off the main road coming down into the area. It's marked relatively well, but definitely one to stick into Google maps before you head out. We had a couple lambs prepared here and they did it in a timely fashion and for a good price. While here, I got to explore the small room out front where they have a refrigerator with pepperoni sticks, summer sausage and beef jerky. The pepperoni sticks - affectionately known as the pepper stix - were really good. The packs range from about five dollars to $10 and are great for snacking. The summertime is apparently a slow time for butchering meet, but into the fall and winter they have many different options for your meat purchasing pleasure. They smoked turkeys for Thanksgiving, periodically FB for sale and reportedly have lots of pork options later in the year. The guy who runs the place is very nice and takes pride in what he does. It's definitely not a glamorous job, but keeping the people said with delicious meat options rarely is! Worth your time to call these guys up and see what they have available. The amount and love and care they pour into their animals and the pride they take in providing the best grass for the cows to feed on is unparalleled to anything else. We have always received such high quality meat and over the years. Even some of our friends who have tried our beef have decided to buy from them as well. We are so happy with their beef that once a year we make the drive from Colorado to the farm to pick up our meat. It is well worth the trip knowing the quality and care put into the beef. The bonus is that we have developed such a wonderful friendship with the people who raise our food. What a blessing that is! With all that's going on in this crazy world we live in and what seems like the constant attack on pure, God given, clean, healthy food it is so wonderful to have found Holy Cow where we know we are getting the best food money can buy.
