We had a wonderful experience adopting, a dog, and all the information that they provided ! they do a lot of work before they release a dog / pet They met us with our other dogs so we could walk in the back to meet the new dog . they have the best set up And the dr. Robertson the veterinarian who takes care of the animals like give some shot, worming, spay, and neutering and whatever else they may need The staff was very helped even though they were short staffed due to budget layoff and you could tell the staff that was left was well over work and hard to get a hold of the county should add back the staff they took away that's what's making it hard for the public to get a hold of them . I recommend adopting pets from them just be patient waiting for a phone call back or waiting for them to pick up the phone. They have a lot to do. read more

They should rename this 'shelter' to Aushwitz for dogs. An investigation should take place to determine their competence. NEVER, I repeat NEVER, take a dog here. I wouldn't trust them with making cereal. Background: found a sweet pup on a trail, clearly had been abandoned. They not only accused us of all kinds of nonsense but then deemed him unfit for society. Not once for the day I sheltered him did he show a lick of aggression towards myself, friends or my dog. They euthanized him. Their 'behavioral analyst' should look hard in the mirror and cry themselves to sleep. Murderers. They wouldn't release him to me, or anyone else, not even a rescue. Each rescue that I had call was given a worse picture of his behavioral assessment. They lied to make him look worse each time. First time, he bit someone trying to clean his teeth and didn't break skin. The second rescue was told he was trying to bite people all day. The third rescue was told he bit his finders... which is me. They like killing dogs for fun and we're all letting them. read more

Yesterday, Gentleman Caller and I brought home a 95 pound dog. I'm saying this like it was a spur of the moment thing, but we have been looking for the right household addition for months. It sounds like it should be easy, right? Two people who want a dog go out and instantly fall in love with the same dog and just victory march on home--or not at all. We had been to so many shelters and met so many different dogs, it seemed like we would never find the dog that combined what we both wanted. How hard is it to find "reasonably lazy but can be inspired for energetic madness but overall gentle and kind"? Hundreds of dogs need homes and we were both committed to finding a dog at a shelter. After seeing so many shelters and sad dogs though, I was feeling pretty drained on the whole process. I told myself we would spend one more weekend looking, we'd go to this one more shelter whose website suggested 3 or 4 dogs who might be good fits for our home. I was wary of the whole "county animal shelter" thing. I guess I was expecting sad prison rows of dogs and dimly lit corridors. I actually found a well-lit and friendly facility. We walked up and down three rows of dogs (who were in nice, clean spaces and fed the dogs treats) and then went to a room with a bench, chairs and some toys to meet our potential new roomies. Aside from the general niceness of the facility, the staff there was really excellent. They seemed to know more about each individual animal than at other shelters I've been to. The staff seemed to really care about finding a good home for each animal and moreover, finding the right home for each animal. I can't guarantee that Gigantor (not his real name...or is it?) will be the greatest dog in the world. After 24 hours, he's still figuring us out. I can guarantee that he came from a good place where staff members could tell us about his history and his demeanor and that he has been well taken care of. read more

This is the county shelter for Clackamas County. It is very clean, and the dogs get nice sized runs. I have visited a few times, and each time there are staff members and volunteers wandering around in the shelter itself. Make some eye contact, and they're right there immediately to help you meet a dog. I have had experiences at other places where there are lines to wait in lines to talk to people before meeting a pet. That's not the case here. They deal primarily with stray animals, and they do euthanize animals when they have to, though they seem to work collaboratively with other area shelters, including no-kill shelters, to ensure that quality pets are transferred over if space runs low here. The hard reality is that we cannot always provide homes for all animals, and the even harder reality is that some animals should not be placed in homes where they can harm people or pets. I respect that hard decisions must be made, and I very much appreciate the hard work that goes into a county shelter like this one to give the quality dogs who come through here a fair shake at a new home. The shelter is exceptionally clean, and there are buckets of kibble on the doors to the runs so that people can interact positively with the dogs, see them sit, see them take food gently, see them do whatever cute thing they do to get you to give up the kibble, and maybe some space in your home for them. If you are looking for a dog, big or small, old or young, definitely swing down to Clackamas and check out this county animal shelter. read more

Since it is a SHELTER most of their dogs come in as strays with unknown history. Not many volunteers, not enough donations, this place does the best they can. We were interested in a senior pet, preferably one that had been overlooked and HAD to be good with children. We had a dog in mind and when I went to go meet him someone else had placed a hold in him. So I asked a staff member if there were any dogs that they knew of that was good with kids and they directed me to a scrawny rat-dog that was crazily screeching his head off when he saw me. I firmly said "this is it? Absolutely not. I do not want a chihuahua." But the woman replied "give him a chance" so I shrugged and politely agreed. Not eager to meet this tiny, four pound creature they set us up in a room where he hastily ran in circles and promptly jumped in my lap and fell asleep. The woman helping me became very excited, stating that she has never seen him do that to anyone, nor has she ever seen him fall asleep as quickly as he had in my lap. She said "he REALLY likes you. You have to consider him." Of course, i figured this was just their way of trying to get me to adopt their shelter-rat but the more I learned about him the more I realized what she was saying was true; he very much trusted me and chose me to be his mom. He was adopted and returned, had been there for a few months. I quickly learned that he may have been abused because of the way he acted in certain situations; he was untrusting of people, unsure of his surroundings. It took him time to warm up to people and he was aggressive to strangers. And since he was one of nine chihuahuas in the shelter he was quickly overlooked. Suddenly, while looking down on his tiny body, it became very obvious that he chose me and I needed to take him home. I returned with my husband and one week later he came home with me. We have had him for almost a year and he is everything I could have hoped for in a dog. He adjusted quickly. He learned tricks! He can happily be petted by strangers and picked up by them too. If not for the woman working that day I would have never given my little tremble-rat a chance. And now he's the furry love of my life! read more

I am confused about all of the negative reviews on here because I loved our experience of adopting our dog. We adopted our little pit on June 9th, and it was the best experience I've ever had adopting a dog. We had seen a dog on their website (which admittedly isn't very up to date) and went there to get him but he had already been adopted. So we walked around and found our little spotted sweetheart. They staff took time with us to sit and play with her and they answered all of our questions honestly and kindly. They warned us she would need some obedience training, and that it would take awhile for her to learn her new name, and they reminded us that they don't know anything about her past life since she was picked up as a stray. I appreciated their honesty before we jumped into the responsibility of owning a dog. Upon pick up they even gave us a little starter pack and were insanely kind to my younger brother. While we were waiting in line a woman was in front of us screaming at the woman behind the counter about having to pay to get her dog back since it had ran away. She called her awful names and slurred harsh words at her for about 15 minutes, then when it was our turn the woman behind the counter said nothing ill of the woman who had screamed at her and instead just moved on being kind to us. I can't imagine dealing with that. All in all I am thankful for them and the handwork that they do that goes unappreciated. read more

This shelter is run by amazing people! They really care about the dogs who come into the shelter. It can be a very busy place. It definitely could use more help by the community. They have a great volunteer program. Check it out, there just might be a perfect spot for you to help. I have been volunteering here for over a year now. I really love it. I definitely see its not just a shelter that throws the dogs in a "cage". They have staff, teams & programs that help these ' strays, abandoned, seniors ' transition to a forever home. I would not recommend this place when trying to adopt a dog. The staff was extremely rude and they all acted like they didn't have time for you. When they called my landlord, he said they were rude to him as well. There are many other places to adopt an animal that don't make you feel like you are under interrogation and that are pleasant to deal with, this is NOT one of them. read more

Clackamas County Dog services is a disaster that lacks all adult supervision. I filed a complaint. see below We are submitting a formal complaint against Clackamas County employee Mindy Bray for the following: unethical behavior, bias, dishonesty, disrespect and harassment. Our first encounter with Ms. Bray was when she wrote a citation and notice of intention to classify our pet (Roman) as a dangerous dog because Roman and another dog bit each other. On October 6, 2017, Ms. Bray spoke with our neighbors. During her communication, she demonstrated her bias in her description of the incident and was baiting/leading our neighbors to describe events that had not occurred, this was reflected in her written report. Ms Bray was dishonest and fabricated false statements by me regarding compliance and cooperation with the complainants and insurance. Ms. Bray continually contacted me by phone with the intent to harass and insight frustration by completely disregard my request to only be contacted by mail. Once again Ms Bray's unadulterated bias and lack of objectivity throughout the process inflamed the tension between us, the other party and Clackamas County to the point that we had to hire an Attorney. At the hearing Ms Bray was late to the hearing knowing that we had hired an Attorney and we were paying this cost by the hour; the hearing was delayed until she arrived. Ms Bray openly lied to the hearings Officer about events that did not take place. Our Attorney Mr. Geordie Duckler told my wife Tammi and I that this was not his first time encounter with Ms Bray. Mr Duckler stated to Tammi and I that Ms Bray has a history of lying and unethical behavior, this is everything that we encountered with Ms Bray. It is amazing that Clackamas County would employ Ms Bray when she clearly is not what Clackamas County describes as their Core Values. With this complaint I formally forbid/trespass Ms Mindy Bray from being on my property and contacting me or any of my family members. Any coordination between us and the County for reasons of the citation needs to be conducted by someone other than Mindy Bray. read more

I came here looking to adopt a dog. I found one that I liked but wanted to know if it was good with children, other dogs or cats. Their website gives no specific information on any of the dogs and when you call, the administrative staff refuses to find the information. Regardless of this, I paid the $10 application fee and put a hold on the dog until they had him neutered and could release him. Later I find out that they take several holds on dogs and it doesn't matter if you get there first, the administrative staff picks and chooses who it goes to. What's the point of even putting them on hold if it's not exclusive? Not only that, but I waited A WEEK for someone to call me back about this dog's medical problem along with the overall adoption status and the woman ELYSE said that she would not get the dogs file because "it was in the other room" and then when I asked her if she could locate it, she said "this conversation is over" and abruptly hung up on me. This wasn't the first rude encounter I had with this woman. We just bought a home one month prior and when they ran the information on my home as part of the application process (which just shows who paid taxes on it the previous year) it showed that it was under the previous owners names. It should be very simple to understand that I wouldn't have paid taxes on a home that I didn't live in the past year. Either way, instead of politely asking if I had documentation of my new home ownership, she left me a snooty message on my phone implying that I was lying and that I did not own my home. I had to drive to the shelter after work to show proof of ownership because they have no other options of submitting the documents. I can't believe this place. I've never been to such a rude and disorganized place. The employee's attitudes were completely unnecessary and I have been going out of my way to follow their adoption procedure. In all of my conversations with the staff, I was friendly and polite. I just wanted to know a little more about the dog because everyone kept referring me to Elyse and that she was the person to ask. But when I would contact her, she would get irritated and refused to answer a few simple questions! I'm very disappointed because I fell in love with the dog but the administrative staff was so unhelpful. You'd think that they would be eager to help to speed up the process to adopt out more dogs, but I guess that's just me thinking logically. *UPDATE: The dog that I was interested in didn't get along with cats. We have a cat so our search continued elsewhere. I found the same dog a month later in another dog shelter with an adoption fee of $350. So you won't adopt the dog out to a family but to a person who is probably just trying to make a profit? Great screening process. read more

I don't blame the shelter for exorbitant registration fees for dogs whose owners do not allow them to socialize or mingle with any other dogs or neighborhood stray cats, dogs, raccoons, skunks, coyotes, etc. and choose not to spay or neuter. But how is it these pet owners' fault that others don't treat their pets, or anything else as lovingly and with as much care? It isn't at all, therefore I can't in good faith give these people any more than 2 stars. read more

My experience with Clackamas County Dog Services has been wonderful. It has taken over a year to find the perfect match of a BFF for my little blind dog. We have met many wonderful pets, who hopefully found perfect homes, but I needed something special. Finally, the perfect little girl came in. She is around 12, overweight, blind, had 11 teeth pulled, a little sick, and absolutely the best match for my little one we could have hoped for. The staff was very helpful, and patient, with me finding a forever pet. Sometimes it IS worth the wait, for the perfect little soul to be dumped by someone who, I hope, just couldn't give her the medical care and special attention she needed. The only reason I even give this shelter one star is because of Janet. I rate her at a 5 stars personally but the shelter in itself is a joke. They're not helpful, friendly, nor knowledgable. When we originally walked in someone started to help us and promptly turned around as someone in the back was becoming a grandmother. We came to look at a Doberman Hope. We were told that she probably wouldn't be suitable. This was without us answering any questions at all. We then expressed our interest in Dexter an American Bulldog. The First Lady that came in to help and took us in the meet and greet room did explain that it was a big dog and they didn't know much about him and to be cautious with our daughter which we of course would be but did appreciate her concern. Dexter was great with Bella and grabbed a toy and went and laid down with her immediately. We spent an hour with the dog. They first woman who was showing us Dexter pointed us in the direction of a hound mix that was a puppy, and likely much better with small dogs and kids. We decided to walk the hound. The dog was super sweet but just not what we wanted. A dog that really would have no problem being adopted it would no doubt find a wonderful family as it was a Puppy. We wanted to rescue. We decided to come back and do a meet and greet with Dexter. Upon arriving no one greeted us or even asked us if we needed help. After looking at each other for 10 minutes we finally asked for help. We expressed our interest in Dexter. We were told they would need to find someone strong enough to walk the dog. The lady that came immediately started citing that this wouldn't be a good mix at all and advised us that we shouldn't look at him. She advised us that she'd been hurt by the dog yesterday while he saw another dog. Thankfully Janet walked by, heard the conversation and promptly stated she would do the walk. Of course the other lady continued to argue saying it wasn't a great idea. Janet said she would handle it and she finally backed off. We waited in the meet and greet room as another dog was already in the play yard. Dexter again grabbed toys and went and sat with our daughter. We finally got to go on the meet and greet. We were more concerned with our current doggie. She's a French bulldog. The walk went wonderfully. We were accepted and set up an adoption pick up the following day. Janet thanked us profusely for giving Dexter a chance stating that the previous employee who tried to dissuade us had sabotaged several adoptions and formed bias against several of the dogs if they growled when they first come in. First of all what dog wouldn't?? They're terrified and scared. Had it not been for Janet we would've walked away from Dexter never giving him A chance. Skip to the following day. We get a call from animal control asking if we've had experience with shelter dogs. Yes we've saved several. Then we went through another hour of questioning about the breed. We explained that Dexter was already signed up for training. On our way to the shelter to pick up our new family member we were told that animal control had stepped in and Dexter had behavioral problems. Are you freaking kidding me! He needed more assessments after he should've been assessed in the first place and we had been offered to take home Dextwr the previous day but we had no bed or crate so we decided to be prepared for his arrival. We spent a small fortune obtaining all his necessities. Not only did they stop the process after we were approved and the " I've been adopted " sticker was on his kennel, they stated he needed to be with kids 16 and older. Great ass backwards job Clack Co. You're awful. Janet you're amazing and keep on doing a Phenomenal job and not having bias to breeds. No one that has bias towards breeds should work in a shelter. read more
