I found Dr. Johnston at Riverwood Dental and he and his team have managed to calm 50 years of past dental trauma and fear. He is calming, the staff is calming, they offer sedation, and the view from their office near Cumberland Mall, is spectacular, seeing all the way past the king & queen building. Under sedation, Dr. J did the fastest and most gentle cleaning of my life, along with three fillings, and also prepped one tooth for a crown and placed the temporary. In that session I had zero anxiety, and was so relaxed and calm, that I was actually drifting in and out of sleep!! I had some of the worst dental pain I've ever experienced last weekend (Saturday into Sunday…read morenight), and I was honestly just trying to find someone who could help quickly. I reached out to a few offices, and Dr. K actually called me back himself and got me scheduled the same day. From the moment I walked in, the experience felt easy. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and didn't waste time getting to the root of the issue (no pun intended). He took care of what he could right away and made sure I was referred to an endodontist for a root canal without any delay. What really stood out to me was the follow-up. He personally checked on me before my procedure and again after, just to make sure I was okay. That level of care isn't something you come across often. I'll definitely be continuing my dental care with him and his office. One thing I do want to mention: if you're scrolling through older reviews, just know those are from years ago and reflect a completely different doctor and staff. While the service is still satisfying the cost has increased! GOOD The bilingual (Spanish) staff is friendly, professional & they send helpful reminder texts! The lobby is clean and comfortable. They have complimentary tiny cups of filtered water and free Wi-Fi. Normally, there's no wait. Cleanings are excellent! Other than the $35 fluoride offer (covered by insurance until you're 18) and occasional "Invisalign push" they don't try to upsell me. There are raffles for items such as a free electric toothbrush. Bonus points for the courtesy toothbrush, toothpaste & proper flossing demonstration! BAD Although the dental hygienists are wonderful, there's a high turnover rate so you rarely get the same one. X-rays can be painful for me so I prefer consistency.. There was the embarrassing time I saw a substitute dentist who filled a cavity that I'm sure was actually chia seeds :(. And the random time there was no dental hygienist so Dr. Szikman had to clean my teeth himself. There's a reason that's not his job! UGLY The real deal breaker is the added expense. The (cash) cost of a cleaning/exam went from $120 to $156! The cash price for exam, cleaning and x-rays (required once annually) increased from $165 to $208! To be fair, they were transparent about the increase & notified me two days before my appointment. SUM Alfaro is still a great office. I tried switching to a different dentist using a Groupon who barely cleaned my teeth. Some of the newer, fancier offices won't even do that for the first visit, they charge to "test your gums" and tell you what kind of cleaning you'll need. This would be a 4 star review but for the price increase. The only difference I've noticed is that they try to check your blood pressure now, but the cuff wasn't working... In sum, I'd recommend Alfaro to those who can afford it, have PPO insurance and don't have to be committed to one dental hygienist. But I'm shopping around!

Before any procedure, I asked Dr. Lola Oh twice if she used--or knew how to use--Biodentine. It is the best liner, bio-base, and direct or indirect pulp-capping agent made of pure tricalcium silicate! She replied, "Yes, we use it; we use Biobase." That was her answer both times I asked before treatment began. She finished the restoration on that tooth. Two weeks later, I felt sensitivity and discomfort when chewing. I went back to see her and asked what type of "Biobase" she had used on my tooth--what the name of the Biobase was. She replied: GLUMA Desensitizer THIS MATERIAL IS NOT A BIOBASE, AND IT WAS NOT THE MATERIAL I ASKED HER TO PUT IN MY TOOTH FROM THE START!!!!!!!! GLUMA Desensitizer does not form a bridge of new dentin!! It does not have compressive strength similar to natural dentin; that is why the pressure and chewing forces irritated the dentinal tubules. Biodentine has a modulus of elasticity similar to natural dentin, so it distributes loads in a more physiological way. GLUMA Desensitizer is not a restorative material AND HAS LESS BIOCOMPATIBILITY THAN BIODENTINE!! Furthermore, GLUMA Desensitizer forms an extremely thin layer. Biodentine can offer a more stable and biological seal, especially in deep cavities, because it not only seals but also promotes the repair of dentin tissue. BUT THIS DENTIST DOESN'T EVEN KNOW THAT MATERIAL; SHE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO USE IT. Stay away from dishonest, "old-school" dentists who don't use bioceramics for pulp protection! Thank goodness I found another dentist on Buford Highway who actually used Biodentine and universal adhesives! Thankfully, I didn't need a root canal. I received this from the debt collector after I asked to see a bill which had never been sent to me. Charges $440 Insurance pmt $180 Credit card pmt $39 Balance due $298.35 which includes a $77.35 late fee. I told the office when I first arrived I only wanted services covered under my insurance plan. They never informed me there was anything extra due at the end of the service, other than $39 which I paid at that time. The debt collector advised me to pay the balance or it would affect my credit! I asked if I had any recourse and they said they don't give advice. They only collect the debt. I told them I didn't think I should be responsible for any of the additional cost since I told the dentist I didn't want to be charged for anything over what insurance covers. Again, they cannot give advice, "only collecting a debt". I said I would agree to pay for services so that it wouldn't affect my credit, but I would not pay for fees for a bill I never received. I grudgingly paid $221. Not only is this dentist using a "bait and switch" on her patients but she never sends a bill and then a year and a half later bills you for erroneous and outrageous additional costs and fees! This should be illegal. And First Federal Credit Control, Inc., Julie, is just as bad to perform this type of service! After reading the Yelp reviews, apparently I'm not the only one that has had this happen at this dentist's office!
