Too many administrative mistakes and poor manners. Care in partnership with insurance aren't explained well prior to treatment. Be sure to triple check your insurance claims that you are being charged for care you're actually getting. There have been some admin issues with claims which were brought to my attention by my insurance and they red-flagged this office. I reached out to Dr. Lumpkin directly more than once and she never cared to respond or explain. I have seen other posts about her poor bedside manner and I can confirm that. I've been to this dentist more than a few times and had some issues of painful cleanings, whereas at other dentists I had no pain. I am a recent transplant to Atlanta, Georgia and found this office via a twitter post of all places. I could not be happier about the experience I had. The entire staff was incredibly welcoming. This was the first time I had ever been to a dentist's office and had my initial anxiety eased as soon as I entered their waiting area. It was so reassuring to be greeted with a smile for once! Big shoutout to Jessica! I typically hate needles but there's just something about the technique used that made my many fillings (more on this later) painless. Again, I usually have terrible anxiety to the point that I grip the arm rests and become tense but I could tell the dentist and assistant were smiling when I asked "wait, you're done with needles already?" PAINLESS. From that moment on, I knew I was finally in the right place. Three decades of dentist office frustrations were gone. I had been to many dentists over the years due to travel and never before had I been taught how to floss and brush CORRECTLY to prevent more issues. Furthermore, the spots other dentists were watching on my teeth, and which I'd repeatedly asked about, were now finally addressed. I am very evidence-based in my own practice as a surgeon, so when I was told I needed work done, I had several questions. To ease my mind, the dentist took high definition photos before my filings. Then immediately after starting to drill she showed me more photos and I could see that the small stains other dentists were watching were in fact HUGE cavities. I had a feeling something was going on because I brush and floss twice a day and don't drink coffee or eat candy. Turns out I wasn't flossing well under my gums and between my teeth. I had spent so much time just focusing on removing food from my teeth but there's so much more to it and the team was very patient in reviewing technique with me. Anyway, I'm rambling but I want to get across the point that I have always been VERY religious about my dental hygiene and I've finally found a place that has corrected my inefficiencies. I almost typed "now I can avoid more fillings" which I'm sure is now true, but given the painless anesthetic experience, that's also less of an issue here. Lastly and probably most important to me - because these HUGE nasty appearing cavities were found below small spots (not even seen on Xray! And trust me I asked to see my Xrays), the team at Vinings spared me an eventual root canal!! I'm honestly in disbelief and so grateful. I've told all my family and friends in the Georgia area about this team. They have all had great feedback about both Drs. Lumpkin and Payandeh. If there's nothing else you do, just make an appointment for an exam with these folks. I have a dentist already but was looking for a simple 2nd opinion from Dr Lumpkin before having work done. This office was very unprofessional before I even made it in. I never authorized them to begin texting my cell phone but they did and harassed me about giving them a social security number over the phone. I let them know what insurance plan I had and I wouldn't mind verifying info in person. That was clearly upsetting to them and they proceeded to harass me via many text messages and then got upset that I chose not to come in. They even insinuated I didn't have coverage and said "well if you don't have insurance you're going to have to pay xxx amount for a cleaning." I never said I was coming for a cleaning. I cannot express the level of ignorance and unprofessionalism I experienced with them via phone calls and text messages. I believe it was Jessica who was very snippy, micro aggressive, rude and then they got very angry when I returned the energy. One message said, "good luck with the next dentist!" so i replied and said "I wish you well and good luck with future clients" and then they said "STOP, you're being blocked!". WHAT? Laughing out loud. This stuff is horrible and you cannot make it up. I go out of my way to specifically find and support Black doctors. I'm always really looking forward to positive experiences while trying to support. I can only hope Dr. Lumpkin wouldn't stand by or approve of this behavior coming from her office staff. TLDR: 0 out of 5 stars. I will never go back. She bullies you into expensive and unnecessary treatment plans and gets annoyed at any questions you have. I went to Dr Lumpkin about a year ago. I should have written this earlier, but didn't think it was worth the time writing a bad review. My visits were collectively the worst dental experience I have ever had. Note that I have been going to the dentist every 6 months for my entire life, only ever having minimal issues (a cavity or two when I was younger). 6 months prior to this visit, I had been told by another dentist that my mouth looked great and there were no concerns. At my first visit, I was told that there was rot on every one of my teeth. I was basically tag teamed and bullied by Dr Lumpkin and the hygienist, who said that my teeth were in extremely bad shape and I (a 24 year old) needed a lesson in how to properly brush my teeth. Having never been misled by a dentist or doctor before in my life, I assumed they were right and signed up for my cavity fillings. At my next appointment, I got seated in the chair and the hygienist applied some novocain. I was only then informed that this visit would be the first of three, because I had nine cavities on different sides of my mouth. Why this was not told to me before still haunts me. "Your whole mouth is rotten" is not a proper description of the treatment plan. Since my mouth was already numbed, I let her drill three of my teeth. She got noticeably annoyed at me when I started asking questions and showing my skepticism. I have had 2 cavities in my life, and now 6 months after a clean dental visit I suddenly had 9. I asked for pictures and a treatment plan to send to my real dentist in my hometown. For transparency, there was definitely decay that was easy to see. I will not accuse her of making up the condition of my mouth, but it was clearly exaggerated. My dentist at home gave me a (much smaller) list of the teeth that should be worked on. I came back for another visit with this in mind, and let Dr Lumpkin start working. As she was drilling, she began saying that there were more teeth that needed work and she would begin drilling them. I asked which ones. She became very irritated that I would even dare ask. When I compared these new teeth to my real dentist's list, they were nowhere to be found. I told her she should not touch any more teeth. At the end, she basically gave me an ultimatum that I either had to trust and go along with whatever she said or find a new dentist; I couldn't keep listening to my hometown dentist over her. A couple weeks later when I was in my hometown, I went to my old dentist. He checked out the tooth that Dr Lumpkin was previously about to drill and said there was nothing. He also stated that some of the other teeth that she wanted to drill were just surface level blemishes, which he cleaned off for free. Dr Lumpkin is mean, arrogant, and overall a bad dentist. She clearly was taking advantage of a new customer, who she assumed had never been to a dentist before. Anything health related should be a two way street where patients are given as much information as possible and allowed to make their own decisions and ask questions about their situation. Dr Lumpkin clearly does not see it that way, and expects you to follow her expensive, exaggerated, and made-up-as-you-go treatment plan or else. read more

As pretty & clean as this office is, every time I left from my service, I sat in the car and cried for about ten minutes. The receptionist was always pleasant, Jessica. I liked her. The first time, I had a dental hygienist tell me that I had periodontal disease and gave me an information sheet about it with no regard to my feelings or if I had any questions. It was very condescending and unprofessional. The doctor did try to console me a bit once the tears started flowing. However, she said that my oral health is very similar to my reproductive (vaginal) health. As a OB-GYN nurse, I've never heard such a thing and felt even more uncomfortable and insulted. After these two horrifying blows, I still came back for another procedure to have fill-ins done. They knew me as the "cryer." To this day, this dentistry haunts me. However, I have found a new amazing dental practice and they truly care for my well-being and my dental health. I hope nobody ever has to endure what I have here at this practice. I hope they can learn from this and be more appropriate to their patients and their patients emotions. read more

One word to describe Dr. Lumpkin: maestro! I've been coming here for the last 10 years and it's been a great experience for our family. Dr. Lumpkin is the best, most professional dentist I have ever had and we are grateful to be her patients. When I first saw Dr. Lumpkin, she gave me an initial exam and had outlined a treatment plan that would help me get back to great dental health. I was happy that she had taken the time to explain everything and go over the order in which I would need to take care of my issues (I had a few cavities) so that it would not impact my quality of life. We've also grown very fond of her staff and how incredibly caring (and effective) her dental hygienists are. We appreciate being cared for and on a personal level, she goes out of her way to make you feel special! This dentist is absolutely amazing! I have never experienced a dentist such as this one. From the time I entered the office, it was just so warm and welcoming. I went for my semi-annual cleaning, and it was the best cleaning I have ever received. Dr. Lumpkin and the dental assistant were so honest, transparent, and thorough with my service. Since I made Atlanta my home, I wanted to find a dentist in the area. I am sure that this will be my dentist forever. Update: make sure you find out if this dentist is in your network (if that's how your insurance works)! I went once and will not be going back. First, the office is nice and comfortable and the front desk staff was friendly and helpful. However, I believe the Dentist is, at best, overly aggressive in her treatment plans, or, at worst, trying to run up a bill. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume it's the former. I'd been seeing my previous dentist for about 8 years and he said everything was fine with my teeth. He retired and a new dentist took over. The new one also said my teeth were in good shape. I needed to change offices and tried Dr. Lumpkin at the recommendation of some friends. She said I needed 5 fillings and possibly some more work. After that visit, I went and got 2 more opinions from other dentists. Both of those dentists said there was no need for fillings. So in the end, 4 different dentists said my teeth were in good shape and Dr. Lumpkin said I need at least 5 fillings. Also, I did not like her bedside manner. When she first came to me she did not even introduce herself. When she was discussing my teeth she was sitting behind my head talking between me and her assistant. I often couldn't tell when she was talking to me. I had to ask them to turn off the in room TV. When she was done she left the room without so much as a "goodbye or nice to meet you". read more

Here's my previous review. Dr. Lumpkin is friendly, patient, helpful and everything you need in a doctor. She listens and answers questions thoughtfully. She does not pressure you to do unnecessary work (which my last dentist did) and she correctly bills my insurance so that I do not end up having to deal with them myself. Most importantly, for me, my visits are pain free. My last dentist was so painful I felt like I was undergoing a right of passage to see how much pain I could tolerate without breaking down and asking them to ease up. I've experienced nothing but a pleasant and friendly atmosphere since I've been visiting Dr. Lumpkin's office over the past 5 years. I've gotten several successful fill-ins and she has given me a great routine to get rid of my tooth sensitivity. She is very thorough in explaining/answering any and all of my questions. It took me a very long time to find a great dentist in my area with this type of knowledge and patience. The dental hygienists here are also Awesome. My routine dental cleanings are very intensive and thorough, they have managed to keep my teeth squeaky clean between visits and I cant help but smile when I leave this office. Dr. Lumpkin's receptionist Jessica is awesome with keeping in touch with my insurance carrier and updating me on what is covered under my dental plan. Looks can be deceiving!!! While Vinings Center for Dentistry looks very nice, the service is questionable. The front staff and the hygienist were good but Dr. Lumpkin was rude. They manner in which she spoke to her staff made me uncomfortable and the way she spoke to me was shocking. All in all, I'm sure Dr. Lumpkin is qualified but she'll NEVER see me in her office again. I would suggest getting a second opinion if she urges for you to have an extensive amount dental work done and you've never needed major work before. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Lumpkin's for the past several years. She started off in this small building off of Windy Hill Road, but upgraded to her current office space in Vinings a couple of years ago. Dr. Lumpkin and her staff make coming in for an office visit as painless as possible. The ladies that work in the front office are friendly and the dental hygienists complete their work while trying to make sure that you are as comfortable as possible. Dr. Lumpkin does a great job of explaining exactly what she is going to do and why. The office does file your insurance claim for you, so that's an additional step that you don't have to do. Vinings Center for Dentistry is THE BEST. I've never had such a positive dental experience. From the time you call until you leave you are treated in a kind and timely manner. It was easy to book appointments with Jessica and I never waited more than about 3 minutes in the waiting room. Dr. Lumpkin is clearly knowledgeable and after 30 years of practicing I trust her 100%. She is direct but keeps you informed and pain free. My exam and cleaning with Young were the most thourogh I've had in years. The absolute deal maker for me was Wendy. She assisted Dr. Lumpkin for my fillings and she is an angel. I've never met such a compassionate health professional. She kept me calm and comfortable from start to finish. First of all, let me just say, that this is the cleanest that my teeth have been in a long time. I got my teeth cleaned yesterday and they are still squeaky! I am a person that NEVER misses a dentist appt. this was my very first appointment and I am thoroughly impressed. The dentist and all of her staff are extremely friendly and very welcoming. She is SO informative and detailed. I was this close to passing out after seeing my teeth up close. Oh yes, there are pictures of every single crevice of all 32 teeth. I thought I was doing a good job of maintaining the health of my teeth but low and behold, the pictures told a different story. I felt like my previous dentists jipped me out of time and money. They were just going to watch my fillings deteriorate and let my teeth just fall out my mouth! Long story shot.. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS DENTIST. I loved the staff but during my first visit I was a little put off by Dr. Lumpkin. My teeth weren't in the best condition since I didn't have insurance for 6 years. When I mentioned that to her she was pretty much, your teeth are a part of your health, yadda, yadda, yadda. I finally said to her sternly, when you have to choose between your rent, car note and food, teeth will always loose. I still continued going because of the staff and now I like Dr. Lumpkin. I do NOT recommend this dentist! I selected Dr. Lumpkin's practice based on the glowing reviews both here and on Google, so I was hoping for the best and honestly excited about going to the dentist (which I normally dread) before I went in for my appointment. Jessica was AWESOME and checked me in with a smile and a pleasant demeanor. My appointment, however, was inefficient and Dr. Lumpkin had a poor bedside manner. My hygienist was kind and personable, but had some trouble with taking the pictures that are required at your initial appointment. She ended up having to troubleshoot the camera & take the pictures twice, which took a significant amount of time. It took almost 2 hours from the start of my appointment to the point where Dr. Lumpkin came in to see me (and this was NOT including any sort of cleaning - just x rays, a gum/teeth evaluation, and the pictures). When Dr. Lumpkin arrived, she did not introduce herself and was definitely more "about business". She was abrasive, direct almost to a fault, and did not present as warm or inviting (this is important to me in a dentist, but others might be a better fit for this type of personality). She did appear to be very knowledgeable, but presented her knowledge in an almost condescending way that was very off-putting. By the end of my visit, I'd been in the office for 2.5 hours and still did not receive a cleaning. I will not be returning to this office, which was really disappointing for me because I was initially very excited about my impending visit. My interactions with Jessica & the kindness of my hygienist are the ONLY reason I gave more than 1 star. read more

Really disappointed in this office. I scheduled an appointment 2 wks in advance so that I could take off work to make my ob/gyn appt and dental visit on the same day. This place scheduled me at the specific time I told them I could not make it instead of 3pm like we agreed upon. The day of I get a phone call saying i am late for my 11am appt. While I am at my 11am appt with my ob/gyn doctor. So I call and explain that there was a mix up on their end and unfortunately they were not accommodating at all. If I would have received a confirmation call prior to the appt time this whole situation could have been fixed and you would not have lost a new patient before my first cleaning. read more

Absolutely terrible! I cannot say enough terrible things about this horrible dentist and her audacity! I was VERY upset when I left this office so I gave myself a day to cool off before writing this review. As other reviewers have mentioned, the front desk and hygienist were helpful and professional but Dr Lumpkin was VERY rude. She spoke down to her staff and corrected them rudely in front of me and when I inquired as to something she told the hygienist she seemed angry as if I was eavesdropping on her conversation about MY TEETH. She was also very, let's just say sassy, with me. When I was telling her about a bad experience I had with a dentist before she scoffed and rolled her eyes the whole time. Also my cell phone rang while she was talking to the hygienist in the room and I answered it, spoke briefly with the person calling (MAYBE 2 minutes at the most) and apologized explaining I had been waiting on the call for a few days so I really couldn't miss it. She turned to me and said going forward while I am in her office my phone should be on silent and it is very rude to accept phone calls while others are in the room. I had been in her office for almost 4 hours, this was the absolute longest doctor or dentist appointment I ever encountered so the idea that my entire life should be on hold for hours just to satisfy whatever narcissistic tendency she has is absolutely absurd. She completely crossed the line with that comment but she continued to cut me off mid sentence and tell me my teeth were basically rotting out of my head even though I have never had any problems. She gave me a treatment plan that would cost several thousand dollars and highlighted TEN cavities that needed treatment when I just saw my previous dentist less than 6 months ago and I had ZERO cavities or problems! I almost never write reviews but this woman was just so mean to me and I couldn't figure out why. I will NEVER go there again and I hope no one else does either. read more

Form the moment I made my appointment until after my appointment, everyone I encountered were professional and courteous. Jessica helped me get set up with my first appointment and she was kind each phone conversation and during our face to face conversation. Once I went to the back, Young (I believe the dental hygienist) was with me all of my visit. This was my first visit with the office and I am usually uncomfortable at the dentist. Young explained everything to me prior to doing it. She also explains the reason for doing it (something that has never happened). She was kind with explaining the dental concerns found during the examination and with showing me proper brushing and flossing techniques. (Who would have known you can brush your teeth incorrectly). By the time Dr. Lumpkin came into the room I had learn much valuable information from Young. Dr. Lumpkin was very gentle and kind as well. She is also funny. Again I dislike the dentist and do not have great teeth. She helped me to feel comfort and was honest learning I could stop further damage but it may be challenging. I loved her joke about getting to the pearly gates and seeing St. Peter and not having "all my parts." I could of fell out my chair laughing at that but I tried to hold it in. This is a great group of people and I would recommend any and every one that I can to go check them out. They are knowledgeable and have the best customer service I've encountered from a dentist thus far. This is coming from a person who gets anxiety about the dentist and has had poor experiences with dental issues. I actually wish I would have found them sooner. I LOVE MY DENTIST! Honest. Integral. Ethical. Cutting Edge. Knowledgeable. Kind. Cozy. Yes - cozy. My first visit, upon getting in the chair for my examination and simply mentioning that I was cold a pleasant staff member fetched a super cozy, snuggly and warm blanket. While coziness may not be the typical driver for one dentist over the other but in this instance, it's the cherry that topped my experience. Not only is Dr. Lumpkin the most honest and ethical dentist I've had in my adult years, she is also extremely knowledgable with great bedside manner. Over the year's I've found that unethical dentist make their money off nonexistent problems in your mouth. They treat you for issues that may not exist or exaggerate issues that may not be as bad thus leading to exorbitant fees and exaggerated cost. That is NOT the case with Dr. Lumpkin, and very much the opposite. She is the BEST dentist I've ever had in my adult years and HIGHLY RECOMMEND her to the world. You'll thank me later. read more

PLEASE read this before you go!!!!! First off, the receptionist gives the impression that this is about to be a great experience but i couldn't have been more wrong!!! Dr. Lumpin is so insensitive to your dental problems!!! She expresses no empathy whatsoever cold and also very ruff with her instruments. She is not on the same page with her dental assistants at all!!! You'll see once they begin the actual work!! The lack of common courtesy I can deal with. Maybe she's not a people person. But this is what i CANNOT tolerate. You ready? Well first off they gave me a quote with my dental insurance included before actually beginning the process. Then they suggested that i apply for a care credit card so that I can get the work done then pay on terms. I did that and was approved. But on my next visit they found several more things wrong to charge me for, enough that they charged the entire card balance!!! And i can somewhat understand if it had been been a long time, but it was only a WEEK later when i went back!!!! I was quoted for about $2,000 but charged 5,000!!!!! they did not tell me what they were doing during the process!!!! I thought they were doing what i was quoted on!!!! They charged the ENTIRE balance of the card!!!!And on top of that, they did not bill my insurance which they already had on file!!! And if that's not enough, how about they haven't even scheduled another appointment to finish the job that is already paid for!!!!! It been like a month and a half now!!! Haven't heard a peep from them!!! I hope you all read this post before going here. I'm calling the better business bureau in the mourning on these guys!!! I've read all these other posts and i absolutely don't believe ANY of them!!! They probably wrote them themselves!!! They probably erase the bad ones.
