I come here pretty much weekly to impulse purchase San Marzano canned tomatoes and a fancy pasta for my Sunday gravy. This is a Pasta EMPORIUM! The shelves are lined with every type imaginable, from your classic spaghetti to gorgeous nests of tagliatelle all'uva to the fattest rigatoni you've ever seen. The packaging is just begging to be gifted (in fact, I came here yesterday to complete my Christmas shopping for the whole family). Claudio's also has a nice selection of olive oils, vinegars, jams, and tomato pastes, ranging from the inexpensive to the pricy. The place is small, though, which can become very difficult to navigate (especially in the holiday crowds). I've personally never bought anything fresh from the glass case, but hoards of traveling families convene in this area and shout out their orders, so it can get chaotic when trying to check out as a single, local customer. Is this how native Romans feel when tourists flock to their favorite gelato place? Marinated octopus! Pepperoncini! Mozzarella! A wheel of parmesan! The list goes on. It's an antipasto lover's wet dream. The staff is helpful but also a tad intimidating. Sometimes I think they're judging me for only buying pasta. Yesterday, the guy said, "Really? That's everything?" I think he meant it to mean, "You sure you don't want these gorgeous roasted red peppers?" Either way, it's the Italian Market. Get in, get your shit, get going. We are originally from the Philadelphia area and savored cuisines from many restaurants from Phila to Chester County to the shore, etc. We enjoyed the Garces, Vetri and Starr restaurants, and lunches at Dante & Luigi's or Ralph's. We would visit every cheesesteak/ pork sandwich with broccoli rabe shop from Montesano's in Chester Springs to Tony Luke's to The White House in Atlantic City. We visited Reading Terminal Market and the Italian Market sourcing ingredients from Claudio's, Esposito's and Talluto's. And Isgro. Fifteen years ago, cold temperatures, snow, sleet and rain chased us out of Philadelphia. We looked at Florida and Texas but opted for Tucson in the Sonoran Desert where we have perfect weather all year. BUT we miss the Philadelphia cuisines which we so loved. We also missed our Philadelphia sports teams that would excite us and disappoint us. The sports we could watch on our local Comcast and we could mail order cheeses, olives, olive oils, and all the other Italian ingredients that were not available in Tucson. And our daughter in south Philly remains a local connection. Now in Tucson, and for years, we have been ordering from Claudio's and receiving a "Philly Care Package" via UPS. Although they use planet unfriendly Styrofoam peanuts for packing material, we were always thrilled at receiving a 'gift' from Philadelphia. Earlier this month, as in years past, we were on the Claudio's website perusing items to order. We could smell and taste each item and we recalled the ambience of the Claudio's store and Sal offering us tastes of special cheeses. Our order for Locatelli Romano, Prima Donna, Cici beans, Parmagiano Reggiano, Provolone, etc., totaled $102. With shipping our order was $159. The weights we requested were not even close. These guys are professional deli guys. They know how to cut cheese and weigh items. They do it every day all day long. Our total charges went from $159 to $195. We were disappointed that were charged $42 for 12lb UPS shipping Philadelphia to Tucson when the actual rate is $22. As all Philadelphia sports fans have come to know disappointment, this time, Claudio's surely disappointed us. We truly felt as if Claudio's, like Jaylen Hurts, took a safety in the end zone, did not care much and nonchalantly lost the game. read more

Talk about little Italy. Claudio's is just like being in Italy. It has been a South Philly staple in the Italian market for around 60 plus years. They've got meats and cheeses you've never even heard of. I highly recommend going in and getting a quarter pound of a couple of meats and cheeses for a sampling board. They also have Italian imported oil and basalmic vinegar. I purchased some truffle polenta as well. The service is wonderful. They will help you find anything you need to cook a gourmet Italian meal. read more

Top-quality cheese & salumeria. Service leaves a lot to be desired. I ordered from the website. They offer food in whole-pound amounts, 1 lb being the smallest. I ordered several 1-lb chunks, but the packaging person cuts off however much he wants. Based on my order, you could get anywhere between 1.1 lb and 1.7 lbs. Also be aware that their site has sub-minimal functionality. It sends out meaningless emails, but the shop people don't send anything. No "Thanks for your order", no estimated ship date, not even a confirmation of fulfillment. read more

Standing in front of one of Claudio's vast shelves of dried pasta, Moms and I were engaged in a lively debate about bucatini and what it looks like. A friend of hers heard she was coming to Philadelphia's Italian Market and requested Moms bring bucatini back, claiming you "just can't find it anywhere in DC" (and despite the fact that we live in the age of the Internet and you could overnight bucatini straight to your door, but I digress). I've never cooked the noodle, but I've watched enough cooking shows to know exactly what bucatini is. Moms was challenging my authority when we heard a soft and mellifluous, "Eh, scusi..." Turning around, we came eye-to-hat with a wizened old paisano, nattily dressed in a cropped trench and tweed pageboy. *swoon* He stooped to a lower shelf, pulled out a celo bag of noodles, and handed them to Moms. "Bucatini," he said slowly, his hand waving over the package label. In beautiful but broken English, he managed to explain the difference between several of the long pastas we'd been examining. We nodded, completely entranced by his authenticity, and managed a, "Grazie, signore..." as he shuffled off, bidding us good day. After he had disappeared through the front door, we looked down at the package he'd placed in Moms' hands: unbroken ziti. *wommmp womp* Claudio's is the type of place where you'll find Italian-Americans shopping for the groceries they cooked with back in Italy. There's an enormous (practically incomprehensible) number of dried pastas in all shapes and sizes. Vast arrays of olive oils, tapenades, pestos, and antipasti. There are two people in Philadelphia: DiBruno's fans and Claudio's fans. Count me among the latter. Claudio's selection is second-to-none for Italian specialty foods in the United States. Having grown up just outside NYC and briefly living in San Francisco off Columbus Street, this is simply the best. Positive notes; - Samples cut *for* you, not haphazardly strewn about in common cups around the store. (Ahem) - It smells like provolone and olives when you walk in. Really. - They OWN a mozzarella baller and make it on site. It's the best mozzarella you'll ever have. - The staff is incredibly knowledgable and will happily help you decide between items or make recommendations. - The food. Oh God, the food. So good. Negatives: - Unless you are a masochist and/ or enjoy waiting on line for hours; avoid this place like the plague the day before major holidays... Thanksgiving, Easter and most especially Christmas eve. Things to try: - The Bresaola (Bernina Uruguayan Bresaola properly). Just amazing. I could eat it unaccompanied and from my palm all day and be blissfully contented. - A 1/2 lb of asiago and a link or two of their pepperoni. Slice them up, makes a really easy appetizer literally everyone loves. - Their online ordering is fantastic. I sent stuff an order to my aunt and uncle in San Francisco and it arrived in perfect condition. - The go to cheese nearly everyone loves is Prima Donna. - If you like wine, give their Testun Occelli al Barolo a shot. It's a free range cow/ goat cheese casked in expressed grapes from Barolo wine. It's to die for. - Their lemon ricotta cake is decadent and other-worldly on a hot summer afternoon in the Italian market. And the staff is only too happy to give you a sample. :) read more

Another five stars for homemade fresh mozzarella and ricotta! When I'm in need of a REAL classic cheese market around the Italian Market, Claudio's is always my prime destination. From plenty of fine cheeses and artisan meats; to an impressive selection of pastas, olives, and oils, its pretty easy to find yourself getting lost in the crowd that comes with a busy market day for good reason. Which is why its best to come on an off day where you have a better chance of picking the knowledgeable staffs brain for suggestions. And while the varieties of fresh mozzarella and ricotta (especially Vinny's baked suggestion) are indeed amazing; the best cheese you can pick up here is by far any version of the aged provolone's that they offer! read more

Fantastic little specialty shop in the middle of the Italian Market...right where it should be. Their meats and cheeses are of the freshest quality. Very lean meats. My guests were all extremely impressed with what I put my on my charcuterie board I served last night for Halloween. They all commented before I even said anything! The guys here are super friendly and incredibly knowledgeable which to a girl who doesn't eat any of these items, that was very helpful!! You can tell they enjoy what they do! Claudio's offers very generous sized samples too. That makes shopping here a blast for some! Prices here are lower than what I'm normally used to paying also! I'll definitely be back soon for all of the upcoming holidays!! I believe Claudio's, which was a cinch to park in front of on a weekday afternoon is going to be our new go-to for these items. Oh dear, this place is only a few minutes from work by foot. Don't come in here if you don't like Italian delicacies because you'll run screaming out the door. This place is like a mecca for all things Italian - the fresh pasta, olive oil, cheese, sausages and other meats. If the only prosciutto you've ever tried came from a plastic package that you had to use a knife to open, then you need to come here and get you some parma prosciutto. We started our visit in thr Italian market with this shop. Everyone seemed friendly. I didn't want to hold my purchase while I walked around the market so we decided to come back on our way out. When we returned I grabbed my stuff and waited at the counter for help. There were people in line she we waited out turn. As the line thinned out so did the help I waited at the counter watching the help walk by and I said to my husband if someone does help me soon I'm out which is what happened, we put down the products and went next store and purchased there. Dear Claudio, At first I only strayed from DiBruno's for your marinated string cheese, those savory little morsels beckoning from beyond the punching bag-sized cheeses hanging in the front of the store. But eventually I realized you were less crowded than your more famous neighbor, and your lines move faster too. Soon you had me sold on your amazing gouda, fabulous olive oils and that weird baked cheese (seriously, what is that?). But you couldn't stop there, oh no--you had to seduce my girlfriend too, with your silky triple-cream brie. It's come between us... literally. On the cheeseboard. On the sofa. Between us. There is no better place in Philly for Italian specialties and incredibly warm and friendly service. Buon Italia at the Chelsea Market in NYC might have more inventory, but they can't compare on service. The guys behind the counter at Claudio's will take their time with you and make sure you get plenty of samples, advice, tips and recommendations. Of course the cheeses will make you close your eyes and wish this moment would never end, but don't pass on the imported marinated vegetables, pesto, sun dried tomatoes etc. Everything from the case is just on another level from any other antipasto or deli case you have ever tasted.
