    Pastrami Lox
    Shelly V.

An out of town customer at my job last week could not stop talking about Biederman's. I cannot believe it took a visitor from Florida to tell me about this neighborhood gem. I was going to buy Scottish Lox that Joey recommended. However the reviews mentioned the Pastrami Lox. I was given a sample and doubled my order. I also purchased some fresh bagels. I will definitely be a regular!!!

Finally made it to Biederman's Specialty Foods: totally worth the walk to 8th and Christian! The shop itself was pretty, clean, and inviting.* Once within, be prepared to splurge, as everything is eye catching. I even learned about, and got to taste, a sesame-based halva. We got a 1/4 pound of the Scottish dry-cured salmon, a 1/4 pound of the pastrami-edged cured salmon, a few bagels, a container of chive cream cheese, a small black bread, a container of tuna salad, a full-sour dill pickle, and a cinnamon, walnut rugelach, and then we skedaddled home so we could feast. It was difficult not to eat everything in one sitting: definitely recommend a trip to Biederman's, a hat tip to Gene Mopsik, the loxsmith**, and next time I'm definitely snagging a loaf of challah, whether or not I "need" bread! *I was particularly impressed with the staff, who quickly, politely, and firmly enforced the "masks required within" rule. **https://thepenngazette.com/the-lox-slicer/.

If you want to really Biederman at your next socially distanced outdoor brunch get together, or just need something to look forward to, come wait in line for probably the best lox in the city. I'm not Jewish but this shiksa knows her way around a lox platter and this was some extremely delicious lox. I got 1/4 lb of the scottish dry cured salmon and also got a small jar of capers, a sesame bagel, a pint of pickled beets, the farmers cheese (labneh with dill and scallion), a potato knish and a cinnamon walnut rugelach. All together it came to $40, which is probably more than I should be spending for breakfast for 1 but I ended up sharing with a friend and I still have beets and cheese leftover. They have lox of different types of lox- pastrami, vodka dill, nova, kippered, and they have a few types of cream cheese, fancy cheeses from Vermont (I'm talking $20 wedges), pickled onions, pickles, whitefish. salad, some baked goods (hamentachen), halva, challah and matzoh, soups, truly everything jew need for a proper brunch spread. Unfortunately they don't do individual sandwiches ( hopefully they start to) but they do brunch boards ( which go live for sale on Wednesdays and seem to be selling out). Come challah at Biedermans, you won't be disappointed ( but your wallet might be).

Biederman's is by far some of the best smoked fish I have ever had on this earth... and I have had quiet a good bit. Last year I discovered them and picked some up and drove it all the way up to Connecticut, and boy it was a hit. This year, I selected a handful of things and brought them to Thanksgiving dinner as appetizers and I cannot begin to explain how many compliments and how quickly it disappeared. This year I got: -nova -king salmon -pastrami salmon -sturgeon -white fish salad -trout salad -pickled green maters -picked jalepenos -capers -pickled beets -chive and caper cream cheese -tons of crackers (everything, pumpernickel and berry) Chopped it all up, rolled the fish into a platter. Will be back again, just ate all the secret leftovers I hid in the fridge in a bagel. Have reccomended to friends, love it! Thank you so much!

Lox is amazing!! I got the pastrami lox, gravalox and whitefish salad, all great. They slice it thicker than most places, usually "you can read a newspaper through it." I kinda liked it thicker but will need to do a side by side comparison to decide which I like better (just giving myself an excuse to go back). It's about time Philly got our own Russ & Daughters! Lauren (the owner) is so nice and has such passion for the business. Place is incredibly clean and has a very modern design. I also bought some of the cheese they have in the fridge that was very good (don't remember the name). Bagels were good but not great. I will absolutely be back (again and again).

The four of us found the Dutch on Yelp, and headed there from our hotel in Philly. It reminded my wife and I of some of the neighborhood spots. We enjoyed so much in our own town of Baltimore. The waitress, JENN, was fantastic. I think she had every table, but every employee were doing their part. The chef must handpick the ingredients, because everything was fresh and delicious. My wife and I each had a special pressed fruit drink to start, and it was a perfect appetizer if you will. Very refreshing and energizing. The food was amazing. I had the mushroom omelette. The mushrooms were very fresh and not overcooked. The omelette was thick, but not foamy. All of the ingredients were handled with care on the inside. The taste of truffles was a nice addition. My wife had the salmon omelette, and it was out of this world. Possibly the best omelette I've ever tasted. She agreed. Delicate, perfectly cooked, and absolutely delicious. One of our boys had a huge waffle covered in fresh berries, and just the right amount of whipped cream. He said it was the best waffle he ever had, and I have to agree. Light and fluffy and sweet, he didn't even add syrup. Perfect. Our other son had the double cheeseburger. Again, cooked perfectly, and the avocado was very fresh and an excellent addition. When we are in Philly again, this will be our breakfast spot. An absolute pleasure dining here. I highly recommend.

Food was fine and the speed of the service was similar. I wish the potatoes were less salty and had more flavor and I prefer my omelettes to be cooked with the vegetables imbedded in the eggs without the vegetables sitting inside the egg like a taco. (This version did somewhere between the two). However, I would return to get more breakfast basics. I have had Dutch pancakes that pack more flavor but no ones complaining! My friends had never had them before so I was a bit disappointed because I really hyped them up to be a great standalone pancake however they had a great time once they put syrup on theirs! Overall will be back.

I ended up getting the Playoff Party flavor, which I believe is only offered when one of the Philly teams is in the playoffs, and it was basically an Oreo ice cream lover's dream. The Earl Grey Honeycomb was also SO good. You could actually taste the Earl Grey tea flavor clearly, and the honeycomb balanced it perfectly without overpowering it. One thing I really liked about their ice cream in general was the texture because it had that perfect consistency where it's firm and dense but still soft. It's definitely on the pricier side though. Our total came out to around $15-16 for two single scoops, with one being in a waffle cone. I also wanted a waffle cone on the side, so they gave my single scoop in a larger bowl instead which I thought was really considerate. However, the waffle cone is on the thicker side so it's not as crispy. That said, for the price you are getting noticeably larger scoops, so honestly I still think it's very worth it. Would definitely come back to try more flavors.

The tahini fudge was very toasty, but the fudge didn't hold up; pistachio had crunch but lacked the nut's flavor; the lemon curd wasn't tart enough for me, nor did I get much flavor from the blueberries. If you like a less creamy ice cream you'll like the texture. I'll try a vegan option the next time.

She gave us attitude for trying to clean up the previously used table, as well as "loitering" on the sidewalk. By the way, half the bar is outdoors on the public sidewalk. Also, we had brought drinks from a previous bar, which made us receive even more attitude from this waitress due to "not being able to bring alcohol from other places". This would be a totally understandable and easy thing to rectify if handled kindly. No where on the premise are there signs on the PUBLIC sidewalk that we can't bring drinks from a previous bar, nor did she communicate to us in a kind manor that we could not have drinks on the sidewalk. It is legal in Philly to have open containers while walking around, so the attitude and disrespect to multiple members of my party was unacceptable. During the majority of our time, this waitress was chit-chatting with her friends instead of doing her job, and bringing them multiple drinks. It is unfortunate because this bar is super cool, but our waitress was so mean that my review has to be so low. Pics for proof we were here!
