I've lived in Boulder for almost a year and have been itching to get a new tatt. However I was very reluctant to go forward as I used the same parlor in Florida for a dozen years and I wasn't sure I'd be able to find someone that made me happy. I live right by Claw and Talon and walk past there all the time and it always seems busy. I carefully read all the reviews I could and most of the neagtive ones were very old so I took that into consideration and decided to go for it. All I can say is wow! Mark went above and beyond. At the end of the (4 hour process) he took a minute to carefully look over the tatt to make sure he hadn't missed anything. I've NEVER had an artist do that. I could go on and on but the bottom line is: don't pay any attention to the shit reviews. I have lots of tatts and know amazing work when I see it. read more

Sooooo I usually don't leave reviews because I feel like a lot of people just complain about stupid shit, but here we go. This review is based purely off first impression I called this shop yesterday afternoon wondering how busy they were and if it would be a good time to walk in..? Ya know, trying to be understanding of time and whatnot. Told the gentleman on the phone I was looking to get a 3-4 inch tattoo on my sternum. I wish I had his name so I could give him this really GREAT shoutout! His reply to me was, "well the sternum is the most painful spot to get tattooed, a lot of girls come in wanting that area done and if you can't sit through it without wiggling, it won't look good." At this point I feel a little offended, but I also know he is giving me his professional opinion.. to which I reply, "well I have a big piece on my back with work done on the spine.. would it be similar or..?" Genuinely having NO IDEA ( I'm not the professional.) HE LAUGHS AT ME!! Like, are you kidding me? He tells me to go a head and come on in and we can talk, but uhhh why would I? Some of the work that comes out of this shop is amazing. So I'm bummed I was met with such ego. I would just like to add that I have a huge social anxiety and whether I'm being sensitive or not it took me almost 30 min to work up the courage to call this shop. I'm not a baby and I take things in stride.. but it truly upsets me that I reached out to you guys and was treated like a fool. I don't enjoy being laughed at. You don't know me, you don't know my pain tolerance. At the end of the day I will search for another shop, with another tattoo artist who will help me with kindness and compassion.. and simply because they are happy too, it's what they love to do, right? I was demeaned, ignored, and patronized -- treated like crap -- because I didn't have a big inventive tattoo in mind. I have never experienced a less professional environment. I am not a newbie to the body art world. I have good-sized unique original work on my back, and I worked in Lyle Tuttle's tattoo shop in San Francisco in the mid-90s as their first henna artist. I get what it feels like to have yet another person request a $15 one-inch geometric flower from the flash book, or yet another boring fierce skull. But it can't matter. That flower or skull means something to the client who chose it, and it's the duty of the artist to make it as beautiful and perfect as we can for them; to say yes to help create whatever it fires in their imagination. This is in stark contrast to my experience at Claw and Talon. My request to discuss the design before my appointment went ignored. Then on the day, a specific question about how the artist envisioned executing one particular element of my modest armband tat (dot outline? just white space? some shading?) was met not with answers but with eye rolling and "look, darling, I got this." Ugh. Sexist patronizing as a cherry on top. I wound up walking out rather than letting Vinny touch me. If I had gotten a tattoo that day, I would've hated it forever because of the horrible disrespectful energy in it. He did come after me to apologize, which I appreciate, but it does not change the fact that his behavior was over-the-top rude and unprofessional. The work seems to be all about him, not the client. Tattoo artists, here's a tip: if you are not into executing a particular design, at least be kind and brave enough to let your clients know early. Save everyone a lot of suffering. Don't make them wait two weeks for an appointment to be publicly humiliated. Like any service project, the creation of body art can be an act of divine service or it can be based in arrogant ego. Vinny's work may be technically good, but I do NOT recommend his shop unless you are an emotional masochist. read more

Very happy with my tattoo from Nate. Was my first time, and he was highly professional and kind, even taking the time to modify a custom design for me. Update: After healing, it was evident that my tattoo was unfortunately extremely crooked. This was a mistake on the part of the artist. Sad to see negative reviews here. Did a walk in with Sam yesterday. Needed a calf piece with a ton of solid black and line work. Guy took his time, was incredibly friendly and talkative. Dude obviously loves his job, and has been doing it for a long time. Most artists say "we can re-stick this as many times as you need" but kinda groan when you need to keep moving it around to get it right. Sam did not give off any kind of impatient vibe. he restuck the stencil like four/five times until it was perfect. Once it was, he tattooed quickly and professionally. It was done before I knew it and the black work is super solid/clean. He DID wear gloves... he WAS very sterile... he WAS completely sober (and honestly dude does not give me the vibe of a boozer) ... and he WAS a great representation of the establishment. I have zero complaints and give this place a 5/5 rating. I will def be back to sit with either Morgan or Sam. They both have curried my favor. Thanks gang. read more

My partner and I went here last month and both got tattooed by Vinnie. I can't say enough good things about this experience! This was my fourth tattoo, and never before has an artist put so much creativity, love, and genuine interest into any of my ink. Vinnie worked on me for hours, and I paid very little. Plus, it was such a blast! Very cool guy. He also fixed an old tattoo for like 20 extra bucks. It looked really bad before and now it's a work of art! Boyfriend's tattoo looks great too; it was his first. We both plan on returning here for more work; after this epic tattoo he gave me I have no need to go anywhere else! Go here if you want either- 1) A cheap tattoo that you chose from a book (basic design, really unoriginal) or 2) You want a really fucked up original piece. My experience: I went to Vinnie when he worked for Scarred for Life, and had some work done. They were basic letters, and everything went well. When I learned he moved to Claw and Talon, I was hoping to get more work done. In the meantime, I recommended him to a friend who wanted a small bird done. She was going in the day before me, so I went in with her. He was high as hell, and started working on her tattoo. I left for work, and when I got back, I saw how terrible of a job he did on her. The bird wasn't symmetrical, the feathers were messed up, and it all was at an angle. She was considering a cover up right after I confirmed that it looked bad (it was on her back, and our other friends were too nice to tell her how bad it looked, to not hurt her feelings). I canceled my appointment that night. How unprofessional it is to get high and put a permanent art piece on someone. Basically, don't go here. I think you can find some kitchen tattoo artists that have higher quality and professionalism than these guys. read more

Round 2: I love the allegations the tattoo artist or whomever profile he's writing under made it's hilarious. First of all if you're a tattoo artist you should be able to actually recreate the picture that was given to you to draw up and then follow through with that tattoo and not f*** it up. Mine was done horribly, the tattoo artist took several breaks where he smoked drugs and then came back to work without cleaning his hands are doing anything hygienic. He smelled bad probably from not showering for several days. I brought up the tattoo issue needing to be fixed a few months after it had healed and I had time to go in there not a year later which is made up bullshit. He declined to do any sort of touch up or to fix the f*****-up tattoo he gave me and told me to go somewhere else and pay money somewhere else I'm not looking for handouts nor do I need them I'm not some struggling artists working at some s*** show tattoo shop. I wouldn't recommend this place. I went in to get a tattoo fixed and none of the tattoo artists seemed to want to help me even though I was a paying customer. Just seemed very dirty and unsanitary. Didn't clean or shave my skin before getting it done. Didn't clean or cover my tattoo afterwards. I have many tattoos and it was just sloppy before and after treatment like I've never experienced. I really hope I don't get an infection due to the lack of sanitation. Also, my tattoo coming in clearly had issues which is why I came in to get it fixed and the guy who ended up tattooing me was like no tattoo is perfect. Ok no, first of all if it's going to be on my body the rest of my life it better be perfect and if I'm paying you to make it so don't tell someone that and give it your full effort. The only good thing about the experience was that I didn't get charged the full price because it was just a fix. Also he said the tattoo looked good from 5 feet away, like what the actual fuck. If a tattoo only looks good from 5 feet away then it's not a good fucking tattoo! Don't call yourself an artist dude. read more

Before getting something so permanent as a tattoo I generally do check out reviews here as well as other review sights. I found reviews for Claw and Talon other places, and after checking out the artist's online portfolios I decided to call and see what they said. My initial call was on the recent holiday. Vinny was kind enough to try and work me into his schedule but it didn't end up working out. Instead we made an appointment for a few days later. This was going to be my first tattoo and I was a little nervous. Upon arriving at the studio Vinny drew up my tattoo- a short phrase with sentimental meaning to me- and was very considerate of my input. We got it the right size and we were good to go. While he prepped his equipment we talked and he calmed my anxiety. I had been told by other artist that I had chosen the 'worst' spot to get a first tattoo on my upper side since ribs are a painful area. Vinny assured me it would be fine, and it was. He made me feel comfortable, and I love the way it turned out. Before leaving I was provided with after care information and told to get in contact with questions. I felt very secure in getting my first tattoo here. Everything was clean, sterile, and the price was very fair. Vinny was great and even offered advice on the second (larger) tattoo I've already been planning. Great experience. read more
