Situated in an early 19th century Philadelphia style house on the Zane Trace road. Decorated with lots of period style stuff. Lunch service was fine, but the food that came out was not what was advertised on the menu and there is a serious need for seasoning. I grew up German, third generation and am very familiar with the cuisine. That being said, we will most likely not be returning. The Der Meister ham sandwich is listed on the menu as a ham steak, rye, Swiss. What came was a very small portion, ( two thin slices of deli ham on bread smaller than the palm of my hand). The other meal was fish and chips...no salt, no seasoning and pollock with chips. 4.5 star reviews...it reminds me of Peach's in Crooksville. Beer was good and cold. read more

Actually rate Clay Haus 2 stars. Could be so much more! Unique (historic) setting. A bit noisy - as a result of mostly hard surfaces. Service was attentive. Salad was fresh/good. Same for dressings. Bread was fresh - but of the "Wonder Bread" variety. Served with real butter. Yes! Mac and cheese was a disappointment and not eaten. Over cooked pasta. Sauce lacked flavor. Shrimp (siracha) was small, mostly breading and sweet, not spicy... A bust. Prime rib was good, but not remarkable. A bit over done versus preferred medium rare. Baked potato not ideal. Small. Seemed like it had been held for a while. Slight bit of sour cream to go with. Salmon was good. Cooked nicely.Sauce not bad but also not remarkable. Meatloaf - not bad. Plate looked inviting. Not remarkable as it lacked good flavor. Pretty bland. Mashed potatoes and green beans were ok but lacked sufficient salt/seasoning. Enjoyed folks we were with. Not likely to return. Suggestion: Materially reduce menu offerings such that every dish CAN be made fresh and tasty. read more

The Clay Haus is a gem of a restaurant in Somerset. It is housed in an historic old building that dates back to the early 1800's and that retains the feel of an old historic tavern or stagecoach stop. The menu has a German theme to it but is not strictly German and offers a variety of entrees. The staff is extremely nice and very pleasant. They really make you feel welcome and "at home". As for the food -- in a word -- excellent. We were there with a party of 4 and we tried 4 different entrees. My wife had the Reuben -- really, really good corned beef and good German sauerkraut. I had the bratwurst which was served with sauerkraut and some really excellent hot German potato salad, One of our friends has the "chicken and noodles" which was one of their daily specials and it really looked and smelled delicious. Our other friend had the fish and chips which looked incredible. I think I'll have the fish and chips on my next visit. Aside from excellent food and excellent service, the prices at lunchtime were also very reasonable. If you in the area of Somerset, you owe it to yourself to try the Clay Haus. read more

The building is old and cool - I felt like we were in Paul Revere's neighborhood in Boston. The dining areas are, well, old. But old cool. Just don't expect fancy white linen tablecloths - it's old, cool, and a early 1800's little rustic. Service was attentive, very friendly, and excellent. The food... oh, my... the food is fantastic. Delicious. Wonderful. Filling. Hearty. Mostly German food, with some American food. Everything was cheap by Columbus prices. I had the chicken livers with house-made potato cakes and a salad. I asked the server "am I going to be happy with the chicken livers?", and he said "oh, yea, you'll be happy...!". I was. OMG - absolutely delicious and the best chicken livers I've ever had. My wife had a ribeye with a salad and baked potato. Her only mistake was ordering a boring baked potato instead of the spectacular potato cakes - she stole half of my potato cakes... The Patron Margarita was spot-on, and only $6.50. The Cherry Crumble pie was world class, and only $3.00. All in all, Clay Haus is awesome, inexpensive, wonderful, and a really cool place unlike any other restaurant in Central Ohio. One of the hidden Gems of Somerset!! Located right off the circle, Clay Haus is a quaint German style restaurant serving up seriously delicious food! The chicken tender basket was delightful. The perfect ratio of breading to chicken, cooked perfectly! The chicken was juicy and tender! The slaw was creamy and delicious as well. The chicken livers were some of the best that I have had. The flavor of the onions and apples give this dish lovely flavor and texture combinations! The liver was cooked perfectly! Love the concept of this antique roadhouse restaurant... pretty good food plus you can feel the energy of hospitality that's accumulated over the centuries. For Sunday brunch I skipped the fried chicken buffet and ordered the much-acclaimed Ruben sandwich. I was disappointed that the sandwich was so small and unforgettable. Paying $12+ for a wimpy sandwich is not a big deal, but the real concern is that Clay House is losing focus on serving surprisingly good food at a nice value price in Somerset. read more

My bride and I had dinner here tonight, 3 26 22 and I had the prime rib. It was excellent. The mashed potatoes with gravy was spectacular. The green beans were excellent. My bride had baked steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. She said it was the best. Bread was home made. The place decor takes one back to the golden days, yet modern and well decorated. Truly an excellent experience. Home style cooking in a colonial inn atmosphere. The liver and onions are a treat. Good soup and salad bar and a fabulous Sunday buffet with fried chicken, homemade noodles, real mashed potatoes, yummy gravy, and lots of other goodies to choose. The desserts are made from scratch using in season fruits...and the walnut pie is mouth watering good. Lots of other choices on the menu including prime rib on Friday nights. Wow. This little restaurant is a total GEM! Its located in. Historic building and there are antiques and old photographs all over the walls. It's out in the middle of no where. My coworkers and I were in the area and stumbled upon Clay Haus in Somerset. Wonderful food. Wonderful service. They have daily specials of items not on the menu. We were there for lunch on a weekday. The food was delicious! Very fresh. The service was friendly, helpful and courteous. I plan to bring my 86 year old mom here who has traveled to Germany (among many other places around the world). She is going to love it and you would too. This place is old fashioned home cooking meets German-American cuisine meets small-town USA. To look at the outside, you wouldn't know that culinary goodness awaits for you inside. Stepping into the old building, I questioned what I was about to do. Honestly, I wouldn't have been surprised if the whole place came crashing down around me--this building is OLD. That age, however, is what gives the Clay Haus part of its appeal. The menu is sparse, but the specials of the day make it well-rounded. Kids and adults alike will find something to eat. In my party, my 83-year-old Grandma ordered the liver and onions. (Yuck! But she said they were some of the best she'd ever had--so A+ I guess). My 63-year-old Mother ordered the meatloaf. Again, that's an ick from me, but she LOVED it. My almost 3-year-old daughter ordered the baked pasta and loved it. (They also have chicken strips and grilled cheese). I (38-year-old) ordered the fried chicken. YUM! I'll put their fried chicken up against any I've ever had and theirs will undoubtedly win--and I grew up with real Deep South cooking. The lunch prices are fair--about $10 per person, but be advised they are rather pricey for dinner. Also be aware that they close from 2pm to 4pm to switch from lunch to dinner, and their menu changes as well. Finally, the town of Somerset is quaint. What a fun and eclectic little restaurant! Clay Haus was originally built as a house in 1812, and is said to be haunted. The seating is in what was once a living room. The menu, very reasonably priced, has something for everyone, but as a vegetarian, it seemed to me, not so much. Our server was amazing and told me about all the menu choices that can be altered to a vegetarian or vegan recipe, and I chose the Reuben sandwich which substituted the meat for roasted beets. It was absolutely delicious! Our server was friendly, helpful and attentive and our drinks were refilled continuously. Very laid back and cozy little nook of a restuarant with a home cooked type menu. Relaxing atmosphere, it's like stepping back in time with its historic decor and stories to tell, as it is an old structure. It has also made it in a haunted Ohio book, so its entertaining as well as good food. Only drawback is it is a tad pricey but you get what you pay for and the food in my opinion is worth it, especially considering the portion size you get. read more

This place is super cute and quaint. The food was very good and the women who worked there were very nice. They told us the place was featured on Ghost Hunters at one time. The only downfall was the owner himself, who was not very friendly. They close between 2-4 everyday, and when we came at 1:30 he seemed irritated and made a point of telling us they close at 2:00. We were there a few minutes past just chatting with the server and he scolded her in front of us and made it clear he was not happy were were there. They were all there cleaning up and getting ready for dinner crowd so I'm not sure why he was so upset. It's a shame because the place and food were really good. read more

Stopped in at this little gem for lunch today. The Clay Haus has great food that reminds of you of being home. I walked in to The Clay Haus and took in the dark wood and was greeted warmly by the server on duty. I walked into the dining room, which was comprised of about 8 tables. The atmosphere was warm and comfortable. Today I ordered the smoked sausage lunch special. My lunch came with a side of green beans and mashed potatoes...can you say comfort food! It was so good. I also enjoyed the salad bar. The salad bar was simple, but clean and provided a good amount of options to build a nice appetizer salad. The Clay Haus is a simple, well-priced, clean restaurant with good service. I would certainly recommend it and hope to return soon to try the liver and onions or maybe the Monte Carlo sandwich read more

Not many have the privelege to spend time in Somerset, Ohio. Probably because there is not much to do there. I live in DC but if I am ever withing 100 miles of Somerset, I would drive the distance for another taste of the great offerings at Clay Haus. This is my third review today, so I am just going to break out into a top ten list, my favorite thoughts about Clay Haus: 1. Amazing food - I ordered seconds and thirds the food is so good and the menu has so many items you don't see on menus in the city 2. Generous portions 3. Ambiance. The place is stunning and charming. It is relaxing and at the same time breathtaking and exhilarating. 4.Winery - enough said 5. Winery - more needs to be said - the selection is great and the staff is very helpful/ 6. Waitstaff - courteous, thoughtful, and very friendly. 7. Sunday buffet - enough said 8. Wait! i want to say more about the buffet - great selection, fresh, tasty, clean! 9. Historic - you really feel that you are having an experience when you eat and drink here. 10. Comparison - its not like other places you go to eat. We initially were heading to the "other" restaurant across the square after a long day to load up on greasy bar food but the wait was 50 minutes. Instead, we decided to give the Clay Haus a go since it had equally good yelp reviews and offered more than average bar food. It was later on a Saturday and when we went in the dining room was empty; I was worried they weren't serving dinner. The staff had us head downstairs to the bar where all the other patrons were. The atmosphere was local bar friendly and our server was excellent. She provided good recommendations and was very attentive. Our food arrived quickly and was so delicious! There are several authentic German dishes and steaks, chicken, seafood and several sandwiches. They also have a wide variety of daily specials. We tried the German chicken - delicious, chicken in a bird's nest - my husband loved it, meatloaf - yum! Our sides were German potato salad served warm, green beans with bacon and mashed potatoes with gravy, all excellent. My son had a spaghetti kids meal and a side of fries which was plenty of food. We also tried the pretzel bites with a cheese dip that tasted like the inside of combos. I should also mention that the prices were very reasonable as well. We can't wait to go back. read more

Very nice restaurant! The decor was warm and cozy. I ordered the meatloaf, mashed potatoes/gravy and green beans. The food was delicious with decent portion size and very reasonably priced. Our waitress was very friendly and personable. She knew we were from out of town and even though it was closing time when we were finished and leaving, she took extra time to talk to us and tell us about the history of the building and restaurant/bar, and suggestions for nearby attractions. Great little place! We stop here based on Yelp reviews on our way through town. It's a very rustic looking eatery. Its small and intimate. My wife had the Monte Carlo sandwich with onion rings and I had the Rueben with German potato salad. Both sandwiches were pretty good. The service was good and prices were fair. Wife and I drove the 30 miles this evening to try out the Clay Haus restaurant after passing by it earlier this week and viewing the few reviews that had been made on Yelp - all very positive! We arrived at the early 1800's structure at it's 4:00 pm evening opening time and was immediately seated. It was very cold outside, but very comfortable inside. The facility is very historic, and is furnished very appropriate. Let's get down to the food! I had the 12 oz ribeye, German potato salad, and their bean soup and salad from the salad/soup bar. The wife had their version of a chicken pot pie, and the bean soup and salad. We split a cream puff for desert and took another one home for later. The food was GREAT! Maybe the best all round meal we've had since moving to Ohio from Louisiana nearly 2 1/2 years ago. The food gets a 5 rating from both of us! Not one item rated less then a solid 5 from either of us! What great food and very reasonably priced! The waiter was great and spent adequate time with us to give us first time experience information about the food and facility. The service gets a 5 rating as well. The food a 5, the facility a 5, the staff a 5 and the value a solid 5 equates to a great dining experience and a deserving 5 rating. When will we go back to the Clay Haus? The next time we want another special dining experience. I can't wait! UPDATE: Stopped in for the Sunday buffet yesterday and it was great!
