The food here was absolutely AMAZING! The service and environment are so well thought out and cozy. We picked the buffet and ate way too much. They have a great selection of beer! We were able to buy a jar of horseradish to take back home to TX. We bought a vanilla cream puff and a chocolate one. After coming out of our food coma we had the vanilla puff and it was great. Can't say the best I've ever had but it was good. I'm hoping the chocolate is better. Both were baked too long imo. Our waitress was so beautiful. While on a road trip to Colorado, my wife and I made sure to stop in the historic German Village area of Columbus, Ohio. We first visited the information center where they showed a short video about how the German settlers came to Columbus. Before leaving, we asked where we should eat for a true German experience. The person there immediately recommended Schmidt's Sausage Haus, saying there were other good places, but Schmidt's was the place for authentic German food. We walked over and were seated right away. Our server greeted us and returned quickly to take our drink order. We both had iced tea. He also told us about the buffet and suggested we take a look before ordering. We checked it out, but it just didn't appeal to us that evening, so we ordered from the menu instead. My wife ordered the potato soup, and I ordered the Old World Sausage Sampler: "A combination of four sausages from famous recipes of the J. Fred Schmidt Packing Company served over hot kraut und pork with German potato salad, chunky applesauce, und split top bun." When the food arrived, it looked amazing. I honestly don't remember exactly which four sausages they were, but every one of them was excellent. The sauerkraut had great flavor, and the warm German potato salad was outstanding. The applesauce was good too, although I personally prefer smooth over chunky. I actually mixed some of the applesauce with the sauerkraut and really enjoyed that combination. For dessert, we took a couple items to go. My wife had the cream cheese tort with cherry topping, and I had the famous cream puff. The tort was okay, but the crust wasn't my favorite and the cream cheese filling was just average to me. The cream puff was definitely better. The shell was perfectly done and the filling was good, although I was hoping for a little more rich vanilla custard flavor. I think a chocolate topping would have made it even better. Later I found out they also offer a chocolate version, but our server never mentioned that option. Our server was very friendly throughout the meal. The only small thing that became a little repetitive was him saying "All right, all right, all right" after every item we ordered. Overall though, we really enjoyed our experience and were glad we stopped. While sitting in the waiting area I spoke with several people that highly recommended the buffet. You must know I am not a buffet fan, but had I tried it. Very impressive and the food was very good. I will say if in the area again I may just try off the menu as I ate way too much food. Simeon my waiter was truly a rockstar. My cup never went empty and he made the meal better just by helping out. This place is a Columbus institution, or so I am told. Deep into German Village, if there can really be such a thing. Small parking lot, minimal street parking. Go early or late to avoid parking hell. The building is clearly part of the charm. Old brick and wood, updated with more modern materials and spaces as time marched on. The staff are friendly, efficient, and BUSY. Most dressed in "authentic" German attire. The tables are too close together and the air alternates between the smell of sausage and sweat. The food here, as most restaurants, is the main attraction. Generous portions, standard German fare. Nothing spectacular, nothing bad. Just solid decent food at a slightly higher than decent prices. I suspect I gave this a 4 star review because I suffered from anticipointment. It was good, very good, but not as good as I expected. As a Cincinnati resident I am very familiar with German food and somehow expected to be WOWed. I wasn't. The cream puff was good. Not the epitome of dessert perfection. But good. Having family members who have lived in Germany and are fluent in German, this was a spot we were pumped to try. We got quite a few dishes and over all everything was really good. The Weinershnitzel was a bit dry and chewy but everything else was really good. We were told to definitely try the cream puffs so of course we did, and the were yummy. I've been visiting Schmidt's while in town for business since 1996 and I can't believe that I haven't written a review yet. So here goes. I've done sausage plates, buffet nights and schnitzels, but my favorite plate is a perfectly tender sauerbraten with ginger snap sauce over spaetzle and red cabbage. And you can't go wrong with some potato pancakes on the side. There will be a wait for a table, but that's why there is a bar with German beers. Had dinner here last week with my coworkers (a group of 4) and was quoted a 20-minute wait on a Wed evening, which was fine as we got to explore the other shops in the adorable German Village, unique gifts and chocolates galore. Our table was actually ready in less than 10 minutes, and we were given options of ordering off the menu or taking advantage of their buffet. We decided on dishes off the menu, my colleagues getting the chicken schnitzel (these were loaded with cheese), and for myself the hunter schnitzel with my choice of sides being german potato salad and green beans & spatzle (which had more green beans than spatzle in the mix). These dishes came with generous portions, the breaded pork loin particularly tasty and filling. I wasn't too big a fan of the tangy vinegary flavor in the potato salad, but I enjoyed my meal nonetheless. We couldn't leave without taking some dessert to go. I selected the peanut butter and fudge cream puff, a large pastry which just called to me from the display case in the front of the restaurant. It wasn't outstanding, but it was satisfying enough. My coworkers who got the plain cream puffs were a bit disappointed, so I'm glad I went with the chocolate covered pastry. There was also live music with a duo of musicians dressed in german attire playing the tuba and accordian inside the restaurant. This added a nice touch to the lively atmosphere. The atmosphere is kind of cool with the traditional German look but extremely cramped and loud. The dessert options are top notch and I loved the German chocolate cake. I wasn't a fan of the the German dishes finding them to be dry and kind of flavorless but to be fair I feel like Schmidt's is more for the sausages which I would say are always yummy. They also complement the brat. I've only eaten at the food truck but they are always quick, and friendly service. My ONLY issue is that sometimes the food truck doesn't show up where it's supposed to be and it's disappointing if I drive to location hoping to see them and they aren't there :/ They don't always update the facebook page when a truck changes locations or cancels which can be frustrating. Located in German Village, this restaurant is older than whatever your age is by a lot. By multiples of your age. By American standards, this restaurant is ridiculously old. Parking in this neighborhood s ridiculous so be very grateful they have their own designated parking lot out back. There are three or four smallish dining rooms and the decor is understated and charming. The German beer on draft is great and if you aren't getting draft German beer here, we can't be friends and you're doing it wrong. The sausages are very good. The sauerkraut is also good and the German potato salad is EXCELLENT. The potato pancakes are also very good. Although our dinners stuffed us, we had to try one of the famous cream puffs. They make them with a number of different fillings. We tried one with a peanut butter filling with chocolate on top. It was very good as far as cream puffs go but I probably would not get it again. One cream puff is large and definitely can be shared. Our server was right on top of things. There were some difficult customers with young children running around near us (please parents, don't let your kids run around in restaurants) and the other servers showed great patience. There is a lot more on the menu I wanted to try but there is only so much heavy German food and beer one can eat at a sitting. We left very satisfied. read more

Bland and adds absolutely nothing to the dish. I'd sub it for red skin mash potatoes. Highly recommend. Veal schnitzel was alright. I'm not a big veal fan so don't take this with major authority. The mushroom gravy is ok, but doesn't give any exciting level to the dish. The same beet salad is paired with the crispy well salted schnitzel. The veal had a typical veal flavor, but simply isn't for me. I'd recommend subbing the spatzle. I would recommend if you're a fan of veal. Smoked Honey turkey Ruben was good. The turkey had a prominent smoked honey flavor and was tender and far from dry. The German mustard of course was fantastic and the pretzel bun subbed for the rye was a great idea from our waitress. The coleslaw on top was very good and added levels to the sandwich. I added excess beer cheese to it and it was amazing. I'd recommend. Pretzel nuggets were great. Soft well salted pretzel bites with honestly the best honey mustard and beer cheese I've ever had. The beer cheese was thick, creamy, and just a phenomenal flavor. I'm not the biggest fan of honey mustard, but this one was very good. I will say the beet cheese made the dish. I'd recommend. Sauerkraut-bratwurst balls were delicious. Creamy, perfectly fried, packed with flavor. These were amazing. The sauerkraut added a perfect citrus to the flavorful sausage. Paired with a creamy mustard sauce. This truly was a fantastic dish. I'd highly recommend. Coconut cream pie was ok. As a custard pie it was delicious. As a coconut cream pie it was far from acceptable. There was absolutely no coconut flavor. I wouldn't recommend. Toffee cream puff was great. An amazing pastry shell with an excellent toffee cream filling. This was very good and one of the better cream puff variations I've had. I'd highly recommend. Banana cream pie was perfect. This was the best banana cream pie I've ever had. The custard whip cream mix was amazing. The banana slices on the bottom were fresh and the banana flavor strong. The crust was ok, but there isn't much of it so it doesn't affect it in my eyes. This was amazing. I'd insist on this order. read more

Well, I guess we don't follow the opinions of the other visitors. We came in on a weeknight for dinner. The entire German Village area is just beautiful and Schmidt's is kind of a trap as it is the only restaurant sitting at the end of the historic cobblestone street. It is old world traditional inside with big pictures of the original family members to greet you. We were whisked to a very cozy little side booth in the back room where the buffet set up resides. And our server very much looking the German part took our orders, as we opted for the regular dinners over the buffet. Everything here is tight and loud. As we waited for our dinners to come out, our server kindly brought us a bowl with some of their sample sausages to try. These were just ok, waay too much salt for our taste. Cup of soup of the day - was actually a bowl of chili. The Hunter schnitzel and the Haus sauerbraten also were very salty and just not well prepared. All in all, not a great meal for us. The spot for German food! After doing some Columbus research my fiancé and I decided we had to check out Schmidt's. Let me give you some pro tips if you decide to stop. This place is always busy- especially on a weekend. Yelp has a way to join a waitlist and this is a smart move. We joined to list and checked in once we got to the restaurant. (Parking can be difficult. We were lucky to find one in the lot). The neighborhood is beautiful! We walked around for a while looking for a bar- bad news is there wasn't one close. Once we got into the restaurant service was super fast. Our waitress was very nice. German beers on tap- and they are big! I ordered the chicken snitzel with the sauce on the side. We started the meal with cups of tasty potato soup. My husband enjoyed the German imported beer (Warsteiner Dunkel) with Oma's Meatloaf. I tried their Old World Sausage Platter and a glass of Riesling. There were other traditional German favorites on the menu including schnitzel and sauerbraten. We were too full for dessert but there were many enticing homemade selections. Nestled in the middle of this beautiful German area is Schmidt's Sausage Haus. This multi generational institution is caring on the tradition of German cuisine.
