You hear people talk about this place so much that eventually you start wondering: Is Schmidt's really that damn good, or has the hype just taken on a life of its own? Well, I finally pulled up to find out for myself. And yep... BELIEVE THE HYPE. First thing you need to know before walking into Schmidt's: COME HUNGRY! Excellent authentic German food with reasonable prices with friendly and straight-forward waitstaff. Chicago does not have a ton of places with currywurst so when I saw this on the menu, I immediately bookmarked it and made it a priority to check off. Our family of four had dinner on a Sunday at 5 pm. It was an early dinner time but there were already several tables dining in. We were immediately seated and tried the sausage and white bean soup, currywurst with fries, wiener schnitzel, and giant chocolate cream puff. Everything was delicious and brought back fond memories of my past business trips to Germany. My one complaint is that the giant cream puff could have been fluffier but the chocolate cream was incredibly light and smooth. read more

Myself and a coworker made a plan to come here, we walked around German Village beforehand, and then made our way here before it got too busy. We approached the hostess stand, she smiled and showed us a table for two next to the window. I ordered a Hefeweizen, which turned up quickly; it was cold and refreshing as I perused the menu. I was hungry, so we ordered a lot- Pretzel Bites, Bratwurst and Jagerschnitzel. The food was incredibly good, our server friendly and attentive. An iconic location in right in the heart of the German Village of Columbus, OH. It's a must do on your list when you visit Columbus. We tried the beer & the Old World Sausage Sampler. The service was amazing; the team did a great job. The ambiance just worked! As a veteran of Bavarian style German restaurants, this place was spot on. The curry wurst was the superstar in my opinion, followed by the smashed potato and the warm sauerkraut. I didn't particularly like their sausages, and the potato salad wasn't what I was expecting. So while in town you have to eat right? Well I came in because I have read lots of good things about Schmidt's so I had to try. While sitting in the waiting area I spoke with several people that highly recommended the buffet. You must know I am not a buffet fan, but had I tried it. Very impressive and the food was very good. I will say if in the area again I may just try off the menu as I ate way too much food. Simeon my waiter was truly a rockstar. My cup never went empty and he made the meal better just by helping out. If you see him working I am sure he will impress you with his work ethic and friendly demeanor. I highly recommend stopping in for some food. Parking is limited so keep that in mind. read more

We always go for the lunch buffet and share a cream puff pastry afterwards($5-half price if you get the buffet I believe). While on a road trip to Colorado, my wife and I made sure to stop in the historic German Village area of Columbus, Ohio. We first visited the information center where they showed a short video about how the German settlers came to Columbus. Before leaving, we asked where we should eat for a true German experience. The person there immediately recommended Schmidt's Sausage Haus, saying there were other good places, but Schmidt's was the place for authentic German food. We walked over and were seated right away. Our server greeted us and returned quickly to take our drink order. We both had iced tea. He also told us about the buffet and suggested we take a look before ordering. We checked it out, but it just didn't appeal to us that evening, so we ordered from the menu instead. My wife ordered the potato soup, and I ordered the Old World Sausage Sampler: "A combination of four sausages from famous recipes of the J. Fred Schmidt Packing Company served over hot kraut und pork with German potato salad, chunky applesauce, und split top bun." When the food arrived, it looked amazing. I honestly don't remember exactly which four sausages they were, but every one of them was excellent. The sauerkraut had great flavor, and the warm German potato salad was outstanding. The applesauce was good too, although I personally prefer smooth over chunky. I actually mixed some of the applesauce with the sauerkraut and really enjoyed that combination. For dessert, we took a couple items to go. My wife had the cream cheese tort with cherry topping, and I had the famous cream puff. The tort was okay, but the crust wasn't my favorite and the cream cheese filling was just average to me. The cream puff was definitely better. The shell was perfectly done and the filling was good, although I was hoping for a little more rich vanilla custard flavor. I think a chocolate topping would have made it even better. Later I found out they also offer a chocolate version, but our server never mentioned that option. Our server was very friendly throughout the meal. The only small thing that became a little repetitive was him saying "All right, all right, all right" after every item we ordered. Overall though, we really enjoyed our experience and were glad we stopped. The sausage and German potato salad were especially memorable, and I'm honestly considering ordering some of their sausage and potato salad shipped to us this summer. read more

I ordered a frankfurter platter at the fair while volunteering for the day. The sauerkraut was my favorite part. I love the texture of the potato salad, but my appetite always wants mashed potatoes with sauerkraut! I've only been here twice, and wow it's a great experience. The food is authentic and prepared expertly. I'm without question a schnitzel guy, and while everyone raves about their amazing sausages (they are fantastic) for me it's all about the schnitzel. My husband and I brought our 2 kids (3 and 1 years old) to Schmidt's and loved it. They had a buffet which was perfect for me to try all the different bratwursts. My 1 year old was able to eat at the buffet for free and loved everything that she tried. My 3 year old had a hotdog and waffle fries. The sizing was pretty big but it was so yummy that he ate every bite. My husband got the Bahama Mama and loved that too. For dessert we have one of the peanut butter/ chocolate cream puffs, and it was so hard for us to not get a second one because it was GOOD (and I'm not even a huge chocolate person). They said they don't have a buffet every night, so if you're looking to try a few different things on their menu, I would definitely suggest calling ahead to make sure they have a buffet because it was well worth it. read more

The staff are friendly, efficient, and BUSY. Most dressed in "authentic" German attire. The tables are too close together and the air alternates between the smell of sausage and sweat. The food here, as most restaurants, is the main attraction. Generous portions, standard German fare. Nothing spectacular, nothing bad. Just solid decent food at a slightly higher than decent prices. I suspect I gave this a 4 star review because I suffered from anticipointment. It was good, very good, but not as good as I expected. As a Cincinnati resident I am very familiar with German food and somehow expected to be WOWed. I wasn't. The cream puff was good. Not the epitome of dessert perfection. But good. Had dinner here last week with my coworkers (a group of 4) and was quoted a 20-minute wait on a Wed evening, which was fine as we got to explore the other shops in the adorable German Village, unique gifts and chocolates galore. I wasn't too big a fan of the tangy vinegary flavor in the potato salad, but I enjoyed my meal nonetheless. We couldn't leave without taking some dessert to go. I selected the peanut butter and fudge cream puff, a large pastry which just called to me from the display case in the front of the restaurant. It wasn't outstanding, but it was satisfying enough. My coworkers who got the plain cream puffs were a bit disappointed, so I'm glad I went with the chocolate covered pastry. I've been visiting Schmidt's while in town for business since 1996 and I can't believe that I haven't written a review yet. So here goes. I've done sausage plates, buffet nights and schnitzels, but my favorite plate is a perfectly tender sauerbraten with ginger snap sauce over spaetzle and red cabbage. This place is the best German food Ive had in the area. The meat has the perfect char on it, and the potato salad and cabbage are cooked perfectly are very well seasoned. They also complement the brat. I've only eaten at the food truck but they are always quick, and friendly service. My ONLY issue is that sometimes the food truck doesn't show up where it's supposed to be and it's disappointing if I drive to location hoping to see them and they aren't there :/ They don't always update the facebook page when a truck changes locations or cancels which can be frustrating.
