I recently had my water service line replaced from the meter to my house. During the project, David discovered that the boring contractor hadn't installed the new line deep enough to meet code. It would have been easy to work around it, trench through my landscaping, or simply let it go--but instead, he advocated for me. He stood his ground, insisted the boring company come back and do the job correctly, and ultimately saved me from ending up with a substandard installation. That decision cost him an entire day's work while everyone waited for the boring company to return, but he still put doing the job right ahead of simply getting paid and moving on. To top it off, when the project was finished, his final invoice came in below the high end of the estimate he had originally given me. In a world where it's common to brace yourself for surprise costs, that was a refreshing experience. We aren't even making a profit on this property, but more importantly, that shouldn't be the determining factor. If a company chooses to offer a military discount as a way of recognizing someone's service, then that recognition shouldn't change based on whether the customer owns an investment property. They didn't cover anything and had concrete dust flying through the house. She is 83 with breathing ailments but that doesn't seem to matter. Then they dug her yard up. Ok, they had to get under the foundation. Understandable. They fix the pipe and present her with a bill of over $2,700. Why? Because the owner of the company was there when the insurance adjuster was there and heard how much she was getting. They handed her the bill and left with her yard still dug up, concrete dust everywhere and her carpet not replaced. When she called about the carpet the owner told her they were not responsible for that and she would have to hire someone else to reinstall it. So she asks about her yard. The owner tells her he will get someone over to fill in the holes in a day or two. Now, mind you, she has spent a small fortune on her yard and is very picky since it looks like a golf course. A few days go by and no crew. She calls again. The owner tells her he's out of town but his crew won't fix the yard because they are not landscapers. So again, she is going to have to hire someone else to fix her yard. Not 10 minutes after the owner tells her he is put of town and won't help her he is at her front door demanding payment. He ended up taking her entire insurance settlement and left her to pay out of pocket for the carpet, the cleaning and the yard they screwed up. The entire ordeal ended up costing her over $4,000 when the original estimate was promised at $700 with everything being put back like they found it. I requested assistance in troubleshooting a flame loss code on a tankless water heater. It was…read moreapparent pretty early that I knew more about these units than the employees who came out. One was in training and spent a majority of his time sitting outside on his phone. That aside, the primary tech stated they rarely work on these and I had suggested a few things to look for which he agreed was a good idea - almost as he was remembering some distant training he had. He used a service valve that filled the condensation pipe with water which presented a leak within the wall coming out under the drywall. Instead of connecting a hose or something to drain into a bucket he kept using it and causing more water to fill inside the wall. Eventually they had to call the manufacturer for support and they required a manometer to successfully troubleshoot, which the tech proceeded to call a "worthless piece of shit" and hung up because they were not equipped with these tools. They had to come back the next day after acquiring the tools which were ~$100. They proceeded to confirm the heat exchanger and gas valve needed replaced under warranty. The parts were sent to D&H directly while I awaited the quote... $2800 in labor to replace these parts. This was egregious and downright unacceptable. I refused the estimate and requested to pickup the parts myself which they would not provide me as the home owner. The option was to send them back to the manufacturer and I would have to request another warranty replacement. This meant a delay of over a week to send back and honestly felt like a hostage/punishment for refusing their estimate, call out another company, request the parts again and have them replaced. The manufacturer was very helpful in facilitating this but with numerous calls and emails by me to both in order to resolve this made this experience much worse than it had to be. Ultimately, went with McConnell plumbing which replaced the parts and repaired the leaking pipe for $650. They were incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and went above and beyond to provide a great experience. I won't ever to business with D&H after this and will ensure to tell friends and family who ask for recommendations to not to business with them either.
