The meat here was really good and so was the soup. I would definitely get just the Mala beef again by itself with the white rice, and I would want to try the fried rice next time. I wasn't a fan of the flat noodles because the veggies just felt a bit lackluster, and the overall flavor wasn't great. Not sure how the Singapore rice noodles tasted, but I think I'd stick to the meat dishes because that was really tender and delicious. The service was good though as our waiter was nice, and we went when there wasn't anyone else, so we got our food within 5 minutes. Rewriting the review since I was very agitated at the time of publishing So facts were that I was the only diner, late afternoon One lone diner left soon after I sat I noticed my dish was taking longer than normal but i was happy eating the crispy wontons and my delicious egg drop soup So when the guy brings my dish, i see his thumb inside my rice due to the way he is holding it but i stayed silent I started eating my dish and noticed a thick reddish oil ring all around the sauce This has happened once before and the girl waitress got me a new dish This time, in addition, the sauce was also watery and soupy. I was waiting for the guy to come but that didn't happen so I got up looking for the waiter and the cook that had been resting in the section behind me got up to call the guy. Clear Lake Hunan Restaurant is packed in a business/shopping strip, but parking is not a problem. From the outside, you'd think this place was a hole-in-the-wall, but Hunan is pretty classy inside. The staff are hospitable. They have a vast menu selection with varying prices. However, when I first arrived, I found some hair on the serving plate off my soup. YUCK! Our server took it back, but didn't apologize. I was still charged with that exact soup I originally ordered! Outrageous! You would think after a deplorable incident like that, they would take that off my order as compensation, but NO! I'm not sure if I'll come back here or not. read more

3/10 star This place was the crown jewel of Chinese restaurants in the area. It seems that since the days when it was located in the Fairway Plaza shopping center, it's not been the same. I haven't had it in 6 months and then, it was tasty. On this day, the quality sealed it's fate for us. Pork Egg Roll - Tiny and soggy (as compared to their standard) Jalapeno Chicken - First Time trying this here. Chicken pieces were extremely tough and inedible and the veggies were overcooked. Honey Shrimp - First Time trying this. Large shrimp, but the batter was waaay too thick and had a weird texture and honey flavor. Combo Fried Rice - Quality and taste are not the same. it's as if this is not the same owner and recipes of times past. I debated whether I should have patronized, Panda Express as with being a national chain, the quality standards are high. Also, the tracking app doesn't work as my food was waiting on my porch 15 minutes past the estimated delivery time and no one rang the door bell. This place is located in a strip mall and is roomy and relatively clean. We visited here on a Saturday afternoon shortly after the lunch hour and were seated next to a table stacked with rolled napkins, sauces, etc. It was odd considering that there was only one other seated table in the joint. I believe there were two people working the restaurant -- the dude in the kitchen and the lady working the front. She was polite but her service was seriously lacking. First, my bottle of Tsing Tao came with a cold mug. That's great, except the bottle wasn't opened. Thankfully, my wife has a contraption on her keychain to open bottles. She brought the second bottle sealed as well. When we asked her to open the bottle, she looked dumbfounded. Polite ... but confused. The hot & sour soup here contains a bevy of ingredients compared with other Chinese joints. That said, mine was on the sweet side, and I had to add chile peppers and a lot of soy sauce. Additionally, it was served lukewarm. (The server put it in the microwave for me.) Egg rolls were served similarly lukewarm and stale. The server acknowledged that they had been under a lamp for a while. Per our request, they dropped a couple more and brought them out hot. While the egg rolls are decent, they definitely aren't rolled in-house. I would not order them again, as they taste similar to the egg rolls in the grocer's freezer section. I ordered beef & snow peas as an entree and was told that the place was out of snow peas. It happens, but it certainly didn't help an already disappointing situation. Instead, I ordered the appetizer salt & pepper calamari and some eggplant in garlic sauce. -- both were delicious. The calamari was fried in a batter (versus the breaded stuff in most other restaurants), while the eggplant was nicely cooked in a sweet-hot garlic sauce. My wife had egg foo yung. It was the first time she'd ordered it in years. Though my sample bite was good, she wasn't overly impressed. While the place was clean, thin Cheap plastic table cloths on the table. We were a party of four adults. We split the check and told the other couple we would pick up the tip. We checked out first then the other couple checked out and did not tip. The owner then laughed and said you're cheap. That was not only rude but very uncalled for. This has been a family favorite my entire life. Food has always great and consistent. Seems to be family owned but they hire the local kids too. I've been here hundreds of times both to carry out and dine in. Have never had a meal I didn't like. Now my kids are grown up and they enjoy it just like I did growing up. Service is always stellar. It's a place you can dine in formally with a date or your in-laws or just come thru with friends casually. Wanted to like this place, but to be honest it's just your average American-Chinese food. Got a few different dishes labeled as spicy (Sichuan bean curd, which I think is their take on ma-po tofu, and Kung pao chicken) and neither of them had much spice or flavor. We also ordered shrimp egg fo young but they got our order wrong and we ended up with some sort of noodle soup instead. Today I had a strong desire for fried rice, so I made my stop. I walked in 11 minutes after they opened (they open at 11a) and sat down immediately. Within a minute my order was taken. Delicious Peking Duck. So very much appreciate them accommodating us since we'd forgotten to order ahead. Sooo much food! Choice of steamed buns or pancakes. We prefer buns. Julienned spring onions and the carved duck skin really made each bite special! A great surprise was the Peking Duck soup, with broth made from the duck bones rendered from carving. Swimming in the rich broth was ample tofu and cabbage. It's just the two of us so, after eating our fill, we have takeaway for days. Just another reason to return soon to Clear Lake Hunan. We have been ordering steadily from this restaurant since my original review and today was the first time we had any sort of issue, in that we were missing a sauce. They remedied it in less than 15 minutes. Food was awesome as it has been. We got a take out menu in the mail that looked suspiciously like the menu from our favorite that had recently closed. I think fast food that gets the job done and is in some weird way, oddly satisfying but keeps me wanting more an hour later. While being Chinese take-out (and an attractive sit-down restaurant on the inside), Clear Lake Hunan not only got the job done, but amazed me as well. My expectations weren't high. I just wanted some food delivered to my hotel room after a long day of work. It's been a while since I ordered, so I can't quite recall the names of what I had, but I can definitely recall the flavors. The spare ribs were delicious. Not too saucy, not too dry, and cooked all the way through. The fat was actually crispy! That never happens with ribs from a take-out place. The fried chicken nuggets with red peppers? I ordered that at least two times. Never had a bad meal and everything was truly on point. The staff was friendly and kept the place looking nice and clean. We could heard they talking and listening spanish music out loud at the kitchen from our table. My kids also thought could be better. Too many sauce and spices on all dishes. Food The food was average for Chinese. I had the Honey Chicken off of the Lunch Specials, which came with a wonton soup, fried rice, and an egg roll. The honey chicken is chicken white meat seared in honey sauce. The honey sauce was a bit too sweet, thick, and sugary. The chicken itself seemed like it was just deep fried and seemed like they were just frozen buffet chicken tenders, nothing too special. The fried rice was pretty delectable, but a little plain from what you would usually find in a Chinese restaurant. The soup along with the egg roll was very nectarous. The soup came with crispy wonton chips, which went along with the soup very well. Service The service was efficient and was quick to get anything that was needed. But they also serve more "traditional" dishes that come chock full of veggies (win!)~ :D I like how they cater towards your needs-- we asked for less salt in all out dishes, so my salt-phobian Asian parents could eat take out without complaining about how salty restaurant food is after every bite~ The dishes don't have that heavy goopy sauce that they seem to put in every dish either ^^ The taste is okay, nothing anything out of this world, but the prices aren't expensive and depending on what you order, can make a healthy choice when you don't have time to make dinner~ Seems like a lot of Clear Lake families order take out or delivery from here :) Take out orders are safely packed in sturdy containers, so you don't have to worry about sauce leaking out from styrofoam. My wife has the Shrimp & Mixed Vegetables or Chicken & Mixed Vegetables. I don't recommend the sweet & sour pork. We shared it once and it was a 2 star dish. They seem too under-staffed, so service is often slow. Another negative, they save money on heating & AC. It's too warm in the summer and too cold in the winter. My wife is not a fan, so I don't go as often as I'd like. If I can twist her arm I'd like to try their Peking Duck some night. I was down in clear lake running errands with the gf and we were in a rush so opted for chinese take-out. The decision came after seeing quiznos or this place. It was mid afternoon but we still qualified for their lunch specials. The prices were fair like 7 bucks for a combo with soup, egg roll, 2 scoops of rice and an entree. I had the general tso's chicken and my gf had the chicken with mixed vegetables. Both dishes were edible, nothing spectacular. I did however, enjoy my egg drop soup which had corn? in it. As far as the interior, this place has a very chic look to it. For strip center chinese food, it looks like they put some money into it. One of my favorite Chinese restaurants! I try to come here whenever I'm in the Clear Lake area. They are located in the Randall's parking lot and have 2 entrances - one take out and one dine in. Don't worry it doesn't really matter which one you go in through. For the most part I've always just gotten take out from here but they do have a nice dining room. Food recommendations include the chicken and sweet corn soup, pork egg rolls, pork dumplings, and beef with broccoli. They have a lot of combo specials and just about any type of traditional Chinese food here. They also have a bar and serve a full bar menu. Their prices are a little high but it is hard to find any cheap Chinese food places in the clear lake area vs the rest of Houston! read more
