The Mongolian Beef was perfect amount of spice, with amazing onions and peppers. The surprise was the noodles on the bottom ! Yumm The chicken fried rice great, love bean spouts ! Monday's aren't crowded or at least it wasn't this particular Monday. That was a plus for me as our food came out quickly. Appetizer and meal all at once. Our waitress Ashley was amazing! Her energy alone made the visit very enjoyable. She recommended dishes that are purchased the most. She kept our drinks topped off without waiting or looking for her. That's always great! She checked on us often so there was never a time that we were waiting or looking for her. Too bad they don't offer to go cups! But nonetheless the experience there was amazing! This is Texas City's O.G. Chinese restaurant, and it pains me to say that it's not the Fortune that I used to know and love. I can recall telling anyone who would listen that the place was a must-try because of its cheap prices and generous portions. Unfortunately, those two things are a part of the past. I came here for dinner last night in hopes of getting reacquainted with my old friend, the lemon chicken combination platter. Unfortunately, the dish I swore my life on and I grew apart. For one, it wasn't around $8 but $11. I wouldn't have minded the price hike if it were still delicious and plentiful. For two, the chicken lost the juicy flavor that once had me begging for more. And because of that, I wasn't feeling how there was more of the entrée as opposed to the fried rice. And speaking of the fried rice, I used to crave it a lot. Fortune is a gem in Texas City. The ambiance is enhanced by an "old fashioned" Chinese restaurant-style charm boasting water features, clunky assian furniture that an elegance making the place inviting and truly capturing the Asian style. From appetizers to entrees to drinks, everything that comes out of the kitchen is top quality, delicious and often different from other establishments. Being a sushi-lover, I frequently order sushi and it is the highest quality available and perfect everytime. The hot entrees are out of this world - simply delicious and generous and leave me wanting to come back soon to try something new. In fact, the food is so delicious that I always over-order to assure plenty of leftovers, because I know I will be craving more later or the next day. Warmed up, the leftovers are as delicious as they were when freshly cooked. The staff are wonderful - polite, cheerful, helpful and very accomodating. They can answer questions about the menu, but don't hesitate to go for more information if they can't adequately answer your questions. Overall, they are simply THE BEST and never disappoint. We actually ate at the restaurant and we're the only eat In patrons there. It's very nice and clean inside, service was very good and food was excellent! Not sure why no other diners. However, they do an exceptional level of takeout. Very busy and obviously convenient . We definitely plan to visit again. There is no Buffet to be had here like any common Chinese restaurant, it is menu only. We shrugged our shoulders, settled in here and ordered. I ordered off of the lunch column which included a choice of three different suits, sweet and sour, wonton or egg drop. This soup didn't even seem to be on par with Buffet quality, take that as an oxymoron. It was kind of on the Bland side, by the way I got the sweet and sour soup. Next Wednesday fried rice, again almost Buffet quality. The spicy shrimp that I had was pretty plentiful for $7 although it did seem to have about a pound of onions to accompany it. In short, this is probably the same texture and preparation of food that you can get at any Buffet, you are just getting less here. The service was very good however, the Asian guy took care of us very well for a table of four and other satellite tables around us. I scanned the prices on the menu and noticed that pretty much very cheap. D fried rice list that I viewed had them going at $6.50 per plate which is good compared to $8 or $9 at most places. Do not order through Uber Eats because they will not give you the combination plates. Instead they try to justify saying it was the driver not them but their staff told me they only give the entre for the delivery services. Everything was soggy in the containers. Came here for a to-go order with 2 of my coworkers. The new management is apparently a stickler on the wonton chips and making sure each customer is charged 50 cents for them, for to-go orders. I believe you still get them free with your lunch when you dine-in. I ordered the pepper steak, extra spicy with wonton soup. Wonton Soup - comes in a little Styrofoam cup, broth is bland and terrible, wonton was ok. Pepper steak - this dish was average at best. some of the meat pieces were more chewy than others, they actually put some additional crushed red pepper in it to attempt to make it spicier, unlike other Chinese places which simply give you another whole red pepper. Fried shrimp was ok, but pretty plain with just small chopped carrots. I think I will try the other Chinese restaurant behind Wendy's next time, hoping to have better luck! read more

My first visit here was at its first location near Kroger when I was in high school. That was back in the early 90's. They would later relocate down Palmer Highway and continue providing good Chinese to the area. Over the last 10 years the place has gone from wonderful to ok. They had some financial issues a few years back and have since reopened but unfortunately this place is hit or miss. I have not lived in the area for over 10 years but always visit for old times sake. My family who live in the area come here because the prices are crazy affordable and portions and huge. Maybe if they can increase price or serve smaller portions the food the overall quality can be better. read more

I have since moved five hours away from the city but I ALWAYS find time to stop at Fortune to get soup and chicken fried rice whenever I visit. Had absolutely no flavor at all and the fried wonton strips that were served with it were completely stale! The hot and sour soup arrived quickly and was very hot. Overly sour and visually appealing matched its flavor. A couple spoonfuls and I set it aside. The entree came out quickly and Wow! That is a lot of food for $5.50. The overly sour theme continued with the deep fried chicken pieces. No other real defining flavor. Tastes like chicken is the best I can come up with. The vegetables were limp and tasted like they were boiled. The stir fried rice was bland. Did I mention the hot tea had no flavor/identity? How do you screw up hot tea? Fast, hot and plenty of it. I've been eating at this place for over 10 years. It's nothing fancy or healthy, but it is cheap and good. I'm usually a creature of habit at this restaurant, especially since I no longer live in the area so don't visit that often. So I order the sesame chicken with eggroll and hot and sour soup every time. And it never disappoints. The last time I visited I was surprised to see that they had a large menu of American-type seafood dinners (mostly fried, I believe), and that about half of the patrons were eating those. Fortune has been in Texas City for over ten years and has been consistently good. Exceptional soups include the best Hot and Sour Soup I have ever tasted. Standout entrees include the General Tso's chicken and Mongolian Chicken or Beef (order the chicken even if you don't see it on the menu!). A great appetizer is the "Beef on a stick", it comes out with a mini grill complete with fire - you can sear the beef to your taste and even comes with a fresh pineapple wedge. Service is good - they will keep your tea glass full. They serve some great fried onion strips with your soup that you will come to love. They have remodeled a couple of times over the years, but the best investment they made is the tables and chairs. During lunch they make it non-smoking because of the volume of people coming in, but there is a smoking section in the evening. This place does a huge amount of business, especially take out - so be prepared to navigate through a cluster of people, but there always seems to be an open table. I am giving this place five stars because it is a consistent experience for years, and everything on the menu is good. If I could improve one thing - I would ask for a good Kung Pao chicken, since they only serve Cashew Chicken. However, the Cashew Chicken is good - I just prefer a spicier dish. Enjoy! read more
