Croissants are virtually synonymous with butter, in my opinion. But opinions can change. Clementine Bakery makes a vegan croissant that will fulfill any croissant craving that you have. You cannot be upset about eating this croissant. You cannot even be upset if one of your friends corrects your pronunciation of croissant, as long as you are eating it. And yes, I get that I am pronouncing it wrong, but I can't help but feel like it sounds silly to have one proper French word come out of my mouth in my otherwise generic American sentence. It's been a while since I've had an actual po' boy so I'm not sure how this one compares, but it was alright. The bread was pretty toasted but I wish it was more light and fluffy so that it'd be more like a po' boy than a regular sandwich. My family ordered my birthday cake from here this year and it was delish! I'm lactose intolerant so seeing as Clementine makes their cakes dairy free, I got to enjoy a sweet treat without worrying about it. The cake I received was a 6 inch vanilla cream cheese frosting with funfetti cake. It was truly amazing. Super moist and just the right amount of icing. Clementine Bakery is a plant-based café, and walking in, I immediately appreciated the greenery and the low-key, cool atmosphere. It felt calm and unassuming -- the kind of place that doesn't try too hard, but still invites you to slow down. I decided to order a matcha. Knowing the café is plant-based, I did ask for whole milk, which they don't offer, so I tried one of their alternatives instead. I didn't personally enjoy it, but that was more about my own taste palate than the quality of the drink. I think if I had taken more time to play with the sweetness or adjust the balance, I could've gotten the matcha closer to the flavor profile I like -- especially since I'm more used to matcha with 2% milk or something similar. They also had food items available -- pastries and other baked goods -- along with a variety of drinks. I was in and out fairly quickly, but it definitely felt like a place where you could stay longer if time allowed. Overall, Clementine feels like a quaint corner spot where you could easily sit, zone out, and just be at peace for a bit. They make very good drinks (coffees, teas, matcha, chai etc) with no up charges for different milks (they dont offer cows milk obviously) They also have a wide selection of pastries and cakes. The donuts are delicious! Not too sweet and very fluffy. My only gripe is you cant get any of the pastries warmed up I havent tried but they have a breakfast and lunch menu as well. Compared to my first visit to Clementine Bakery, I think the quality has gone downhill. The pastries looked delicious, but the taste was a letdown. I ordered the "cruffin" which is a croissant muffin topped with fresh fruit. It's visually beautiful and looks like it has the flaky texture of a non-vegan croissant, but it tasted kinda stale and chewy/raw inside. I also ordered a carrot cupcake and it was hella dry. I was so disappointed in the flavor and texture of the pastries ordered :(( I did visit in the afternoon so maybe that's why the pastries weren't fresh or the best tasting. Other than this experience, I usually love Clementine Bakery. I love their friendly staff, extensive baked goods suitable for vegan/gluten free individuals, and kindness they demonstrate to their customers. But, this last visit was very average. I actually love this bakery and have been coming here since it was a tiny little hole in the wall. This one star review is SOLELY for the black female employee who is veiled in black. This is probably the 5th time she's been rude or dismissive with me. Her tone is always unfriendly, she greets other patrons but never greets me...today I simply asked her for more syrup in my coffee and instead of saying, "Sure," she just brings out the syrup and just says in her same rude tone, "lift it," referring to my coffee cup. As a woman of color myself, it saddens me to see her kissing up to white patrons while repeatedly being rude to me. Someone needs to have a conversation with her. This place is right off the subway and so easy to get to. The staff is always so friendly and you can tell they enjoy their jobs. The food is delicious, I've had a bagel with cream cheese (which is hard to get wrong) and a sweet potato sandwich (the aoli could have been spread more evenly), both of which were delicious. The sandwich was much bigger than I expected and was very filling. Their baristas make fantastic drinks, they always feel special. One of my coworkers recommended this place to me because I love going to bakeries and trying pastries. I went around 4pm on a Saturday, and there were not many options for baked goods. I ended up getting their Sweet Bread Pastry and I thought it was pretty solid. The outside had a rustic bread texture, but the inside was very fluffy. I can't speak to the other items on their menu, since I was coming mainly for their pastries. The inside is really cute! They have plants on sale and a bunch of other items too. I've been going to Clementine for many years and finally got around to making a review. I remember when they used to have the peanut butter and jelly squares. I haven't seen those in the last year. I've tried cupcakes in the past so this time around I tried their vegan strawberry cake. I was excited to try it, but unfortunately was disappointed. It was quite dry, almost to the point of being stale and the butter cream icing was thin and lacked any flavor. This would normally amount to a 3 star or lower rating, but Clementine has been consistent over time so the 4 star rating stands for now. This is a cute neighborhood bakery. I'm a cream cheese frosting snob and asked what type of frosting the cupcakes had but the employee wasn't able to tell me. It was a bit disappointing that she wasn't more knowledgeable. I ended up getting a red velvet cupcake and it turned out to have regular vanilla frosting. The cupcakes are kept in a refrigerated case which makes sense in the summer heat so mine was a bit cold when I ate it. The cake seemed like it would be moist at room temperature. The frosting was thick and dense. Not the best, not the worst! They have a ton of outdoor seating in the front and on the side of the bakery, some of which is shared with the ice cream shop next door. read more

One of my favorite places. I don't mind paying $40 for a pie, but unfortunately, the girl working the register had problems with my order. I ordered two cupcakes and she only gave me one. Then she forgot to give me the brownie she charged me for and then gave me the wrong brownie. Listen, I am a grown adult. I don't want sprinkles on my brownie; I wanted the (vegan) cream cheese one. Feel free to ask me to repeat if you don't understand. This happened ANOTHER time with ANOTHER brownie. The wrong brownie was good that time, but this one wasn't good at all. I dropped $56 then also paid for the additional cupcake she forgot to get/charge me for. It's on me for not checking every single item right then and there with a line behind me. I also had a couple of Too Good to Go orders that they canceled when I was on the way to get them. Clementine Bakery is GREAT, but they need to up their customer service a little bit. One time when I was in there near closing, an employee said "Nobody is in here at this hour...." and I was thinking, wow, I'm here. You'd be forgiven if you mistook the inside of this bakery for the inside of a plant shop, or even that of a movie set depicting a grocery store. The shelves of this provisions shop are filled with colorful, picture perfect fruits and vegetables that look cartoonishly good. The plants hanging all around the space are also appropriate for the entirely plant based menu specializing in custom cakes, sandwiches, bowls, and salads, and pastries. I visited on a summer weekday afternoon and every outdoor table in their extensive al fresco set up was occupied. A friend and I enjoyed a blueberry danish and pistachio croissant under the awning of their shop, after waiting in line for a bit. I was impressed by the lamination of the dough without the help of butter, and the consistency of the "cream cheese" in the blueberry danish. I found both pastries just a hint too sweet, but that might just be my anomalous palate, because from what I can tell this place is very beloved. I was looking for a bakery near where I was at on the border of Clinton Hill and Bed Stuy and saw Clementine Bakery was nearby, so decided to give it a try. It was a cute, quaint shop offering baked goods, sandwiches, bowls, salads, coffees, teas, and more. Note: they offer both vegan and gluten-free options here! It was around 1pm, so their options were understandably lessened at that point. The cashier didn't seem too enthusiastic about being there in general and maybe just was having a bad day, but unfortunately came across as unfriendly. As I was trying to decide what I wanted, as all of my mains and back-up options were out, I watched another employee rearrange some muffins and dropped one on the shelf. They tried to act like they were going to take it off the shelf because they saw me witness them do that, then ended up putting it back with the other muffins and walked away. So I made sure not to order any of them, as that's a food health and safety hazard. As a food establishment, it should be a priority to value health and safety over losing a few bucks. In the end, I went with Monkey Bread and a Vanilla Donut. They both were large in size, and average in taste. One thing I did notice is that part of the wrapping got stuck on the monkey bread, so they might want to reconsider how they package it. As much as I wanted to love this spot, the experience and food was just subpar to me. I've written multiple times about the challenges to find a good chai latte. So many places either make them too sweet or too spicy without any flavor but the spice. Ultimately, more of the good chais end up being just sweet, not spicy, but not too sweet either. Enter Clementine Bakery. Their chai has the spicy flavor that I love, while still being sweet at the same time. It's the perfect combination of both of the flavors that you're supposed to get. Funny enough I had walked by this place for years and never gone in, and now that I finally tried it I've gone two days in a row. I also had their strawberry scone yesterday and it was delicious. Scones are another hit or miss item for a lot of places, and this one was one of the best I've had. I'm so happy I finally made it here and definitely plan on continuing to go back. read more
