Sixteen Mill is one of my favorite places in Brooklyn. They're vegan, gluten-free, and refined sugar-free, and they turn out some of the best baked goods I've had. Their shop window is open from Wednesday through Sunday, and they're so good that, if we're anywhere nearby or even just going in that direction, I'm always trying to figure out if I can fit in a detour to get some treats. The menu changes to fit the season, and the best way to keep track of what they might have on any given day is to check their Instagram and then the display cabinet by the register. My favorites are the donuts, cookies, small cakes, and the babka muffins, and I usually pair them with a strawberry hojicha latte, matcha, or some iced tea. They do have a few tables for outdoor seating if you're looking to enjoy everything right away. Looking forward to trying more soon! read more

Sixteen Mills in Gowanus is a gluten free and vegan bakery providing delicious pastries that accommodate most allergens. We ordered the chocolate chip pumpkin muffin, vanilla liege waffle and sourdough scallion scone. These were excellent pastries irrespective of being gluten free. They are so nice. Workers are absoutly so sweet and hard working . In this incredible heat they still make the experience good. Not only this but people bulk order and I can't imagine how hard it is. The food is soooooo good. Love going here for gluten free snacks and treats. Super accessible and easy to get to. Babka muffin is so good. Tiramisu also good. Cofffee is superrrrr good. BY FAR one of my favorite bakeries in Brooklyn and they're vegan and gluten free!! It is nearly impossible to find delicious vegan and/or gluten free pastries anywhere, but Sixteen Mill destroys it every time! The donuts are my go-to and I've never had a variety I didn't like (as you can see from my photos)! They're soft, dense and usually frosted -- if you enjoy almond flour pastries, you'll love the texture and weight of these baddies! They have a cute takeout storefront with limited seating. If you order ahead there's a slight up charge, but it guarantees you get the pastries you want -- as some (like the apple cider donuts) sell out! Match and coffee drinks are available as well. If you are interested in a vegan and gluten free bakery, this is it! It's a very small place with an order window and a few outdoor seats. But, the options are fantastic! They really figured out the gluten free and vegan formula for super moist and delicious food. There were about 10-12 different items to choose from. Savory and sweet baked goods. I could not write the review fast enough! I haven't even finished eating everything but I'm so in love and I want the world to know! Stopped by here on a Saturday on the recommendation of a friend. Right now it's outdoor seating only with a pick up window - not sure if it's different in the winter. I tried the sourdough scallion scone which a friend of mine says tastes exactly like a scallion pancake. The flavor was incredible and the texture was bouncy on the inside with an incredible crunch on the outside. Because they don't use refined sugars, the yuzu blueberry donut was the perfect amount of sweet. Nothing sickly sweet but still definitely a sweet treat. Incredibly bouncy and moist without being doughy like some gluten & vegan things can be. I also tried their strawberry matcha - definitely recommend! Love that they make their own in-house oat milk and almond milk. Since they're a vegan spot, no dairy milk but tons of plant based milks and none are at an extra charge which I appreciated. Many of their pastries and drinks are influenced by Japanese flavors. I was especially excited to try their strawberry matcha. Mostly a take and go operation, but there is some seating outside. They have their pastries on display and along with my matcha, I indulged on a matcha blueberry donut. I don't often have GF pastries but this donut was dense. Still pretty good just wasn't what I expected. I don't have matcha too often and I'm not sure if it was the addition of oatly (since they're vegan) but it was a touch chalky at first tasting. Such an amazing gem on the border of Downtown Brooklyn and Park Slope. They make their goodies gluten free as well as without refined sugar - instead they use maple sweetener. This place was super cute and small inside. Definitely a hole in the wall and I noticed them because of the sign they had sticking outside. This spot is perfect if you want to try items that are vegan or dairy free. The Tahini cake was so thick and rich. The chocolate was amazing and was the perfect amount of sweet. The pumpkin pie had a jelly like consistency which was different than expected but the crust was great . Ugh my favorite bakery in Brooklyn. My fiancé and I go all the time- I used to be vegan and now still try to avoid dairy but boy oh boy every person I've taken here has been a fan and has had zero complaints about the dairy / gluten / sugar free aspect. We love to get the tahini Carmel chocolate cake slice and iced coffees on our birthdays as a breakfast treat. The scallion scone is also fire! Cookies also yummy. The babka muffins are good but a little greasy- not enough to deter me from not getting it again tho. The donuts are always fun- love trying their new flavor combos on them! We came here on a Sunday and it was a pretty packed bakery. I got a latte and a chocolate babka muffin. The latte was good. I like how there was a bunch of alternative sweeteners like monk fruit syrup and coconut sugar. The chocolate babka muffin was really good. It was not too sweet but still had the good chocolate taste. However this bakery is a bit on the expensive side. Overall, I would came here again to try other pastries. read more

Gluten free bakery items are hard to come by , but vegan ones are nearly impossible (unless you make them yourself) here comes Sixteen Mill to fill the void. I discovered the brand when they would occasionally carry items at Orchard Grocer (they are no longer carried there but they do wholesale with a number of coffee shops in Brooklyn and Manhattan as well as Electric Beet which is not too far away). They have now opened their own little shop in Park Slope-Gowanus. They make an assortment of pastries and breads. I have tried out mostly all of their pasteries except for their brownie. The chocolate babka muffin or bread is a must! It's indescribably delicious. My second favorite item is their cakes which vary in flavors. The cakes are decadent and are not as dense as vegan cakes tend to be, they are closer to a regular cake. The donuts are also a great option they are cake style. The scones are good they not dry and crumbly like traditional scones. The cookies are soft chew style. The whoopie needs to be a new permanent item. It actually might take spot of the cakes... it is so good! My only gripe would be is that they use almond flour in almost all of their pastries. Today I stopped by on Mother's Day and felt bad that I couldn't pick up any pasteries for my mom as the only nut she happens to be allergic to is you guessed it... ALMONDS. One of the few reasons I even walk towards 3rd Ave. This bakery has some of the best breads and babka I've eaten and is right up there on my hitlist. Absolutely incredible. You'd miss this place if you weren't looking for it. It's a little window- nothing special or fancy..it's a grab and go. The scones are out of this world. Both the red pepper and scallion are amazing. If you like savory scones, you'll love these. Even if you're not vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and refined sugar free....go to try the scones. They're that good. I'd travel for these (and then head over to the park to enjoy). The chocolate chip cookie is amazing- but it's not a traditional cookie, and you can tell. Got into this place as they make the gluten free treats served at Matchaful. My first visit to the brick and mortar shop was winter 2024. Baked goods are excellent. I love their focaccia and belgian waffle most. Be warned the vibes and overall atmosphere are way off. The proprietors are married. On my third visit the male owner loudly declared to his employee working the register, as he ended an apparent disagreement with his wife/ co-owner and she walked into the back, "hey man if no one has ever told you, do not EVER go into business with your wife." Yikes. It was clearly meant to humiliate her. Completely tasteless. Besides this, I've visited multiple times and been stared at for too many seconds without being greeted to be a (repeat) paying customer. I stopped going because of how unpleasant my interactions with the owners (who are often front-facing) have been. Also their matcha is chalky. Avoid it. read more

Their food is so excellent. Everything I've had from there has been really, really good. So so good. I've never had such good gluten free baked goods before. The people who work here are great, as well. A couple of things to note. One is that they're kind of hidden so you wouldn't know there there unless you were waking past. The second is that there's not really anywhere to sit aside from a couple of stools at the window, and some space outside when weather is nice, so be prepared to have a place to bring the food. read more

Here's the thing: I understand quality ingredients are used, and that gluten-free and dairy-free baked goods are always more expensive than their conventional counterparts. However, I've enjoyed other baker's gluten-free/vegan items (with similarly clean ingredients) and no one charges as much as Sixteen Mill does. On top of the expense, in considering an order for "shipping" (the only option to have items delivered to Manhattan) I've discovered they include the $13 shipping fee added to the purchase total when calculating the tax. No other company does this. Whether it's a hig retail store or a small/local order, the tax is only charged on the actual items purchased. Then a shipping or delivery fee is the final addition. As expensive as everything is to begin with, I'd appreciate Sixteen Mill adjusting their taxing system at check-out, to match what is common practice everywhere else. read more

if youre gluten free, vegan, or just like pastries you need to come here! its has a small interior with a few tables outside so i reccomend just picking up and taking it home. we ate it there at the counter inside because we live too far. i was SO excited to find a bakery not only dedicated to being vegan & gluten free but also to be maple sweetened. that is hard to come by. the workers were all super friendly and helpful. we tried the vanilla rose raspberry doughnut, chocolate babka muffin, & sour cherry chocolate coffee cream cake. the chocolate babka is a MUST! if i had just gotten the doughnut i would have been happy but compared to everything else i wouldnt get it again. the chocolate cherry cake wowwww. i ate that within 5 mins. 100% the best cake slice ive ever eaten in my whole life. im not a chocolate cherry person but this was undeniably good. it has a fudgey swirl throughout and the lightest cream frosting on top yum omg. read more

I went in and purchased a piece of chocolate cake to eat takeout. Luckily, I had opened the cake and took a bite on the same block when I discovered the cake was extremely dry and hard to eat. I'm genuinely not one to complain about things, but I could not eat it. It's not that it was bad. I just could not eat it. It was so dry. It was hard for me to even swallow. I went in and explained and asked for another item or another piece of cake and the worker said "oh you're one of those people who are coming in and trying to give a one star review huh" it was super odd, especially because for me it wasn't that serious i wasn't gonna leave a review. it's just cake. they were super aggressive and said "i can give you something else if you want to be like that" it ruined my day just kind of an uncanny moment. Their focaccia is very yummy. The staff are nice and helpful too. I love that I can support a local business and get myself a treat that won't make me sick! I've been aware of my gluten sensitivity for 10 years & lactose intolerance for nearly 20 years so I have tried many bakeries & brands based on these dietary restrictions. I don't usually write reviews but Sixteen Mill has exceptional food/treats so I need to share. I enjoyed the scone, which was a fluffy, moist, & crispy texture (similar to Red Lobster biscuits, I used to love those when I could eat them in the restaurant) & a rasberry cake textured donut that was moist through & through. The icing on the donut was smooth & tasty, not gummy or melting off. I don't know what they do that is different from the other bakeries but I've never had gf/vegan this delicious & moist & w/out that gummy texture. I encourage anyone who has spent money on disappointing gf/vegan treats time & time again to make the trip to Gowanus, Brooklyn.
