I've had the pleasure of visiting Cleo's Bodega at least three times now. For starters, I love the huge mural painted alongside the building and parking lot. Second, I'm hopeful that during my next visit I'll be able to enjoy their beautiful pergola and patio for meetings. The small bodega in the back portion of the building offers incredibly priced items alongside produce grown next door via the Flanner House. In the front of the house, the cafe sells coffee drinks, smoothies, breakfast and lunchtime sandwiches and a few other snack items. I was thrilled to learn that they use Tinker Coffee (locally roasted and packs a punch). The only hiccup I had during my last visit was that the shopkeeper (it manager) was last to open up the shop and we had a fairly large group arriving for a meeting. Glad it all worked out so everyone could experience this business and community asset. I look forward to reuniting with Cleo's post-COVID. read more

I was excited to try Cleo's Bodega & Cafe after reading Richard P.'s excellent, and detailed, review. This area has struggled so after the local grocery store closed and this Bodega brings some much needed relief. I have friends in this area and hear often of the impact not having a convenient grocery store has taken. Now folks have some relief with this wonderful option of both a Cafe and mini grocery store plus it offers employment through the Flanner House. Cleo's is very easy to find with street parking or a small lot on the North side of the building. A huge mural is painted on the North side of the building and easily seen. As you enter through the left door you turn left for the Cafe or right to go through the door for the grocery store. The Cafe is bright with natural lighting, a cheerful atmosphere and very clean with several dine in tables. The free customer Wifi user name and password is taped to the end of the table. A wonderful pergola covered outdoor deck provides additional seating overlooking the new Flanner House greenspace. Display cases are filled with pastries (Crossiant, muffins, cookies, danish), parfaits, beverages and snacks (granola bars, chips). The menu is located on the order counter and consist of Smoothies and Coffee flavors. I was told today they expanded the menu and are now serving sandwiches. The new menu wasn't printed yet but sounded as if it's a perfect addition to bring more patrons in the doors. They serve Tinker House coffee and offer 8 types of Smoothies including build your own. The counter staff was super friendly, worked well together and happy to answer questions. I ordered the Helly Smoothie with strawberry, blueberry, raspberries, blackberries, vanilla yogurt and orange juice. It only took a few minutes to prepare, ice cold and reasonably priced. Lots of berry seeds, which I'm not a fan of, and Ken mentioned in his review. I worked around them as the Smoothie was very refreshing and flavorful. Maybe next time I'll make my own with a maximum of 5 ingredients. The other half of the building is the Bodega or Under the Sun Discount Market. It is the perfect size for this location. The isles are wide enough, the shelves were clean, well organized and grouped accordingly. You'll find daily $1 general merchandise bins. They use a simple pricing, color-coded method ranging from 50 cent (no sticker) to $1 (black), $2 (blue), $4 (green), $6 (red) marked in the bar code area. Some of the bulk items run more than $6 but most things are $6 or less. They also have a weekly staple schedule so you can be assured your staple is available. I found fresh veggies from the Flanner House, Urban Farmers and others, dairy products, fresh meats, bread, spaghetti sauce, canned meats, cake mixes, cereal, pastas, and many more packaged foods. A very nice variety for a small grocery. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful explaining pricing and the weekly staple schedule. Offering employment opportunities, a friendly cafe offering sandwiches, smoothies, coffee and snacks to a much needed Bodega in this food desert area. So, I was in the Flanner House area for the block party for black businesses. I decided to go to Cleo's Bodega store on this hot day, and especially since I was outside sweating. The store is very good for the Flanner House community, there are patio seating, garden area, & very peaceful. It was my first time at the store which I ended up creating my own smoothie with mango, apples, peaches, almond milk, and orange juice. That was a very tasty smoothie for a picky eater like myself. I haven't been in the Flanner House area in many years, and to see how far it has come I'm happy on that progress. Also, I did walk around from the store to the Flanner House building where I noticed there are free food spots we could put food in for the people of that community. I'm definitely going to start adding food to those food stands to help someone out. Great vibes, nice place for the community, and it's a lot of healthy items there too. Every time I stop by Cleo's I'm met with great music, awesome local artwork, and friendly faces. Even better is the dedication to good local food! While they don't have a huge selection you can easily fill up on sandwiches, salad, and locally made pastries. A variety of Coffee, lattes, teas, and smoothies are also available. My favorite though is the grilled cheese options that are made with local Chef Oya's Trap Butter! They are amazing! Today I tried the new 'other' sandwich. Pesto, provolone, spinach, tomato, and turkey on bread slathered with garlic trap butter and grilled. OMG it was delicious! Y'all the homemade strawberry pop tart is out of this world! I love this place! Staff was very friendly. They have a large indoor and outdoor seating area. Outlets are around the walls. Large windows around the place. The outdoor area has some shade and some direct sunlight for those of us who like to sunbath and work at the same time. They have Tinker coffee!! Enough said! On Friday, I volunteered at the Flanner House job fair. I was surprised to see one of my newly pinned must visit places was right next door!!! And even more excited when I learned that Cleo's is Flanner house's cafe!!! What a great idea!!!!! So of course I had to stop in before I headed home. Make your own smoothie was for me! You could chose two bases, so I went with OJ and yogurt. For fruit, I selected banana, strawberry and blueberry. It was sooooo yummy!! Glad to see a new coffee shop with food/groceries available in the area. I live just up the street and the options are limited. Although I had just stopped in for coffee, the cafe smelled great so I'll have to Come back for lunch. They also had a good truck Parked outside which I thought complimented the cafe since they don't have too many food options. Since it was my first time in I wanted to be sure to try something that was unique to the cafe but felt a bit rushed with the menu only visible in front of the register. After quickly looking it over, I asked the gentlemen behind the counter what his favorite drink was and went with that! "The Rice is Right" was a very flavorful coffee that I got iced with his suggestion. Been following them on Facebook but never had a chance to visit, heard they had live music so I decided to go on Friday, August 13th. Upon walking in everyone was very friendly and spoke. I truly appreciate when you walk in and everyone speaks. They serve smoothies, drinks, salads, sandwiches, soups, desserts....they have many choices even for vegetarians and vegans. They have specials called one and done and today it was Italian beef on a bun, if you are vegan they had one made with jack fruit. I think on my sandwich they forgot to butter and grill my bun because my daughter came about and hour after me and hers was...anywho the sandwich was very tasty, meat was tender and seasoned just right I had mine with chips and bought a brownie for later...which I had later that evening, not sure if they make their own desserts but the brownie was nice and moist, chocolatey and very good. Went outside to sit and listened to the band it was a type of jazz band with a guy on the bass his name was Fred, guy on keyboard and a lady singing which her voice was amazing and really enjoyed the band, never did get their name. Also outside the Flanner House next door I assume had a table outside selling fresh veggies from their garden they had anything you could imagine greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc...I went and purchased 2 green tomatoes and 2 cucumbers which only cost me $2. Overall it was truly a great experience and I would go back, the only thing that surprised me was the one and done sandwich which sells for $8. I like Cleo's establishment. It's def IG pic worthy inside! Several art inside to take pics at with beautiful creative Black art! (Including a BLM prop sign). The outside has several images featuring noble black civil rights leaders like Booker T Washington, Albert Smith under neath the Cleo Signage. Love the restaurant section that service good cheese grills with Trapsauce Buttah., good price. Good options available. Love that they also offer NON GMO natural juices like sangria and green tea. 3 stars unfortunately because the lady with the locs could've been a lil more customer service orientated considering these times. I ordered a Chai that tasted like ice coffee when I went up to the counter she made me feel like I was wrong. On top of that, people that came after me got their drinks before I complained about my GF drinks so I felt because of the complaint we had to wait way longer then we should've for our order. Everything also came out separately and they need before organizing and time management. However, for the establishment alone, I suggest supporting this beautiful bodega and restaurant and hope you have a better friendly customer service. If you are a business owner / entrepreneur too, take advantage of the long table where you can leave a card or info. Nice networking table. BTW the young guy with the pretty eyes was pleasant but he wasn't before the register and she was the one handling people's order behind the counter. Suggestion: A cashier should speak. THIS PLACE IS IT!! The employees really make the business. You can't come in here and leave without a smile on your face. It feels like a family. The smoothies are seriously incredible, with non dairy options and tons of healthy add ins. I recommend Higher Vibration & Westside. But they're all good as hell. You can make your own too w/ the ingredients they have. If you're vegan or vegetarian you can get a filling meal here, with a salad and smoothie or grilled cheese (sorry non dairy folx). I've tried two of the grilled cheeses, both the Sweet Thai chili and That Other Sandwich. Lemme just say WHEWWWWWW. Both were sooooooo good. I think the Thai Chili has chili on the outside of the bread too, which was a spiritual experience. So much flavor & taste. Cooked perfectly and not lacking a thing. So glad to see this addition to the MLK corridor. The Cafe a great community gathering place for a quick snack, smoothie and good meeting place. With so many windows and natural lighting, it's a great place to work out of. The patio will be great for warm weather gatherings. Being here a week after opening, it's full of people. The smoothie selections are great and very affordable. $3.74 for a healthy fruit smoothie that would cost $5-8 almost anywhere else. They still need to add some menu signage and fill the bakery cases a bit more, but again, they've only been open for a week at this point. With Flanner Farms next door, soon the Bodega will be carrying fresh produce directly from the farm. While it's not a full grocery, you can def pick up most components for a meal and dry goods. It may not be your only or main grocer, but def a great option for getting food for neighbors. Congrats to Flanner House for pulling this off and to the City of Indianapolis for the construction grant investment! read more

Me and a friend on yesterday happened to be going up Martin Luther King Jr St when we notice a Cafe & Grocery at the corner of 24th & MLK Jr st... called CLEO's BODEGA & CAFE. So after church today some friends & myself thought we would give it a whirl. We all had a wonderful enlightening experience with the many types of energy drinks & smoothies....the desserts were absolutely to die for. And the service was impeccable and even the well stocked grocery in the rear was reasonably priced. Next week the staff said they will start serving soups & sandwiches. I live in Lawrence, IN far Eastside of Indy, however we will be making a trip back soon & VERY soon!!!!!! read more

My daughter and I have eaten here twice this spring. We had brisket & the turkey ribs, both were quite good. The turkey ribs were absolutely delicious! Everyone should go out of their way to try them, fall off the bone tender! These were both the meat special of the day. This is a small batch local place! Their vegan cinna bomb cake is wonderful. Smoothies are no sugar added, just the ingredients you order with nondairy options. The staff is so nice. I highly recommend Cleo's. read more
