We were staying next door at the Sonder Promenade. We called in the order and headed down ten minutes later. When we arrived the food was not ready and we waited another 15 minutes. The grilled salmon and shrimp was very good, as was the hummus. The gyro was bad. The meat was dry and over cooked. The pita was also dry and fell apart. Cleo's has progressively gotten worse since Covid. I recently ordered a chicken shawarma and it was bad like really bad. They use some mayonnaise style sauce that was terrible and the meat was few and far between. The flavors were way off from what I was used to. It's both a restaurant a corner store with snacks and drinks on the go. I've eaten here twice. Once during covid (to go) and once before for dine in. Literally the best traditional hummus and kabob downtown located in a bodega. Went to 3 different Mediterranean eateries and this one blew it out of the water. Horrible experience here. My wife and I love trying new places in new cities, and we're shocked by how bad of an experience this was. We placed a chicken kabeb order and a side of french fries. We specifically ordered this because we only eat chicken breast for health reasons. This one order specifically said it was chicken breast chunks with two sides, so it was our obvious choice. We walk 13 minutes back to our hotel, and when we open the plate, we find the "chicken breast" chunks are all chicken thighs. Also, there was no white garlic sauce that the worker, Daisa, said she put in the bag. No problem, we will call and try to make this right; not a massive deal. We call back, and immediately Dasia gets super defensive. She claims that "chicken breast and thigh is the same thing," which, no, I'm sorry, is not the same. When we said the menu item specifically said it was breast meat, she said oh, we mix breast and thigh meat. Then we said there was no garlic sauce in the bag. She immediately said, "no, there is. just look in the bag and look all around. I'm positive I put it in the bag; I put it myself". When we repeatedly said there was no white garlic sauce, she got even more defensive and started saying we were lying and that she checked the footage (????). At this point, this was getting ridiculous and so immature that we asked for a refund. She then cut us off and openly admitted to being wrong and that she confused us for another customer. 90 seconds prior, she called us a liar, and we "held the bag wrong, and it must've fallen out." Overall ridiculous situation. She said she would remake the dish, but we had already walked 30 minutes back and forth and needed to head to the airport. She gave us a refund over the phone. To the restaurant owner: I hope you take this constructive feedback and do something about it. Calling your customers liars, giving food different from what's on the menu, and then fighting your customer on a $1.60 garlic sauce isn't the way to run your business. Having your staff yell at customers and getting THAT heated over the situation is an incredibly bad look. For $25.00 (chicken, rice, hummus, fries), you would hope for better quality service and food. I'm happy to further explain this situation to management if they're inclined to learn more. read more

I was staying at the Roosevelt and wanted quick dinner without wading through a sea of tourist traps for a decent bite to eat. Cloe's was just at the end of the block and definitely fit the bill. They're open 24 hours, have an extensive menu and the convenience store has a great selection of cold drinks, candies, and even an entire wall of various instant ramen and udon! I wasn't really in the mood for anything heavy late at night so I went with the grilled flounder and fried shrimp with basmati, rice, and hummus on the side. The seafood was well seasoned but the portion size left a bit to be desired and the rice was pretty good. The real standout was the flatbread and hummus, which was excellent, and I can see why the lamb and hummus is so popular here. I'll be heading head back in the next day or so. to check it out. Located on Canal street, while walking by one night i noticed it was open late i already had dinner, but i made a mental note because of the good smells that was coming out of this joint. A corner store basically serving up delicious food. The following day i dropped in and ordered a beef shawarma sandwich and some hummus. Both were outstanding, they didnt' skimp on the meat. We arrived along with thousands of other Swifties and found Cleo's around the corner from our hotel. After a long day of dancing, walking, and sightseeing, we were so happy to find it open very late. The food was absolutely delicious and unique. The grape leaves had a delicate flavor, and I could just taste the hint of mint. Baba ganoush, salad, and hummus were equally good, and the warm pita bread topped it off perfectly. It's a little confusing when you first walk in because it looks like a convenience store. Just ask the person at the desk and they'll hand you the menu. There are even chairs in the back of this to-go only location for waiting. Overpriced, unauthentic junk food. Don't be swayed by the pictures. The actual food looks nothing like them. The lamb shawarma is tough and chewy. The labneh is rancid. The pita is cold and stale. The baklava is old and drizzled with chocolate syrup. Chocolate syrup on baklava? I guess they thought it would hide the lack of nuts and low quality dough. What an interesting lifesaver. When in NOLA, it's almost a requirement to eat and drink endlessly. However, on this trip I wasn't feeling so well and was seeking non-saucy/buttery fare. Did a quick Bourbon St. area search for Mediterranean food and Cleo's comes to the rescue. From the outside, and especially since it's on Canal, it gives off NYC bodega vibes complete with a window stocked full of candy and snacks. Once you enter, you quickly discover you're in for a treat. It goes from convenience store to fully operational and clean restaurant once you pass a few steps inside. There's even a server to take your order should you dine in or carry out. I have to admit...wasn't expecting that help. My order only took about 15 min and checkout was simple. I got the Chicken Shawarma with rice and a side salad and it was seasoned perfectly! Not only was it good but this place is open 24 hours! Convenience store that also serves food. Food is good, though somewhat over salted, but the service was horrendous. The staff doesn't even care when they make mistakes that mean you have to stand around another 25 minutes waiting. Response to the owners reply: That excuse should make sense except I placed my order in person the same time that my friends placed theirs. It was when their order came out (same amount of food as mine), along with two other people who had ordered after me in the store got their orders, that I began to question where my order was. From that point the guy up front kept telling me oh just a couple more minutes. 20 minutes later is when I started looking at the cooks in the kitchen and you came out with your story about so many orders. This is my ideal kind of restaurant. Probably would get me pushed in a locker by most fine-dining aficionados, but just... how can you not love a 24/7 Mediterranean restaurant located in the back of a full-on convenience store? I loved every moment of walking in, placing my to-go order (for a full rack of lamb chops with two sides, hell yeah) and grabbing a can of FOCO roasted coconut milk from the very extensive fridge of drinks - seriously, who needs Coke or ~kombucha~ if you can get that deliciously sweet, concentrated glass bottle of mango juice I only find in my dreams, one Indian restaurant in Boston, and Cleo's? Anyways, try a random drink. If you don't know what you're drinking, that just means it's delicious. The lamb chops were perfectly seasoned, the rice cooked well and the hummus INCREDIBLE. Man, I didn't expect hummus that comes as a side to hit like that. Seasoning, olive oil, some greenery on there as well (I'll call that my vegetable intake for the day)? God, yes. We went here reading the raving reviews of the place. Its an unassuming place merged with a convenience store. It had about 3 or 4 tables only but its open 24 hours. I would think its a gem (especially for Vegans/Vegetarians). And the fact that it is very close to the Bourbon Street, is a plus. We ordered the Veggie Platter. The menu states that all Vegetarian Platters come with Pita, Salad or Rice, but upon ordering we were told that the menu is incorrect. It does not come with Salad or Rice. The funny part is their website has a menu which also says the same thing. Apparently the other meat platters come with Pita, Salad/Rice. The price is the same, so felt it was a little unfair towards Vegetarians. Mainly because the quantity is not much. The platter is ~$15. The Veggie platter came with Humus, Baba Ghanoush, Tabbouleh, Falafel and Veggie-Grape Leaves and served with pita bread. The Veggie Grape leaves were amazing. Hummus and Falafel was really good too. The second thing we ordered was Foul Madamas (~$7). I did not fancy this dish much. There was a strong Kalamata Olive flavor in this dish which was not very pleasant. I have had amazing Foul Madamas in other Mediterranean restaurants. However, since we were famished, we managed to finish it all. The server was very sweet. I think she was new and still training, so was very kind to go back and forth into the kitchen to get our questions answered. +one Star for that. In my opinion, the place was a little pricey. But the location and the timings are all very well! I do recommend this place to everyone and we may be back to this place the next time we are in NOLA. read more

My relationship is difficult to explain but here goes. If I wanted Mediterranean food before 9p, this would not be my choice. EVER. That said, it's good. Love the food, especially when in search for a healthier option after 12am. Almost always open 24/7. Occasionally they're closed but 90% of the time, it's open. It's a cramped convenience store with a few tables and chairs. My preference is takeout so I can't speak to the dining in experience. The pricing for Mediterranean food is outrageous when you think of the cost of a kebab or gyro in NYC or Chicago after hours. For that matter, traditional establishments with a nice ambience are probably the the same or less. Cleo's sells almost every type of non-alcoholic beverage you can think of. The selection is seriously endless but the pricing is on par with convenience store prices elsewhere. That said, the store is cluttered, fellow patrons at late hours are often third shift workers headed home with a few seedy characters mixed in. After spending $56 on two lamb chops plates after arriving to town after 11p wanting nothing more than to check in to the hotel, have a decent bite to eat and prepare for my work day the next morning, I experienced any but. Called in the order but it somehow took a total of 30 minutes. During my 15-20 minute in store wait, a person in the kitchen and the cashier chased down a man who stole candy that was probably worth "fofty" cents. After hearing about the whole ordeal as the two return to finish packing up my order, we collect the order, check in at the hotel and after settling in to eat, we notice there are no utensils for this order consisting of rice, salad and hummus. When I called to pass on the missing utensil debacle and that it means we can not eat more than half of the food (which is a frustrating given the costs). -- Coupled with the lack of an apology for the chase penny candy theft that further delayed the order and the cashier's flippant response to my call about the utensils really highlighted the obvious. The night before, 3 of us had descended ravenously upon The Halal Guys. The last time we'd tried The Halal Guys was at the original NYC location, before they underwent nationwide expansion. So the next night, as we watched the parade of Bacchus and began again throwing around talk of post-parade Halal Guys, some nearby folks we'd been chatting up weighed in: "Cleo's...better than Halal Guys...same price...open all night...looks like a convenience store...". So we made our way to Cleo's only to wish later that we'd gone to The Halal Guys. All of those things that the guy at the parade said about Cleo's? All true but one. The important one. Based on research by this party of 3, Cleo's was most decidedly not better than The Halal Guys. Neither the Falafel, the Beef Schwarma, or the Chicken Kofta (all in the "wraps" section of the menu and all under $8, consistent with prices at The Halal Guys) were thought to be better than anything we'd consumed the previous night. But here's the kicker: the menu is very large, with many offerings in the $12-$20 range; perhaps those items are better than the wraps. Cleo's gets enough love that they recently opened up a real restaurant, not in a convenience store. They're clearly doing something that people like and I wish I could've experienced that something. In sticking to the wraps section of the menu we were doing our best to balance their offering with that of The Halal Guys (which may or may not be fair) and we all just thought they fell far short. Neither delicious nor outright bad, Cleo's was merely a shoulder-shrug of a meal. Next time I'm feeling ravenous after a parade I'll most likely be gracing the doors of The Halal Guys. read more

Cleo's, oh Cleo's. How do I love thee...let me count the ways. This is my go-to place for middle eastern cuisine in Nola. The meats are seasoned to perfection and are tender and tasty. The hummus is to die for and is topped with a chili sauce that I can't get enough of. I always order extra so I can put it on my meat too. Generous portion sizes. I love getting the combination shawarma. I get chicken and lamb. The storefront is always tidy and clean. You can find a lot in the store. It has a lot of grocery items and snacks. The service is pretty quick. There is another very popular middle eastern restaurant, which shall remain nameless, that is within walking distance of my job but will still pay the extra money to have Cleo's delivered for lunch.
