The Cliff Walk is highly recommended online, so I decided to get my steps in and check it out during my visit to Newport! This is such a beautiful walk. I love the ocean views and the historic mansions lining the route along the cliff.

I've been obsessed with the ocean my whole life and will jump on any chance to walk along the coast any given day. I've been here many times over the last two years but have never walked it after any snowfall. So knowing it recently snowed and that it hasn't all melted away, I immediately drove down on my first day off. I'm sure it would have been even more beautiful than it was today if I had been here just after a fresh snowfall. But it was a good glimpse of just how beautiful it could be. There were still many patches of white and the landscape was transformed by it. The cold breeze enveloped you as you walked the 3.5 miles was refreshing like chugging a cold beer on a hot summer day. It's an easy stroll even on the "rougher" terrain. Any hiking shoes would easily help you traverse the whole 3.5 miles. You get to see many of the historical and private mansions along the coast. And if you're curious to see more of them, continue onto the main road at the end of the cliff walk and see them from there (lots of information posted along the way too!) Parking during off-season is plentiful and free. Good luck during the rest of the year finding parking when crowds really pack this place...

This is a beautiful walk, about 3.5 miles long, and about 75% of it is very easy. You can see some of the famous Newport mansions including The Breakers, Marble House, and Rosecliff. There are also great views of the Atlantic. On the downside, it can be very crowded and it's fairly narrow in spots. (I was going to put in an offer on the Breakers mansion, which has 70 rooms, 48 bedrooms and 27 fireplaces but thought it might be too drafty!!!). Newport is a great place to visit, and if you arrive on a decent day, it's worthwhile to take a walk on the Cliff Walk!

When visiting Newport, I highly recommend the cliff walk. On one side are breathtaking views of the ocean, and on the other side it is lined with magnificent homes, and mansions. The paved walkway has a rocky section and even a tunnel to go through.

Good place to walk - areas that are easy for less mobile folks and areas that are a little more challenging. Beautiful throughout. Sometimes a little crowded. First-rate experience, not to be missed if you're capable of walking at all. We ubered in both times - I heard lots of grousing about parking issues from others in the area.

Tony Vanoy and I parked and walked to the overlook at 40 Steps! Noël Teel & Calliope stayed in the car because she was napping! This is located Newport Rhode Island! It's free to enjoy! Beautiful views of the Ocean with the Cliffs & Rocks jagged around the waters edge! Absolutely gorgeous! Inspiring! Makes me want to paint! To Write! To sing! This was a great way to get some exercise with a view. And it's free! It was a Monday in summer and pretty busy but still enjoyable. There's plenty of street parking, if you're not playing to go tour when of the houses. Remember to wear sunscreen and pack water and snacks, if you are going to be on the trail for a bit.

It's a must see spot for any vacation! You can walk the entire length or only walk sections. Hundreds of photo spots and places to sit and chill. It's a great workout with places to balance, do yoga, and run. I can't wait to come back and do it all over again.

We did the Cliff Walk from North Entrance at Easton Beach to the South Entrance. It took us 2.5 hours. We were not prepared (no water, no sunblock, and only one of us had proper footwear) but we did it and survived!

Life long RI-er but had never done the Cliff Walk until today. Figured the weather was warm but not hot, and it was before tourist season and/or charged parking season, so I figured it was as good a time as any. It's a great time. Incredible views of the waterfront and mansions, and other than a section where you have to walk on rocks its easily manageable. Having said that, the pamphlet about the Cliff Walk says it takes 2.5 hours to do the 3.5-mile one-way walk. I did both ways in about 1.5 hours, walking at a steady pace and stopping to take a few photos. It can be a little congested in spots, but otherwise its a banger of a way to spend a couple hours in Newport.

Let me start this review by HIGHLY RECOMMENDING Cliff Walk. The walk encompasses miles of walkways that will have the Easton Bay on one side and gorgeous mansions on the other. It's so nice, listening to the tide coming into the rocky shoreline and watching many people enjoying the Cliff Walk, as well. Please, make it a priority to revel in this well constructed section of Newport's beauty and enjoy the peacefulness of its surroundings.

If you're anywhere near Newport, don't skip The Cliff Walk. My husband and I went for a walk there, and it was absolutely beautiful. The views of the ocean are stunning -- it's the perfect spot to take pictures, relax, and enjoy the fresh air. It's not a hike, really -- more of a peaceful, scenic walk with some uneven spots here and there, but nothing too difficult. You can bring your dog, which made it even better. There's also a place nearby where you can grab something to eat and even sit for a bit with a view. It's a great way to unwind and take in the natural beauty of the area. Highly recommend if you're in town.

What a beautiful view! Its a nice scenic walk....long walk...about 3 miles. You get to see well maintain manicured lawns of the university, the breakers mansion and etc. Great for excercising and ideal when the weather is nice and sunny. Since it's by the water, you always get a nice sea breeze :0) read more

Lovely walk along the coast line. When they say it will take you 2.5 hours one way they are not kidding. Towards the southern end there are rock scrambles. When they say wear appropriate foot wear that certainly did not mean my usual walking sandals. read more

Beautiful walk. Too many people for COVID, but we went there on a Saturday, so I believe any other day would be more comfortable for us, but who knows. It's our first time in this island, so not sure how crowded it gets during pick season. read more

Everyone loves the cliff walk. Bring bottled water in the summer. Towards the end of the walk it gets rocky and you no longer have a sidewalk. It's great to sit and watch the surfers right after you walk past the breakers. read more

Amazing ! The walk has markers reading QR codes. Which is very convenient when you are interested in learning on mansions stories, the city history and to know what is has become nowadays. It took us about 4 hours to walk 1 way trip from Easton's Beach (1st Beach) till the end from where you see Bailey's Beach. Charming, family walk, refreshing. Even for a cardio walk, the Cliff Walk has won my heart. read more

Such a wonderful date to go on with your significant other. There's something about trusting them to help you climb the rocks, squeeze down tiny paths and hold hands while listening to the ocean. I'm a sucker for good scenery and the Cliff Walk heightens all of my senses. read more

The views from this walk are wonderful. Definitely worth the bit of exercise. I don't recommend running along this path. It is simply not wide enough and it ends up being annoying to both parties. I currently have an ankle injury so I wish I could have walked the whole thing but I was not able. Next time! read more

Cliff Walk is absolutely stunning. My husband and I were driving by the mansions and decided to stop by the part of Cliff Walk next to the Breakers. You can't park in that area, so we just stopped for a moment to see the Walk. It was rainy and the water was churning. And there were surfers out! We watched them for a few minutes and then drove around to another dead end street, where the Cliff Walk is more cliff than walk. We climbed some cliffs and watched the water from the tip of a cliff. It was so cool! We decided to come back a few days later when it was sunny, which was a great idea. You can see for miles, the water looks aqua blue, the mansions are gorgeous, and it was so peaceful being next to the water. We started from the 40 Steps and walked south; unfortunately we only walked for about 45 minutes before we headed back because it was very cold and the wind was causing us to freeze. It was still such a nice time and definitely my favorite part of Newport! read more

Beautiful! The views from any given spot are incredible, and the walkways and paths themselves are well groomed while allowing natural plants and landscapes to coexist. The houses/mansions were neat as well, but what I was personally impressed by most was the incredible coastline and ocean view. During the winter it gets very cold, even during the middle of the day, so bundle up before going. Tl;dr: Such a great experience! read more

The Cliff Walk is not to be missed when visiting Newport. The path gives stunning views of Easton Beach and the ocean, while also giving you amazing views of the mansions and the University. The pathway is very well maintained and had a rest-area/bathrooms right before the walk gets a bit more difficult. Especially loved the little stops in between where you can get off the path and go down stairs or hikes closer to the water. Lovely and well-done! read more

I didn't go very far on this walk, but I wanted to write a review for anyone who is interested in barefoot walking/running. I parked on Dresser Street (as a previous reviewer suggested) and walked down Seaview Ave. At the bottom of the steps and to the left of the steps, the sidewalk is baby-butt smooth. You can't go too far to the left before you hit the beginning of the trail and have to turn back. To the right of the steps, it turns into an Asphalt-ish surface (little stones embedded in it) but it's still pretty smooth (I'm talking barefeet-smooth, if you're wearing shoes, you probably won't even notice the surface changes). I went out about half a mile and turned back with no problems on my feet. I have only been barefooting for a few weeks, so surface is very important to me! The only issue is that the path is not very wide and people tend to walk side by side, so if you're trying to run, be prepared to jump into the hedges and run through the mud - which feels awesome on barefeet, so that was an unexpected plus ;) If you're a serious runner, with a time/pace/distance goal, I'd skip this due to the crowds. If you want to run for fun, this is a great place to do so! read more

We stopped in Newport on our way home from Boston to check out the mansions, and weren't disappointed! However, we soon realized that it was not an easy task to get from the Cliff Walk to a specific mansion, and there are little directions to help you. Also, a portion of the walk is ungated and involves walking across large, flat rocks, so wear sneakers (NOT wedges like I did...dumb.) Bring your own water or snacks, as the walk can be lengthy if you choose and there are no places to buy food or drink along the way. I noticed also that from the walk, you don't have a great view of the mansions, and from the mansions you don't have a great view of the cliff walk. I would recommend allowing a whole day to explore the cliff walk and mansions, as we only planned on spending a few hours there and definitely were hungry for more conspicuous consumption! read more

The Cliff Walk is AMAZING!!! It is free and fun for all ages. It is unlike anything I've ever seen in the U.S. You are able to see the famous Vanderbilt mansions from a point on the walk and it feels like you're almost walking on water, so beautiful! read more

My daughters and I had a wonderful time on the cliff walk yesterday! The weather was amazing and with so much open space, it was busy, but did not seem terribly crowded. We intended to hike the entire thing, but time got away from us and we had to cut short and head back to the car. We are planning on heading back to do it again next week, but will definitely plan for more time. We'll also be sure to put more bottles of water in our back pack, as we quickly realized we didn't take enough out with us this time. We left our mark on the trail by adding to the stacked rock towers on one of the cliffs, and enjoyed finding the mark left behind by some other hikers. Whoever you are, if you find this review, your Rock Monster was so cute! read more

We came here and were just so blown away by the great atmosphere and the equally great people that were here admiring the completely amazing properties that line the Newport area. We walked a few miles of the shore and were just in awe with what was seen. This is spectacular and an important walk as well. read more

breathtaking views! Took a little detour off the walking trail and went down by the rocks where my friends and I ended up spending some time just looking at different rocks and enjoying the sunshine! The mansions were such a beautiful sight to see. read more

The cliff walk is a lovely place to go if you are visiting Newport. There is a lot of tourist traffic, runners, dogs, Salve students, etc. that come for a stroll. It doesn't cost anything to go to the cliff walk and there are beautiful views of the ocean. There are several places to park to get to the cliff walk too (make sure you don't need to pay for parking). On one end is Memorial Drive and the other is rejects beach. If you are coming to Newport for the first time, this is definitely a place to go. As you walk, you will see several mansions (including some that are used by Salve Regina). You can also get to the Breakers from the cliff walk (you will need to walk to Ochre Point Ave, but it is right there). read more

I visited here over Thanksgiving weekend and there was still a crowd. You have to get here early to snatch a parking space or just wait for someone to pull out. Thanks to Yelp reviewers who posted where to find parking since there were no signs for Cliff Walk parking. We parked at the end of Narragansett Ave. It's a nice place to start since 40 Steps is there. You can walk down the steps and see the waves up close. If you turn right and go north towards the Breakers, then you will have a nice short walk along the cliff and a ledge right next to the rocky beach with a little lighthouse. Very picturesque and perfect spot for photography enthusiasts. You just have to get there at the right time so the sun doesn't wash out everything. Plus, you can get a nice view of the Breakers from behind. We saw some people leave the mansions so this is the perfect place to do some sightseeing if you have time. read more

A park with a…read morewindmill Wind turbines are popping up all over Rhode Island. A nice and efficient way of taking advantage of the constant wind coming off of Narragansett Bay. Even though the technology has greatly improved over the years and centuries, the idea is hardly new. Wind power has been used in New England for a long time and was frequently used to power the old grist mills. A few of the old windmills managed to survive and Paradise Park has one of the finest examples still around. The mill was built back in 1810 and was used to grind corn and is a great example of a smock mill that has numerous sloped sides. It originally had four vanes but was increased to eight over the years to improve efficiency. The mill stood a bit further north in Portsmouth but was restored and moved to Paradise Park in 1990. The mill is open one day a year in Sept but can be seen all year long in the park. The rest of Paradise Park is pleasant, with a few short hiking trails and benches and places to sit and relax. Some concerts are held here in the summer and the historical society is right next door. There are a lot of parks in Rhode Island and quite a few windmills but this is the only windmill in a park that I know of. A lovely place to see a part of the past that is quickly becoming the vision of the future.

The weather was…read morebeyond unsafe--torrential rain, frequent lightning, thunder, gale-force winds, flooding, and standing water. Under those conditions, the event should have been canceled or rescheduled. Instead, guests were expected to drive through dangerous weather and then repeatedly walk between buildings on uneven terrain with some individuals carrying umbrellas, which only increased the risk during an active lightning storm. The conditions made the investigation itself nearly impossible. Because of the weather, we were only able to experience a fraction of what was advertised--probably around 25% of the normal investigation. We spent much of the evening trying to avoid the elements instead of enjoying the experience we paid for. I was also disappointed with the investigation methods. At one point, the investigator placed nearly every piece of paranormal equipment together on and around a staircase within inches of one another. Anyone with experience in paranormal investigating knows that equipment should be spaced apart to avoid interference. Unsurprisingly, one device began going off repeatedly, and it was suggested this was paranormal activity. However, it appeared much more likely that the equipment was simply interfering with itself, making the results unreliable. The biggest issue, however, was safety. The walkways were soaked, slippery, uneven, and covered with large puddles. Wind-driven rain made visibility difficult, and the constant lightning created an unnecessary risk. We returned home completely soaked to the bone (our own personal paranormal equipment that we bought with us was also soaked) from what felt like a hazardous trip both to and from the event. We genuinely questioned whether we should have been on the road at all. No event is worth risking people's safety. A reputable organization should know when conditions have crossed the line from inconvenient to dangerous and make the decision to cancel or reschedule. Instead, it felt like the priority was avoiding refunds rather than protecting guests. This was, without question, one of the most disappointing and unsafe event experiences I've ever had, and I would not recommend it based on how the situation was handled.

The cliff walk is a 3.5 mile hiking trail. It's tagged as easy but I would tag as moderate, as there are some parts where you have to climb boulders and can be dangerous at night or rain. It took around three hours for us since we kept stopping for pictures, and you pass by all the famous mansions and get to glimpse their backyard. If you don't want to hike back there is a trolley around Marble House. It was very beautiful and healthy and relaxing way to spend the day- highly recommend. read more

We decided to take a short walk along the Cliff Walk over the weekend, despite the less-than-ideal weather. The usual starting point was closed due to a detour, but we followed the signs and found the "new" starting point. Fortunately, with the cloudy weather, parking was easy to find.
