Let's start by admitting that I've been a loyal customer for probably close to 20 years. Cliff's isn't gourmet hamburgers by any means--it's what the name says: old-fashioned hamburgers prepared on a flat grill. The grease factor is very high (great for a hangover, BTW), the salad fixins (lettuce, tomato, etc.) are always fresh and plentiful, and the burgers are not at all skimpy. Each table (and the counter) has ketchup, two kinds of hot sauce, and A-1, so if you want to doctor up the taste, it's not a problem. My personal favorite is the Murphy Burger, although I don't order cheese on my burgers. Ordinarily, it's the burger with cheddar, hickory sauce, carmelized onions and bacon. Even without cheese, it's fantastic! Cliff's offers a huge selection of burger combos, as well as chicken sandwiches, Philly cheese steak sandwiches, and a few others. They also do salads, if you go with a conscientious diner. Their fries are served in huge portions (enough for two adults), and are always thick, hot and crunchy, as they're finished off to order. And they also do a pretty fair breakfast, as well. They compete reasonably well vs. Fountainview Cafe, which is only about 50 yards away. If you happen to be drinking at Ron's Pub, a couple of doors down, they'll actually deliver your order there, even though they sell a decent variety of beers at Cliff's. Prices are reasonable--roughly $10 for a burger, fries and iced tea. read more

I feel silly. I went here for the first time, and what did I order? A hamburger? NO. I ordered their philly cheesesteak sammy. And it was DELICIOUS! This place has become my Saturday staple. I usually stop in before the darts tourney at Ron's and get my grub on. They have a wall full of options and it is counter service--fast counter service. They are curt, but they get the job done. The restaurant is clean and almost always empty. Plus, they deliver next door which is nice. The burgers, which is what they're famous for, are pretty good. I tend to go with bacon every chance I get and it is not something to skip. Simple, large, and delicious. They're the kind of burgers that remind you of summertime barbecues in the neighborhood. Last week, I had the frito pie which was okay--nothing spectacular. The fries are always nice and crisp, the salads are fine, and the other sandwiches I've had here have been pretty well made. They do have a pretty extensive menu, but usually I'm a sucker for a burger or something smothered in cheese. Next on the list to check out is the cheese fries. Yum! There is nothing life changing about Cliff's, but it is a dependable standby for good, greasy food. They do have beer and wine available and everything is decently priced. Cliff's is the kind of local, neighborhood burger joint that I love. Little hole in the wall, staff that's been there forever, small outdoor seating area that's great for a nice day. Problem is, the burgers are average. My favorite at Cliff's is the Murphy Burger, which is a traditional cheeseburger with BBQ sauce. The BBQ sauce is a good idea at Cliff's, because the machine-formed patty is fairly flavorless on its own. The onions used are also very mild, and contributes to the below-average rating. But heck, if you love bland food, Cliff's may be your idea of burger heaven. It's just not mine. read more

This is the kind of neighborhood joint that you're supposed to love. It's cozy and inviting, with counter service and a visible short-order cook that's quick on the draw. But where charm succeeds, taste fails. Chalk one up for the Smashburger chains of the world; they may not be the most homey, but they make the best burgers. Despite the awesome decor, Cliff's falls far short on the actual burger-making part. The fries are think and hearty, but lack any semblance of taste. I made plentiful use of the ketchup. The burger itself looks like a pre-made frozen patty from Whataburger. Whataburger, however, does an excellent job of spicing up the sandwich with plenty of condiments and accoutrements. Not so at Cliff's. I went with the chili-cheddar burger, and guess what, I still had to use ketchup to draw some taste. The onions were undercooked, neither crunchy nor caramelized enough. And the chili, combined with the patty, actually tasted like beef overkill. I'm thinking I just ordered the wrong burger. I also should have gone with the delicious-looking onion rings instead of the fries. As mentioned, the place looks awesome and judging from Yelp reviews, seems like a really great pre-bar snack. I love the Cliff's Burger with cheddar cheese all wrapped up in paper like a little present. It is my favorite non fast food burger place. As for everything else on the menu - I haven't tried much if anything else although I will say I don't like their fries. Seating can be troublesome when they are busy and I more often than not will get it to go. Service is always great and the faces are always familiar. I ordered lunch from here yesterday - just couldn't take another cold sandwich..... I decided on the patty melt an fries. Since the nearby Southwell's is damaged, this joint is overflowing with additional business, but they are cranking out orders like nobody's business. Anyhoo - I got back to my office to eat and the sandwich was crammed into a little container (still eats the same) and while it was good, I can't say I was amazed. The fries are hand cut and you better eat them fresh and hot because they do not do well cold or reheated. Ate here twice in one week cause it was so nice. Came with work colleagues based on a recommendation from my mom. Got a bacon cheeseburger and it was huge! They put so many onions and lettuce and tomatoes. I could pretend I was being healthy as I ate the bacon! The manager guy was nice and friendly. Chatty to a comfortable point. Decided to come back with my husband on the weekend. This time I ordered the greek salad (manager said it was the best selling salad on the menu) and the husband got the bacon cheeseburger. He was a little disappointed because things were falling out of the burger because it was so big. He even had to use a fork at the end. But my salad tasted great. the chicken was nicely flavored. The only thing is I didn't know it had olives so I had to take them out. The manager guy remembered me (duh...I was there 3 days before) and was again friendly. Also the lady who took our order was funny cause she carded my husband even though he is 29. All in all a very nice place. It's right down the street from where I'm working for the month. Grubhub gone wrong, placed meal order under ASAP on website, we were less than 10 minutes away. Received confirmation said expected done in 20-40 minutes, so I called Grubhub about 7:15 PM and said we were already (having waited 10-15 minutes in parking lot) outside the restaurant waiting. The GRUBHUB rep said we would have to wait at least 20 more minutes, I waited 15 (total 40 minutes wait time) and went in the restaurant. The food had been ready and was already a little cold. Burger was still tasty, fries were cold salad came without utensils. Will think twice before I order thru Grubhub! read more
