I had opted for a beef burger with a side of chili cheese tater tots to share. The burger is quite large and filled generously with whatever add-ins you check off so it was very filling for me. I went with two 2oz patties, but considering the size, I'd opt for a single 2 oz patty if I go back. I was extremely excited to give this place a shot and, after failing to try it about a month ago due to them being out of falafel patties, I finally got to try it this past weekend and honestly I was very much underwhelmed (I even called before going to make sure they hadn't run out of falafel patties this time). To start off with a positive, I thought the falafel patty had a really great taste and was absolutely the highlight of the burger. But outside of that the burger and the toppings I ordered just didn't work as well as I would've liked. I ordered my burger with mushrooms and sauteed onions, both toppings I know I absolutely love from making burgers at home and from other spots, but neither added much. At first I was worried that the falafel was overpowering them both but upon eating them by themselves they just lacked taste. We also got the scallion aioli on the burger and I never got a hint of it at any point. All in all, the burger was very much mediocre outside of the patty. We also got fries with the burger and while they absolutely had some potential they were extremely over seasoned. Any appreciation for the seasonings in a vacuum was immediately overshadowed by how salty they were. We also ordered the Sambal Mayo as a dipping sauce and while it did help subdue the insane salt level and overall tasted quite good, upon writing this review I found out by looking at their online menu that it contained some amount of shrimp. This information is nowhere to be seen on the ordering slip and wasn't mentioned when I handed it over to the person working at the cash register. And while I definitely accept some level of responsibility for not doing my due diligence and asking or letting them know of my dietary restrictions, it's still an extremely frustrating thing to have happen as both a vegetarian and someone with a mild shellfish allergy. Again, I am learning. I ordered grilled chicken, but at the counter, a very nice person, Eric, told me they were out of grilled chicken and had fried chicken available. They'll give you a buzzer after you go to the cashier/pay/order and you wait til your buzzer rings and bam you grab your food. The biggest complaint was that the restaurant was cloyingly hot and humid, almost equivalent to temperature to the Houston summer outside. The burger is absolutely delicious. Juicy, tender, great flavor. The sweet sourdough is thick but compliments the burger well. The sauce is a unique taste. The curly fries are crispy and the spam and kimchi on top add a nice mix of spice and salt. The black sesame milkshake was not bad. It starts initially bland and then the black sesame flavor starts to become more prominent as you drink it, until it becomes nearly overpowering by the time you finish it. We waited a little over 30 minutes to order, and another 10-15 minutes for our food. The line moves efficiently. You fill out a color-coded clipboard based on what item you want to order (burger, hot dog, fish, etc). Then you can customize your burger as you wish! I got a double 2 oz burger with sourdough buns. Added on sautéed mushrooms and onion strings (essentially fried onion - looking back I would have gotten sautéed onions instead) for $1 each. I also got scallion aioli (on the bun) and sambal mayo (on the side for an extra 50 cents). The rest of the toppings were free! The burger was certainly delicious but not life changing. I was hoping to like it more than I did. I found it to be dry and a little lacking in flavor, though that could be user error. I wouldn't wait 45 minutes for it again, but I would definitely give it another shot on a less busy day. They allow for you to fill out these order sheets for your order. However when you get to the counter you are still telling them you order so I don't understand the papers. My only nitpick is the response to my burger missing a patty, since I ordered a double. I had already taken 2 bites and realized it when I saw my burger was the same thickness as my girlfriend's single, and brought it up. The guy at the counter offered to either cook up a new patty, or refund and charge me for the single. I ended up asking for a new patty, though it took a little longer than I would've expected so the rest of the burger was lukewarm by then. Also, how do you add a patty to a partially-eaten burger and make it 'balanced' in terms of each bite? I'm not about to eat a solitary patty by itself. I think the right call would've been a completely new double-patty, or offer just a single-patty burger that way it's not just a patty. Burger Chan had been on my radar for over a year. Being close to my dad's place, we'd talked about going a bunch of times--but with their 3 PM closing time, it was tough to make it work. My dad and I made a pact: neither of us would go without the other, since we'd hyped it up so much! Finally, one Saturday afternoon, we made it out as a family. The place was packed! The line took about 20 minutes, which wasn't too bad-- it was good to see how popular they were! To help pass the time, they had a riddle, which my sister-in-law surprisingly solved quite fast! We thought she'd win a drink, but it turned out to just be a small candy. I loved the ordering process of color-coded clipboards for each protein where you just check off your toppings to build your burger. When you reach the cashier, they confirm your choices verbally. I ordered two burgers to try different combinations, both with a 5-ounce patty--one on a sweet sourdough bun and the other on brioche. Both buns were delicious! I added sautéed onions, mushrooms, and charred jalapeños as toppings, which were all fantastic. The jalapeños had great flavor, but I wish they were cut smaller for easier bites. I went with two sauces: scallion aioli, which was rich and delicious, and sambal mayo, which was super spicy but so addictive! I'm a sauce girl for sure. The biggest downside was the wait for our food. While I expected a wait to order, it took over 30 minutes to get our burgers. I understand weekends can be busy, but a long wait for burgers is a tough one to understand. I'm sure weekdays are better, but everyone deserves a good burger on a Saturday, as well! read more

This is one of my all time favorite burger places! Located in the Galleria area, I love going to burger-chan when I'm craving a solid burger! It's a great restaurant for friends and family and I love the unique toppings (including some Asian inspired) to add to the burger. Some of my favorite toppings include the sautéed mushrooms and the crispy onions! The cooks are very generous with the toppings and the burger pairs so well with their scallion aioli. For sides, I always go with their tater tots with spice as the seasoning complements the tots well. The service is always great and you can tell that the staff work well together. Great place for lunch, and the restaurant cutely decorated with fun activities for children and adults. They even serve alcohol such as beer, or milkshakes and other non alcoholic beverages I can't wait to see how else the restaurant will develop in the future! read more

Came in for lunch on a Wednesday, fairly empty at first but filled up quick. Food 4.5/5:Ordered a triple smash burger with cheddar, onion, mushroom, lettuce, tomato and pickle, a chicken sandwich, as well as the curly and sweet potato fries and a black sesame milk shake. Everything was great except the chicken sandwhich was a bit bland. We came here before and the fish burger was excellent! I raved to a relative from out of town so we went here today. The food was not delicious this time around! The fish patty was thinner than before, dry, and a bit burnt. It was also a different color on the inside and appeared to be older and didn't have that fresh fish taste as before. The fish patty was oily and salty. On top of that the chili cheese fries were also really salty. It looked like they had seasoned the fries with Cajun seasoning and then added the chili, but the chili must've been sitting there and reducing over heat because it was also salty and made the fries exceptionally salty. read more

I have come here four times since they've opened. The staff is always very kind, not really welcoming upon entry or exit, but whenever I've asked a question theyve answered kindly and patiently. Many businesses make consumers feel like burdens, not here. Very pleasant, if they are approached. The layout is clean and cool branding with the chalkboards, long wooden tables and benches, riddles and puzzles on the boards, and clip boards and pen wall to write out your order. Theres a community sense from the layout of the restaurant. There are also some bench tables outside as well. I have only gotten the large patty double cheeseburger (lettuce tomatoes pickle and onion on sourdough), curly fries, and fish sandwich (on brioche with coleslaw). Everything every time was excellent. I like that there are clip boards categorized by beef, fish, falafel, chicken, and I think hotdogs. You, the consumer, grab a clipboard and a pen provided by the business and mark your sides, bread if any, toppings, sauces...then you take it up to the cashier. I like being able to curate my own burger like that. The takeout is packaged in Chinese food style boxes that you can flatten out into a plate. Keep the product warm. They wrap the burger too, that minimized the heat sweating against the burger. Mine get soggy a little by the time I get home 8minutes away. So I'm not sure what can help that. But it's not too bad. Could be soughdough not holding up moisture well. Idk. Today, I got a double cheeseburger same as described above with curly fries. My total was $20.xx. The scallion garlic aoili sauce is soooo good that I want to buy a bottle but I'm too ashamed to ask!! I don't think they sell it that way. It's really great and I believe it's made in house. They also have kimchi and other tasty in-house toppings. This far, in my experience they're products are consistent. Burger-Chan has been on the top of my list of restaurants to check out for a while because I've seen it on Yelp's Top 100 Places to Eat year after year. I don't go to Houston much, so I have to plan my food stops when I do. That being said, I'm glad I finally checked out Burger-Chan this time. Food: The burgers were worth the hype. I love that they use quality ingredients, and the sauces are made in-house. I also love that I can select as many free toppings as I want, but next time I go, I will not add as many because there was too much in my burger. I know it was my choice, so I need to remember that less is more. Service: When I walked in, there were clipboards with sheets of paper to mark on to order with. The process can be a little overwhelming, especially since I've never been before, but overall, the it was pretty straightforward. Once I filled out the sheet, I took it to the front counter and handed it to the person to ring up the order. She was still able to give me some recommendations since it was my first time going, which was nice. I was handed a buzzer afterward so they could buzz me when the food was ready. It didn't take long for the food to come out, which was nice. Ambiance: The decor was simple but unique. I enjoyed reading the quotes on the wall. Other than that, there are a good number of seats inside. Overall, I enjoyed my burger from here. I recommend checking it out, as it's not your typical burger shop. read more

This was a DELICIOUS MEAL!! I popped in to Burger Chan because I was just in the area and hungry and almost went somewhere else. That other place may have been great but I'm so glad that I went here instead of there. I can say the only hard part about eating here was spending my money lol but for what I got even that actually isn't bad. This is a spot that had been on my to try list and is now on my to eat when close list! Off the bat the place has a litany of cool vibes going on. The ordering has multiple clipboard to grab to fill out your order and they are color coordinated for different meal options so that alone is a cool touch. I had to restrain myself from ordering a too much because I came for a burger but wanted a hot dog too lol. They have coloring pages all around that appear to have been done by children which is cool. They also have nice art and some chalkboard columns that they put daily quotes, daily puzzles and their VIP customer list. Now to my stomach experience! I got a Double 5oz Burger, with Cheddar Cheese, a Fried Egg, Sauteed Onions, Sauteed Mushrooms, Lettuce, Pickles, Raw Onions, Pickled Jalapenos....Ketchup & Mustard lol. I had the Scallion Aioli and Sambol Mayo on the side for sauces. And I got the Curly Fries and Fried Cheese Curds as sides. I said a lot of things but enjoyed them all! The burger was cooked well and well seasoned. Every topping I put on it but I was overzealous because it was hard to keep it all on. The pickles, jalapenos and mushrooms were all cut pretty big and very flavorful. The pickles may have been my favorite part and that's no diss to the burger, they were just good pickles. The curly fries were solid fries and so were the cheese curds, but the burger was so filling that the curds should've been saved for my next visit. They also offer a solid lemonade to drink. It's hard to fully express my appreciation for burger-chan (#1) into words, but for my 400th review in Houston, it appears I must. Willet and Diane, the husband and wife duo have taken a non-conventional approach to casual dining and in doing so, have amassed quite the reputation and have become one of (if not *the*) city's most beloved burger spots. Formally Kuma Burgers from back in the day, their transition from their previous location in Greenway to their current Galleria locale has been well received by their dedicated local following. Their limited hours means the window is short, resulting in practically daily lines during their uber popular lunch service. They close at 3pm, so get there plenty early for food guarantees and a seat. The format (#2) is genius: find a mini clipboard that is color coded (based on the food item) and customize it by noting what is / isn't wanted. I'm ordering a minimum of two 5oz patties and am forever tempted with the add-ons, including cheese, bacon, a fried egg, slabs of spam, avocado, and an endless barrage of sauces that include scallion aioli and sambal mayo. The end result is a spendy burger that is of my doing. A delicious doing. I've yet to have a bad meal here. I consider myself fortunate to have tried a number of items, from different burger combinations to burger alternatives such as their highly underrated falafel burger and panko breaded mahi mahi fish sandwiches. I've also enjoyed their tater tots, fried cheese curds, sweet potato + regular fries, and even the curly fries. While I don't usually indulge in too many drinks, I have to say they have one of the coolest water machines out there. It spits out ice perfectly and the water is ice cold. I've also tried some of their indulgent shakes, including strawberry, corn and black sesame. There is also a robust list of alcoholic beverages in the form of craft beer for adults who want a little buzz with their burger. Lastly, their staff gets some major kudos. While Diane handles the register and Willet oversees the kitchen, the rest of their young staff is hustling away at getting food out and keeping the place in pristine condition. They really do an excellent job at making the dream work with some quality team work. I appreciate their efforts and love their approach to community. They are often participating in collaborations with others in the food space and coming up with interesting seasonal, experimental items, and even daily riddles to keep customers engaged.
