Upon entering the little shop, I was greeted with smiles and welcomes, and some conversation. Both the staff there and the customers were very friendly. They all made you feel welcomed. I asked for a warm chocolate color and I got just that. The color was beautiful. I also had my hair shoulder length and asked for a pixie cut and I received it. My hair is very thin and I had a lot of breakage, but after the cut and color, I was very happy with it. I will be coming back to this little shop again. read more

So a stylist friend recommended a particular brand to turn my dishwater blond hair BRIGHT PINK. Problem was, said stylist friend lives out of state, so I turned to the product website to find a stylist. I found Vickie @ Clip Art, and I am SO GLAD I did!!! The salon was clean and welcoming. I'm a fan of the North Park area, and there is plenty of street parking in the middle of a week day. Vickie was friendly and knowledgeable and really excited to cut off a LOT of my hair and do such a fun color. She was very open with what she was doing, and whether I was okay with it, checking length before cutting it off (before and after pics are in the gallery). She was also very attentive to my comfort level which I appreciated. I've been scalded and frozen by shampoos before. Not so with Vickie! Okay, so...I have been going to Tina for years. Since she was down at Graffiti's in the Mission Valley. I followed her to Kensington and then again, when she went across the street to her own store. I just love it there. Everytime I come in, its like going to see friends and chat. Except...you get a great hair cut and color at the same time. Now, I see Tina so, I know she may be hard to see cause she is in demand. But, I would definately go see her. I haven't seen the other girls...Well, I have seen Lelanie too. So, I take that back. Lelanie gives a great massage when she washes your hair. Anyway...you know how it is..when you go see someone you absolutely love, you just cannot go elsewhere. So, that is why I always stick with Tina. She did my hair for my wedding and I think she still keeps a photo of how she did it. It turned out so nice! I lived in Virginia for two years also...and sometimes, I had to fly back to San Diego just to get my hair done because I just couldn't get the color the way I wanted it and Tina is an expert in color. I came across this salon when I googled best curly hair stylists in SD. I reviewed the other yelpers pics and saw what a great job Vickie had done. I got her number and texted her, she made time for me that very day! I thought that was so cool, the appt was at 8:15 on a Friday night. I asked if that wasn't too late and she told me she leaves when the work is done. Such a great attitude to have. Now down to my cut I was SOOOOO scared to cut my hair short and get rid of my bun but she made me feel very comfortable and did a really nice job. I will mos def be going back. She also referred me to Ulta for great hair products, (and they smell good too), unlike other salons that scam you into buying their products and rip you off. As soon as I sat down, I felt very comfortable and I knew I could trust Queena. That is a huge compliment because I've felt scared and anxious with past stylists. The next day after I had my hair styled, Queena colored my hair and did a remarkable job that complimented the cut. She actually saved my hair from years of dyeing and other hair abuse; and ultimately made it look a lot healthier. =) Anytime you have someone else doing a service on you whether its hair, nails, makeup, surgery, I believe that you should find the best that's out there, and of course what fits your budget. Love love love this place! The ladies who work there are amazing! Vicki did my hair and she was amazing. She took her time and listened to what I wanted and also had her own ideas in the end my hair came out awesome! I knew I could trust her to just let her do her thing. I wanted my hair to be a pastel pink but after trying a few times and different ways my hair would just not lift to the light blonde that we needed to do it and that was in no way Vickis fault. If you aren't happy with your hair, you shouldn't be reading this, you should be scheduling an appointment with Queena. Right now! Initially I scheduled an appointment with Queena because I heard hair was her passion in life, her true calling. I was in the midst of a career crisis myself, and I knew that if you do what you love, you will excel at it. Queena is practicing her calling. When she works, she even makes it look effortless! Standing on her feet working on hair if fun for her! Not only has she "coached" me in hair care, but I really appreciate her professionalism. I have had pretty much every color and every style you can imagine. And I'll admit that I have been one of those people that go to super cuts ( eeek!) and for the longest time I dyed my own hair. Based on yelp review I went to Queena a few months ago. The worst that could happen is that I over pd for another haircut in SD that I don't like. On the contrary, Queena's price was extremely reasonable compared to what I was paying in La Jolla. I got a haircut from a stylist that used a method I'd never seen before. She never once touched scissors--she used an electric clipper to cut my shoulder-length hair! I was VERY nervous about this when she first told me about it, but the cut turned out fine! I guess it makes sense--what does it matter if someone uses scissors or an electric cutter--it does the same thing. However, my cut is rather simple, like a bob without much layering, so if you have a more complicated cut I'm not sure how well this would work. Before coming here, I would recommend asking how the stylist will cut your hair in case you are worried about the electric clipper thing. But have a little faith, because mine turned out fine. :) read more

I texted her around noon and told her I was looking for a hair cut THAT SAME NIGHT and she easily accommodated me. She works independently so it's nice being able to text the stylist directly instead of booking with a receptionist months ahead of time. I got there and she cut my hair nicely, which I expected because I wasn't looking for anything too fancy, but what REALLY earned this 5 star rating was that after she cut my hair she began to TEACH ME how to reproduce the hair style at home. I have been to tons of salons that serve me a margarita/corona/wine, do my hair, then I'm heading home clueless how to look this good again. I've been a Clip Art fan since it was founded a few years ago now. I was lucky to find Leilani pretty soon after I moved to San Diego, and she has always done a FANTASTIC job on my hair! She will always work within the type of color and cut that I want, and the one time that it didn't come out right (it was a red coloring I was testing out) she let me come back to get it redone for free! She's just started doing Brazilian blowouts and I'm considering trying that out too.
