I came across Kay's salon through a Yelp search, and from seeing the good ratings, I thought my mom would like getting her haircut done by Kay. My mom is a creature of habit, so going to a different stylist is already a big deal for her! She loved the haircut, and was specific about what she wanted (she has short hair, but wanted volume at the top/roots). Kay was easy-going and very fun/easy to converse with! She also sent a video with directions on how to get to her studio, as it is part of the bottom floor of a business building. I would have gotten lost without the directions! In all honesty, the service and communication were exceptional from the start of setting an appointment to the result of the haircut. I came in here today for a texture mullet + platinum gray highlights. I thought it would be an amazing combination, and Kay did it really well. This is probably my best cut yet that I have seen. Besides the amazing service, Kay was able to recommend ways to maintain the color and style my hair like how it was intended. The location is right off of Mission Valley, and it was fairly easy to get here. Parking is a bit tight, but probably because it was on a weekday. I had a disappointing experience Kay at this salon and felt compelled to share my concerns. From the start, the service lacked attention to detail. My face was stained with dye, and the final color was nothing like what we had discussed--it was unflattering and completely missed the mark. There was little consultation or clear explanation of the process, and the stylist seemed distracted and rushed, even spending time on the phone during my appointment. Despite specifically asking for a blowout, my hair was left unstyled, which felt like another oversight. The highlights ended up looking patchy with poorly blended sections and visible streaks. The color application technique seemed off, especially with the toner, which only made the final look worse. I showed inspiration photos and was assured my desired result could be achieved in one session, but the result was far from it. To make matters worse, when I reached out to Kay to discuss my dissatisfaction, I found the response defensive and dismissive, which only added to my frustration. I'm now having to seek help from another stylist to correct the damage done to my hair. For reference, my entire appointment lasted less than 2 hours that included the consultation, root touch up, highlight, toner, cut, and dry which is not enough time for my hair as I have long thick hair. She provided great service from the booking through the completion of my cut and color. I asked her to keep my hair as long as possible while cutting in layers and that's exactly what she did. These pics don't do as much justice to the color as I think they should - her brush technique is very smooth and fine, and the brunette color is rich and very dimensional. This is a long overdue review, my experience occurred about a year or two now? And I'm only writing this review because I've recently got my haircut from another business, and they delivered my expectations flawlessly AND the pricing was so affordable! I've gone to Kay twice, the first time I thought it was a good experience and I appreciated the cut. It was a simple cut, nothing special at all. Then the 2nd time I visited her, I also brought my mom along for us to get our haircut. I also requested her to curl my hair as I had plans later that day. She is nice but idk what occurred during my 2nd visit, but she kept going back and forth from her phone to styling my hair? I didn't know how to bring it up at that time but my mom and I were both bothered. I paid in full and tipped too much honestly. The cuts that she gave me and my mom were simple as we both have thin and fine hair, and the curls she gave me were mid even more so for the price that she charged us. It is my fault for not saying anything at the time, but the pacing from styling my hair and texting on her phone was just so plain stupid. She didn't just do it once or twice. I also read another review of someone explaining the same problem of her being on the phone. After I visited a new business, I thought back to my experience with her and I grew so disappointed and upset. I found Kay on Yelp initially she was super responsive and quick. I got my hair cut with bangs and he did an amazing job! I've been trying wanting to try out blonde for a while now and saw she had some nice blonde transformations so I booked with her to do a balayage. I was a little scared to commit to the full blonde so opted for something more blended. She showed me how light my hair would get when I got my hair cut to test it out. She was very transparent with me that since I dyed my hair previously some parts wouldn't come out as blonde. She did such a great job it looks so blended and nice!! Having had balayage done about a month ago at another salon, which had sorta blended into a single color, I was pretty disappointed with how my hair looked. Ladies know, getting your hair done is not cheap. Then comes Kay, who legit performed a miracle... and transformed my lackluster hair into something out of magazine! Right off the bat, Kay was super easy to communicate with via text -- friendly and very responsive. Being a first timer, she even sent photos of what the building looked like from the outside and pictures of her suite, as well. (FYI it's through the doors on your left when you enter the building, first floor. Also, I love that there's a ton of free parking out front!) I didn't exactly know what I wanted, but I knew I definitely wanted more contrast and ashy blonde added to my previous "balayage". And really, that's all I needed to say for Kay to work her magic. i debated posting this review but decided that i wish i saw similar reviews - especially since choosing who does your hair is so important! i reached out to kay through yelp - she responded so quickly, she was very nice and was able to fit me in that weekend, which i was so thankful of! she didnt ask for pictures of my hair currently or for any hair inspiration pictures but i did let her know i wanted a balayage + cut. i also let her know that i previously bleached hair that was outgrown and wanted a touch up. im attaching her price list (since i couldnt find them anywhere before) i had my appointment at 4:30 since i work full time. i showed her my inspiration picture and asked if she could do it and she said yes. so then i decided to trust the process. (since who i am to criticize her process?? LOL) i was out by 7ish and needless to say was not very happy with the results. i told her that i wish it was lighter, since i wanted it to be BLONDE BLONDE. but she told me that "my hair was too damaged and there was no way it could get so light without breaking" which i knew was not true... but again i second guessed myself bc she is the professional. she also said that it was because of the shampoo i use which i also thought was kind of weird.. at the end of it, my hair was purple (bc of the toner) and not as light as i wanted. i left, trying to convince myself that i liked my hair. i paid $350 and also tipped for context.. so a total of $450 kay was nice and easy to talk to but i just wish she was more honest with me with whether or not my inspiration hair wouldve been possible before we started. it felt rushed.. i ended up getting a second opinion the next day and the other hair stylist actually let me know my hair was healthy and i got my hair redone. i am now the blonde i want to be :') also attaching pics of my before, inspiration i showed and what my hair looked like after. read more
