Very disappointing experience. I had made up my mind what I wanted and decided to purchase from Clive based on reports of good customer service. My previous espresso machine gave me 9 yrs of consistent great tasting lattes which were better than any of my local to me coffee shops. I was talked out of my decision by the sales person over the phone to equipment that they recommended. I spent over $3,000 dollars and in almost a year I have had perhaps 2 lattes that were good, not great. I have kept meticulous notes on settings (almost a notebook full). I have called them and also wrote a review explaining my difficulties on their website which they did not publish which explains why their reviews on their website are so positive. They choose to only publish good ones. I will say that the Profitec Move looks good sitting on the counter but for me that is the only positive. I also bought the Eureka grinder. Hands down I have never made such a costly mistake. I am retired and I saved for 2 yrs for this purchase and really cannot afford to buy something else. I can't in good conscience sell this equipment to someone else (I have not idea who would want it). I do not recommend Clive Coffee or this equipment. read more

WARNING: Unfortunately I hate to give what seems like a good coffee shop a poor rating, but their poor customer service and very condescending attitude is forcing me to warn other customers to stay away from this place. Although if you are handy with carpentry, the fix is easy, I don't think they should be charging $700 for a product claiming to be custom that clearly is not. I bought custom wood panels for my ECM Synkronika machine for $700-and note this only pays for two small walnut panels about 1'x1'. There were two significant carpentry design problems with them: A. The metal feet that were screwed into the wood panels were mis-measured, and I had to modify the metal and wood to make them fit. Although I did craft a solution to resolve this, for $700, they really need to double check their measurements. This is essential for any carpenter: measure twice, cut once. B. They poorly designed the left wood panel because it pushes hard against the pump. Their response to me was "it doesn't push up against the pump." (Unbelievable as this customer svc rep calls himself, literally a "coffee expert!!") If they were paying attention to the design, they would have noticed that the original steel panels are 1/2" narrower, which allows them to NOT hit the pump. These wood panels are very thick, and they clearly push the pump at a hard angle. To fix this, you need to chisel out a 5"x6" square area by hand in order to allow the pump to not be pushed inward. read more

We purchased a $700 grinder along with a $2,000 espresso maker in 2000. Within 6 months the coffee grinder stopped working. It was beyond the return date and the folks at Clive basically just said we're sorry but too bad. After constantly dealing with them (Paul) they finally agreed to accept the grinder back for $400 and this probably took a month of mine and my wife's time. Totally unacceptable in my book (they should have taken it back for a replacement) but just to put an end to it all my wife and I agreed. The use of the grinder for 6 months cost $300 plus we had to go buy a new one which we did off Amazon (it cost $300 and still works fine 5 years later). Fast forward 5 years, and the espresso maker stopped working. It's an expensive machine (but they pointed out to me that it was a "least expensive machine"). I worked with the technical staff and they seemed nice, for sure, all in emails, sending me various videos describing how I might trouble shoot the problem and this went on for a month but nothing worked. Finally, the staff I was working with suggested I replace the control panel. Fine, $120 purchase online and it was here within a few days. I installed it- it didn't solve the problem. I wrote to them telling them this and they said the soonest they could schedule a time to repair it was May (3 months away). That wasn't going to work for us so I asked where else could I go to get it serviced and they suggested another company. Great. I told them I would return the brand new control panel (in all its original packaging) and this fellow Kyle said sorry no returns. Then he pointed to a spot on their web page verifying that. Well, when the technician originally suggested (in an email) that I should replace the control panel he never said anything like "just an FYI , if this doesn't solve the problem you're still paying for the panel". He gave me a link to the order page, which I just clicked, hit "add to cart" and put in my credit card number. Unbeknownst to me, below the screen on my phone was the no return policy. I never saw it, and it never occurred to me in the least that if this didn't work that they wouldn't take it back. I called them, got the same run around I had 5 years ago "I'm sorry, only Arthur can issue a refund . I'll have him call you back." Arthur never called. Then he completely ghosted me on emails. Finally this guy Kyle, sends me a very professional email basically directing my attention to the no return policy. This was so lame. So incredibly lame. We spent $2,700 on a grinder and espresso machine and 6 months later the grinder is dead. 5 years later the espresso maker is also dead. If I was willing to wait 3 months they could take a look at it and of course I'd pay for this repairs. I sent them a final email stating that I'd be sending the control panel back along with the detailed story of the complete and totally disastrous interactions I've had with them and what to my wondering eyes did appear, but a refund of the $120 control panel! But guess what? They only sent back $108 (they deducted the "free shipping " part of $12. I also paid $13 to send it back as well. So... I spent $120 for a control that didn't work and the net refund was $95. I have an appointment with a company to work on it and the rough estimate is as low as $200 to $1,000 ($200 is just the fee to bring it in and begin the prices). Reading most of the reviews, I am surprised at some of the discontentment expressed as I have never experienced any of the aforementioned problems while shopping at Clive. We have purchased multiple products from their store - from new items to used items, and have not had any problems with their service nor the equipment itself. Additionally, I would say that their communication (both online and in-person) is very friendly and customer focused. I have purchased an espresso machine, a knockbox, and a pourover dripper from them. The former two were "used" and the last item was new. All purchases went very smoothly. Regarding the espresso machine, I felt like I had a thorough opportunity to try out and get a walkthrough with the machine to make an informed decision about what I wanted to purchase. I even received a follow up a few weeks later asking if I was having any issues with my machine. For both the knockbox and the pourover dripper I also had no problems. The pourover dripper was actually not in stock, and they did not have a ship to store option, but when I got on the phone with someone from the store, they quickly helped me order the item that I wanted, and were able to get the order information sent to me by the end of the call. Clive also frequently runs sales, and I would also recommend their used machines. Although not cheap, good quality coffee equipment makes my coffee much tastier and I have not regretted any of my purchases here! read more

I live near Clive's showroom in Portland so it's an easy trip to see all of the machines they have to offer and get great service. Two months ago I upgraded my home coffee game into the world of espresso. I went into the showroom planning to buy a Lucca espresso machine but Graham did an excellent job explaining the minor differences between all of the machines they offered in that price range an I ended up spending a little bit more on an ECM Synchronika because of it's high quality internals. I couldn't be happier, the ease of service and quality of the machine give me the peace of mind I'll be able to easily service any issues we run into down the road. I paired the machine with the Eureka Mignon Specialita which seems to be the sweet spot of their mignon offerings. It is great grinder and the customer support at Clive is excellent. I notice a few of the reviews here point to folks who had issues with their machine over time. That's really a review of the machine itself and not reflective of Clive's customer service which has been exceptional in the years that I've shopped with them. read more

I purchased a Luca M58 a couple years ago, along with a Silenzio grinder and countless accessories. I think it's fair to say that I've spent a fair amount of money with Clive coffee. Have I gotten my return on investment? Absolutely. The machine has been fantastic and the grinder has been bulletproof. I take good care of my items but have not babied the machine. It's used most days and make several drinks. Specifically during holidays when it will pull dozens of shots and steam a gallon of milk each day. I've had family members learn on this machine and at times, mess up quite dramatically. But nevertheless, everything keeps on running without issue. Best of all... the customer service. Truly what makes Clive Coffee excel from its competition. As long as they continue to have their current quality customer and technical repair service via phone, they will always have my business. My brother, who isn't a customer, spoke with a representative for almost an hour. In which time the representative educated and answered every question he had about espresso and the equipment surrounding it. Their representatives are true coffee nerds and care about both clients and non clients alike. When I was first deciding which flow control unit(ECM one vs Lucca one they have) to add on to ECM Synchronika, as the ECM flow control with the machine from some other seller was $200 cheaper. I asked Clive's support. The sales person told me the Lucca unit was superior. Plus they were giving out Lunar scale so I went with them. A decision I very much regret today. The ECM machine was beautiful. However, the Lucca unit I got was full of scratches, in a way it totally ruined the aethestics of a high-end machine. In addition, the allen key I got with the original E61 mushroom was full of rust. I very much suspect I got a 2nd hand flow control unit. Not to say the unit was leaking when fully turned off. In one of the support emails they said the flow control unit is 3d printed and hairlines are normal. Believe me, this would no way pass the quality control bar and no one would even think of purchasing it seeing what the real thing is like(also attached the picture here). In hindsight, I could have saved $200 going with the other vendor and the going back and forth with customer support. There was still the home starter kit and one tamper that has not shipped after almost a month of my purchase. I wrote a review on their website but it turned out they don't release the review until 14 days later and customer service usually tries to persuade you before then. My main concern about Clive is the inability to provide the white-glove, concierge level of support they continually self-promote. Even before the pandemic, calls to the 888 number would go to voicemail - no one seemed available to take a call. Responses would take more than a day to get a reply. Email dialogues might take another 24 hours to obtain responses and obtain meaningful advice. Online chat agents can take up to 15 minutes to respond and they are only able to tell you if you have a sales or support issue. If you do have a technical or repair issue (as I have), the chat agents just tell you to contact support. They are not able to help with real issues, and they cannot transfer you to anyone in technical support So you're left waiting. Even though you'd swear the website indicates Clive will take immediate care of you - it's "Online chat support" - but it's really just someone to answer the online phone and tell you someone will get back to you. Everyone is very nice. The overall experience in buying was reasonable. I found the seller I worked with to be lacking "serious expertise on espresso". For example, he was not versed in grind retention, the pros and cons of single-dosing, etc. I felt I had better awareness of the topics from my cursory research in online forums. He just wasn't the "expert" that the Clive reputation seems to indicate they have. I still buy from them, but I would tell a new buyer Clive is not that much better than other retailers. The courier reimbursed me for the damage. Then magically the diagnosis changed and the machine was totaled and I needed a new machine (which is about 2.5 times as expensive) Interesting... A bait and switch or incompetence?Neither is good. Instead of owning this mistake a 6 month back and forth ensued with the courier corroborating that the replacement value of the machine was covered had they correctly diagnosed the issue. A friend recommended Clive Coffee who ordered an out of the box machine she loves--I followed her example with a BZ 10 which was supposed to have a slight problem with the front leg that was corrected for a $200 deduction, but what I got was a damaged frame and no tech available to repair. After weeks' worth of correspondence back and forth they cannot send a tech, I get mansplaining emails about how I ordered this machine with leg issues (not frame). Six weeks later I am returning it because customer service has been a nightmare. They admit they have never sold such a damaged machine before, but they will not replace it with a new one due to out of the box policy. To send me a new BZ10 would cost them $200. I came to Clive Coffee for a Milk Steaming class. I have to say, I had a great experience here! The instructor, Victoria, was very helpful & thorough. She explained a lot of techniques and was very patient with us. She showed us the different techniques used in milk steaming for latte art. I was very satisfied with this class! A great investment if you're looking to perfect your latte art skills! Even though I'm just learning to make latte art at home for my family, I feel like this would be a great class for anyone to take! They really do a great job here! I researched espresso machines for a long time. I called Clive Coffee only because their website seemed so "hip". I was worried that they had a limited selection compared to other online stores. I spoke with them on the phone and they were extremely helpful in walking me through terminology and the advantages and disadvantages of every machine. I had already talked to their competitor, "WholeLatteLove" and frankly, their website and knowledge were impressive, but Paul and Mark at Clive TOOK TIME to LISTEN and respond. When will salespeople (of whom I am one myself!) begin to listen to their clients? They would do so much better! In the end, I spent twice as much as I wanted to, and 6 months later, I'm not the least bit disappointed! They sold me the Profitec Pro 700 and Macap grinder. It makes the perfect espresso and cappuccino. One would think such a massive manual machine is complicated and difficult to master. NOT TRUE. The boys at Clive will walk you through the process of setting it up (yeah, I don't read directions!), and within a day or two, you will be making perfect froth for cappuccinos and lattés! I am a novice who tinkered with E61 and Mazzer electronic mini A which I thoroughly enjoyed. When I felt that it was time for me to be ambitious, I researched and looked around. Linea Mini was a contender as was GS3 and possibly something more daring. I was looking at a conical grinder too. There were so much info and options out there that it was not easy to make the choice, especially when it gets so complicated to return anything back. In the past I had an experience with another competitor in Seattle, WA who seemed nice and approachable from their marketing videos but in actuality, I was not too impressed with my whole experience of purchasing through them. I didn't find their tech support much help & I was not too happy with their packaging of the Rocket R58. this time, I tried Clive Coffee. Happened to speak with Ben. I told him I want to upgrade from the current set up I had. He was amazingly patient with me, giving his input by listening to what I was looking for and what I was not liking (in more of a layman's terms too). Ultimately, he helped me solidify my decision to buy Linea Mini. Then we talked about the different types of grinders, burrs, my pros and cons about Mazzer mini after 2 years of using it, etc. made suggestions, sent me pictures of the grinders. Now, that takes a lot of patience. In the end, I purchased the Linea Mini and Macap M7D. after the delivery and during my setting up, I of course, called and asked a few more questions. Again, he was very helpful and engaging. So when I was having a hard time with the grinder, it was good to know that Ben can help me during their business hours. Paul and Karen were also very good to speak with as well. At the end of the experience, I feel like I made the informed decision and don't regret spending more than what I had planned. I've never been to the store but I saw they were selling online a coffee maker I wanted to buy. It was a new model and they were one of perhaps two online retailers who had it in stock. I purchased the coffee maker online on Dec. 23rd; I got it delivered to my house the NEXT DAY--Dec. 24th. My wife wrapped it and placed it under the tree for Christmas Day. I call this exceptional customer service. I didn't pay for any expedited delivery. Since they're in Portland, OR and I live near Seattle, WA, I thought they might be able to deliver it overnight, and I was right. I'm a customer for life now, and I hope to make it down to their store to see what goodies they have for sale. This is a great company. read more

I spoke to two different customer service representatives regarding two separate machines in the open box specials. The first one I asked for photos of the damage. There was only stock photos so I reached out on chat and got Suzy. She said she didn't have additional photos. When I acquired about photos of the damage she ended the chat. It sold quickly...A second machine I was interest came out! Perfect! Again no photos of the damage so I got a chat session going with Sean. I said can I get photos of the repair done to the frame of the machine. He said no problem give me 15 minutes! 20 minutes pass and he said he didn't forget about it me and to give him more time. Almost and hour passes and he states he unboxed the machine and the issue was so minor he couldn't even photograph it. Awesome! By the time I went to purchase the machine it was already sold. He tried upselling on a very damaged unit for the same price. He stated it was still a great deal. I told him it wasn't a great deal if it had very visible damage and the other one didn't. He didn't respond. The next day I inquired if that company sold new frames. Heck if I could get a new frame maybe it would be a good deal! Never got a response. Followed up again yet a 3rd time. Still have not gotten a response. Makes me second guess buying an espresso machine through this company. Just recently there were some issues with the system which they helped me debug even without really knowing if the unit was still under warranty. They're extremely helpful when deciding on which machine is right for you. They've got a great showroom space and more importantly if you're not super experienced in the coffee game, it can be a little intimidating but this team makes you feel welcome and are eager to share their tips/knowledge. I ended up purchasing the Lucca M58 and have been completely happy with it. I've had it serviced once after 18mths but other than that it's worked like a charm and any question that I have, I just hop on the phone and Clive's tech staff walks me through anything. Seems like a small coffee shop that wanted to venture into the online retail business, but it can't post an accurate product photo. I bought an Acaia Pearl Scale expecting that I would receiving the white scale with a gray cover as advertised on their website. I got the shipment in a timely manner and opened it only find out that it is the black cover. I had reached out to the customer support line multiple times only to get a voicemail. They called back but it was always while I was working (which was inconvenient). I Chatted in today to speak with one of their reps who stated she guesses "It must be one of those classic eye tricks." (Which it's funny to say, but it sounds like a nice way of saying I'm blind.) They go to offer me 10$ for the inconvenience after they said they cannot reimburse for a 29$ cover. I can't figure it out in this place they sell espresso machines or advertising for Subaru cars! I went to Clive Coffee to buy few parts for my espresso machine. Waited over fifteen minutes no help what so ever. They looked at me few times but, did not even acknowledge I am waiting. The receptionist was on the phone all the time and the owner or sales person, older gentleman with gray beard was talking to another person unrelated to espresso machines. But I learned he use to live in North Carolina. His family is living in Jacksonville Florida, he has two Subaru cars and his favorite car is his 99 Impreza. The one he drives to work every day.
