Gorgeous store! they carry high end yarns and accessories, so I don't get to really shop there very much, but I come in "drool" a lot! So nice to see the beautifully displayed yarn and samples. I'm new to knitting. I'm impressed the the prices of the products match what I saw online (yes, it's high end yarns and needles, but if you're going to spend your time on these products, make it count, and make your projects last!). The coolest thing I saw was that they will take your yarn and spin it into a ball for easy knitting. How awesome is that? That's gotta save me a lot of time, and the ball is beautiful! I just recently taught myself how to knit and have found that knitting stores love punny names. Close Knit is no exception (Clothes Knit would've been funny too). My newly found knitting circle calls itself the 'Knit Wits'. We love puns too! But I digress. The lady in the shop was very friendly and helpful and I was delighted to find a ton of yarn that wasn't wool or alpaca as I am intolerant to both. I don't know why but even after going to multiple knitting stores in SF/Oakland, I have had a terrible time finding non-wool yarn, and when I do, it has been pricey. The shop lady at Close Knit, on the other hand, pulled a ton of options for me and gave me circular needle suggestions as well. I came here because I was looking for a specific kind of yarn, but when I stepped in I wanted to buy everything!! There was such a nice selection, all the yarns were beautiful, and well priced too (at least compared to the other yarn stores around town). The employees were super nice and helpful. There were tons of knitted samples- hats and scarves mostly- all of which were beautiful and really showed how the yarn worked. They also had a good selection of needles and notions. My favorite thing about Close Knit was that all the yarns were soft. I've been to other stores where I couldn't imagine actually knitting with any of the yarns, but all the ones here were so nice against the skin. Highly recommend in all cases, but especially if you're making scarves, hats, or blankets. Super cosy, friendly store! read more

Ever since this shop moved into my neighborhood five years ago, I have been so grateful! I didn't like always having to drive to SE for yarn. I discovered the down-home friendliness and acceptance that people enjoy but rarely see in a retail environment. I found a good mix of beautiful, quality yarns, interesting samples and patterns, and help when I needed it. I have also appreciated that the staff offered me "space" to browse, think, create, and plan, while offering input but not being pushy. The women working there have really inspired me with their own creative directions. Close Knit, thanks for filling a much needed spot here in Alberta Arts! read more

This place has gorgeous yarns, and the folks who run it are fairly friendly. Most of their stuff is fairly Merino-heavy, which is fine if you're making hats or sweaters or socks, but it doesn't do much for items that you want a finer yarn for. But they have a very unfriendly return policy, and it is not clearly stated in their signage. I'd go to other yarn shops if they were ones closer. read more

This is my local yarn store and I am a relatively new knitter. I've been into Close Knit a few times and I have never really felt comfortable. The staff has consistently been aloof. Today I went into the shop and knew what weight yarn I needed, I knew how many skiens and I knew what size and type needles I needed. I stood at the counter for a good while before the staff person acknowledged me and she seemed very annoyed that she had to help me find some yarn. When I didn't know how many stitches per inch my pattern called for she said very condescendingly, "Well, that's what you need to know," then turned around, walked away and jovially greeted her friend who was in the shop as well. I am very disappointed that I am not welcome in my neighborhood shop merely for being a beginner. I probably would have gotten better information and customer service at Jo-Ann Fabrics. I am not shopping here again. read more

I think they have a good selection, even though the store is small and the prices are decent. This my "go-to" store whenever I need help or yarn (a lot of the times it's both!). Tiny & packed to the rafters with luscious yarn, Close Knit is a terrific yarn shop. I like how the yarn is displayed and the samples are well displayed as well to give people ideas of knitting projects. The day I went in, Allison was working & she is so helpful & knowledgeable. We had a great chat about all sorts of knitting & non knitting related subjects! It feels homey & comforting in this shop & I will make it a prime spot for my yarn consumption! My favorite (tho admittedly pricey) yarn is here :Tanglewood. This yarn is so delicious to work with & not readily available everywhere. Do stop in here & get inspired! Despite some of the derogatory reviews I read, I decided to check this place out, as I'd been once before (a few years ago, before I moved to PDX) and it's next door to Bolt (an awesome fabric store). I loved Close Knit! The owner was incredibly nice and informative. They have a wide variety of yarns and had the exact brand I was looking for. The owner even offered to call me when the color skein I wanted had been re-ordered. I was really impressed and thought the ambiance was warm and friendly. For those who may have had a lousy experience here in the past, I think they're absolutely worth a second chance. I will most certainly be going back! read more

I like the selection but the shop doesn't have the happy energy I've come to expect from a knit shop. Its not a bad place, no one has been rude to me but I will say that I live right around the corner and I go to Yarn Garden in se. But I went in the other day for a last minute project and didn't realize till I got home that they didn't offer to wind my skein. That's just bad crafty ettiquette. read more

Loved this friendly little yarn shop in Portland! I was out bopping around with my kids while on vacation, and stopped in to see if they had anything new for my stash (I'd brought vacation knitting but really wanted to knit something else). Walked out with a skein of Malabrigo sock yarn in a gorgeous colorway, and some new dpns to replace one that had snapped in the car. Great selection of yarns and colorways, some of my favorite brands and a few I hadn't seen before. Lots of notions, books and extras. Wish this was my local yarn shop. read more

Today I went into shop for some yarn for mittens. I've shopped here about 5 other times and received good service. Today, when checking out I was asked for the PIN number of of my debit card. When I said I'd rather not tell it to anyone, the person very rudely said, "Well, I'm not going to take it and use it for myself." I get they are trying to be careful with people touching their charge machine, but who the heck is going to verbally give someone their PIN number, plus there was another person in the store. Everywhere else that doesn't want you touching the machine runs it like credit so you don't need a pin. I was only spending $49.00, so I don't think it would have required a pin. She was also speaking loudly and talking crap about a parent who had a child in college living in the dorms and ripping on the parent for allowing it. I wouldn't want my kid living in a dorm right now either, but most college kids are adults and can make their own decisions. Just don't rip on other people loudly when I'm shopping. I will go to other yarn shops close by that aren't so rude and spend my money. read more

This is such a cosy little yarn shop. I could sit down on one of the chairs they have all buried next to piles of wool and silk and cotton yarn with pillows and blankets all hand knit or crocheted and read a book from their (surprisingly big for such a small space) library for ages. The community knitting table is littered with magazines and inspirational projects and is home to some of Close Knit's knitting classes. Ask any of the staff about a project you have in mind and they will be able to give you more guidance than you could imagine. Seeing as this shop is within walking distance from where I live and is as completely adorable as yarn shops get, I couldn't be more pleased with this essential little piece of Alberta Street. read more

Close Knit might be my favorite knitting shop in Portland. The staff (esp the owner) have always been friendly and helpful. When I've brought a kid in with me (I'm a nanny), they've been nice to the kid, which is a big deal to those of us who spend time with kids. Their selection of yarn and needles is top-knotch. The shop itself is both gorgeous and comfortable. I can't remember if they still do, but for awhile they had some of Anne Buffum's art displayed and I love her. Every time I go in Close Knit, even if it is just to browse, I feel incredibly inspired to create something new when I get home! read more
