I've been slowly making my rounds to the many new yarn shops since we moved here last summer. I've driven past Fiber Rhythm several times, but have been waiting to check it out with my daughter. I was excited to FINALLY get an opportunity to stop in during our mom-and-daughter Galentine's Day adventure. There was one person working there, and they were so sweet, friendly, and helpful. That alone would bring me back again and again. Secondly, the space is airy, well-lit, and delightfully organized, which is very conducive to knowing exactly where to get what you need and also lends itself to relaxed meandering when you don't have a specific need, BUT as all yarn-crafters know, the yarn will let you know you need them. I don't make the rules. There's a fabulous selection of premium, affordable basics, natural, and synthetic fibers. The knitting needles and crochet hooks are behind the counter, so you will have to be intentional here. In places where I don't necessarily need any tools but see one, I tend to buy it. (Please respect my privacy on how many size 6 16" circulars I have purchased.) So, in this regard, Fiber Rhythm is saving me (and my pocketbook) from myself! In addition, there are dyes, several kits, and a winder to self-wind your purchases. To be honest, there was much, much more, but I had parked in a spot where I had to move by 4:00 pm, and we got there at 3:49 pm. This was a literal "speed run" through a yarn store. It's a nice enough store but there are myriad problems. Selection is limited. Prices are unreasonably high especially compared even to other nearby brick and mortar stores. And most of all the staff, while polite, seem to find endless ways to make shopping there an active obstacle rather than a pleasant experience. Random unexplained closures of undisclosed duration. Arbitrary restrictions on what tools and devices can be used by the clientele and when. And often plainly out-and-out passive aggressive criticism of clients, their choices, their innocuous behaviors, and so on. I so want to support this local small business but they keep giving me more and more reasons not to. Oy. read more

I am relatively new to this store, but it is one of my favorite ones now. Love their store space which is for merchandise as well as crafting. I got my first Lantern Moon straight needles here. I was hesitant since $20 is to me a lot for a couple of sticks. But what can I say? I just love them and ordered from their online store another pair and also a couple of their circular needles, and yarn, too. Service was awesome and I also used their store as my Rose City Yarn Crawl (RCYC ) home base store where I was going to pick up my pre-ordered merch --bags and shirts. Work priorities took over my fun filled plans to go to the RCYC, but maybe I will be lucky next year and will be able to check it out in person. So glad I found Dawn (master knitter extraordinaire) and her wonderful woollen selections to choose from for future projects. Dawn even has machines to use for silk knitting and weaving, quite lovely. I have been searching for the high quality 'phat' wool to knit me one of those cool blankets. This type of wool is actually called 'chunky' now. And in happening upon Dawn's shop, I was also lucky enough to happen upon a workshop introducing the phat wool master Alyssarhaye Graciano's Chunky Knits book launch: oh so very lucky me!!! The next Thursday found me entering her shop on time to enjoy a presentation by Alyssarhaye and learn more about knitting techniques, different types of needles and wool requirements, various stitches that master knitters utitlize. I am looking forward to going to more events at Fiber Rythm in the future; check their FB page if you're interested. Oh and parking's okay: street so not always easy. Your experience at Fiber Rhythm may depend on how you feel about psychics. No, I'm not talking about the feeling you can get walking into any yarn store -- that sense that someone has reached into the visual and tactile parts of your brain, and then manifested all the most delicious colors and textures in the form of yarn. I mean, sure, you'll have that feeling when you walk into FRCD: there is such a beautiful range of yarn, arrayed along a big wall and several free-standing shelving units, all well-organized by fiber and weight. You'll find good basics and some really tempting textured yarns, including unusual small-batch brands I haven't seen elsewhere like "Felt-it Felix" (an unplied, heavy yarn that looks great for felting). There are tall towers of yarn that is sold by the cone, and the best selection of cotton yarns I've seen anywhere -- including bulky cotton yarn, which is almost impossible to find. But no, anticipating my deep desire for bulky cotton yarn does not count as psychic (especially when the only BRIGHT colors require me to commit to a full cone: the smaller bulky skeins were all in neutral colors when I visited.) Nor do I ascribe supernatural powers to the store's small but remarkable assortment of "vintage" yarns -- older, quirky yarns that are available in only as many skeins as they happen to have in stock (though the quantities were large enough to tackle some decent-sized projects). Both the vintage yarns and the sale rack offered some genuine deals, and I found myself unable to resist the opportunity to get a few skeins of bright red mohair on remainder, at a great price. The real proof of psychic power came from my conversation with the shopkeeper who'd thrown herself into my yarn shopping, walking me through the store and counselling me on possible combinations and projects, all without me feeling the slightest pressure to buy. But then, in the course of discussing whether I was ready to commit to a lighter weight yarn, I expressed the optimistic hope that I could now knit more quickly, because I'd finally mastered continental knitting. "It took me a while, because I couldn't figure out how to purl. But then I tried..." "--Norwegian purling?" the shopkeeper ventured. "How did you guess?" I asked, flabbergasted. "I've been knitting a long time," she told me. But she wasn't fooling me for a second. Clearly, this is a psychic-powered knitting shop. Only you -- and Fiber Rhythm's friendly, psychic shopkeepers -- know whether you're ready for it. read more

Run don't walk to Fiber Rhythm! I am a machine knitter and it has been difficult finding a shop that carries yarn cones. Not only does Fiber Rhythm cater to machine knitters (and lots of other fiber arts) but it's the real deal: owners and staff who genuinely love textiles, will talk through projects with you, will teach you about different kinds of yarns and tips for using them, will let you pepper them with questions about knitting machines. Every time I visit, I end up spending an hour there just chatting and browsing. It's delightful. Fiber Rhythm also offers classes and tutoring! If you love crocheting or knitting, stop by for a visit! My husband and I were visiting Portland from Sacramento for the first time. We checked out Fiber Rhythm Craft & Design after having lunch at Pine State Biscuits. I'm happy to have found this store right before leaving Portland. I picked up a skein of Sugarbush Canoe yarn in Birch (something that Michael's/JoAnn doesn't carry) to make a snood. The owner is very nice, knowledgable, and engaging. She also keeps the shop very well-organized by gauge so it's easy to find what you need. read more

Great local yarn store! I'm in Portland visiting from Maui and wanted to check out as many local yarn stores as possible! This cute little shop has a great variety of yarn for a knitting or crochet enthusiast!! They had yarn from local makers and more well established yarn from the likes of Malabrigo and such. Imagine a cranky boss , Dawn, coming into her shop 20 min late to relieve her employee & not saying anything until bursting out to me with "you've been in my shop for at least 15 min & are asking my employee too many questions so you should buy a lesson." I had a basket of goods totaling $200 that I had selected thanks to the nice employee & actually was going to inquire about paying for a lesson to get started with what I was buying. Dawn wS so rude to both her employee & myself that I left without buying my item that had taken so long to pick out with care. Dawns attitude was not what one looks for in a knitting environment& I will not go back. Ironically I was the only customer in the store. Now I see why. read more
