Though they were packed with other shoppers, the staff was welcoming, friendly, and helpful. We each purchased a few skeins of yarn, and my daughter picked up an adorable claw clip in the shape of a ball of yarn with knitting needles. There was a wide variety of yarn, from cost-conscious basics to mid-priced natural fiber staples, all the way to sumptuously decadent fiber yarns at a luxury price point. Their needle selection was robust, their notions and other celebratory yarn-goodies plentiful as well. There is literally something for everyone here! They also have a wall dedicated to cross-stitch/embroidery with super fun kits. I know I missed mentioning something since it was stuffed to the gills with people, and if I'm honest, I was a little overwhelmed, but we look forward to returning soon for a more leisurely amble.

They were also extremely friendly and seemed to want to get to know me, what projects I'm working on, and what I was looking for. Second, the selection and prices were unbeatable. Starlight Knitting Society had so many different yarns and crafting accessories to choose from at very reasonable prices. Despite wanting to buy everything in the store, I left with a Starlight Knitting Society tote bag (my new favorite bag to carry my knitting projects in) and a tension ring. I really wish I lived closer to Starlight Knitting Society. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Portland!

Cut to today: they are my favorite yarn shop as a local. It's also the farthest from where I live so I don't get to visit as often as I would prefer. The shop is inviting and well laid out. The folks working there are friendly and helpful, and it's smack in the Alberta Arts District which is one of my favorite neighborhoods. Close Knit has a fantastic variety of yarns from basics to luxury ensuring that no matter your price point, you will find something delightful. They're one of the rare places that carries Noro Kureyon which is one of my favorite yarns and they offer it at a fair price compared to other yarn shops I've been to in the area. They are my go-to yarn shop for objective purchases and subjective yarn wandering. :)

I have been trying to find someone to do the repair and have no luck. Finally I decided to look up knitting shops on Yelp, hoping someone will be able to help. I called Nirto Knitters, and a lady picked up the phone quickly. She was upbeat, friendly and sympathetic. She explained almost no one would do the repair because it always looked "not great" (kinda like a thick patch). However, she recommended the "needle felting" method. I quickly googled it and it looked doable for small holes! Oh I really hope it will works! For this experience, I recommend NItro Knitters for anyone who need knitting guidance.

This is a wonderful gem in the heart of St Johns. The yarn shop side has a lovely selection of mid- to luxury yarns. I was excited to see Brown Sheep yarns here because they are a sweet reminder of my humble beginnings when learning to knit 20+ years ago. It was my go-to yarn for felting projects. Not many shops carry Brown Sheep. Did I need more yarn? You never ask a fiber artist that question. The factual answer is likely no, but the spiritual answer is always yes. I ended up with a gorgeous skein of Blue Sky Woolstock in Earth Ivy. The bookshop side has a lovely selection of books, cards, games, gifts, stickers, and bookish ephemera. When I visited last week, a fantastic Summerween display sat at the front of the shop. I couldn't help myself and had to buy "A Cursed Collection of Haunted Dolls." I was also happy to find a paperback edition of My Friends by Fredrik Backman, which has been on my list for ages. The same rules apply to the question of factual vs. spiritual need for books in the heart of a hopeless bibliophile. I'm excited to tuck into "A Cursed Collection of Haunted Dolls" because the lovely bookseller, Christine, mentioned that bar owners in St John's are IN this book! How awesome is that?!? It was such a delight to chat with Christine. I'm so grateful to booksellers like them for daring to dream and investing in spaces that nurture learning and imagination.
