Closets by Design just completed work on two walk-in closets and a coats closet for us this month. Having done 6 major renovations in our home, I have to say this was the smoothest one yet. All the people we dealt with from designer, Christina, customer service rep, Cindy and installer, Jonah, were so easy to work with. Appointments and work schedules were adhered to. And what made the whole process easy was their flexibility. We made a change in the design after we had already signed the contract. Office and design staff great. Mostly happy with outcome. My only criticism is that bedroom closets were designed for three sliding doors when ultimately there was not enough space so we now have a middle section somewhat hard to reach. I wanted custom closets for more space. Everyone was friendly. Just not necessarily knowledgeable or adept at their jobs. As with love, we can't have it all! They didn't cover my walls or floors with tarps, left a drink on my cherry dresser, and took incorrect measurements three times. They gave me about $200 off for my inconvenience and a few closet tweaks, but they really made me feel like they were doing me a favor (insert scoff)! For the record, I had another closet done by them a few years earlier and it was a great experience. Oh, and I think the person delegated to amend things, tried to cupcake me. Closets by Design recently installed 2 closets in my house. They look great but they ordered the wrong parts for 2 sections of the closets. They told us they would come back soon to complete and it's now been over 3 weeks and we have not heard from them. I called customer service and they connected me to someone who did not answer the phone, but I was told I'd receive a callback which I never did. I also reached out to the person who coordinated the install and I didn't get a response. I'm leaving this review hoping someone can help me get this installation completed. read more

We were jealous of a friend's garage that had been organized by Closets by Design, so I called them and asked them to come propose some organization for our garage. They sent somebody who had never done any work on a garage before, who had no ideas and basically just asked us to come up with ideas, and then failed to accurately render the ideas we did come up with on our own. This left us with so little confidence about the whole enterprise that I don't think I'd want to turn them loose on my garage. Maybe they are better with closets. read more

I had Closets by Design design and install a reach in closest in my bedroom and front hall and couldn't be happier. A designer came in, worked with me for a while and in less than 2 hours had a fully customized design for my space. On the day of install everything went well. I live in a high rise and sometimes it can be tricky with HOA rules and service elevators but they were professional and clean. Do not use this company. We had a simple closet put in our spare bedroom and the doors don't shut all the way and the unit looks like it's leaning forward. After some back and forth, the owner sent "his best installers" but still they were unable to make it look right. When you pay 3000 dollars for a simple closet you expect it to be right. In the end it seems that this company is ok with subpar work and does nothing to compensate the customer when a project does not turn out well. If you are considering this company my suggestion is to keep looking. read more

I needed a custom closet for my walk-in. Closets By Design's designer came out that week and took measurements and gave me a quote. It is not cheap but for the quality of what you get compared to the IKEA product I was also looking at (as well as the install) it was worth it for me. They also called me to let me know they could bump up my installation date by a week, which I appreciated! read more

I had used closets by design for every Closet in my home and had one left to do. The measuring appointment went well and the install date was pretty quick though i did have a problem with the actual install. After the installer left I went to rearrange several shelves and found that he had caulked them in. The shelves are supposed to be movable and I had to use a hammer to get them out. Luckily I was able to pry them out without damaging them, but it was very frustrating all the same read more

They are NOT, I repeat, NOT "ADA friendly" AT all !! Very disappointed. Had to go with California Closets and they were absolutely wonderful in following through with the ADA law. This husk ESA should be under scrutiny ! Shame ON them. read more

Avoid this place and go to California Closets. I had closets installed by both. Closets By Design closet is awful. The adjustable shelves are not secured by anything just sitting on a metal peg. I am short and put sweatshirts and sweaters on the shelves. Every time I need one, I have to hold the shelf with one hand and pull the shirt off with the other. If I just pull one off the shelf, the whole shelf comes out at me. The contractor who installed my closet didn't do a great job of securing everything to the walls properly. In some sections it looks like it's barely hanging on to the wall. My shelf has collapsed on one side of the closet because there's too much space in between the pegs now. I only have some t-shirts on the shelf nothing to heavy weighing it down. Even if I did have something on it weighing it down, it shouldn't have collapsed if it was secured properly. The shelf will not stay on the pegs anymore and keeps falling off because the shelf can't reach the other side of the pegs anymore. I don't know if the shelves were just installed crooked and it took some time for it to settle but now the shelf just falls off. I guess it was just easier for the contractor to install it and hope I didn't notice then just be honest with me and tell me he can't install it and drill into the wall the way it should be secured. I was frustrated waiting for them to show up (late and tried to cancel) and the lady who picked up the phone was rude. Had another closet installed by California Closets. Everything was perfect and is holding up while this junk is getting ready to fall off the wall! read more

Although my building is old and walls and floors were crooked, Closets by Design worked with me to ensure that the custom closets and pantry appeared professionally installed, coming back multiple times to complete the job. The only improvement I would recommend is use of more "modern technology" in measuring spaces. They do everything with tape measures and then "hand draw" designs. Not only does this take a long time, but no way to visualize design in "3-D" rendering as all other competitors do. However, end product looked great and all staff very professional. read more

Tricia Lothschultz and her boss Michael Comins of the Chicago and Downtown Chicago location were fantastic helping us reach our closet goals. We have a long and narrow walk-in closet. It is only 4 feet wide and 138 inches long. Tricia was very patient in working through the initial design with me in person. After she left, I realized that a dresser had been blocking a steam shower access panel that we had to build around. So we revised the design, and Tricia was patient and accommodating. Then a few weeks later I thought about the design some more and wanted to revise the design, Tricia and Michael accommodated us again. We love the final product! We can finally access all of our clothes and have so much more flexibility and efficiency and everything looks organized and has a place. It really is a dream come true. read more

After waiting 4 months for a closet installation from Closets by design, I finally got the install day on Nov 19th.  The installer arrives around 10am to install the 4 closets that were designed/measured by one of the companies designers.   The closets that I chose were all shelves and no additional accessories. The installer disassembles the old hardware in the closets and informs me that the shelves have not been cut for my closets and he would have to go back to the warehouse...cut them and then return in an hour and a half.  I say no problem whatever it takes to get this done.  He leaves and then calls me and informs me that he has a saw on his truck and can cut the items at my place if i have an outlet and a place to do it.  I tell him that I do , he can cut them on my deck , there is an outlet there.  He says ok and instead of coming back to do that he drives off and doesn't inform me that he is leaving after he asked me about cutting the shelves at my place.  He left around noon and returned 2 and 1/2 hours later and says that I am sorry it took so long ,but everyone was on lunch. He added that he picked a bad time to leave.  He starts to work on the closets finally close to 3pm.  about 4:15pm he informs me that he cannot finish the closets today! He continue to say I to come back because the measurements didn't accommodate the light in your pantry and the wood was not measured for in the pantry. He also said that he made a mistake on the measurements for the hallway basement closet.  I asked him what could he finish and he said he would finish the upstairs and master bathroom closets today. So after hearing this news I was very upset and I called the Closets by Design office. I received a call back from Michael who is the franchise owner and I express how angry I am that not only am I not getting the job completed but 8 hours from my day was wasted on this project.  This is unacceptable.  He tells me that he cannot get the wood cut his shop is closed.  He didnt offer to do it on Saturday (which was the next day) and told me he would schedule something when I got back from my Thanksgiving vacation which provided him with an additional week to get this problem correct with the wood and measurements. He said he was sorry like it was no big deal or inconvience while the contents of 4 closets are on the floor in my home, no where to place these items and I have company coming to town for the thanksgiving holiday.   I lost it as I expected that he would do more for me as I am very inconvienced.  He just paused after I the reschedule was done and I said...Is this it?  He said well what do you want some money off?  This made me really mad...I said , what do you normally do for customers that are this unhappy?  I am totally inconvienced!  He said he has never had this happen before and offered me some additional accessories for one of my closets. It was no cold no sincerity at all.  We ended the call and he called me back to discuss these accessories (which I chose a shelf to store canned goods to add to my pantry) and said to me I am sorry if I didnt sound like i was really sorry before it has been a long day...I said long day I have been here with your installer waiting for four closets to be installed. After getting off the phone with Michael the installer was packing up this things and I asked him if he finished the master bathroom closet and he informed me that he also cut that wood incorrectly and was not going to be completing it in addition to the other two incomplete closets. I then called Michael back and he offered no solution and just vented about the installer but committed to the 29th to install the closets and that he would include the canned good shelf for my pantry for my troubles. Which I agreed to at that time. So my follow up appointment was scheduled or I thought it was with the manager Michael over the phone to come back and finally install my closets on the 29th of Nov.  I didn't get a confimation call like I did the first time and no call the morning of the rescheduled day.  So about 8:45am I called and Michael answered the phone.  Long story short he didn't have the wood cut for my cabinets and was not scheduled to come to my place. He then , after 3 other measurments decided to send out another installer to my place to measure yet again.  Including the original measurement this was the 4th measurement. He then said he would make sure that canned goods shelf arrived and would be refunding me some money after this additional issue happen.  He told me he could do the install on the 30th and the installer also committed to a 9am arrival.  On the 30th everything finally happen that was scheduled except the special canned goods shelf for my pantry that the manager promised never showed up, I never got a call from him to confirm to ask if I was satisfied, and of course there has been no compensation at all for all he promised. read more

Where do I begin, the entire experience was a nightmare for me. I waited for over 3 months for the closet installation, I was looking forward to it and excited about showing it off to my 50k followers on social media as I own a boutique and would be using this closet for business. It took over a month for the installation to be complete and a total of 6 visits and I was still left unsatisfied. So June 13 they came out to install a closet that left me in complete disbelief. It looked horrible, the hangers did not fit one one end (see pictures) and I was losing so much space because the design fell short of the measurements that I thought I had signed off on. I called to complain and they initially gave me a hard time saying that's what I "contracted for" and I explained to them that the unit was not properly put together and how unahappy I was. They said they would be out to "correct" it but they would have to charge me more if I wanted to "change anything." I told them I did not want to "change" anything I just want the 'PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION of a closet that I am paying almost $3k for (mind you this is a very small room & it was very simple only hanging rods and a couple simple shelves. 3 small walls.) They came out again and added a "bridge" to make the unit look unified which it did not. I still had the same problem with the space too small for hangers to fit and the unit looked so sloppy, something I could've done myself and definitely not a professional job. Again I called to let them know I was unhappy and they wanted to send somebody out to "look at the unit" which to me was a waste of time and money since I had to take time off of work each time they came over. I sent them videos and pictures but they said they had to come out again to look at it although there wouldn't be a solution until they saw it in person, so I agreed. I cancelled another morning of work and waited for someone to come out between 9am-11am as they had said, but then when they called me to let me know they would be there at 11:30 I told them I had appointments schedule and that the window was form 9-11 so he asked for pictures and came up with the solution over the phone.... I wish I had known that as I cancelled 2 clients that morning to have them come out. They sent someone over a 4th time now and they were to take the unit apart so they can space it correctly for the hangers to fit, which they did however this time I was left with boards on the bottom of the unit that were floating off that were never attached, gaps throughout the unit and again a very unprofessional installation. I called again and they said they would send someobody else out there to look at it and see what they can do. So a few hours later they send someone out for the 6th time and he tells me that it can be fixed and that they would have someone come back out again. Another week goes by and they come back and finally put it together, adding some molding at the bottom for free which was nice and made it finally look like a unified unit. Due to all of the other jobs I was left with many patches on my walls from the screws they had to put in and remove. I'm still not completely satisfied but it's alot better than what it was so I took my losses & learned my lesson. Many of my followers had been asking for updates and I was embarrassed to show them but now I'll be making a video on everything since I took pictures and videos of the entire process. Definitely a headache to live with clothes on the floor and throughout your house for over a month and I don't think I received proper compensation so I would not be recommending Closets by Design.
