On May 7, I was a first-time visitor to this store. I found I cute white skirt and noticed it had both the store price tag $17.99 and also a tag from Kohl's for $12.99. I brought it to the attention of the salesperson at the counter and was told the Kohl's tag should have been removed but that the price would be their store price of $17.99. Went to the store this weekend and they have a good amount of options for the size of the store. Most of the brands seem to be aimed towards more of the adult (not junior) audience. I did see a good variety of brands including Calvin Klein and Lanes End. Watch their social media for sales, I needed up hitting their 90% off clearance sale. The people that worked there are nice. If you end up getting a lot, the people at the front desk will put your items together with your name for you by the front desk. So the reason for the lower score - item quality. I definitely should have examined the items I bought more carefully. I bought two items that had faux leather on them and I noticed when I got home that the leather on both of them was ruined. Additionally, one of the dresses I bought had been cut significantly at the elbow. Next time, I will definitely be a lot more careful read more

I love shopping at Clothes Mentor. This location is larger than the one closest to me. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I was trying to find an outfit for a road trip I was taking, and one of the ladies jumped right in to help me. She helped me pug together the perfect outfit, and I was so comfortable and stylish! She coordinated the outfit perfectly down to the accessories. This is also my favorite location for handbags. I love when I find items brand new with tags and a yellow clearance sticker is a bonus! read more

On 16 March I took in 20 pairs of very well kept and stylish shoes to the store in Newport News, Va. Each pair had been sanitized and had been kept in plastic boxes or the original box. I was greeted in a not so friendly manner by a young salesperson. She appeared to be biracial, Caucasian and asian. I signed in as instructed and was told I had to return the same day to pick up the shoes not selected. I told her that I had not been provided this information by the male co-owner when I came by two days ago. I observed that I was no 12 on the sign in list. The afore mentioned sales person dismissed me and I left. An hour later I was contacted and told my shoes had been complete. I was confused as to how all 13 of our consignments (and my 20 pairs of shoes) had been reviewed so quickly. When I returned I was told they only accepted 5 pair because the rest were scratched or stained. This was a bold lie. She offered me $30 for these designer shoes. I walked through the store and took pictures of shoes in much worse conditions. In my opinion my shoes had been rushed through without a thorough inspection. I took all my shoes and left. A week later I returned and spoke to Gabby the manager. I explained to her what had occured during my previous visit and asked for an explanation. She stated she would check the video for that day and call me with the results. I have yet to hear from her as expected. Don't waste your time here. While visiting family in the area, I was taken here to shop. I liked it so much I went back twice! Its hard to find gently used clothes (or even NWT) for women that are not Junior sizes or styling, while still being name brand items. Clothes Mentor has a great selection of everything (pants, skirts, shorts, tops, dresses, outerwear, shoes, jewelry, handbags) in ALL sizes. The store is clean and well organized, and you can even get a stroller down the aisles (a plus when shopping with little ones). I picked up some great spring/summer things from top brand names in excellent condition at good prices. I got two dresses (H&M), jeans (Macys), two capri pants (Chico and Old Navy), two tops (Lands End and Style & Co), two shorts (Old Navy), and three pairs of sandals (Talbots) for under $90! The only thing I will caution is that the handbag prices are a little steep. They only carry genuine label purses (not knock offs like some shops), and some still have the tags, but they are over $100. Still less than half the price of new, which is a bargain, but I'm so rough on my purses I don't like to pay too much. And when buying from a second hand shop, it seems overpriced. Very big store. Good variety of designers. Cash on the spot of they buy your clothes. Bring in clean clothes in good condition. Recent styles and they pay cash. You can get credit to use in store instead if you prefer. They also have rewards cards to earn more money the more clothes you bring in. And you get credit for referring people there too. read more

Clothes Mentor is like Plato's Closet's older fashionable sister. If you need help determining what to sell at each check out this review and the other one at Plato's Closet for help! This place is sooo clean and the wait was awesome for a weekend (about 15 minutes). Everything is nicely organized as well. Clothes mentor is looking for trendy, more mature adult clothing (think 25+). Things that sold for me were some classic Old Navy pants, Michael Kors/Giorgio Armani scents (make sure they are over half full) and pair of Chinese laundry boots. This is NOT the place for bodysuits, flashy dresses etc. take that to Plato's closet! And of course, have everything clean and pressed and folded. I really appreciated that they kept my clothes folded after looking though them. Look closely over your items for any loose strings, signs of wear etc before bringing it in. Again, this isn't a place to make money. This is the stop you make on your way to the Goodwill for clothes you never liked to begin with. read more

If I could give this store no star, I would. Due to covid the restrooms are closed. I asked for an exception for my daughter who is 2.5 years old. They told me that I could walk (in the dark) to one of the other restaurants nearby and use their restrooms. Their reasoning is that they wanted to decrease the possibility of spreading covid. Closing off restrooms to customers is not part of the governors executive order, so why is this policy in place? The girls said because Applebee's is forced to be open where they have the option to be opening. No sense. Then why is the store open to begin with? I would understand if they said no to me as an adult, but they said no to a toddler. They said they didn't want to get in trouble with the manager for going against their request. I asked when the manager would be in so that I could speak to them. They said the manager wasn't coming in because they were afraid of getting covid. So the manager is concerned about themselves but not their employees or customers? What's the difference between me touching the counter top, entry doors, products, etc versus the restroom?!?!?! I suggested to the girls that they should search for another job where their manager would take care of them and their customer and that the fact that they didn't make an exception was beyond ridiculous. I used to love clothes mentor and have been visiting/giving my business since it first opened in Newport News. I have also visited/given my business to Once Upon a Child for the past three years. After all that, to simply deny a toddler to use a restroom goes against my principle. This place is a bloody joke!! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!! The owner has her 9,.......NINE year old son running the register, which took an absolute eternity(he was all too happy to tell everyone his mommy owned the store & he turns 10 at the end of June) seriously, do you want a 9 yr old handling your transactions?!? Unfortunately when you take in freshly dry cleaned designer clothing, the 16 yr old going through the clothing has no idea what's of value...... the clothing in the racks are old & worn out and several pairs of shoes had so much wear, no soles were left, this place has gone down hill! I think I'll stick with consigning with Act 2 at least they know what things of value are worth!! read more

DO NOT SHOP OR SELL HERE. I would give them zero stars if I could. I went there with several bags of clothing and worked with Gabriella. First of all, she didn't greet me as she was hanging clothes and just said to check in and I'll get to you. I brought 7 bags of stuff, nobody was in the store at the time and she couldn't even hold at least one of the two sets of very heavy double doors with my 3 trips. She started by saying that it may take 45 minutes to go through it. I said that was fine. She then said that they're racks were full due to the Government Shutdown and people needed to eat. She just rummaged through each bag shouting through the store as I perused the racks (which had several pair of DIRTY, well-used Sperry's, high heels and sandals; bags with rips, and out of style shirts... and that's all I noticed since she kept shouting at me through the store) about what they don't take. She did not take anything out of the bags, just pushing clothes aside that I had folded neatly so they wouldn't wrinkle. Then she shouted, next time bring clothes in laundry bins. There will not be a next time. A coworker came in and she told her that she "can't use any of this stuff, it's a zero for me" then continued to say that she needed to make a list of things for their customers that they need. I collected my bags and brought them to my car (sitting just outside the door) in 3 trips again. Two workers were there and they didn't at least help me through the two sets of heavy double doors, let alone even look at me. Gabriella was extremely rude with a stuck up attitude. The coworker wasn't any better (I didn't have to pleasure to get her name). I had items that were high end such as Vera Wang, Nine West, Express, Gap, Old Navy, Steve Madden, etc. All of these are listed on the website. I've tried. I've tried more than once. But don't think this location has the best buying choices as evidenced by a lot of 'out of style clothes and shoes. and I do know a lot of factors go in to each decision. However 2 items that where not bought from me where bought from my friend one day later ( same items - I gave them to her to sell) and a month later same thing happened with one more item. Again I know the stores needs change and I would hope decisions aren't being made based on judgment of the customer, but honestly that's the impression I got when the same person took in and examined my items and my friends. I will be addressing my concern with the mgt...actually, I believe she is mgt. The reason for the 2 stars is the other employees I've encountered have been extremely courteous and attentive. The quality of the merchandise, customer service, what they pay you for your merchandise...IS A JOKE. There is a sharp decline in what this store offered when it first opened a couple of years ago....and what they are today. I recently took some sweaters there to sell. They did not tell me that when I came back on Monday I'd be given a 'store credit' instead of cash!!! So the object is...they pay pennies on your stuff...then you turn around and use their store credit becsuse they hsve a lot of stipulations on giving you cash. My first impression was ok. I was greeted when I walked in, and while walking through the store I noticed everytime someone comes in they greet them. So that part was good. All of the clothing and shoes are name brand. Some of the items are older as far as the style, but there are alot of nice things. The shoes looked a little worn. The clothing is extremely dusty. My eyes were red and burning so bad looking through all the clothes. I had to stop looking. There are also designer bags. Alot of them! Coach, Vera Bradley, Michael Kors, Dooney and Bourke and more. However, they are waaayyyyyy over priced for a consignment shop. The Coach were all mostly $150. Vera was around $25-$45. Dooney and M. Kors were also in the $100 and up range. Also clothing is priced high. As a consignment shop, name brand or not it should be reasonably-priced. Go check it out for yourself! read more

When I first began shopping here I found the inventory good, the prices great but the customer serice non-existent, and at times, down right patronzing. I continued to shopped because the value was just so great! I came in around Christmas and it is like this store did some investment is GREAT customer service! They talked to me, found out what I was looking for and even showed me things I didn't know I needed. My husband is not real thrilled about this but I am!! So I can now highly recommend this store! No complaints. They have moved from oyster point road to jefferson ave. Across from Patrick Henry mall by Applebees. I think they have pretty good selection of coats , winter items and purses. I haven't shopped for summer items there so I can't judge. Good prices. Some of the jewelry I wonder how it was taken in as some of it looks really bad but it's ok. The quality of this store has noticeably diminished since it's opening a few years ago. As a consumer, the quality of clothes they are accepting resembles something more like a goodwill and the prices do not reflect the items true worth. As a seller, I am extremely disappointed. I brought in a basket full of neatly folded designer and ready-to-wear clothes. It took over an hour for them to give me a price quote. There were only 2 people ahead of me with a few items. The employees seemed to be sitting around chatting and on their cell phones. Understandably, they did not accept some of the RTW items I had (ex: handbags, shirts, etc.) but I was surprised they did not take the other items I brought in (Lucky Brand Jeans only worn once, Gap only worn once or twice, Sak wallet, etc.). However, they did take some Forever 21 scarves, cheap American Eagle scarves, and a Target bag. Huh?? My only conclusion is that they could not afford to buy the higher priced items. Also, when I received my basket back the clothes were just thrown back in and not in the same condition as when I brought them in. I won't be buying or selling here again. read more

I decided to do some purging of my apparel, handbags, and shoes. At first I thought I would simply donate these items but came across Clothes Mentor. After researching the website, I found that they were a "designer" resale shop which was perfect because I had several 'bridge' and 'designer' brands that I decided to part with. Here is the list of brands that I brought in: (please note, I only purchase my things at High-end department stores, specialty retail stores- no, TJ maxx, no consignment stores. I am very picky about high-end items and I shop mainly for classic pieces, thus I want quality in my purchases) Prada, Ann Taylor, theory, Jimmy Choo, Coach, Loft, Jcrew, Anthropologie, Armani Exchange, Benetton, Michael Kors, White/Black I gave the 3 young gals my items and was quoted about 45 minutes for my items to be assessed. So, I thought I would stick around and just look through the racks to kill some time. Had I not been there to sell my items, I would have spent no more than 3-4 minutes in the building. The racks were filled with many 'better brand' items ( JC penny items, Walmart, target licensed brands:, see: croft and barrow, George) also several items from charming Charlie and forever 21. As I continued I did spot about 10 Calvin Klein items and 1 loft item. I also found 3 things from Jcrew and 3 Rachel Roy. Yes, I was keeping a running tally of the bridge or designer items I could spot because I was alarmed at the majority of the branding. The rest of the brands were indicative of what you would find at Sears or another lower end department store. I found more brands that were more than likely considered 'no name' than anything else. When looking at the shoes, there was many outlet style nine west, madden, and lane Bryant, and some random brands and 1 pair of Cole haan and 1 pair of Steven. Handbags were basic handbags with the most notable brand being offered being, Coach- which of the 100 bags there were maybe 15 Coach bags. The overall environment looked similar to a clean thrift store with the merchandise being on par with what you might find at a Goodwill or Salvation Army. I spent a total of 1 1/2-2hours waiting on the "buy" to be completed. When they were finished, they took 10 items of about 35. The rest of the items were deemed "not selling well here." Or outside of the 12-24 month period. Not one of the items I provided was older than 15 months- and your website dictates within a 3 year span. Now, I understand that the staff follows the company criteria for buying. However, the people who you are marketing and advertising to either have shop with you or sell to you are reading your website. You have coined yourself to be a DESIGNER resale shop for WOMEN. Your staff, nor your merchandise supports your business model. I understand each market and demographic can influence how much or how little you purchase of certain brands. However, you have a store filled with BETTER brands. There were next to no BRIDGE brands and other than the few coach bags you had haphazardly lumped in with basic low-end brands, you did not have even 1 single designer item. If you are simply looking to buy gently used, current clothing, that should be your marketing focus. I was not looking to make any substantial amount of money, frankly, I chose to try selling my things because I normally wouldn't and thought to give it a try instead of my normal donation hauls. This was my first and last time doing this. With the amount of time I spent hauling the items there, waiting almost 2 hours, and hauling the rest back into my vehicle- it wasn't worth it. Had the store reflected what you are supposed to be (a designer resale shop) I would have been okay with the selective purchases because my items would have to rival other great designers and bridge brands but clearly, when the associate said: "these brands don't sell for us..." I thought, she's absolutely right. No, they don't sell for you because you don't have any of these real designer or bridge brand items in your store. The very few decent items you have are over-run by low-end/ better brand merchandise ( which has set the tone for a cheap thrift store) so much so that anyone who would have bought those very few nicer items will never probably find them because they won't stick around long enough to maybe find one "nice" or classy piece. read more

Used to shop there but will no longer buy from them!! They had an awesome clearance event where you could pay $20 for everything (clearance) that you could fit in one bag!! I bought 4 bags with each containing roughly 20-25 items. It was like getting a whole new wardrobe but when I went thru my closet to get rid of things to make room for all my new items & tried to take them to this same Clothes Mentor for them to buy they BANNED ME FROM EVER SELLING TO THEM AGAIN!!!
