Great little music venue on the central coast. Got to see our favorite band, met some new people and had a great time!

    Fruit on the bar.

The family and I were staying in Templeton for a few nights and yesterday the Mrs. decided she wanted to go for a walk. We had never stayed in Templeton. We usually just drive right through it because to the naked eye there really isn't much going on. There are a few restaurants such as the venerable McPhee's Grill. Walking through Templeton was eye opening. Yes, it is a sleepy two horse town but it has a lot going on. We arrived at our ultimate destination which was Club Car Bar. A cocktail bar and music venue. I guess it would be considered a honky-tonk. It was shortly before 5(I think) when we walked. Eric greeted us from behind the bar and we took a seat. Eric gave us a drink menu but we decided to stick with our go to drinks. I ordered a Maker's Mark Manhattan and the Mrs. ordered a Gin martini. Bombay Sapphire wasn't available so Eric suggested St. George Gin which I was somewhat familiar with. Both drinks were incredible. There is something to be said when you get drinks at a cocktail bar versus a regular bar. A lot more time and care goes into the drinks. It's not just pouring booze its chemistry. While we were enjoying our first round, Eric told us the history of the place. The murals that adorn the walls were painted in 1977. They depict scenes of the Old West. At one point the Cable Car Bar was a steakhouse which closed many years ago. Looking around I could totally see the place being a steakhouse. As we were enjoying our drinks and other patrons joined us, Eric shared some of the books that he had behind the bar that reference cocktail making and the history behind it. He was sharing his passion for the craft with us and we appreciated it. Eric asked if we wanted a second round which we naturally said yes to. He then asked if I wanted to try a Vieux Carre. Which I had never heard of. The best way to describe it is a New Orleans version of a Manhattan. Just more of a party in the glass. Eric shared the history of the cocktail and about his time bartending in NOLA. We had just visited New Orleans in March and the Vieux Carre I was drinking made me want to hop on a plane and be in NOLA by morning. The Cable Car bar does not provide table service. You have to belly up to the bar like any decent cowboy or cowgirl would. Food is offered and from the few things we saw being brought in it looked good. The food comes from the restaurant next door, Pig Iron, which the restaurant had of the operation. If you're ever in Templeton, drive slowly or walk. No matter what you need to stop at the Club Car Bar.....just do it after 4 p.m. when they open.

This is a pretty cool spot in Templeton. The vibe of the place is mixture of classy bar with a bit of dive bar feel, which I like. The drinks were great and so was the service. Can't wait to come back when they have an act on the stage.

From the purse hooks underneath (always such an appreciated detail) to the footrest the host offered so I would be comfortable on a bar stool to the mixologist who made the best drinks, our experience was 5 star. We had the smoked butter pecan old fashioned and a grasshopper (aka dessert in a glass) and both were the perfect exclamation point to a lovely evening! My husband appreciated the decor of tufted walls and the monkey sconces are a fun touch. All the details are perfect. Definitely visit if you're in town. No photos because they take your phones, but you can get one in the library before you enter if you ask. Cheers!

Let me just preface this by saying, I knew 'jack diddley' about this place till my cousin took me…read morethere, so I owe her all the thanks and praise for that. Then, of course, one would need to thank the bar for their drinks and presentations, which are awesome. You need a bit of showmanship to perform and serve at a place like this. Ok, here we go. Tucked away on a back street in Paso lies this interesting and very amazing venue. I would have never imagined in my wildest dreams going to a place like this, let alone what was inside. To be honest, I at first felt like I was entering the twilight zone, the first time I came here. In the back of my mind, I was thinking, " Is this what it felt like going to something like this during prohibition times? Now, in this post, I will not share all about your entrance, etc., into this place, as that takes the fun out of it, but I must add that if you are in the Paso area, this is a must on your list. Let's go back and recreate yesteryear, a very intimate and very exclusive, club-like atmosphere. You never know who is watching you; it's all that mystery. Does it feel a bit like the game CLUE"? You tell me. :-) Just remember this: speak easy, abide by their rules, speak quietly, and have fun!

Allow me to elaborate. Fairly small, 15-20 tables with a good size bar, and smaller counter facing the open kitchen. Dining by myself, I chose for the visual spectacle by the three in the kitchen, chefs/sous-chef/cook. BTW, I would say it's got a romantic setting. Greeted by the smiley hostess, and my fun and casual waiter Frankie (and burger-lover which I found out), I felt very welcomed. They feature a handful of beers, 2 that are brewed in-house, wines (a good $20 corkage fee if you bring your own), and an ample cocktail list. The menu is small, 1 of every animal - burger, pork, fish, chicken and veg -- and it's seasonal, menu changing soon. What I've tried: ============= BURGER [$29, 5.0 stars] -- I had to get a burger, after all, it's why I came in. Wagyu beef, melted comte gruyere, shaved/pickled onions, and a "backporch" bun -- wow, best burger in 5 years for me. Amazing quality, wonderful seasoned handformed patty, oooohhhh basically a cheese sauce, wonderful fresh bun. It needed some crunch to it to make it perfect, but along with the handcut large fries seasoned with a dryrub (ranch? parm?), it was over-the-top. SHORT RIB [$34, 5.0 stars] - perhaps the best I've ever had (and boy, have I had) with mushrooms in a red wine sauce. Served with amazing creamy polenta. Really nice portion. Love. PORK CHOP [$35, 4.5 stars] -- huge, cooked to perfection. Served with veggies and potato puree. I'd order every time, but see above.

Came in for dinner around 7pm and had a really lovely meal. Our server Frankie was stellar…read more The bread and butter was AMAZING. I thought it was crazy that it was $11 but it was so worth it. There's a bed of butter and herbs and spices under the bread and the texture of the bread was so perfect. I wish there was a touch more short rib in my pasta, but the flavor was nice. The fried chicken sandwich was also yummy, but perhaps a little too much sauce. They make their vodka and gin in house and the cocktails were delicious.
