It's been a long time since we've had such an outstanding restaurant experience! Even before we arrived, when we called in with a question. Nazare made sure we would feel comfortable. When we got there we were charmed by the small, warm bistro feel to the place and thanks again to Nazare who got us sitting, with drinks in hands quickly. Our waitress Quinn was delightful and a big help in helping us create the perfect order for ourselves. The meats were done to perfection. The service was impeccable. I want to further my Barley & Boar review. I've been 5x, and loved every moment. Who knew this little unassuming place from the outside is so outstanding on the inside in every way. Allow me to elaborate. Fairly small, 15-20 tables with a good size bar, and smaller counter facing the open kitchen. Dining by myself, I chose for the visual spectacle by the three in the kitchen, chefs/sous-chef/cook. BTW, I would say it's got a romantic setting. Greeted by the smiley hostess, and my fun and casual waiter Frankie (and burger-lover which I found out), I felt very welcomed. They feature a handful of beers, 2 that are brewed in-house, wines (a good $20 corkage fee if you bring your own), and an ample cocktail list. The menu is small, 1 of every animal - burger, pork, fish, chicken and veg -- and it's seasonal, menu changing soon. What I've tried: ============= BURGER [$29, 5.0 stars] -- I had to get a burger, after all, it's why I came in. Wagyu beef, melted comte gruyere, shaved/pickled onions, and a "backporch" bun -- wow, best burger in 5 years for me. Amazing quality, wonderful seasoned handformed patty, oooohhhh basically a cheese sauce, wonderful fresh bun. It needed some crunch to it to make it perfect, but along with the handcut large fries seasoned with a dryrub (ranch? parm?), it was over-the-top. SHORT RIB [$34, 5.0 stars] - perhaps the best I've ever had (and boy, have I had) with mushrooms in a red wine sauce. Served with amazing creamy polenta. Really nice portion. Love. PORK CHOP [$35, 4.5 stars] -- huge, cooked to perfection. Served with veggies and potato puree. I'd order every time, but see above. read more

Came in for dinner around 7pm and had a really lovely meal. Our server Frankie was stellar. The bread and butter was AMAZING. I thought it was crazy that it was $11 but it was so worth it. There's a bed of butter and herbs and spices under the bread and the texture of the bread was so perfect. I wish there was a touch more short rib in my pasta, but the flavor was nice. The fried chicken sandwich was also yummy, but perhaps a little too much sauce. They make their vodka and gin in house and the cocktails were delicious. read more

Went to B&B for anniversary drinks and dinner. They staff greeted us and made us feel very welcome. Table for two by the window and we ordered cocktails. She had the Fit for a King and I went with my standard bulliett rye Manhattan. Both excellent. We started with the Street Corn Brussels and it was surprisingly spicey in a good way. Shredded and mixed with the corn and peppers. Our entrée were the pork chop and braised short rib. Both were prepared excellently and the flavor was delicious. The short rib was cooked perfectly and fell off the bone. Mushrooms and red wine sauce with polenta made for an excellent meal. A little chocolate for dessert and we were off to the next. Finally gave B and B for our anniversary dinner and wow is all I can say and not in a GOOD way. Started with the bartender pouring my wife's glass of wine and then airing 20 minutes for my old fashioned that he had to look up in a binder on how to make! When I got it there wasn't even enough liquid to get the orange peel in the whiskey. Ordered the pork chop and burger. The bartender asked how my wife wanted her pork chop done because the computer was asking if it should be rare, medium, etc last time I checked you want a cooked through pork chop not rare. Well it showed up over cooked and dry either way along with a chicken dish that was the wrong order instead of the burger. Another staff member apologized and said they would retire the burger that then took 20 minutes while my wife's plate just sat there. Once my burger showed up it was obviously rushed as it had a piece of cold cheese sitting on the patty! While I waited I tried to order a B and B house beer that they were out of all types so I was offered a Coors Light in a bottle. Needless to say it wasn't the anniversary meal or service we hoped for and more importantly a huge disappointment in thinking the "nice" A town restaurant was going to be a great experience read more

Although a little small, this place was awesome with an open kitchen. The house gin was tasty and their cocktails were great. I was pleased with "The Bay" which was a nicely cooked and flavorful cod. But then I tasted my brother's burger which was even better. Then I had to try my wife's braised short rib which was out of this world! Bread and butter was hit with its honey whipped butter and focaccia bread. The baby gem Caesar, wedge style was nice. But I do recommend the cauliflower steak with the cheese sauce. Perfectly cooked and goes well with the sauce. Also the kimchi Brussels sprouts. Wouldn't think the two would match but it paired really well together. Main, the Wagyu beef burger, full of flavors and cooked to our liking and served with frites. We literally had almost everything on the menu. Pork was excellent with the sauce on top. Bronzino, flakey and juicy. Chicken and the brisket, both excellent. Not a dish was disliked. Everything was excellent which also contributed to a full belly so dessert wasn't consumed. What a great find. I haven't had a meal this good since I left the Bay Area in December. We arrived shortly after 5:00 on a Tuesday and were seated immediately. Our server Frankie H offered us still or sparkling water and we chose one of each. I'm used to being charged for sparkling water, but not still. No where on the menu is it listed water was $8 and Frankie failed to mention it. I was dissapointed to find $16 worth of water on the bill. I am not yet familiar with Paso wines and was offered several tastes before I made my selections. I had a glass of Justin Rose and Straight out of Paso Zin. Both wines were execellent. My friend got the tequila sow'r which she enjoyed. We started off with the Bread and Butter which was outstanding. I would go back for this dish alone. Next we had the Market Salad. While it was delicious, I was a bit shocked when it was presented and there were literally 3 pieces of lettuce. I would recommend that they rename this dish. We ended with The Beef, which was thick cut fatty smoked brisket. While the dish was good needed to add salt and pepper to the meat, which we needed to ask for. Also, the menu didn't state that there would be a 2.99% operations fee. Surprise! Overall it was a good experience with a few dissapointments. read more

My girlfriend and I went this evening to celebrate our 2 year anniversary, from the moment we walked in the atmosphere was welcoming and warm. Our server, Frankie, was exceptional at his job of making everything sound unbelievably appetizing! He recommended the mussel starter paired with the bread & butter. An incredible recommendation that her and I LOVED. I ordered the ribs and they were tender enough to cut just by putting my fork in them. They were an excellent pair with the polenta. Barley & Boar has consistently delivered great food, and the quality of the dishes is still something we genuinely enjoy. The flavors are well executed, and it's clear the kitchen knows what it's doing. We also have to call out Frankie, who is our favorite server. Frankie is always attentive, professional, and makes the experience feel welcoming every time we visit. That said, one of the things that originally made Barley & Boar stand out was how often the menu changed. It kept things fresh, exciting, and gave us a reason to come back regularly. Lately, those updates seem far less frequent, and the menu has started to feel repetitive if you visit often. Because of that, we've found ourselves coming in less. What once made the restaurant feel unique and dynamic was a big part of its appeal, and without that regular evolution, it has lost a bit of its spark. We still enjoy the food and service, but we do hope to see more menu rotation again in the future. read more

Last night was the second visit my wife and I have made to Barley and Boar. We did my 30th birthday dinner here in December '23 after hearing lot of great word of mouth locally and enjoyed that visit so much that my wife wanted to do her 30th birthday dinner at B&B as well. Last night was consistent with our first visit. The service upon arriving was exceptional from the hostess, to our waiter, to the kitchen staff, and in between. The entire team here is super friendly and interactive. I highly recommend making reservations at the counter where you face the open kitchen and get a front row seat to watch the amazing group of chef's and sous-chef's that make all the dishes at B&B from scratch. Sitting here seriously makes me appreciate their craft with the attention to detail they display. Food wise, we started by sharing the Bread and Butter, the Steamed Clams, and both ordered "The Beef" after it was recommended by our waitress. Everything was absolutely phenomenal. When it came to the entree, the meat fell off the bone and the jus it came with was exceptional. The side of potatoes and fresh seasonal vegetables were also a great touch. Also ordered the 'Fit For a King' old fashioned that was part of their expansive spirits/wine/beer list. It was one of my favorites in the county. Special shout out to the kitchen staff for the incredible Amuse-bouche for the 2nd straight visit. This time it was a piece of tender steak with kimchi and habanero dressing. Second shout out to the staff for all the personal touches on our dinner. It meant a lot to my wife to have her 30th birthday recognized by your staff so sincerely and she absolutely raved about the chocolate mousse desert that had a strawberry chantilly cream & salted strawberry foam that you provided us with at the end. A little slow when I went in so got seated right away and service was super prompt. Sat at the VERY comfy bar seats. Nice, clean look with a nice gas fire trough in the small outdoor seating area (didn't sit there but looks super charming). The food was OUTSTANDING. I had the bread and butter (the perfect touch of honey for a subtle sweetness) and the boar. The meat was so flavorful and tender and paired perfectly with the whiskey crème and mushrooms. Absolutely incredible meal from start to finish. We got lucky that another couple canceled last minute and were able to score a couple of spots at the kitchen bar. The first thing that struck me was how professional and organized the chef and his staff were. Very clean kitchen, no chaos for a smaller area and very friendly. Our waitress was phenomenal. We started off with a complimentary squash soup. If I had known what it was I would have been hesitant because I loathe butternut squash. This soup tasted like refined lobster bisque. Total game changer. We shared the dumplings, chicken and the iberico special. Each dish was 5* but the chicken was probably the best chicken I have ever had in my life. I had to come back and update my review to 5 stars. I have been back twice since my original review. The food and cocktails are still amazing but as important...the service has gotten better as well. It seems they have servers now that are familiar with the menu and just have that refined way about them as you would expect here. This restaurant has gotten pretty busy so a reservation is highly recommeded. We have found that if you go when they open and request sitting at the bar, you are usually ok if you didn't make a reservation. Plus, sitting at the bar is really nice if you are not with a group. My husband and I always enjoy talking to the bartenders...Maisey was a real delight on our last visit. Very friendly and engaging! We were very clear with the waiter about a food allergy (dairy) and he assured us a specific dish - a BLT sandwich - did not have any milk or butter. After one bite, we realized the bread was covered in butter and the sauce had milk in it too. We had asked the server several times if he was sure that the dish was dairy-free and he said yes. Our evening was ruined after this incident and my sister had a horrible night afterwards. Our final days of our trip will be quite uncomfortable as it takes her body 48+ hours to process. They did comp the dish but had the gall to charge a 20% tip on the entire bill, which we had to wait to be removed as we tried to leave quickly to get to our rental. They also forgot to make my dish and I had to wait for it for a long time as others ate. read more

Good food, incompetent service - got served an allergen and they forgot one of our dishes Restaurant had great ambiance and the server was very friendly and eager but he was just as clueless. We had a dairy allergy in the group and the person dining asked what dishes had dairy and which ones could be adapted. The server confidently said the BLT had no dairy, so they ordered the BLT. After one bite, the person with the allergy new something was wrong. Indeed, there was both butter and cream in the BLT. They also forgot to bring out a bolognese for one of the other diners, so they had to wait to eat after everyone else. The food was indeed good - but we'll never come back nor do I recommend that anyone with dietary restrictions go here. Clearly, the staff is not trained and they are not informed of what is in the food. Just found my new favorite restaurant, and we were lucky enough to get a spot at the chef's counter. I'm always fascinated with watching the workings of a kitchen from the chef's counter. It makes the meal more personal and gives you appreciation for the passion and love that goes into each dish. To start, the chef gave us a flavorful and slightly spicy chicken wing to start. I could have eaten a ton of them, but the intent of peaking my interest in the dishes to follow worked. The super tender beef skewers were also outstanding. Their meat prep and temperature was perfect, so my wife and I went with the pork and I had the tri tip special. Both dishes were outstanding! I particularly liked how all the flavors paired so nicely together that it invited you to mix and match each bite instead of eating it separately. Some Yelpers mentioned the portion size was small for the price. Both dishes were plenty of food from my point of view and fairly priced. What an enjoyable experience on our second visit to Barley and Boar. After being seated it took us a bit to decide on our selections from their recently-updated menu. Our Starter: 5 Stars Pastrami brined, grass fed tri-tip skewers, with shiitake mushrooms, and fermented plum steak sauce. Ample (for 2), tender and delicious. Our Entrees: 5 stars - "The Pork" - Iberico pork, basil and coconut sauce, sweet potato croquette, frisée, broccolini, Thai basil. Outstanding. This dish was a well-balanced combination of delicately sweet, satisfyingly savory, surprisingly delectably goodness, and that croquette? Addictive. - "The Bird" - Tender chicken braised in onion miso jus, garlicky golden mashers, and savory carrots. Flavorful and delicious. We paired our entrees with glasses of petite sirah and cuvée. Our server, Darcy was simply delightful. She was attentive, knowledgeable and informative. Would like to return one evening soon to check out their late night happy hour, offered Tuesday - Saturday, from 9 pm to midnight. Had a date night here and the food & drinks were really good. The staff was inviting. Had 2 starters (bread & salad), 2 entrees, 2 desserts, & drinks. The atmosphere was nice, maybe a little crowded. My only complaint was the pricing. $14 for 4 pieces of bread and butter, $16 for a burrata salad that appears to be missing half the burrata. We spent well over $200 for 2 people and didn't have any leftovers. My husband can eat, but I usually take half my dinner home. We loved the bread pudding, but the doughnuts were a little dense for us. It's hard to want to go here again when we spend less at very good, "fancy" restaurant in Pismo that has a sunset ocean view. Prices seem steep for downtown Atascadero. It's definitely worth trying, but not affordable for frequent visits. read more

My husband and I went here tonight for an early dinner. The decor is sort of a rustic chic vibe. Our wait staff was friendly, attentive and helpful. We kept things simple by ordering just an entree each and started things off with a cocktail. They have a full bar, but also offer drinks made from their own distilled spirits. My husband ordered the 'Fit for a King' which is the restaurant's version of an Old Fashioned, made with a sweeter bourbon, a cinnamon simple syrup and walnut bitters. I thought it was SUPER tasty, and I usually find an Old Fashioned to be WAY TOO strong for me...but this sweeter version was very smooth. My husband, more of a traditionalist with this cocktail, so was not as much of a fan of this version. I had the 'Yes Queen' vodka based cocktail, which was as delicious & refreshing as it was visually appealing. For dinner, I had the vegetarian Risotto (I think called the Bloom), which was very tasty and prominently featured corn as the main flavor profile. The portion was healthy enough for me that I took about half of it home, but those with heartier appetites would likely finish it. My husband ordered the Burger, which featured Wagyu beef, Gruyère cheese and accompanied by steak style fries. The burger was juicy and flavorful, served on a brioche style bun. This small restaurant feels like it belongs in a big cosmopolitan area--but when you look around it's all us, all north county goodness somehow able to pay high prices for the best food in the whole area!
