If you're walking around Fox Point and happen to notice a pair of black doors with nothing more than "Bar" on them, do yourself a favor and go inside. That's exactly how we stumbled across Club Frills after dinner at Pizza Marvin, and I'm glad curiosity got the better of us. For anyone familiar with the area, this is in the old PVD Donuts space, but you would never know it once you're inside. The whole place has this nostalgic basement hangout vibe that instantly clicked with me. If you grew up in the '80s or '90s, the decor feels oddly familiar in the best way. It reminded me of the basement bar I always wished someone in the neighborhood had, complete with quirky touches that make you want to look around instead of staring at your phone. From the moment we walked in, everyone made us feel welcome. We ended up grabbing a table in one of the cozy corner rooms, which had an old fireplace converted into a television. It's a small detail, but it's exactly the kind of creative touch that gives the place its personality. The cocktails were excellent. Thoughtfully made, balanced, and priced right where I'd expect for a craft cocktail bar in Providence. The atmosphere struck a nice balance too. It was lively without feeling chaotic, and everyone working there genuinely seemed happy to be there. When it was time to leave, the bartender, who I think may have been the owner, actually came around from behind the bar to chat with us. He asked how we found the place, what we thought, and where we were headed next for the evening. It didn't feel rehearsed or like customer service for the sake of customer service. It felt like someone who was genuinely proud of what they'd built. Club Frills has a ton of character, fantastic drinks, and the kind of hospitality that's getting harder to find these days. A weird experience.... We walked in and waited by the front door and the "Please wait to be seated" sign for a few minutes. No one helped us, so we walked to the bar and ordered. The bartender told us the drinks were covered by the host, which is when we realized it was a private party in the entire space. We told them we weren't part of the party and paid for drinks, but apparently we never should've been let in. No one stopped us at the front door. No sign. No post on their website saying they were closed for a private event. No post on their Instagram. Feels like whatever system they were trying to implement to enforce a private party totally broke down. The employees were very nice about it at the very least. We got two drinks: the Isuzu and the grape cobbler. The grape cobbler was okay - sweet but not much else going on. The Isuzu was SO bitter and I didn't like it. The description on the menu didn't match the drink at all. I wanted to like it here, and I've heard great things. However, it was such a bad experience and we didn't like the drinks, so I'm not sure we will be back. read more

So I took my sister here because it was restaurant week and I saw where this is a James Beard nominee. We were greeted at the door by a very pleasant woman,who seated us at a cozy table. The special was a dirty martini and a dirty martini burger. A dirty martini consists of a humongous hamburger patty , with outrageously delicious cheese and an olive. My sister opted out of the martini and had the burger sans olive. I tried the caviar hot dog,which is lobster, scallops and shrimp rolled into the shape of a hot dog and topped with caviar. The texture was not pleasing to my palate, though I ate half of it. I also opted for a lemon drop martini, which was ok. The owner came over and we discovered his birthday was that day. As a bd treat to me, he sent over what looked like gigantic onion rings. Actually it was dehydrated onions, loaded with mozzarella cheese. The outside was crispy and the inside was gooey. This bar is so fun and creative -- I've been in twice now and have had so much fun both times. A friend and I stopped in for a quick drink and appetizer and were greeted by the loveliest (and truly most delicious) welcome shot I've ever had. We both ordered the same drink, the Chamo-Pants, mine without alcohol and hers with, and enjoyed the uniqueness of everything on the menu! Super friendly service. Tried a few cocktails and all were solid. One guest was drinking N/A and out of the two options one was not available leaving one which was unfortunate. I get it though as I used to bartend and we ripped on people who ordered N/A but these days I think it's best to have two options at least. I'd heard a lot about this new cocktail spot and all I can say is - BELIEVE THE HYPE! The ambiance is very retro, in a good way. It feels like an homage to dive bars of the 80s and 90s. There's wood paneling, vintage signs and pictures and cozy nooks, all in a dark room, dimly lit with a neon glow. The cocktails are some of the most inventive and delicious I've had. There's no overly sweet, basic crap here! My friend had the Clarisa which was made with clarified goat milk. It has an intriguing deep, sort of savory flavor. My drink, the High Horse was refreshing, tangy and complex. All the flavors were perfectly balanced. We shared a Mai Tai Baba for dessert and I could have happily eaten two of them. A soft cream-filled bun was infused with the rich tropical flavors of rum, coconut and citrus. Truly delightful! Our server was friendly, attentive and super helpful with explaining the menu and recommendations. I definitely want to go back and try more drinks and food. read more

I stopped in after dinner to grab some drinks during their Tuesday half-off special and tried the Mango Sticky Punch, the Sapphire, and the Hemenway Daiquiri. The Mango Punch was a clarified cocktail with interesting flavors. The Sapphire had a bit too much ice, but it was still very good. The daiquiri was just as amazing. Club Frills felt like a cool retro bar with some interesting drinks! I got a drink that had pandan and ube, flavors that I haven't seen in cocktails in Providence. I had to try it, and I was surprisingly pleased by the flavor! Most pandan cocktails tend to just taste more like coconut, but I felt like I could actually taste the pandan here. My friend also got a yuzu drink which was refreshing. We wanted something sweet, so we got the yawgoo mountain dessert (the only dessert item they have). It was shaved ice (somewhat similar to bingsoo) with strawberries in many different ways! There were real strawberries, strawberry jelly, and what tasted like strawberry candy/gummies). It was pretty good and all the strawberry items were a nice surprise. I would go again to try some of their other drinks! read more

Stopped by to check out this new spot with a friend on a Friday evening and while the vibe was great, the drinks were mostly ice and mediocre at best. I got the pere ube while my friend got the melona which were not only priced slightly higher than other bars in the area but also tasted two-dimensional and similar (sweet, heavy on the anise, somewhat creamy). It lacked the depth and dimension I seek in a drink, which was disappointing as I wanted to love it more based on the description's flavor profiles. What was lacking in the drinks was made up for with the thoughtfulness of the design and setup-- we loved what they did with the space with a main space with disco lights near the bar to a smaller sitting/dining room off to the side and allowing for more intimate conversation. I was introduced by someone I've come to respect in the food community so I will wax poetic. RI is a culinary destination for me, it's sacred ground. Those who walk the path are storied. The owners and staff are these kind of people. Absolutely intelligent bar, well stocked. Cocktail list, profound. The snacks, culinary ridiculousness. The owner was there working on a new syrup for a future state cocktail, and he was standing on business that his bartender approved. That's science, that's poetry, that's Club Frills. I had the Antelope which was a clarified cocktail that was a dupe of a fresh ambrosia at a picnic. The margarita with the sea foam was exceptional. But, I'm gonna shock you to your core, it was the Jell-O shot for me. The deviled Ramos which is a gin, condensed milk, passion fruit and orange blossom in the shape of a deviled egg. The flavor was so complex and such a journey for a shot! It's very clear to me that this crew is all business behind the bar and in the kitchen. I left in awe, with full belly and a LOT of bragging rights. Ives is where it's at and Club Frills is not messing around and for that I'll be back EVERY time I'm in town and you should too! read more
