I went in recently at a time when the covid vaccine is not yet widely distributed but was issued to the public about a week ago. I convinced my wife to join since I'm a member so we can go together but she never goes and just pay the monthly. I got ambushed by the woman at the counter and asked me to voluntarily pay an extra $10 a month because they need money to keep the gym open. I'm already paying for 2 memberships; one that my wife doesn't use. Normally, when fees are increased, we get an email and a new contract saying that we have an option to terminate or pay higher fees. I declined to answer the question and have to think about it since I'm not here to discuss my bills but to work out and relax. They rationalize that I should pay more for community reasons of helping the gym stay open but I wonder if they will charge less once the covid vaccine is widely distribute and business returns to normal. I think they would just rationalize and keep it as their "profit?" since they are a business and chuck all the rosy community brotherhood talk out the window and just keep your money. But, ultimately, it was incredibly rude and unprofessional to persist and keep asking me the same question for more money over and over, causing a scene with the other gym patrons when I said i want time to think about it. That is, I said I want time to answer. But she just repeated the question and ignored my request for more time. She then kept pushing more aggressively for an answer and wouldn't let me go work out. I just started walking away and she persisted and said we can discuss after your work out maybe - like she wants an answer now and is aware she's pressuring me and I feel pressured, which is exactly her goal. Now it's like Im scared to go back since they might recognize me and keep harrassing me for more money. My wife has a membership that she doesn't use and if I keep getting scared to go back and keep getting harassed I think we should terminate our membership. Unprofessional. Rude. The gym is very small and local. Not very busy at all. Not terribly price either. Very very small parking lot. So if you go prime time to the gym when they have classes you may be circling for a parking spot. Trainers there are very knowledgeable and fairly priced. They have a shake bar there but the person working the front desk is usually in charge of it. So if they are busy you are going to have to wait for that shake. read more

So I'm a new memeber and decided to join because it's 1/2 way on my commute to work and they offered me a month to month contract...would NOT have signed up for a year because if I lose my job or get a new one and want to use another Club Metro I would have to pay $3.00 EVERYTIME I go to another gym because they are a franchise. So they got me with $20 a month for month to month. OK so here's what I think: GOOD STUFF ~Location is right off Rt. 17 South, right before Rt. 3 - easy to get to (no side street driving) ~I go in the AM before work and it's pretty quite. Most people don't use the locker room/shower when I do. ~Tons of machines ~Fun classes ~Cardio theater room NOT SO GOOD STUFF ~The music they play is HORRIBLE. I'm a fan of all TYPES of music but I don't think it's appropriate to blast music in the gym with foul language and suggestive material. I personally don't want to hear that stuff myself but it REALLY bothers me that they have a day care service while you work out and children are hearing it. If I had a child I would DEMAND that they do NOT play anything like that over the loud speaker for them to hear. Since I don't have children I just pop in my ear buds and ignore what they are playing...but really, it's completely INAPPROPRIATE! ~The water pressure in the shower and sinks are pretty low. Takes longer to rince my hair out as well as wash my hands well in the sink. I wish it was adjustable. I know they are probably trying to save water but it takes me twice as long to take a shower since it's so hard to rinse the shampoo and conditioner out my hair. ~Some of the staff members are not as friendly and as outgoing as other business that I go to. I usually don't get a good morning greeting as I walk in, even tho someone is at the front desk... ~For the most part, the gym is clean, including the bathrooms, but the showers are not ask clean as I would hope. I do not think it's a lack of staff or effort on the employees but I think it's the lack of water pressure in the showers. I don't see how they can clean well with such a fine mist of a shower. ~Many of the machines have something wrong with them. I brought it to someones attention and was told not to worry because they always have someone go around and fix the machines. I've been a member for about 2 weeks now...I've never seen a repair man and the machines with problems are still the same way. ~Sometimes you can have some yappers in the theater room...I know this isn't the gyms fault because it's about other people working out but they should put up signs and advise that the theater room is a quiet room. If you want to talk, go to other machines outside the room. No need to be in the theater room yapping your trap. It's rude and annoying. Well, Like most "20 dollar gyms" this one has progressively gone down hill...it is a lot more crowded now, some machines have issues (broken headphone jacks, no tv, or out of order occasionally) One of the main problems is that they have young kids "working" the desk. Good luck if you want to speak to someone who can actually log a trainer appointment or help with anything really. They put a new manager in place, so hopefully he will turn it around. read more

While this $20 a month-to-month contract gym may seem like a great bet...think again! What they don't explain to you is if you ever decide to cancel the membership...which my mom tried to...they will just talk you into suspending the membership which is supposedly the same thing but NOT. After months of still getting her account automatically debited for the monthly fee even though her membership was cancelled, my mother had to call in each month and speak to the manager about getting the credit back. First of all, when an account is suspended, there shouldn't be ANY fees whatsoever. And it should've have been so hard to get the credit back each month as it was. Secondly, they don't know what's going on there with the gym and the bank or accounting department. Once she finally cancelled the membership after months of utter frustration, someone else contacts her about a fee of $150 she must pay. WTF? I have no idea where this "fee" comes from because they certainly don't tell you about it when you sign up for the "month-to-month" contract. As all gym memberships goes, this one definitely bites the dust! They are not upfront about fees so don't be fooled if you plan on cancelling your membership. OK. I am a gym enthusiast. So this review is going to be as elaborate as possible. Ok first off, This gym (for this location) deserves no more than 2 stars. - Price - They were running a deal $9.99 a month, so I signed up. It's actually $150 initiation fee (whatever they initiate) + $30 some other maintenance fee so it comes down to $180 to join. Then no contract just $10 a month forever. Alternatively you can join with a one year contract for $20 a month, first and last months dues upfront + $30 maintenance fee. So I did my math since I always go to gym and this is a regular thing for me, it made more sense over 2 years time. Now, I came from one of the best gyms in NYC, NYHRC. Coming from a club-like place to this gym, is a bit shocking, seriously. No I am not going to compare them both since HRC is $100 a month where this is $10. - My Complaints - Nobody puts their weights back!!! This is very very annoying. Dumbells/barbells all over the place. Weight rack is also not marked with weight numbers. So you don't even know where to put your dumbbell. Management is not enforcing this as there are no employee on the floor. There's absolutely only one(1) employee on the whole area that takes cares of the locker room, never saw him on the actual work out floor. Music is too loud. You can barely hear your headphones, unless you crank them and hurt your ear. TVs always I mean always on the same ESPN channel. There are around 4-5 TVs on the floor and they show one of two things at any given time, it's either Basketball or Football. Now, what's make them think we want to watch a college basketball game every night. Watching all those TVs on the same channel, I feel like I am in Best Buy shopping for a TV, it is really bothersome to me. Theater is a joke. Treadmills in the theater are horrendous, oh no they do work but they make an incredible amount of noise you CAN'T hear the TV. You can't make out what they say, so it kills the experience fully. I told this to reception but I know it won't be fixed, as it's already been a month. It's relatively a small gym. It gets REALLY crowded around 5-6. This creates parking problem. Sometimes you gotta follow people leaving to gym like a freak to get their parking. No shampoo, OK you might say for $10 a month what do you expect, ok fair enough. No towel service, once again OK $10 a month can't complain about that. - Goods - People at the reception are friendly, nobody with stick up to their buxxs or don't-want2-be-here atttiude so that's good. Obviously $10 or $20 a month depending on how you sign up. I notice that there were around 5 treadmills broken, they did fixed them. So stuff gets fixed when they brake (theater is another story though). but TV channels are very limited. My company is paying for my fitness, so I am going to cancel to go elsewhere. Ok, first things first. The staff at the Gym, is NOT nasty and unprofessional. I just joined 2 weeks ago and from the very first encounter I had with anyone at the desk to now, everyone was awesome. If you want a member to jump at your arrival and roll out a red carpet, go to a spa not a gym. Gym is located a few blocks from Rutherford train station. I am training with Anthony and Danny. Both AWESOME trainers! very professional and skilled and friendly and push me enough to challenge me and get results but are not the in your face, drill sergeant, jillian michaels type that I can't work with. I am sure their other trainers are awesome as well but I couldn't have made a better choice then them, and i look forward to the lean, fit, toned new body I will achieve within the next few months of hard work with their guidance and help every step of the way. Gym is very clean and great size. Not huge and not small. Can't say anything about bathroom/showers and such since I shower at home, have yet to use the ladies room/locker. A ton of cardio machines and equipment and good amount of free weights. The only thing I would change is i would like to see more mini lockers for small items storage since l love those and can't ever get one cause everyone else loves them too! :) Listen, you want a gym where you can get a good workout in on your own or train with someone if you need it and are like me, clueless as to what to do and what machines are right for you etc, this is the gym for you. Oh and they have a lot of classes which I will check out soon. p.s some people are complaining about the prices of the shakes? of course its gonna be a little more expensive than making your own! every gym charges more than $2 for shakes, why don't you just buy a shaker at GNC and a some protein powder and make it yourself at home? Not sure who the Martha Stewart is of the gym. But the layout is terrible. The owner should have purchased more land or should do so. There is no room to workout freely in the evenings. The classes were at the time the only saving grace. And even that was all dependent upon the instructors. Erika and Frans classes are always geared towards any level of fitness. They knew how to make everyone feel comfortable in their own skin and allow you to increase your personal best. I don't know how or why they let them go. They always had a packed classes and new comers were always welcome. If they open their own facility I would sign up just because of the teaching methods and comfort I have felt. In terms of times to go basically either get here at the crack of dawn or alter your workout to just a treadmill and maybe some weights. The movie theater is a snooze nothing to write about a small space that rarely has decent movies. The music selection is a bit odd so bring your headphones and your greatest playlist! The layout is changing every other month or week I can't keep up. I enjoy and prefer the other clubs like Old Bridge and Jersey City. The staff is hit and miss the morning crew is better than the evening. The evening crew are a bunch of younger guys who spend more time working out and joking around than attending to customer service. The weights are always all over the place which is funny because I wonder what the ppl that work there get paid to do. Things go broken for months machines get added pretty soon the entire facility will be machines and benches. The bathrooms could be cleaner. I don't know what happened but over the last six months this gym has has become disappointing. Oh and watch your statements they charge whatever whenever!!! I have been coming here to this gym for almost a year and I like it. There is not a shortage of cardio machines...even during peak hours. I have a few favorite staff members that are always friendly to my man and I when we come to work out. Our personal trainer, Anthony A., is the best EVER! He helped my hubby get into shape and also helped him to lose 50 lbs. There are a few "meat heads" that frequent the free weights area but they are tolerable and you still have your few that sit on machines and text and talk on their cells and hold up the machines when others who do work out need to use them. I went in for a day trial. It's a really nice and clean gym. BUT the weight floor is too small. People don't put away the dumbbells. When I went there it was already really cold outside and they had the AC on. I was freezing the whole time I was exercising. It's not 24 hours and I ended up having to leave before my workout was done. Yeah walk outside and i was even more cold. It was a bit full when I went so I can't imagine how packed the weight floor would be from 3pm to 7pm. read more

Went in for a day trial. I had a horrible experience with a member that was wearing his face mask on his chin. I let the girl at the front desk know he was not adhering to the rules of the gym. She let him know and his response was to verbally attack me, scream profanities at me and threaten me. He also called me a racist. I left the gym as quickly as I could. I waited a week for a Manager (Liz) to call me and did not hear from her till I called her again tonight. She basically took the side of the "paying customer", nothing was done. I recently moved across the country where I went to a 24 hr fitness, and loved it. After we moved I needed something closer to home than the nearest 24 hour fitness was and after much research I settled with Club Metro. I don't use the actual gym floor much, although my husband does and finds it adequate. He goes early AM and has no issues with weights and treadmills... I go to the 9am classes and love them. Fran has been instructing for YEARS and she knows what works. She gets it done! Coming from a large gym where I took the Les Mills classes and Turbo Kick it IS an adjustment, but I get no less of a workout! If you stick to it you'll learn that it works. That being said it would be nice if they had a larger classroom and new weights for the classes. I'd say 80% of the weights are truly awful... and the mechanism they have for storing the weights is awful as well. No complaints otherwise. To the person with social problems... Get over the "clique" issue. Everywhere has their own cliquey girls. School, gym, the office... It's life. Maybe you should introduce yourself and make a friend and you won't feel so lonely. read more

The club metro is really unfriendly and especially the managers are the worst. This is the first time I have ever been treated like this. We were on family membership, but, my daughters went college of out of state so we have canceled two daughters first on last summer and after six months we canceled for our couple last winter around Christmas. However, only one child and one of the couple was canceled. We definitely visited and canceled two of them each time...what happened? I try to explain to a manager, but, she doesn't listen to me and only what she wants to say. Is this manager? It was really bad. I really do not want to recommend this fitness club. Repeated calls & a scheduled visit finally got me a sit down with someone claiming to be a manger, turns out the day my cancellation was supposed to go through, the gym changed management (what a convenient coincidence) & my cancelation request somehow vanished. FINALLY got the cancelation through, fast forward a few months, low & behold the automatic payments are still being billed to my credit card. More calls, dispute... Gym itself is adequate, kind of what one would get for the price. Clean & what they lack in free weights they make up for in cardio machines. That would warrant only 3 stars but I can't leave out the frustration with membership & management. Hence, 1 star. read more

It has been nine months after the cancellation. I have since spoken to the outsourced billing department and they agree that according to the contract and records I do not have a balance. However, the calls did not stop from the gym for their $21.95. Since, I am no longer residing in the NYC area, I sent my mother in to pay the phantom balance around the six month mark. I have not heard anything from them since. I have my receipts for the payment filed away for good measure, Slippery business practices. I recommend looking elsewhere for a gym. So what can I say. I have left plenty of reviews about this place and not much changes. First off the staff for the most part is great. There is one trainer there that is apparently some sort of manager. She is an awful person. Seriously if your goal is drive away members she is accomplishing that goal. After years of going here I finally got a notification from my bank of suspicious activity on my credit card. After reading everyone else's posts here I see that this is common at this place as this is the only place that has my credit card info. I prefer to pay cash for everything for this exact reason and at other gyms this was always fine but here the insist on having your credit card on file. So I cancelled my card and didn't give them my new one. I pay cash at the counter and that will never change. It was also brought to my attention that after years of paying for classes I one didn't know I was paying for and never took and two was never told I was signed up for that was readjusted but they would not give me back my money. Another thing machines just disappear there. I found out the owner brings them to the other location in Union City. Well what am I paying maintenance and upgrade fees if you don't maintain or upgrade anything? Finally and this really might not have anything to do with the gym itself but it is packed with people who are there just to occupy space. I'm seriously into working out. I'm in there at least two hours a day. There are too many casual users and kids there. I started looking into going to Powerhouse. Although further from my house it is a serious gym and there aren't old people sitting on machines for an hour having conversations. Walked in and out of this gym today in less than 5 minutes. I was greeted nicely by the girl at the desk who was pleasant the entire time I was there. I told her I was interested in speaking to someone about a membership. She introduced me to a gentleman who she called the sales manager, who after he finished chugging a Gatorade and "catching his breath" said hello to me. He did not introduce himself, ask my name or anything. He grabbed a piece of paper and told me things were very simple. $0 down 19.99/month and a $25 service fee. I would have to pay for last month upfront as well. I explained that I'd like to try out the gym before I signed up. His response was to tell me I needed to print out a pass from online, or pay $10 to use the gym. Why would I sign up for or even pay $10 for a gym I had never even been showed around. If he doesn't want me to workout sure, how about touring the gym, explaining the benefits of his gym. This guy was arrogant and condescending, if he was my employee and was treating potential customers the way he treated me in such a short time there would be a major issue. I will absolutely not be returning to this gym. I'd rather pay more for a gym with people that might treat you with some respect before asking for money. One of the worst places I've been! First off, I had to wrangle with them for five days to get the tanning option included in my membership as promised. I actually had to print the ad from the internet and bring it in for proof. The other issue was that a manager had to give their ok and they're never there. The place is very small and once you've been there for a day or two you realize why the membership is so cheap. It looks like the gym was originally one big room that was partitioned. There's very limited machines and a tiny room for classes. I took two classes, one with a male instructor and one female. I don't know if they were married but they were a perfect match of bossy, sarcastic, and cross. Neither one ever introduced themselves to the class nor did anything that might be considered pleasant, especially the female. I don't know what they were trying to prove but they sure made me not want to exercise or even be in the same room with them! I can't see why anyone would want to subject themselves to being abused and talked to like a 2nd grader in those classes One can find so many better places to go these days than this place. A big gym like Ballys, for instance, even for the same $20, would put this place to shame- in the variety of machines and classes and in really personable instructors that you can actually have a conversation with. I've just finished a 7 month go-round with these folks. First, they continued charging me for personal training monthly even when I told them that they should only be charging me when I actually USE sessions (I work far away and their trainers aren't very flexible when it comes to meeting a schedule I can commit to). Then when I finally went to cancel my membership, they charged me again the next month and when I finally got a hold of someone who could do anything about it, he acted like he was doing me a huge favor refunding this charge. This location is apparently under new management but their solution for my unused sessions was to have me rejoin to use them up while I'm already a member at NYSC that has better locations, better facilities, and better class schedules. At this point I'm writing off the $270 they as good as stole from me. If you just want free weights this place might be good enough for you but otherwise, don't even bother. read more

Well, since my last review things have changed the shady sales manager, I refer to as the "rat" has now left and has made for a much more pleasureable experience. There is also more knowledgeable and friendly front desk staff and people you're happy to see when you walk into the gym. The price is right as is the location. At $20 a month, this gym is better than other similar gyms in the area. It's not fair to compare with the $60+ gyms like 24fitness or the Giant's one. All I'm looking for is a place to use a treadmill or an elliptical machine, and do some basic weights, which I found myself very satisfied at Club Metro. My only complaint is that there are people who steal at the gym. During my first visit, I put my under armour pants in my zipped coat pocket and hung it on the coat rack by the entrance. Well the pants were stolen but the coat wasn't. Weird. The thief must have thought it was something valuable and took it. Since then I've been using the locker. So I've been here for a while now and I really like it. Lots of equipment and few people, at least when I go but then again, I go either early in the morning or late at night. So now, we'll starts with 5 stars and work our way down to three stars. +1 Smoothies are pretty delicious -1 Smoothies are pretty expensive. $5+ for a smoothie the size of half a water bottle? Ummm, no thanks -1 I was drinking a smoothie when i felt something weird in my mouth. It was a small piece of shredded grape skin, or so I thought. I took it out and what do I see but plastic. Plastic. In my smoothie. My expensive, $5+ smoothie. WHAT? +1 Employees there seem friendly. -1 How is it that every time I need help and want to talk to one of them that they're all chitchatting with one of their friends? Most of the time, the people they're talking to are members of the gym so, I suppose they're trying to be nice. -1 They seem to be a bit unprofessional at times because when you finally get their attention so that they can help you, they tell you they'll be right back and go straight back to talking with their friends again. So all in all, I suppose it's a pretty good gym. I mean, the facilities are pretty impressive (like a theatre) and what else do you do but work out? The employees, I'm sure, mean well but my god, I wish they take a little bit of that effort to make everyone feel welcome into helping people with their problems. One last thing: prices. The whole $19.99 is a bit misleading. Yeah it $19.99, so long as you sign up for a 2 year contract. If you simply want a 1 year contract, it's the same price but you have to pay an additional $180. The price of the gym seems fair but you should come and see how crowded it is in rush hours. be also very careful about the membership agreement. They hide things in the agreement since nobody really reads the agreement. Even tough I paid in time my membership fee, when I wanted to cancel, they charged me for another month that i cannot really go. The most irritating thing is the attitude you receive from them when they are sure that you are indeed cancelling the membership. They immediately change and be rude. People need to stop complaining on here about Club Metro in Rutherford. It's clean, friendly staff and it's 10x better than Powerhouse gym, Retro Fitness and the NY Giants gym. As 20 dollar a month gyms go, Club Metro isn't a bad choice for the money. Their hours are reasonable, for me at least. I work at home and go during the mid-morning or early afternoon and I never have to wait for a cardio machine or a weight bench. I've heard the place can get very crowded between 5 and 7 so you may want to plan accordingly. Plenty of parking. As usual, there are always a couple of cardio machines out of order, but less than other gyms I've gone go to. And if you saw how people beat up these machines, it's no surprise a few will be out of commission from time to time. The place is pretty clean and I always see an attendant cleaning something somewhere. The bathrooms are okay for a place where multiple strangers shower etc... The staff is not unfriendly, but they seem a bit distant and more concerned with talking with their fellow staff than the customers. Trying to catch a counterperson's eye can be a bit tiresome. They need to focus on the customer, not who has got to pay what share of the Chinese food they had delivered. If you want a smoothie, it will take a while because no seems to know how to make one. Whenever I ask a question, the person I'm talking to always has to turn to another staff for the answer. They need to fix that. What I like about Metro is the absence of "meat heads" or power lifters grunting and screaming. They keep that stuff contained rather well. There are people of all fitness levels there, so you don't have an inferiority complex the moment you walk in. You've got young kids, middle agers like me and a smattering of old timers. You do get the occasional idiot who sits on a machine talking on his cell phone while you're waiting to use it, but bad behavior in my experience is rare. Metro is not some sort of uber gym and I think people on Yelp who want the moon and the stars for a twenty dollar a month gym have unrealistic expectations. 1# Beware of the one year contract. You will get opposite answer from receptionists, ABC financial and at last your credit cards will be charged even after you cancel the membership. 2# This place is supposed to open at 7 on the weekends. Few times I waited there until 7:45 and went back home. 3# Movie theater is nice, but broken machine was generating annoying sound did not give a good experience to watch movie 4# They are playing horrible music. read more

Lots of equipment but only 2 stairmasters. Frequently a wait. In a year of suggestions they have not fixed the lockers. 25% don't lock. The music is awful. read more

Do NOT use this gym!! They have broken equipment that takes forever to fix. The owner Jonathan is a liar and the wife that married him for his money isn't any better. Phony as the day is long! It takes a lot to make me write a negative review but they deserve zero stars. Over the years I sent them many many new members, but it's gone down hill. A friend of mine still goes there and they are always finding washers and screws that fall out of the machines. He's quitting next week! My biggest complaint is trying to get out of membership. They make it so difficult. I was in an accident and my brother was paying my bills I haven't been to the gym in over 2 yrs. i explained to Christina office manager and she said there wasn't much they could do. I sent a Dr.s note that detailed how I almost died from a lung blood clot. I'm back better stronger now! Not to this small busted gym. but a better one. Try Blink or even Crunch. You'll be glad you did. They just raised the rate again at Metro Rutherford, with worse service. Don't be the next victim. They are NOT good people!!! Beware of hidden fees and cancelation policy. I canceled my membership and continued to get charged monthly and late fees.

I only signed up for the convenience of its location for me to be able to workout after my night shift. So, mornings are less crowded. Peak hours are usually packed. It's a little small to my liking. Lots of cardio machines, not enough weight machines. There's a theatre room, but I never use it. Some of the weight machines are broken and never get fixed. The staff chat too much to each other and don't acknowledge you. Not even a greeting. They forget to do something if I ask for their help. They get too caught up in their conversations. And for 5am opening, weights aren't put back. Some people can't carry a 45lb weight off the bar! Be considerate. I asked for one of the staff to help me remove someone else's weights and he said "I'll help you in a sec" and continued to talk to his coworker and then another coworker while I waited for his help for 15-20 minutes. I must say that the bathroom stalls are clean as well as the lockers. Can't say the same for the drains in the showers. It's as if they haven't been cleaned before opening up. Pretty gross. I won't be renewing my membership when it's over. read more
