First off such a vibe- you feel like you are being transported to a tropical vacay and in a very esthetic way. We seated ourselves at a booth since it wasn't quite busy and that just means more room for our food and drinks to spread out *teehee* The cocktails were amazing my cousin ordered the espresso martini which she loved they make the espresso fresh. I went with a gin cocktail that had coconut flavors something I would never consider with gin but if you read my reviews you know gin is my preferred spirit. It was so good! For two people we ordered three types of empanadas we probably could have gotten away with two flavors and maybe a lighter tapa or desert but really wanted to try the cheese and guava empanada and didn't want that to be a main option in case we didn't like it. Needless to say we really liked all three: picadillo, arroz con pollo and guava and cheese - the picadillo was the favorite however both for the inside flavor and the accompanying dip. This is my second visit to Coabana and I like the old food menu better. They used to offer plantain chips with Guacamole which was very tasty. Since then they have removed the plantain chips and still offer mashed plantains...and a very small serving. I ordered a cuban sandwich which was good but I guess I expected it to look more appealing on a plate such as with garnish. Since it was the middle of June it was already hot outside at a cool 105 degrees temperature. We were surprised to see the restaurant had the front door propped completely open letting the hot air into the restaurant. Since this is a small restaurant you really couldn't escape the heat. Went here for brunch and honestly the whole place is super cute and gives very tropical/photo dump vibes. The decor is really aesthetic and the outdoor seating was probably my favorite part. Definitely one of those places where everyone's taking pics of their drinks first lol. Food was actually pretty good too. Portions were decent and everything looked really pretty plated. Drinks were strong enough and fun without tasting overly sugary. I liked the vibe more than the actual food though if I'm being real -- some dishes were amazing while others were just okay for the price. It does get pretty loud and busy, especially on weekends, so service can be a little slow when packed. Nothing horrible, just not the place to go if you want something super chill and quiet. Since moving to Phoenix in January, I have been to Coabana four times. It's safe to say that this Cuban bar has become one of my favorite watering holes in town. Since they're located downtown (and actually the heart of downtown), parking isn't easy. If you'd like to be close, you'll have to pay for metered street parking, a surface lot, or a parking garage. If you're okay to walk 20 minutes or so (like me), you can find free parking. I've also Uber'd there, too. Coabana is located super close to venues like PHX Arena and Stand-Up Live. Ambiance (4.5/5): Think of a fresh, Latin vibe. Pink and turquoise make up the main color scheme. They have a few tables outside, tables inside, bar seating, and booths. I've sat at the bar each time. Coabana is a small bar, it probably fits 30 people or so, but I've never had trouble finding a seat. Service (4.5/5): Another area where Coabana shines. The bartenders greet you upon arrival, they bring you water without you asking, and almost every single time, they're attentive and efficient. This is the type of service I appreciate. I hate having to wait a long time to order my drinks or having to flag down a bartender. This is not what you'll experience at Coabana. Food (3.5/5): I've only had food once at Coabana. I absolutely love Cuban food. Here, the menu is a bit limited. Some of the Cuban hallmarks are there, while others aren't. While you can have a full meal here, I see it more so as a place for small bites. While I wish they had a more extensive menu, I'll take it. The time I did eat, I had the Cuban sandwich with plantain chips. The Cuban sandwich, though it wasn't invented in Cuba (it was invented in Florida), is one of the most popular Cuban dishes out there. They do it pretty well here. But you know why I'm at Coabana... Drinks (4.5/5): I'm through and through a cocktail guy and Coabana has a lovely menu of craft cocktails. While rum is the focus, you'll find everything here. You'll find cocktails you would expect at a Cuban spot like mojitos. You'll find fun group drinks like Scorpion Bowls. You'll find the opportunity to roll the dice with a mystery shot (that rotates). You'll find many cocktails with a creative blend of flavors. The effort is there and I'm here for it. I've never had a cocktail at Coabana that wasn't exceptional. O got the Coabana Espressoitini and shared the Cubano sandwich, Ropa Vieja Empanadas, and the guava and Cheese Empanadas. Food 10/10 eating the sandwich I just kept wanting more and same with the Ropa Viejo empanadas. The sandwich was full of flavor and was juicy with a nice subtle crunch to the bread. The empanadas crust was just the right amount of crunch but still soft and pillowy flakey texture and the sprinkled seasoning on the outside and the delicious flavor inside will have you wanting more. I enjoyed the guava and cheese empanadas no complaints but they don't leave you craving more the way the other 2 dishes do. The dipping sauce for the ropa viejo is amazing too, reminds me of chimichurri sauce. I definitely will be coming back for this sandwich and empanadas. An incredible place for a small bites and drinks! I love empanadas and really enjoyed the ones they have. We shared the Picadillo Empanadas and Pork Masitas with plantains. I was in town visiting Scottsdale and Phoenix for the weekend, and a friend recommended this spot. I'm so glad we came here for dinner and drinks before our concert at Chase Field. It truly felt like a hidden gem! It wasn't too crowded when we arrived, and I immediately loved the music, decor, and overall vibe. I went with a group of four friends, and we all ended up ordering the same thing: the Picadillo Empanadas and wow, they were amazing! We also shared the Pork Masitas appetizer, which came with house-made guacamole topped with roasted pork. We added plantains on the side, and it was the perfect combo. Coming from a Colombian family and being a big fan of Latin food, I can confidently say this place passes the flavor test with flying colors. It's been awhile since we had been to Coabana. There have been some changes since the last time we were there. There is definitely a Cuban feel here. Across the back of the bar are large gold banana leaves - so cool! There are little niches in the wall in front of the booths with painted tiles that form pictures of palm trees and parrots. The walls are pink and the checkered floors look perfect with the Cuban theme. There are some large paintings on the wall. And Pit Bull watches over everything from up high. Our server, who was the bartender, was super friendly. This is a bar with food, rather than a restaurant. We went to grab food and drinks before the Lainey Wilson concert. It's the perfect location because it's super close to Phoenix Arena, only a few blocks away. The drink menu is fun, lots of RUM drinks! I had the Coabana Mojito and my friend had the Pina Colada. Both were delicious and looked so good too! The food menu is full of Cuban dishes with latin flavors. We ordered the ceviche with a combination of plantain and tortilla chips. The ceviche was fresh, with lots of flavor. Next time I would order it with all plantain chips. They were crunchy, slightly sweet, but also savory and salty, yum! Only came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. Yes, the space is cute and Instagram-worthy, but that's where the positives end. I am usually not the type to write low reviews, but I am very upset with the dining experience. Ordered the Cubano sandwich for $16, and let's just say it was all looks, no flavor. Way overpriced for what tasted like a sad deli sandwhich. The plantain chips were also so salty. Service was so inefficient and they charged a 20% gratituity for our party when they barely checked in on us. They probably knew that since our party was so huge that they didn't need to tend to us bc of the automatic gratituity per their policy. Had to keep looking for a server to just get a glass of water refill. Also the water was very very smelly like sink water. To top it off, they don't validate parking. Located near CityScape and the Urban Outfitters, it can be a bit tricky to find parking around here (atleast for us), but once you do, this spot is right down the road from The Angry Butcher, Little Ritual and a ton of other gems. Props to our server- I arrived about 30 minutes before my friend, and grabbed a table instead of a bar seat anticipating our group to be a party of three. Folks came in with larger parties and they respectfully let me keep my placement while I sipped a hibiscus drink solo without feeling intrusive to their dinner flow crowd. Beyond the service, know that seating is intimate (so def not ideal for large parties) but the vibes are immaculate. When you're craving chicken and rice, guava cheese, or empanadas at dinner time this is def a contender! All of the staff we interacted with were helpful and nice! We tried the guava and cheese empanadas and the Cubano nachos. Both plates were absolutely incredible, especially the nachos. I would recommend those to everyone, and it's a very generous serving, enough to share between 2 people, if not more. We also got a round of Hola Barbie shots which were so fun and pretty! I tried a special mezcal drink they had featured called Smoke, Spice and Everything Nice. The drink presentation was fun and smokey. The place is beautiful with a great vibe, but the service left a bad taste. We stopped by around 10:30 PM after a comedy show and asked if the kitchen was still open. The bartender said no, fair enough, but when my friend, who hadn't heard, asked about dessert, she snapped, "I said the kitchen is closed." Totally unnecessary attitude. We ordered $6 mystery shots but were charged $9 for Key Lime instead. When I politely pointed it out, she got defensive and questioned if I was sure. The shots were red, not green, and the bar was nearly empty, no way we were confused with another order. She ended up refunding it and charging us correctly, but not without making a comment about not arguing over $2. It's not about the money, it's about the experience and the attitude.
