People arrive early with blankets, picnic baskets, snacks, and drinks, creating such a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere before the show even begins. A few tips from our experience: There is a large free parking lot, and it's well organized with bright signs leading you all the way to the performance area. Even though it was our first visit, finding the venue wasn't difficult--it just felt like a fun little adventure! Even on a Wednesday, the crowd was surprisingly large, so arriving early is definitely worth it. (Independent Shakespeare Co.) Bring a blanket, but don't forget a small cushion! The performance lasts over two hours, and sitting on the ground can get uncomfortable. If you're bringing folding chairs, please sit toward the back so everyone can enjoy the view. There is a 20-minute intermission, giving you plenty of time to stretch your legs, grab a snack, or refill your tea. It gets much cooler after sunset, so bring a light jacket or something warm to throw over your shoulders. A thermos of hot tea is a great idea too. Feel free to bring food and drinks, but be prepared to share your picnic with a few curious bees and other insects. There is a portable restroom on-site, and if it's locked, the access code is 3343. The production quality really impressed us. Professional lighting, excellent sound, microphones--it honestly felt like watching a performance in a real theater, just under the stars. Video recording isn't allowed during the performance, so you can simply relax and enjoy the moment. The host also shared some exciting news--they're building a brand-new stage nearby, and there's a good chance next season's performances will take place there. We'll definitely be back in August for The Comedy of Errors. If you're looking for one of the most unique free summer experiences in Los Angeles, this is one I highly recommend.

However, if you're looking to do a flat walk or run, the 4 mile loop around the Harding Golf Course is as simple as it can get. It's a dirt path that can feel like beach sand in some areas and can be shaded or in full sun. I enter the Autry Museum Parking lot and park at the south side of the lot near the trail for free. It's across the street from the LA Zoo. I do this walk with a friend that lives in the area. It's not a trail I would drive out of my way for. I've seen people running, with their dogs and even one lady walking on stilts.

The one in Griffith Park is huge and well maintained, with several play structures built for children of all ages and abilities. I went for a playdate the day before Christmas Eve, and was pleased to find easy lot parking on a Monday morning during winter break. My four-year-old had a blast with his little friend, running around and jumping into sand. They also rode their bikes around the surrounding bike path, and found their way to a cool slope near the merry-go-round that was perfect for burning kid energy. My two-year-old had a great time, too, and all three kids enjoyed going on the zip lines (this was not my favorite activity, as it involved lots of adult attention). There was a fruit cart on site for some healthy snacking, and plenty of places to sit. We stayed for a good two hours, only leaving because we had to eat. It was a pretty idyllic L.A. morning, and I look forward to taking my kids again.

Once it has a larger climbing in jungle gym apparatus set up then the other half. The swings are sort of divided. Half of them I just a seat while the other half are the entire enclosure for a child that is much younger. The park was kept nice and neat. There's no excess trash or anything falling or spewing out of the trash cans in there is anything flying around the yard. It seems like a pretty popular neighborhood park. It's a real small one but it's perfect for a little kid like mine who just needs to kind of get out some energy and get a little exercise. It was nice to you to be able to sit beneath the tree and some shade and watch my little one have a good time playing.

In fact, Fremont Park just celebrated its official 100th in October 2025. Fremont Park is one of Glendale's first parks. Purchased by the city in 1922, it was named after early settler and builder, Orron/Orrin E. Patterson, who was one of the first three permanent American families to settle in Glendale. Back then, the 10-acre parcel offered a wading pool for the kids and a plunge for the adults. Then in 1925, it was renamed to honor the Explorer & US Senator to California, John C. Fremont. *** THE PARK'S FEATURES *** Today, the place is brand new and looks like it got a great facelift. They have astroturf SOCCER fields and fresh TENNIS courts, both with camps + lessons attached for those seeking to up their game or better their swing. PICKLEBALL fans can get overly "dink elated" to discover 4 dedicated courts. There are BASKETBALL courts, covered parking for about 25 cars to shield themselves from the summer scorch, and a wonderful SPLASH PAD. Of course it wouldn't be a park without a PLAYGROUND area. What's cool about this park is that it caters to the littles and to the big kids too. The peewee's playground is fully shaded and super cute with its blue playhouse. I even saw a few teens hanging out and enjoying the longest slide I've seen yet. It's only reachable by a rope climb to the top. I admit, it was refreshing to see teens playing like kids outside in the fresh air. *** TRAIN CROSSING *** There's a Model Trains Depot just across from the Tennis Courts and covered parking spots for those who are part of the ChooChoo crew. The model railroad (established in 1947) operates a monthly Open House schedule. Hours are on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays & 1st and 4th Mondays, but I'd check their website since things can change and these mini train replicas may have their own schedule at times: www.gmrrc.org. Admission is free for enthusiasts big and small.

I wanted something that have an uphill, but she didn't feel like. The park is small, has tennis/pickle ball courts, a playground with soft matting, picnic tables, and benches throughout the park for resting. I liked the outdoor exercise equipment; I tried most of them and what an exercise I got. If I live nearby, I will come here every day instead of paying for a gym membership. Public facility on site, clean, fully stocked, and bright - unlike many park restrooms that are dark and smelly. Parking is easy, with spots both on the street and inside the park.

North Atwater (Village) Park we finally properly meet…read more I've passed by a lot of the years, but when bae suggested a late morning/early afternoon walk through and around the park I was all in. There's lots of greenery and scenery being next to the LA River and La River Bike Path as well as The 5 fwy. This Los Angeles Public park on Chevy Chase Drive has some unique design and landscaping throughout, not to mention basketball courts, baseball field, volleyball courts, playground, benches, picnic tables, restrooms and plenty of space to enjoy a day at the park. The path that runs along the river is often horse active with stables nearby and easy to follow. Other animals and wildlife in the area especially ducks in the river. It's definitely a little big park, so parking is a bit limited in the main lot, but you can also park along the fencing off Verdant Street as well as in residential parts nearby with limited restrictions. There isn't much light here when the sunsets so I believe this is when the park is closed (hours listed as dawn to dusk - 6am to 6pm roughly). Pretty cool hidden park gem.

Looks like you can reserve the wading pool area in advance too. We have 2 small dogs and there were multiple large sized dogs off leash running around and they will run up and lunge at you. The owners didn't care and just let their dogs roam around. At one point one of the dogs even ran outside the gate towards the street. There are multiple signs around the park that state dogs must be on leash as well. Nice park but wouldn't advise if you have smaller dogs.
