Coakley's is that neighborhood pub that's lively, busy and friendly. It doesn't hurt that the food is delicious. Yesterday, my friend and I took a bike ride around town, and then stopped in for an appetizer and a beverage. It was about 2:30 on the afternoon on a Friday, yet there was a nice gathering of folks enjoying themselves. We were promptly served, and left alone while we browsed the menu. My friend ordered the blackened ahi tuna starter, which she proclaimed bright with flavor and prepared exactly as requested (extra rare). I chose the cream of crab soup, which might be the best I've ever eaten, full of huge lumps of crab meat, delicately flavored with Old Bay, but not too salty. I would've preferred it a tad thinner, but it was not too thick to enjoy. Since I love meatballs, I also ordered the Margherita meatballs, and they were delicious! Three medium sized meatballs, tasting like your Italian Nonna made them, with a rich Sunday sauce and a sprinkling of parmesan. Yum yum yum. My friend and I also decided to splurge on a plate of onion rings, neither of us having had them for a long while. They came out overdone (or left under a lamp too long) and were burned around the edges. One bite and yuck. No worries, our bartender said she'd get them to make us another plate. The second plate came out looking perfectly, and we enjoyed a few, however, they were rather bland and lacked some flavor. Nonetheless, our experience was delightful and our dissatisfaction with the onion rings was not enough to take off a star from my rating. Havre de Grace is a charming small town at the base of the Susquehanna River where it meets the Chesapeake Bay. Come visit, browse the cute shops, and stop in Coakley's for some delicious food, expert cocktails and local energy. read more

For owning the entire block in downtown Historical Havre de Grace you would think this restaurant would be astounding... instead I was disappointed. I believe this was my second time here as it is a favourite of the extended family. Usually I'm here for a birthday or celebration of some kind. The food was okay. My French dip sandwich was fine but the onion rings were flavourless. The onion rings were lukewarm. The Peach Palmer was okay. Not very flavourful, like alcoholic weak tea. My partner ordered the Tuscan Garlic Chicken and found the sauce to be great but the chicken was dry. A cousin ordered the Captain Chesapeake sandwich and it was good but lacked crab. Which is astounding for a Chesapeake town to lack crab. The server for our party seemed very over it. Which I can understand partially since it was a busy Sunday afternoon. However our Birthday person has a disability, a stutter and delayed speech. Our server rolled his eyes and rushed her to order when she was trying her best. He lacked any sort of patience and seemed to just want to be done with us. The ambience is okay. It's weirdly empty and not decorated much. Overall it's okay but I don't come here unless someone else has chosen this as the venue for food. read more

Went here with come coworkers on a work day for dinner. The folks that work here are very accommodating as the number of our party increased. This is a hometown staple for me as I grew up in Havre de Grace and every time I visit from Texas I have to come here. During our most recent visit, we were seated quickly and were provided excellent service by our waitress. I ordered the Captain Chesapeake, a delicious chicken sandwich topped with crab meat on grilled sourdough. I gotta say, this sandwich never has and never will disappoint. Buttery, flavorful, and a great portion size. I'm sad I didn't get any pictures because it was perfect! What else has been wonderful about Coakley's over the years is that it continues to change in a really positive way. This year during our visit I was able to see their upgrade to the outdoor area and it looks great, adds tons of seating, and is perfect for this fall weather. I can't recommend this place enough and look forward to eating there on future visits to HDG. read more

Saturday afternoon, 3pm and had the hardest time even getting a second drink. Only one bartender for two bars, not her fault, but then who looked like the manager didn't do anything. Walked past me a couple of times with an empty glass, didn't ask if I wanted another drink. Allowed people to stand at the table behind the people at the bar and order. I was going to order food but it would have taken me another two hours. I don't think I'll ever come back. I don't remember sitting at the bar on a weekend. read more

We came here recently when meeting friends halfway between their place and ours. It was our first time at this restaurant and, as it was a beautiful day, we chose to sit outside on the patio. We were seated immediately upon arrival and the host put up the umbrella to at least partially shade one of us, and we appreciated the gesture. We reviewed the menu and decided on our drinks and appetizers and waited to be acknowledged. And waited. And waited. And waited. After *literally* 25 minutes of waiting (during which time two different servers passed us on the way to other tables and a table which was seated after us had their order taken and received their drinks) we asked a passing server if we could get assistance. Rather than apologizing for the oversight and helping us, he said he would have someone come over. A few minutes later, another server (who had passed by our table earlier without acknowledgement) came over and offered a half-hearted justification but not really an apology. He joked, "I guess you know what you want by now." Why, yes. Yes, we did. We gave him our drink, appetizer and entree orders (though they were out of the onion rings that accompany the French Dip and also out of one of the salad dressings), and remarked that we were quite thirsty after waiting so long in the sun. Did he hurry back with the waters? Nope. He returned a full ten minutes later with our waters and our alcoholic drinks, and said that he was having trouble entering our orders into the POS system and that was why it took him so long. Imagine our surprise (not really) when our entrees arrived and we still did not have our appetizer. Our server arrived a minute after our entrees were delivered and asked if we needed anything. We told him that the appetizer had never arrived and he seemed surprised. We told him that since we already had our entrees, we no longer wanted the appetizer. He said that he would have it removed from the bill (how generous). To be fair, we really enjoyed the food. Everything we ordered was cooked well and had really good flavor. When it was time for the checks, our server brought them promptly. We noted that it seemed like we were overcharged for the entrees so one of our party went to retrieve a menu and we compared. Yep, we were overcharged by $2 for each of the entrees we ordered. (We later saw that there was a charge on the bill for "service fee" - more on that later). The same one of our party that went to retrieve the menu went to the bar and asked if there was a manager on duty. The bartender said there was not (WHAT?) but asked if she could help. We explained about the long delay, the missing appetizer and now the overcharges and she took the bills to try to make it right. She returned to the table a few minutes later and said that she had removed the drinks from the bill (which we appreciated, though we had each only had one). She said she could not adjust the prices of the entrees that we were charged but had instead applied her employee discount of 10% to try to offset the overcharges. She was very apologetic and said our experience was not indicative of the restaurant, and she hoped we would give then another chance. She then processed our charges and returned the completed slips to us. I'm not sure what is up with the funny math in their POS but it makes no sense. The "10% employee discount" was less than 10% of the pretax subtotal of the bill, so on what was it calculated? Further, there was a "service fee" of a nebulous percentage applied to the bill (and undisclosed) before payment was rendered...when we asked the bartender, she said it was a credit card service fee, though it was on the bill before we paid, so...??? There was also no percentage disclosed for the service fee and it was unclear on what that was assessed. Overall, we allowed one star because we did enjoy the food and one star because the bartender did TRY to make it right. But really, Coakley's...you need to train your servers and devote some attention to the funny math in your POS. And future customers should BEWARE that YOU ARE OVERCHARGING YOUR CLIENTELE. read more

Interesting Irish themed pub with Mexican specials this particular Sunday two days after Cinco de Mayo. Even more interesting was Chimay Blue ale on draft.*** Outstanding*** . The establishment spans an entire block. Parking can be a hassel. Server Grace was attentive and cheerful. Our dining area was up a few steps from the entry floor and allowed for a full view of the Susquehanna River. The food was better than average bar food as the six of us went with a pub dog, a casadea, a Ruben sandwich, a hamburger and two grilled tuna steak on buns. It's certainly worth a try again when in the area..especially for the Chimay. read more

Perhaps I visited on an 'off' day. Came here passing through on the way back home to NYC. Was a recommendation from a native HDG'er so figured I couldn't go wrong. Monday afternoon. Place was dead, maybe 4 other tables. ZERO customer service friendliness or communication. Took nearly 10mins just to get water brought to the table. Had to get up twice looking for my server to place my order (who was socializing in the kitchen with other staff.) What I believe was the manager walked by 3 times not once did he say hello welcome someone will be right with you etc. Food was basic- wings & chicken wrap. Any thumbs up I give would be for the setting- large clean outdoor patio with grassy area welcoming for kids and a small stage likely for live music. All in all, enter at your own risk. Wouldn't go out of my way to visit again but would give it at least one more try if passing through the area. read more

Went this past weekend. Not busy but we didn't see a waiter for 15 minutes and he looked like he'd just crawled out of bed. Took another 20 min to get our drinks - after I'd asked him 2 more times. Appetizer was eaten before we had anything to wash it down with. Asked for the check and a to go box - took another 15 to get the check and had to ask AGAIN for the to go box. Waiter suddenly found his personality when he brought the slip for us to sign - assuming he thought it would lead to a better tip if he actually smiled and said thank you. I guess he isn't aware that tip stands for "To Insure Promptness". Food was very good - with the exception of the horsey sauce - just tasted like mayonnaise.
