What a great find in downtown Laramie. One side is a coffee shop and one side is a brewpub / taproom. We were already throughly caffeinated so we decided to try some beers. We bellied up to the bar and order a flight of beers so that we could try some different styles. The beers were good and the service was fantastic. Not a bad place. The taproom is located in downtown Laramie so you get that kind of vibe... like most of Laramie it's kind of on the more subdued side but this brewery is relaxing enough where you can pull up a chair and have beer and unwind a bit. Coal Creek Tap seems to be a newer brewery in the area... I have been to the other ones prior visits but Coal Creek was a new one for me. When I swung by here on my way back to Denver to fly back to Washington I grabbed their Coal Train Coffee Stout. All in all it wasn't too bad. I've had stouts where the body was a bit more robust and the coffee aspect more noticeable but the beer was pleasing enough. The bartender was friendly and service was prompt. No complaints there. My forte with beer drinking are brews with a more experimental edge to their ingredients or a flavor that is exceptional and extremely memorable. I didn't quite get that here but that's no reason not to swing by and get a brew here! read more

And if I'm feeling like F the calories I legit order the sweet potato fries with ranch! Beer wise I'm into the Molly these days, beers rotate, and the staff is accommodating with the beer selections. Great atmosphere and solid beers. I grabbed a flight, (mentioned in my check-in) scoring four five-ounce samples of the "Heavy 80," Scotch Ale, the "Wyoming Toad," Rye IPA, the "Samurai," Imperial IPA and the "Liberator," Espresso Dopple Bock respectively. To be fair, I'm from Grand Rapids, Michigan--named 'Beer City USA' by Enquirer.com--so my craft beer palette can be a snobby bitch. AJ and I liked the Samurai most, but I really enjoyed the Rye IPA too. The Espresso Dopple Bock was lost on me. I'm not a huge "heavy beer" consumer normally, so getting me to like a flavorful, dark beer is more difficult. Usually I stick to the Vanilla Java Porter from Atwater. Sadly, the Heavy 80 left little impression on me to review a day later. That Samurai, however, is a great Imperial IPA to try. And I'd definitely get that "Toad" Rye IPA again, too. This is a shining example of how to run a taproom the right way. Very cool space with excellent craft beer. They use the exact proper glassware for each style of beer which is something I have never seen executed at this level. The bar tender was excellent and very knowledgeable. Food was good and the prices for everything are very reasonable. We have been visiting craft breweries as a hobby for years and this one really stands out! I'm a very big fan of their beers, to the point, that we lucked out on finding them as our first trip into Laramie, to the detriment of all the other establishments in town! We keep saying we're going to check someone else out, but we really haven't, because the beer here is really that good! I'm also partial to their pretzels and the honey mustard sauce they serve, yes, I lick my fingers after eating it! Their pizzas are really awesome too, we regularly get both! I've had their sandwiches, but the pizzas really are king, so kinda hard to bother with a sammy when you're hungry, if the time is right for them! I've done their beer flights... and they always have something different, something new, any time Coal Creek is up to something, we're checking it out! Seriously, this is one of the places that sold us on moving to Laramie... and, the only place in town that did.... I am so totally a fan!!! This place is awesome!! I'm from Texas, so being in little town Laramie kind of makes you wonder what, if any, amenities exist. Hello, awesome little craft beer brewery! My mom and I tried the Scottish Ale and it was exceptional. I loved that our bartender, a young woman, was so familiar with all the brews and the food that we ended up ordering. It's not every day that you go to a small town brewery and find yourself wishing you could come back, but in this case, I'll come back to visit just so I can come here again. Best part: you can buy a growler to take home! We definitely did, but be aware that you need to drink it within a day or two, or the carbonation dies. If you peek through the door on the side of the bar, you can see that Coal Creek brews everything in-house and right behind that door. I'm so impressed. I'm down for giving them my business anytime. read more

Located on the wide wind-swept roads of Laramie, you'll stumble upon Coal Creek Tap. Tie up your horse, kick off the dust from your boots, and saunter on in! Last weekend a large group of our friends from Denver roadtripped up to Laramie to celebrate a friend's collaboration beer, Collaborateur, being served at CCT. And hot damn, it was super tasty! But I can't fail to mention the other wonderful beers that CCT has pouring through the tap lines. I tried a fair number of the dozen or so brews during our visit and all were solid. I really enjoyed their darker beers: the scotch ale and the porter. Had we not had a 2 hour drive ahead of us, I certainly would have indulged in these two brews a bit more. Coal Creek Tap has a beautiful space connected to an awesome cafe serving up some delicious bites. Beer plus good food? Sign me up! Craft beer is not a new concept in Laramie. This unassuming college community has enjoyed the benefits of the growing Northern Colorado beer scene by seeing new and exciting beer options show up on liquor store shelves on local bar taps for quite a few years. For a while, the only local breweries were Altitude and The Library. Each did well enough, but there has always been a need for more depth and creativity to which locals and visitors alike could really enjoy. With the recent addition of the Coal Creek Tap only 5 weeks ago there seems to be new life being breathed into a rather stagnant craft beer scene. For those that are familiar with the Coal Creek Coffee company, it's no surprise that they were able take this next adventurous step into the brewing community. They have a hip and interesting appeal which could likely be found in a Portland or San Fransisco coffee house, but with the sort of Wyoming authenticity that makes people from around here feel at home. You can't help but appreciate the level attention to detail that makes this place probably the most cool place to have locally brewed beer in Laramie. The tables are cross-sectioned trees that add a warm and rustic charm that really helps create a fun atmosphere. Additionally, the hanging pendants have the sort of urban chic that ony add to that sort of atmosphere. There's plenty of seating and the booths are all made of solid wood. My only criticism is that the table legs are made of cast iron piping which looks cool but takes up a lot of space under the table, which might leave a few bruises for careless legs. As for the beer, we ordered a flight with a sample for each option they had on tap. I have to admit that I'm surprised to see such a quality line-up for a brewery that has only been opened for such a small amount of time! These consisted of a Chech Pilsner, Belgian Blonde, Belgian Amber, American Pale Ale, English Brown Ale, Traditional American IPA and a Double Red IPA. Each beer that we tried were spot on in terms of what one would expect according to their respective BJCP style guidelines. Each beer had a clean flavor profile with now detectable prescence of off flavors and other beer faux pas such as under carbonation and bad clarity. The only reason that they didn't get 5 stars is because they still have to produce more innovative beers that no one else is doing before they earn that star. When they become as unique as they are delicious, they will then be a 5 star brewery. While I admit that Belgian ales are certainly different in the local beer landscape; I'll recommend they try something like either some Belgian Quad or Grand Cru to really showcase the brewer's talent and potential. There are a myriad of really interesting directions to go in which would help differentiate this brewery. One more thing, they should have an AHA discount or promotion that pays it's respect and appreciation to the home-brewing community that will help this place grow and flourish. Currently their head brewer/owner, John, doesn't have anything in place for that yet, but the bartender, Bart, said he'd talk to him about that. I look forward to coming back to this place whenever I'm in Laramie. I can't wait to see what else will be showing up on tap. Their "coming soon" section of their menu showed some definite promise with Scottish Wee Heavy and Coffee Stout. These two beers might be just what they need to elevate to the 5 star category. Trying not to sound arrogant, I feel like an experienced micro-brewery customer. I've probably visited over 100 in the western US, about 3/4 in California. Never thought I'd find this gem on the high plains of Wyoming though. Bottom Line: Coal Creek Tap is among the very best. From the beer selection, to the quality furnishings and the impeccable service, nothing was missing. The beers were all tasty, with plenty of variety and some unique flavors. Each one is served in a unique glass designed to maximize flavor or enjoyment. I just think they are cool! Especially appreciated was the expertise of Josh, our "beertender". VERY helpful, but not pushy, enthusiastic, but a great listener. He is the primary reason we decided to come back, THE SAME DAY! Oh yeah, the salads and pizzas rock too! If I ever find myself in Laramie again, I will probably spend the whole time at CCT. read more

Passing through on my way to California, walked into Coal Creek Tap while looking for First Street Tavern. Didn't feel much like wandering anymore (and I must be blind because First St was .08 miles from Coal Creek) and I'm what you could call a beer snob, so I thought I'd give it a shot. If I didn't like the beer, I'd have one and venture further. This was some of the best beer I've ever had. Their smoked porter was excellent, not too smokey or heavy, which I like in my smoked beers. Had their black ale (IPA but not called that) which was so complex and smooth that I would've ordered another had I not been on the road for the past two days with naught but two meals. I tried the Wyoming Toad (Rye IPA) but had to call it quits after the sample, unfortunately. If I had more time I'd spend another day in town because this whole place seems like a hidden gem in the northern Rockies and Coal Creek is the epicenter of that gem as far as I'm concerned. Great beer, incredibly friendly staff, and they roast coffee as well (I'll be going there before heading out tomorrow and if it's as good as their beer I shan't be disappointed). read more

FINALLY! A great brewery in the heart of Laramie, WY, yes, it's true. The interior is well decorated. It's charming and rustic. The service is awesome. She was knowledgeable about the beers and fun to talk to. The beers are really stellar. I tried a variety of them and loved all of them. My favorite bar in Laramie. Great service, especially if you catch Josh and Bart. My girlfriend and I go every weekend to catch these guys, have a few laughs and catch a good buzz at a affordable price. For the most part, staff is very knowledgeable about the beers they serve and won't mind answering in-depth questions about the beer they serve. The exception is the few employees who have no idea, don't seem to care about their job, and are just there to make a buck. You will be able to clearly point them out. Don't let them ruin a good time. Athmosphere is wonderful. Unique in the way that the tables are crafted, beautifully stainted, and lighting compliments a mixture of natural colors. Makes you feel like your at a up-scale bar, yet laid back enough to go in with jeans and a t-shirt. First trip to this place. Recommended by the desk staff at the best western. First off, the beer is really good. Had the red double IPA and it was great. Then tried the experimental and again it was really great!. Ordered the Ruben. In my world, one of the true test foods at a bar. It was pretty good. A little too bread heavy for me but the flavor was really good. Served with blue corn tortilla chips. Strange but good. I ordered some green chili"dip"to go with the chips... pretty hot, made my nose run! Awesome! As far as environment goes... it's a small space. No private conversation here and it's a little loud because of that. I'm pretty conservative in most cases and the conversation around me was so hateful. I get it, I'm in a college town but I'm in Wyoming. I guess I was caught off guard. Enjoyed the lack of reality and ordered another beer before returning to my room. The food is definitely not anything special and is way too expensive for the quality. We had a veggie pizza and sweet potato fries. The pizza was ehhh....way too much cheese but the crust was good. The sweet potato fries came out with an insane amount of red pepper flakes and were not edible. The menu said nothing about red pepper flakes....it actually had a completely different combination of spices. Super confused there. I tried two of their IPA's and they were delish. It looked like there was a strong English component going on here, as they had an English style IPA, a mild, and a bitter. My wife and I had heard great things about this place so we went here on a weekday for lunch. It has a very limited menu and is even more limited because they only do pizza after 530pm. The food was ok, the beer was ok, and the service was less than mediocre. We were literally the only customers in the place and a hot dog and pulled pork sandwich took almost an hour to come out. The raspberry tea tasted like water with some raspberry syrup. We had to keep asking the bartender for things like silverware, napkins, and the bill. We won't be coming back. read more

Coal Creek has a reputation as a hipster bar, and it's well deserved, with its fancy, dimly lit naked-bulb lighting, rustic tables and uncomfortable, 1920's Steel Stool Aesthetic. This being said, I've always enjoyed going to Coal Creek for good beer and pretty good bartenders. The gang and myself tend to flee around 9pm because that's when the hipsters hear the call of their people and descend en masse to the place, but that's about it. Beers I'd recommend -- as a fan of Belgians and blondes -- are: -The Molly -Ouessant -The Bath Farmhouse Molly is an excellent beer to be introduced to. So!
