We stopped in during the afternoon while traveling and were short on time. One of the reasons we chose this place was because it had been recommended to us by ChatGPT for its good atmosphere and food, so we arrived with positive expectations. If you are on a schedule, hungry, or just passing through, I strongly recommend having a reservation before going. Another issue was the online menu experience. Their website would not open properly for us, and the menu information we found online did not match the physical menu we were given at the restaurant. That made it difficult to plan ahead or know what to expect before arriving. The host was initially kind enough to seat us at the bar so we would not be turned away, which we appreciated. We ordered a quick meatball dish to go and were told it would be about 10 minutes. Unfortunately, it ended up taking around 45 minutes. Had we been informed clearly from the beginning that the food would be significantly delayed, and that not having a reservation would place us at the back of the queue, we would have simply gone somewhere else and saved everyone the inconvenience. By the time the food arrived, we were tired and frustrated. During the wait, it was explained to us that because we did not have a reservation, other orders had to be prioritized ahead of ours. While the meal was ultimately provided at no charge, the overall experience was stressful and not ideal for travelers on a tight schedule. Let me start by saying that the food was excellent. However, the rest of the evening was abysmal. We arrived early for our 6 pm reservation. There were four other parties seated. We were seated just after 6 pm and no other tables came in for another 45 minutes. Our server invited us to help ourselves to the Soup & Salad Wagon. Then she disappeared for 20 minutes. When she returned, we were finally able to order a beverage as well as our entrees. The food did not arrive for another 40 minutes. She served my husband his steak, but mine did not come out for almost five more minutes. She dropped a slip on our table that said "20% off Wait." She asked in passing if our steaks were cooked okay (they were). Eventually, she came by again and brought our check. I pointed out that she had charged us for the less expensive steaks ($48 instead of $52). Again, we waited another 10 minutes for her to come back at which point she told us that she rang up the cheaper steaks to reflect the 20% off. Our bill was just over $100. Twenty percent off should have been at least $20, but we were tired of sitting and waiting (nearly 30 minutes had passed since we got our check the first time) so we paid the bill, tipped her, and left. read more

Six of us went there for dinner last night. While the menu was limited the food was very good. Four of us had the prime rib and two of us had the filet . The meat was delicious and very tender and came with mashed potatoes that were very tasty. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a good steak. The ambiance was pleasing as well. read more

Okay, stuff happens. Ordered an appetizer-battered mushrooms. Very good, hand battered; definitely not a frozen item. Apps actually came out before we ordered our meal. VERY long wait. Water glasses empty, empty appetizer plates remained on the table. Salads finally arrived-very solid. Again a very long wait. The food was wonderful though we were rarely checked on. Best Lil' hole-in-the-wall in Wyoming, perhaps the entire nation given that the entire state of Wyoming is a hole-in-the-wall. I was pleasantly greeted, "Bonne journée mon ami!" Bradley, arguably the best Francophile bartender in Wyoming warmly welcomed, and followed with a complementary hot soda bread. Next, a happy multi-hued pony-tailed pixie appeared to take drink order. How could anyone resist Another Round! I returned the next evening to RE-order! The professional and friendly Taylor was on bar, expertly executing taking and delivering orders. Seemed like a good choice for Sunday supper. When I go to a steakhouse I expect the best. Dinner for 5 can range from $350 and up. We made reservations earlier in the day. As soon as we arrived we were seated. During drink selection waitress informed us to pick a second choice due to zero inventory on all sorts of drink menu items. She was right. We came for the rockie mountain oysters, low and behold they were out. Major disappointment. Dinner selection same "let me check to see if we have that. We asked for A-1 she said let me see if we have any. She brought out the last bottle. It had maybe an inch of sauce in it(this is a steakhouse) I ordered my ribeye medium well. Came out half raw and the other half medium rare. She asked to take it back. My feeling is if it has to go back to the kitchen I'm dining at the wrong place. I didn't eat another bite. I imagine at one time the Cavalryman steak house was top notch for Laramie & the surrounding part of Wyoming, but something has clearly changed whether it be staffing shortage, or just the owners cheapening out. I came here for a birthday dinner with extremely high expectations to match the prices... instead I got ok food with dismal service. Our server was actually pretty nice, but I think one bad table & disorganized management made her crash & burn. A table next to us complained as their food was all brought out at once instead of spaced out. The manager instead of profusely apologizing with empathy turned the table to make them look awful saying the server was in tears & she had to leave to console her. (Nice.. people skills there) That table was in no way rude, just upset that their anniversary dinner was not what they expected. So onto my experience-- it was hot - we were sweating & almost to the point of feeling dizzy. It took FOREVER for our food to come out. Highlights: The soda bread & honey butter is excellent! The salads were excellent! The garlic mashed potatoes & side veggies were great! Lowlights: The prime rib I had was a little too fatty... almost to cheap casino standards. There were two servers running the whole building... strangely for a Saturday they were not full, but it took me asking for a box 3 times to get one to appear. The manager previously mentioned delivered it & again with lack of empathy made an excuse almost making us feel guilty for coming There & asking for a box, because they were so busy. At this point I just wanted to get the hell out of this... well... hell based on the temperature. They really need to invest in some portable AC units... you can't make patrons paying you that much sweat to death in the hottest part of summer. I will always prefer a local steakhouse with history and character to a boring chain steakhouse. Located on the parade grounds of a previous fort within the 1920s clubhouse of an old golf course, the historic ambiance is pretty high here, with lots of historical pictures lining the walls. The service was friendly and attentive. Wine choices were solid, as were our steaks--cooked to our specifications, though they had cooled down some by the time they reached our table. We tried two of the specials--the Cajun potato salad was a bit of a miss personally but I appreciated the restaurant exploring different flavors and the offer by the manager to bring a different side. The soda bread appetizer was very good, and we ate nearly the entire plate of fried mushrooms just between two of us. Finished with the chocolate chip cookie skillet, which truly tasted homemade rather than something you could get at any BJs. It was getting to be dinner time while we were driving through Laramie so we looked at local restaurants and noticed Cavalryman Steakhouse was on our route, so we stopped. It is a very large place with a large parking lot. We both decided to try their famous 12 oz Ribeye and I will say it was one of the best steaks I have had in a few years. The Wyoming Soda Bread was also good as were the two salads we had, a Apple, Candied Nut and Goat Cheese Salad and a normal Dinner Salad. The service was good. The ribeye was cooked med rare as I wanted, but way over salted. The mashed potatoes were over salted also. it was like they salted it and forgot, then salted it again. At least the food was warm as it should be, but we were to only other table in the place with people at it. I think they pre grill the steaks? but mine was as I like it ( except over salted) Having your food served 10 min after you order it does not lend an idea it was cooked when ordered. The starter salad was obviously pre made and I received the one that was the oldest with bits of spoiled lettuce. which I picked through. Service was OK, but not at a quality steakhouse level. Lovely early evening dinner on New Year's Eve. Service was on par and folksy anticipation of needs was excellent. Baked Brie appetizer, French onion soup both I would return for again. Steaks and sides cooked as requested. Wine list had some of our stands. Presentation was non fussy with i's doted as we wanted or not wanted. To be picky: The mule could of had an additional dash of ginger beer. Instead of sending it back just moved to glass of wine. First, let me tell you that I found this place on Yelp and with the precious help of my GPS. There is a flag with the logo of the restaurant that is visible from the road. However, I was very hesitant to drive to check out the restaurant as it did not look like a place of business at all. It looked like a mobile home. No kidding, the long driveway curves around a structure that IMHO looks like a mobile home. The facade facing the main road has no visible entry. You have to park in the back which is the entrance of the restaurant. Confused yet? Once in the parking lot, I was among many other cars there which was reassuring. I asked to see the menu before being seated, and this place convinced me. It appeared to be of good quality judging by the price point and description of the menu and wine list. I was promptly seated. I ordered a 6 oz. filet mignon with chimichuri sauce, sweet potato fries and a La Crema Pinot Noir. Steak was cooked to perfection and three different wait staff came by to enquire as to my dining experience. My dinner was supposed to have soup and/or salad and given that I was not very hungry, I asked for my dinner a la carte. This was by far our worst experience we had had at this restaurant. The food took over an hour and half. Drinks were taking over 20 min to get after several requests. I talked to the manager about the service and horrible experience. I had to get a new burger due to mine being over cooked. This was supposed to be a nice dinner for my wife's birthday with some friends. Turned out, was the worst service I have ever experienced. I thought by bringing this to the managers attention there would be some understanding to the situation. Instead when we got the bill they already added $55.00 auto gratuity and a $325.00 bill. We have eaten here more than anywhere in Laramie. The main course is usually good and in fact consistently better than other Laramie restaurants. Last night was typical. My Toscana Tenderloin was quite good, although overcooked. The garlic mashed potatoes were over-whipped and therefore destroyed in texture. Also cold, as was the huge pile of uncooked squash slices adorning the plate. Service was slow and spotty. This is our "go to" dining when we don't have time to drive to Fort Collins for a real dinner. It's better than other Laramie venues, which is hardly a recommendation. read more

Wish there was a negative star for this place. This was the worst meal we have had in decades. They were out of almost everything on the menu! No duck, no prime rib, no chicken, every whiskey and beer our table asked for they were out of. It took forever for anything to arrive at the table. We were brought things that we didn't order. My friend ordered the country fried steak, and the gravy looked like where someone threw up after a night of drinking. The piece of meat was sitting in a pool of grease and the top had grease running off it. We finally figured out what ten gravy was, pan grease with nothing more than a hand full of flour thrown in it. Others meals were just as disgusting. In all honesty, this was one of the worst meals our family had had in a long time. The Rocky Mountain oysters lackied seasoning and was incredibly dry, the salmon was similar to jerky and the steak and mashed potatoes were so over seasoned they were pretty much inedible. I have been here twice. The first time I was impressed with the location a little outside of Laramie and the decor inside with various animal heads on the wall. I had even gotten a window seat with a great view. The meal came with soda bread and honey butter, chicken fried streak with country gravy, grilled veggies, and a loaded baked potato. A little pricey, but it was much more than I could eat. The second time was a late birthday dinner for my dad. He ordered the chicken fried steak and I had gotten the ranch hand skillet pie (sort of like a pot pie). I took a few bites of the pot pie and realized that it was undercooked and still dough-y. I mentioned this to the waiter and had them send it back. It took awhile for the replacement to come. The second skillet pie came and was still undercooked but I decided to eat it anyways at that point. My dad had also gotten free bread pudding as his birthday dessert- very savory and distinct flavor to the caramel sauce. read more

I reserved a table tonight at what I thought was going to  be a five star experience. I struggle to even give it one star. We got there at 6:30 and we're seated and two hours later we finally got our meal. It wasn't the meal we initially ordered because they said that the prime rib was out of stock because the other large table had ordered it. We actually were seated and placed our order before the large table even was seated. To make things even worse the manager who came by several times never offered a complementary drink because of our delayed meal, nor did they offer to comp any of our appetizers or meals, nor did they even offer us a complementary dessert. The steaks were well prepared but the sides of vegetables were all over crooked. On top of it the restaurant does not have air-conditioning and when we were done our shirts were pretty much soaked. I had read great reviews about this restaurant and was really expecting to have an enjoyable experience. Our dinner was not cheap, tax and tip was close to $150. I hope I am the only one that received this poor service. I spent a week in Laramie and plan to return again but I certainly will not be coming back to this restaurant nor will I recommend it to anyone in the future. read more

We were driving across country and this place was recommended from the hotel. We asked for the best steak place, not the fanciest, and this was the spot! We loved it from the minute we drove up. It has a country rustic style with a direct purpose- we serve delicious cocktails and beer and we know how to season, prepare, and grill meat. "We aren't pretentious and we aren't going to chase you out, please sit and enjoy" that was the quote from the house manager Cheyenne who was sincerely happy to chat with us. We ordered the Rough Rider with Bison and the 12 oz Ribeye - both cooked to perfection (medium rare with just the right amount of char). The Rough Rider was a combination of complex and savory tastes which my husband said rivaled the dishes of the best steakhouse from home and my ribeye had just enough season to highlight the taste of the beef and marbling throughout. The cast iron bread with honey butter is DELICIOUS- go ahead and get the 4 person amount, you will want more. The menu is full of substantial and delicious meals. Its definitely a cheat day for your diet, however due to the excellent preparation and quality of food, you will just feel full pleasant and not full gross. The kids menu is a good option for kids and anyone who wants a lighter version of a meat based meal. I can't speak for the vegetarian options and I don't think this place works if you are vegan. My only "not glowing" input is for the wedge salad- if you like lots of Blue cheese then you will enjoy it, for me it was a little too much and overpowered the combination of bacon and tomato. You will likely not have room at the end but if they have the bread pudding (no raisins) with whiskey caramel sauce - GET IT.. and share - it's a big portion. Price wise I found it to be reasonable for the quality and amount of food. Compared to the prices at home, it was way under market. And if you happen to care about this - they do use earth friendly Togo packaging which is nice. We are definitely coming back on our drive back across country! read more

We wanted to take my son and two of his friends out for a nice steak dinner. What a disappointment. We had reservations, it took them 30 minutes to get us seated and half the dining room was empty and they weren't allowing bar seating because they only had one bartender on a holiday weekend. The waitress was perky and apologized but obviously overwhelmed. It took forever to just order the drinks let alone get them. I ordered a nice glass of red wine which came in a small white wine glass, which she apologized for and said they didn't have any clean ones. Food was hit and miss, my ribeye was less than 1/2" thick and way over done, not even pink when I ordered medium rare. I did not send it back because we were going on almost 2 hours just to get entrees. There was no fat at all, a ribeye should be marbled, there was no sear at all just a dull brown. My baked potato was very good. The bison burger was good but also overcooked, the strip was overdone and no sear and the beef burger was very good. The interior hasn't been updated since it opened and is very cheap looking. If you are looking for a nice steak dinner, this is NOT the place. read more

The Calvaryman has been around since 1970, and was the "go-to" fancy place when I went to the University of Wyoming in the 1980s. It was always excellent then, but that was 30 years ago! I mentioned to a friend who lives in Laramie where we were going for dinner and she responded with the barfy emoji, so that put me on edge a little. However it was a football game weekend so getting anywhere else was out of the question. We arrived and not much had changed in terms of decor. But, everything was clean and well-maintained. I don't remember the bar at the NE corner of the building, but, due to a bizarre Wyoming liquor law that says kids can't eat in the same room as liquor is dispensed (not consumed...dispensed) and we had our 16-year-old, we went to the main dining room. First, our server was AWESOME. She was a UW student from Hayden, CO (sorry...don't recall her name). But she was attentive, helpful, articulate and prompt. Top notch. Second, my steak was cooked to perfection and the sides delicious. Prices were reasonable and in-line with regional norms. I had two Old Fashioneds which were constructed very well.
