I just want to say thank you to Coal Point for an exceptional experience with packaging our fish. I had contacted them the day before our scheduled charter and they were very informative and told me to just give them a call as soon as our boat comes in and they would meet us at the dock with the totes. I informed our captain that we would be utilizing Coal point fish processing so they let them know 20 minutes prior to arriving at the docs and the worker was there waiting for us to pull in to retrieve our fish. I gave him my name my number and off he went. The next day, I called in to make sure that the fish would be ready for pick up as we were heading out of Homer that afternoon. When I was ready to pick up the fish, they pulled it out of the freezer and found the best way to have it packaged to be sent home. We were not leaving till the following day and overnighting in Anchorage. As I did have a cooler with me but our fish weighed 45 pounds and with the cooler it would have been over what is allowed for a bag through the airlines without incurring overweight charges so they suggested to ship it in a box and ensure that it would stay frozen for 36 hours, which gave us enough time to overnight in Anchorage and fly home to Hawaii without being thawed. Because we arrived in Anchorage so late we did not have an opportunity to put it in a freezer overnight, but when we reached home and opened the box and cooler that Coal point had packed for us, all the fish was still rock solid. We were also staying on Homer spit so earlier in the day. I did stop by to check out the location prior to having to come back later to pick up our fish overall such a great experience and I will definitely recommend them to friends and family and also would utilize them again if I ever came back. read more

We got some delicious filets here for a very reasonable price. The employees were friendly and helpful!

We use them to process halibut. The fish was vacuum sealed with care in individual serving sizes. It was ready for pickup. It was not quite a full box so they placed paper in the air space and added two gel packets. They double taped and used a box strapper to add two straps. When I got home, the fish were still frozen. Not every company or employee demonstrates pride in their work, only when you get bad service do you recognize that not everyone is the same. Had a horrible experience at another company in the area called Tanners. I would not trust Tanners to pack an ice cube. read more

Fish arrived as scheduled and mostly still frozen. It was difficult to tell which of the fish was the cod and which was the halibut even though the skin was to have been removed on the cod and left on the halibut so it should have been easy to tell. Pretty sure some of the skin was removed on the halibut. There were weird portion sizes also. There as one piece of halibut that couldn't have more than an ounce in a package by itself. However, my biggest gripe is with the customer service when we dropped the fish off. We were not told that having the fish packed so we could take it with us the next day and avoid the nearly $300 shipping fee was even an option. We have never shipped fish like this before so we had no idea we could save most of that fee by keeping the fish frozen until we flew out and then checking the fish box as checked baggage for $35. When we went fishing later in the trip and took our fish to Jolly Wollys in Soldotna they suggested we do the checked baggage option and save the $300 FedEx fee. Jolly Wollys gets a 5 star review and you get a 3 star review because of that. Please educate your customer service people. On top of that you wanted me to pay more for insurance in case my fish didn't arrive frozen. After already paying nearly $300 for shipping you want me to pay more to guarantee what I already paid for will happen. Not happening! read more

Coal Point Trading Company is another uniquely Alaska-y shop on the Homer Spit. It has a small cafe, a fish monger and a gift shoppe. You'd think in a fishing town the fish monger would be cheap but the Coal Pt fish monger is PRICEY and targeting tourists. Their prices on crab, halibut and salmon made me cringe! It looked like quality stuff, but you definitely pay for it. They also will ship your fish for you. The gift shoppe has some cool stuff. It's a random hodgepodge of Alaska-themed stuff ranging from all-weather camping gear, socks, soap, calendars and cookbooks. Most of that stuff was pretty cool and their prices were on par with everyone else. read more

Been coming here for years and always had a good experience. Vac packed is always the way to go and keeps your fishy good for a very long time in the freezer. Here are a couple of hints: - they will pick up your fish from your boat which is super nice. (Just call their # when you motor in and meet at the dock down from them) - per pound processing is pretty much the same if you filet it or they do. So for smaller fish - might be worth it just to allow them to do it if you want to save some time - shipping fish overnight is suuuuper pricey. Try to avoid this at all costs. Just buy one of their coolers on the way out and ship it home as a checked bag in your luggage. Not leaving right away when you get back to anchorage? ANC airport has cold storage for just a few bucks a day. (I have done this about 10 years in a row and filets are always frozen solid when I get home) read more

We stopped in here and had a fresh bowl of seafood chowed which was perfect on a damp day. The place has frozen seafood which you can ship. Our server was Brandi and the nicest person we've ever met. I have used the facilities before and I was pleased with thier packaging and freezing. The salmon and halibut were in perfect order when I open my box from Homer, AK. They also have a little store adjacent to the processing plant. The smoked king salmon and smoked black cod were excellent by a little pricey - okay for Alaska. We fished out of the Spit 2 days while on vacation Aug 2020. We came home with about 100lbs of fish. Coal Point Trading Co was the processor. My advice is to count your fish and get your guide to sign your count. Then before accepting your order have a fish tail count. I got home with far too many tails. Unless of course you prefer tails but that would not be us. I didn't realize it until it was too late but I won't be making that mistake again. All the vacuum packages have stayed intact since then, so no complaint there. Wife says we are going back with knives and our own vacuum sealer as we don't ship but carried out fish home. Bought a whole salmon, frozen. Thawed it out and it stunk up the kitchen. I suspect it was frozen because I was already spoiling. Could not eat it, dogs would not touch it. A big waste of good money. The Halibut was good. Overall however I lost around $200. Never again!! read more

Visited May 2022. Wonderful food, people and seafood store. We stopped in to buy some seafood for dinner and ended up having lunch there as well. I had Halibut tacos that were to die for! They were loaded with Halibut, very fresh veggies and a jalapeño dip. Even the tortilla was homemade! My better half had the clam chowder and was very pleased! He had the Salmon Sandwich with a yummy dill dip. Again, very fresh veggies on his sandwich as well. We purchased Dungeness crab from their market. Plenty of shrimp, scallops, crab, cod, smoked fish, salmon, rockfish, lingcod, etc to choose from. So glad the we stopped in. Best lunch on the spit by far! read more

Coal Point pioneered quality fish processing services for the sport and commercial fisherman. They were the first to offer boat-side pickup of freshly caught halibut from Homer's charter fleet. With huge fluctuations in tidal movement, it is an extremely nice service. After a hard day of fishing, it's a welcome sight to see their runners, and I don't use the term loosely, appear at the dock, and transport the catch for custom trimming, cutting to size, vacuum packing, and blast freezing. But that's just half of the story. The gift shop, fresh & frozen seafood for sale, and dining area are just awesome! The gift shop has everything from backpacking supplies to jars of local jams & jellies, and an array of wonderful cookbooks to browse. Our local grocery stores have pathetically poor seafood departments, and I send all of my guests here. The variety is just outstanding with halibut, salmon, rockfish, crab, cleaned razor clams, and my favorite, wild Alaskan shrimp. Since most store-bought shrimp these days comes from earth-unfriendly farms in Southeast Asia, it's a relief to find a place where the real deal can still be purchased. The seafood chowder is fantastically yummy at the dining counter, as are the fresh Kachemak Bay oysters, and I never miss a chance to grab a fresh shrimp cocktail. Used this company to ship our fish. We thought the prices were compatible and the fact that they pick up your fish is very convenient. Clean place, very organized. The lady at front desk suggested we buy insurance, which we are so glad we did!!! There was a delay in FedEx shipping and our fish arrived a day late (thawed and ruined ;(( Although we were super upset that we lost our catch, the ladies at Coal Trading were super helpful and helped us handle the claim with FedEx from start to finish!!! They shipped our fish on the wrong day than what they said it would. They charged us FedEx Overnight price but it has taken 3 days to get to us. It might be thawed when it arrives. My first experience with Coal Point Trading Company was a generally very good. They were very quick and efficient, though their prices weren't too competitive. I spent $688.24 to get 123 lbs of Halibut shipped to a single address. I went back the following day to change my order around a bit. Since they were backlogged on their shipping, they couldn't ship my fish for 5 days. I expected to pay additional charges for the shipping. When I showed up, there was no one at the front desk except for a kid who said that Christie would be with us as soon as she finished up on the phone. When Christie did arrive to the front desk (~10 min later), she took my additional address and started to calculate/re-process my order. After she completed the calculations she informed me that there would be a $20 charge for reprocessing my order. When I questioned the charge, I was met with EXTREME hostility. She went off on a rant about how her employees were already worked hard enough and are inconvenienced when people like me change their orders. I'm sorry, but after I spend almost $700 to ship some fish, I don't expect to be nickeled and dimed to change the order.... it wasn't even going out for 4 MORE DAYS!! Not only that, I cannot believe how unprofessional Christie was. Her complete lack of customer service and hostility toward me was out of order and unwarranted. We had 20 pounds of fish vacuum packed, placed on dry ice, shipped home via FedEx overnight. One of those hole in the wall tucked away places the locals eat. We walked in and the scents of cooking filled our nostrils and there was no question, we have to eat here! Daily special was shrimp cakes with fresh basil salad and rice. The sauce, sort of a thousand with garlic and spice was incredible. So good you could drink it! Absolutely terrible this last summer of 2012 I lost over 50 silvers at coal point and over 10 yellow eye rockfish. Their organization is terrible due to the fact that the kids doing the initial paperwork when u bring your fish up are stoned out of their minds. I work on a charter boat and we had multiple groups loose fish at coal point, service and quality has severely dropped it recommend going elsewhere with your buisness but the other company is a hastle to get to. And don't expect if u have a issue to get help from nancy the owner. read more

I have no plans to return to Coal Point Trading Company. I went once, and it was hard as heck to get my son's wheelchair over the dirt and rocks, but we made it in, and I got a small order, and was treated okay, nothing special, but okay. Another day, late in summer, very late in the day, such as a half hour before closing time, and with very light Spit traffic, I was just driving by, and I thought I'd stop and cheer myself up with a small purchase of some crab cakes or something, for dinner. I pulled into the parking lot, and it was mud and huge puddles of water in the pot holes, which made me cringe. I decided to drive over to the side, by the front door, and tuck in there, go in for a couple of minutes, get my purchase completed, and leave. My son was with me, and he has disabilities, and I do not like to leave him alone. So I didn't want to park him far away. There also is no handicapped parking, as such, so I improvised. As soon as I got in the door, however, instead of being greeted courteously as is right and proper, and good business practice, a young lady, Caucasian, maybe 20, with dark, longer hair began yelling, "Oh, look! Who parked there! How can people park like that, I just saw a near accident this morning from people parking there! Who parked there?" I said, that I'd parked there. She demanded that I move, and I said no. That should have been the end of it, and that would have been bad enough, but possibly redeemable, another day. There was little traffic, plenty of room to drive around me, and I only intended to be inside for a moment. I'm a mature woman, and a good driver, and I have not had an accident in over 30 years. I don't need to be told how to drive. However, that girl went on, and on, and on, and on about how I ought to move, why don't I move, I should move, blah, blah, and blah. I refused. I stood my ground, and went to make my purchase, but she'd insulted and argued so much that I no longer felt like buying anything. I felt incensed, and unable to do anything, but leave. So, I walked out, and I moved my car, and then I returned to tell them I'd never go back again! I have been trying to figure how to contact the owners because this is no way to treat customers. Maybe the owners know something about business, and they need to train and manage their employees, much better. We just moved to Homer this year, and we bought a house, and intend to stay. They just lost a potential long term customer forever, thanks to that rude employee. They treated me like they are the only game in town, but fortunately I've always been treated kindly, courteously, professionally, and helpfully just down the street at the Auction Block, for my fish purchases. I intend to give them all of my business, for the rest of my life, and I never intend to set foot in Coal Point Trading, again. If a customer comes in your door, all employees should be glad they choose their establishment, and should work to make them happy they came in, and invite them to return again. The Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving this past week, my Dad and I took a winter king charter out of Homer. Only planning to stay for the night and because Coal Point was going to be closed over Thanksgiving, we needed our fish frozen that Wednesday or for us or ship it.. When we learned that we were unable to get the fish frozen that day, we determined that it wouldn't be cost effective to ship and so decided to gift our fish to some of our fellow charter-mates. As we were in the process of doing this, the employees at Coal Point offered to swing over the morning of Thanksgiving to open up and get us our fish. And so! Heather, from Coal Point met us at the shop at 10 am on Thanksgiving to open up and take care of us. Thank you soooooooooo much! We're from out of town, the purchase was under $10 and it was freaking Thanksgiving. AMAZING service. read more

Yes, they are busy, so you have to roll along with the flow- you aren't the only one in line after a full day of fishing. Zero stars. My husband and father in-law spent $275.00 each to fish in Kachemak bay, caught a slew of fish and after they were cleaned, weighed in at 20 lbs. Great right? Not so much... After paying an additional $175.00 to have it packed and shipped... low and behold it DID NOT arrive at our home the next day after they promised to ship. Keep in mind this fish was caught on the Thursday the 25th of June and supposedly flash frozen and to be held until the best date to ship, this being Monday June the 29th, and then to be delivered the following Tuesday June 30th. THE NEXT DAY!!!! Well it was a long waiting game between calls letting us know that the fish would be ONE day late then one MORE day late and then... YEP ONE MORE DAY LATE!!!! RUINED !!!! Apparently there was a weather anomaly that grounded the flight for a moment. The thing is... when we called to let them know that the fish was ruined we spoke to some 20 yr old something who screamed it wasn't her fault and she had just had to inform 61 other people before us , again 61 other CUSTOMERS, that had SPOILED fish delivered to their door, that there was nothing she could do for us or them and to and to call FED EX. This of course we did... And guess what? They said call guess who else? The shipper. So we called Coal Point back and as we stand we are on our own. Nothing. Just a girl screaming... It's NOT my fault sir! So, I sincerely hope that you do not use this packer. If they had offered us ANYTHING, even an apology that would have been kinder. This packer is unprofessional. read more

People don't realize how expensive it is to ship fish by FedEx. The processing is actually quite cheap the major cost is the shipping. I was a little disappointed that my fish was not labeled but I can look at the skin to identify. If you are spending several days days fishing you can just add to your order and then pay for processing and shipping all at once-nice feature. Was kind if disappointed that we came in a couple of days early to pay for our processing and shipping, boxing and set it up for 8 AM on a specific day. When we got there nothing had been boxed or gotten ready for shipping. As a result we waited for an hour to get the fish boxed that we were taking on the plane. I figured that since we had come in 2 days before that the boxes that we were having shipped that same day according to our receipt were ready to be shipped as well, for some reason our shipped boxes were not shipped until the next day, for $475 I would have thought they would have had it all ready to go.
