My wife and I stopped in for lunch at Coalhouse Pizza on a recent Saturday, and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable dining experiences we've had in a long time. We had the pleasure of meeting the proprietor and his lovely little daughter, and the warmth and hospitality they showed us set the tone for the entire visit. The food was excellent and the drinks were equally impressive. But what really made the afternoon special was the wonderful conversation I had with the owner about blues music -- the playlist filling the room and the fantastic portraits lining the dining room walls sparked a chat I won't soon forget. It's rare to find a place where the passion behind the establishment comes through so clearly. Great drinks, fantastic food, and truly wonderful hospitality. We went into Coalhouse around 1pm. After searching for a staff member and finally being seated we were handed all the menus including the lunch specials. Turns out they had no soup at all (he said he had to revise that menu). Then we said we'd like something else on the regular menu and again they didn't have any (because that item is popular). Luckily we were able to snag a seat at the bar. This is a more family friendly type of restaurant which is great if you're coming with a large group or children. This time I found the pizza to be mostly dough, about 2" of the top had no cheese, sauce, or toppings. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. Don't order a salad at Coalhouse Pizza. I ordered a salad that sounded like it would be similar to a Cobb Salad. the lettuce was not fresh, in fact some of it was actually rotten. I would have sent it back, but the waitress never came back after the meal was served. This place is really good. I read the reviews before I ventured out and they were pretty much on point. Except no one mentioned how awesome their Margaritas were. The Margaritas were delicious - a perfect blend. Originally my daughter said she was going because they had an extensive beer list but once she had the Margaritas she forgot about ordering a beer. I also ordered the little red rooster pizza pie and it was delicious. The crust was nice and soft and it had the right amount of cheese. I had the sweet thai chili wings and it had a nice crunch and was full of flavor. I am happy that I stopped in this restaurant. The wait staff was really nice and he informed us when he thought we had too many Margaritas but I wasn't counting them I was having a good time. Ugh - haven't been back in a while and I understand why. Went for dinner on a Saturday night when you would expect the place would be hopping. There were only 3-4 other parties seated when we walked in at 7pm. I noticed that the tables and decor have never been updated since the place opened and the wear and tear on the furniture is really showing. The menu hasn't changed much either, for better or for worse, except they removed the Korean chicken wings which was the best thing on the menu. We ordered a salad with chicken and a few pizzas. Chicken was extremely dry and the salad was overdressed with too many almonds. The pizzas were ok but very doughy. There was a live band playing mostly oldies and they were very loud and I couldn't enjoy dinner conversation because I couldn't hear anything. Stop here most every chance I get. It's a pizza place, but I don't think I've ever had their pizza. The paninis are so good I just never got to the pies. Poppers were ok. Tried for the first time today. Not bad, but nothing I would repeat. The Cajun dry rub wings are always amazing. Huge pieces with a crunchy skin and slightly salty Cajun rub. They have various iterations of chicken paninis. I've had several, and haven't been disappointed with one yet. Today, the howling wolf. Grilled chicken, Mozz, red onions, bacon- delicious. Surprisingly they all seem to be a little better on wraps, but you do your thing. Service during midday is not super, but I've seen them on a busy Friday and they can usually keep everyone happy. Can I give 6 stars?! We used to live in Stamford and absolutely love this hidden gem. When driving through this week, we HAD to stop for lunch. First, let's talk about the dry rub wings - best you can find anywhere!! Truly, SO GOOD! I love all of the sandwiches, you can not go wrong. I normally get them on a pressed wrap (which I think is the best way to order) but this time I tried it on a panini and it was still delicious. Happened upon this place as 2 other restaurants I wanted to go to were closed. I hadn't wanted pizza but was resigned to that. How surprised I was to find that they had REALLY great salads! Inside the first room is ok, but then there is a larger room and then a back room with a full bar, TVs all around, nice jazz mural, visuals . The beer list, however, is *stellar*. Although I've had great food dining at Coalhouse in the past, my most recent experience with delivery was disappointing. I found a huge bone when I bit into my pizza. It was the first slice, and my dinner was ruined. When I complained to Uber Eats, they subtracted that one item from the tab. They have two rooms for indoor sitting and then an outdoor countertop area. During the dinner rush, it was packed, but I was seated quickly. Came there for lunch during a weekday and it was completely empty. The food was pretty good. The pizza combinations are really interesting making it hard to choose which one to get. I got the favorite things pizza! It has pesto instead of tomato sauce.....life changing!!! Their salads and other dishes, like the ribs, are also delicious. They have a large beer selection, which they sell both by the glass and the pitcher. I ended up getting an ale from Two Roads. There are also some daily specials as well as happy hour offerings. Our fave, though, was the "Favorite Things" and we added the clover honey to it!!! Let me tell you that adding the clover honey was absolutely amazing! They should just make it a regular thing for that pizza! The variety of flavors in your mouth from the delicious garlic pesto, the smooth ricotta, the saltiness of the prosciutto and the sweetness of honey- wow, wow, wow! Highly recommend!!! I've been here multiple times and as much as I want to like the pizza, I don't. It is relatively average with way too much doughy, bread-like crust. After seeing their menu online I knew I had to try this place. The pizza choices were all very unique and had great ingredients. The restaurant itself is nice with fun decor. It is very large inside and has a grand bar area as well. The main entrance is a bit of a tight squeeze especially if there's a line. The place looked fairly busy and we were seated within a few minutes. The menu had a lot of good choices and the drink list was expansive. I loved how many items they had on tap. For a party of two we ordered the Parmesan truffle fries as an app and two entrees (sandwich and pizza). Food took a while to come and when the Parmesan truffle fries came they were pretty cold and soggy. They also didn't have much truffle taste to them. The pizza was good but a bit soggy as well making many of the toppings fall off as I was eating. I did really enjoy the habanero honey that was on the pizza though. Staff was ok at best. It took a while to initially be greeted and seated. Once our waitress came over she was very distracted and kept looking around the restaurant. She was not all that pleasant and was even a bit rude. I would definitely not return if she was my waitress again as she just made us feel rather uncomfortable. I've been slowly working my way through wing options in the Stamford area, hoping to find a gem. Alas, this was not that gem. I tried two of the hot wing flavors to compare them, the Mojo Hot Wings (spicy) and the Buffalo Supreme Wings (Spicy). I wasn't sure what the difference was, but when asked if I wanted blue cheese on the supreme wings I said no, and on the receipt it said regular, so I assume there's an option to have it come with crumbled blue cheese. The wings had good flavor (although not very spicy), but they weren't the best quality of meat and were REALLY dry. I know not everyone likes saucy wings, but if you do, definitely order extra sauce (they charge for this on seamless). The blue cheese was just ok (I love a good blue cheese). The celery and carrots were soggy because of how they were packaged. I know takeout fries can be hard, but the sweet potato fries were also very soggy, and I ended up not eating them. My family and I ordered takeout at Coalhouse after we heard good things about it. We waited a reasonable amount of time for the food but upon arriving at home, saw that the majority of our meals were missing several key food items. For example, one of us ordered the John Coltrane sandwich and the only thing inside was chicken and balsamic. It is missing all of the key ingredients listed on the menu. ??? I ordered Pasta with Broccoli Rabe, Chorizo, & Garlic. I asked for the meal WITHOUT CHEESE because I'm lactose intolerant. They gave me SO much cheese on it AND did not add any chorizo. Also, the pasta was tasteless and soggy. The rest of my family who ordered pizza didn't have any complaints. However, missing key ingredients in several meals isn't a good look. On a more positive note, the Lomo Saltado Rolls tasted like grandma's pot roast in a really big egg roll shell! Would recommend if going there. read more
