Our last evening in Duck, we decided to grab dinner from a local restaurant. I figured most restaurants were either packed with outdoor dining or closed, so I opted for carry-out. The food here is excellent, and the seafood was fresh. My fiancé and I shared mahi bites, steamed Old Bay shrimp and the scallops. All were delicious. The ambiance is cool and fun. They have such a cute outdoor seating section with live music and a little bar for drinks. Overall it is casual, fun and beachy. We could've spent hours here if not for all of the flies!! Once we got our food we could not keep them away. We had 7-10 flies swarming us as we attempted to eat. We gave up and took our take out containers to our car to finish. Overall- this place is a wonderful find with great food. A great place to hang out if not for all the flies. Let's face it, if you are driving up Route 12 on a Saturday afternoon to your rental home, it's going to be awful and stressful due to traffic. I always view our annual stop at Coastal Cravings as the "light at the end of the tunnel" after enduring the bumper to bumper traffic. ATMOSPHERE: As others have mentioned, there is no indoor seating. There is a massive tent set up in the back of the restaurant with ample picnic table seating available. Unfortunately, due to eating outdoors, there are flies. Lots of flies. I can't fault the restaurant for this, however. Sure, fly traps may help reduce the flies, but it's outside near the beach, there are going to be flies. The outdoor venue has a stage for live music and a walk-up bar. FOOD: The crabcake sandwich may be one of the best I've had in the OBX. Lightly fried, minimal filler, big chunks of crab. The remoulade is fantastic as well, I'd drink it. Fried shrimp was delicious as well. Fresh tasting shrimp and a solid batter. Usually at seafood restaurants, the fries are lacking. Not here through! Fries definitely hold their weight: crispy, well seasoned. Dip them in the remoulade and it's a match made in heaven. I've been coming to the OBX for ~15 years, have eaten at many more "formal" style places. But I think I might like the food here at a couple of the more "formal" style places. Coastal Cravings is a nice place to have breakfast and lunch, though because it is off-season (January) they are closed for dinner. The food was nicely portioned, fresh, and served hot from the kitchen, Staff was great the first day, and okay the last day we ate there. Only negative was when my wife requested a straw, the response that they don't carry straws came off a bit snippy/snotty. Would certainly go back, might just need to stop someplace else to get a straw for my wife first. read more

Wow! Dinner was perfect, as it's rare but the only negative is that we wanted more! We ordered the Buffalo Cauliflower for an appetizer, arriving shortly after to a basket full of the BEST fried cauliflower we've ever had out. Good food, iffy service We stopped in for lunch after shopping around all morning. Located on the main strip you could drive right by without noticing the place. While parking we noticed that across the parking lot they have a good sized outdoor bar and entertainment area with games. They also have a patio area for those wishing to dine outside. We were immediately seated inside and shortly greeted by our server. Our drink orders came quick and we ordered our food. While ordering I could tell that our server wasn't paying complete attention. While waiting my wife went to the bar to ask about a few wines and a certain beer on the menu. Not hard questions just clarification and the bartender was useless. When our orders arrived a side was incorrect which I know happens but remember that I noticed the server not paying attention. Also, we weren't asked how we wanted our burgers cooked. When they arrived they were medium at the most. The food was pretty good. The Tabasco Cauliflower was not spicy hot but had enough of a hint of the sauce flavor that I enjoyed it. The burgers were good other than we would have liked ground beef cooked a little longer. The fish tacos were assembled well and were not over fried. The fries that were received as sides were regular ol' frozen fries and weren't especially crispy. The star of the orders was the Ultimate Brie LT. My wife and I thank our fellow yelpers for honest reviews. You got that right, this hidden location is attached to a gas station. We had just arrived in Duck and didn't want to drive too far out. This restaurant is just 5 minutes from our rental house. We sat at the bar with a few other pairs of beach goers. The bartender was very helpful and provided good service. We started with spiced shrimp. These were large and the cocktail sauce provided a good combination with the spices. We also started with a basket of hush puppies. The order was very large and we had to take most of it home. Shrimp was the choice of the day so I ordered a basket of fried shrimp. This came with a nice basket of fries. Everything including my beer was very good. The ambiance in this small restaurant had a nice local vibe. Don't let the gas station deter you. It's definitely a hidden gem in Duck. read more

It was my first time here and what can I say but...wow. This is attached to a BP gas station of all things! Who knew? My friend Collins and I were not disappointed. We first went to the Tap Shack in back, grabbed a beer and listened to one really good local band that played Radiohead and other types of songs too in an outdoor area that was so well equipped: hammocks, dart boards, giant Jenga, pool table and patio furniture. Great harmony from the band. The Tap Shack has free live music there 7 days a week! One of my faves is there in August: Keller Williams. Getting back to the food, we found out that they were on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive in's and Dives show. I ordered Shrimp and Grits and this was so delicious. The grits had a smooth and crunchy texture and the shrimp tasted freshly caught. So good with a creole sauce. My friend had the seafood platter. Enjoyed the ambiance at the Tap Room outside, food was solid, as was the service. Definitely recommend. Only criticism is it can get a a bit noisy in the interior small space as it seems to be a favorite of families with infants and toddlers. read more

While we were a little taken back by this place being behind a gas station I can't say it wasn't a great experience. The food had great flavor and the service was excellent. The interior was modern and clean. The hush puppies and Lebanese style wings were so good. Had fish and chips on one day and the fish tacos for lunch on a different day. Coastal Cravings has been the single most exceptional dining experience thus far in OBX. I had the shrimp and grits as well as a variety of starters including the duck wontons and hush puppies which were excellent. Seriously we can't stop talking about the duck wontons days later. Even the children's menu items were met with approval from a couple of kids who are huge critics. Unexpected hero of the meal was the mango salsa that comes with the coconut shrimp. read more

We had a big party & all ate different items off the breakfast menu and everything was great. The GF bread roll, the grits. Pancakes are HUGE so bring your appetite. Bacon, potatoes, all delicious. Yes, it is attached to a gas station. I was looking for a casual place to eat lunch and seafood was a must. I walked right past this place a bit confused....is that a restaurant??? I walked around and asked someone in a gift shop. They recommended this place. I went back and it was busy. I sat at the bar which had about 8 seats. There was also booths and outside seating. The fish tacos did not disappoint. I heard the hushpuppies were good but did not get any but 3 people around me did. They must be good. Yes....I was eavesdropping. You did get a choice of fries, Cole slaw or potato salad. The Cole slaw was ok.....not my favorite. But the tacos were good. Lots of fried seafood on the menu but also salads. sandwiches and burgers. The Roast Turkey Brie sounds delicious. I did order a vodka soda.....hey...I am on vacation. What a rip off! $12!!!!!!! For a well vodka and soda. I pay that in nicer restaurants...not one attached to a gas station. They also have beer and wine. Service....not good. The bartender was extremely slow and just was not a rush to do anything. I sat there awhile before being acknowledged. And so did the customer next to me. She was nice enough but extremely slow.....no sense of urgency whatsoever. Food was good. Disappointed they didn't have crab legs when we went. Tried the scallops instead, very good. We also had the seafood platter which was delicious. I have to admit we were a bit surprised it was basically in the BP gas station. Turned out to be a very good meal. The only downside of eating outside were the flies. They weren't able to sit our large party together inside. With the amount of flies outside I would have opted to sit inside At separate tables. They had a band outside in the back which was nice. Food and service was amazing. We ordered inside to go and ate at the Tap Shack located behind. The Brie BLT sandwich and Fried Green Tomato Sandwich was so flavorful. What made it so great was Billie a delightful local who managed the Tap Shack yard. He retrieved our food from the take out window and deliver to us in the yard. He offered genuine conversation and great service. Brought our dog some ice water. My husband ordered from the Tap Shack grill and had an delicious Grilled Tuna bite sandwich. Great food, great vibe. We ended up coming here twice on our OBX vacation week. A quick drive down from Corolla. We loved the outdoor space with hula hoops for the kids, ping pong table, darts, live music. (The pool table was missing balls) They had a guy that came around and took our name and brought us our food from the restaurant, got us all the things we'd need. Loved his help! I would say, we're in the middle a pandemic and having all of us handle our own scooping of ice and getting glasses of water is not ideal. I'd much prefer the bartenders be so kind as to pour a quick drink of water rather than many dirty handed people be doing it for themselves. Also, the bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. They smelled terrible. Probably because it's so dark in there that people can't see where they're peeing. (The lights didn't come on, there was just a glow of red string lights or something.) So I'd suggest avoiding the bathroom. Otherwise a 5 star, perfect southern outdoor dining experience. read more

Stopped by an hour before close for a beer and side of fries. This was my second choice but NC Coast was packed with no room at the bar. Walked into Coastal and found plenty of room available. I sat at the bar and ordered. The beer was cold and from a good selection. Fries were obviously what remained after the dinner rush. I wouldn't recommend them. I mean, either don't offer them and say you don't have any left or start a new batch. Putting them out as your best and charging full price outs you out their for a review like this. It was half my order. This night McDonald fries would have been better at half the cost. My problem with that is you can't get a cold Kohlsch at McDs. I didn't want to spend more time there or order another beer given this less than hoped for service. I would have expected a "How was everything?" But nope. No concern shown. We eat at Coastal Cravings every time we visit Duck and always have had a good meal. This year the food was average and the service was disappointing. When the woman server approached us she wasn't friendly at all. The menu was more limited than the past. The fried shrimp baskets were good but the jerk chicken was way too spicy. The food was good. We love steamed mussels, I must say they were ok, not a lot of flavor. I m all about flavor, knock my socks off flavor. My wife's crab cakes were knock your socks good. My greek salad. Tomato too large, No Kalamata olives. With balsamic vinaigrette. Was served way later imto the meal. Server was new, so she should be good in a week or two. She did check on us often. Writing this negative review about one of my usually favorite places to dine, Coastal Cravings, actually hurts. Let me preface this review by saying Coastal Cravings has always been one of the few restaurants in OBX that is always on my "gotta get there" list each time I vacation in Nags Head. Others include Food Dudes Kitchen, The Red Drum, Fish Heads Bar & Grill, Cahoons Market, Owen's Restaurant, San & Omie's, The Kill Devil Grill, High Cotton BBQ and several others. I mention this because I'm neither a food snob or a fast food franchise person. I appreciate great LOCAL restaurants and the people who work hard to make OBX a special go-to food destination. Enough of the backstory...let's get to the point. This evening was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had in OBX. Coastal Cravings serves consistently good food and the service is always on point. And tonight lived up to both those reputations. The Oysters Rockefeller, shrimp and grits and scallops were all excellent. And, as always, the hush puppies and Bloody Marys were outstanding. What then was the problem you may be asking by now? It was the uninvited and undesirable guests...FLIES. Hundreds of them. We couldn't shoo them away fast enough...they were all over every plate and glass that was on our table. The picture only shows a single moment that was actually worse than it looks. They absolutely ruined our Father's Day celebration, greatly disappointing me and my 85-year old father. We spent $125 on food and drink between us and when I spoke with the manager while leaving, all he could offer was, "I'm sorry about that." Even the servers acknowledged that guests were so disgusted that they were taking their food to their cars or homes rather than eat in what was worse than most barnyards experience. Harsh? Possibly. However, one server told us that the problem wasn't confined to the evening we dined there. They also had a similar problem a week earlier with mosquitos. Hey, I understand there are going to be pests when dining outdoors. It comes with the territory. However, knowing the problem exists and ignoring a solution like traps and exterminators is not forgivable. If a restaurant decides to only have outdoor dining while keeping the indoor dining shut down, it is their duty to provide a clean and pest-free environment. From what I was told by several staffers, there has been no effort by management to tackle the problem. And when all management can offer when you politely and discreetly voice your disappointment is, "I'm sorry about that," it shows they're not concerned with fixing the problem. So, until Coastal Cravings reopens their indoor dining, I won't be back and I offer a word of caution to those who object to dining with insects that researchers suspect can harbor at least 65 illnesses that infect people including food poisoning, dysentery, diarrhea and may also transmit the eggs of parasitic worms, which cause their own issues. read more

Flies! EVERYWHERE!!!!!!! Seriously disgusting! There are trash cans sitting out in the corners with swarms of flies. All over our table when we didn't even have food yet. Service was slow which is to be expected, but they finally brought out our appetizers and one minute later brought our entrees. Once we had our food the flies were everywhere. I couldn't eat my food there were so many and I was constantly shooing them away. Finally left and ate in the car with my daughter while my husband paid and we left. food was pretty good. Crab cakes and the scallops were nice! The rest was nothing special. Fries were soggy. If we ever go back we will just get the food to go. This spot offers tasty food (known for their seafood options) from breakfast to dinner and beyond. They also sell seafood pots to go where they prepare them and you take the pots filled of delicious seafood home with you (they have a drive through). The breakfast/lunch options are very reasonably priced as well as being delicious! They have a nice outdoor patio area right outside the interior dining room. However, my (new) favorite part of Cravings is their newly established outdoor bar and patio area behind the restaurant. It is a really cool set up with a tiki bar and a stage for their live music every night. They also have ALL SORTS OF GAMES from giant Jenga, dice, corn hole sets, ping pong, darts, and the first outdoor pool table I have come across. Cravings was featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, drive-ins, and dives show for their excellent food but that aired before this sweet outdoor bar was erected. EXCELLENT!!!!!!!! We've been coming down here for over 40 years, the last several years in Duck and we love it. First time at Coastal Cravings and we will definitely we back in May. Service was so fast on drinks and food. Our server who's name we forgot to ask, was from Pittsburgh originally, and we are a party of 5 from the burg. We all had something different and everyone loved their meals. I have a hard time finding clams strips and theirs are delicious. As where the fish an chips, shrimp and chips, fish tacos, pork BBQ. Can't say enough good things. Go there!!!!! read more
