Fried Brussel's Sprouts
Shanita F.

Bbq spots are only as good as their meats. Specifically their pork (or beef if you weren't raised right). Disclaimer: I don't eat red meat, so my opinion of this place lives and dies on the quality of their wings. And they were, MEH. First of all, the wings were huge. Like suspiciously large. Immediately I thought: "Okay, these are definitely pumped full of hormones." But I paid $12 for SIX wings, so I was eating them regardless. I was told they were smoked and then flash-fried. I also ate them without any sauce because GOOD smoked wings don't need a be sauced! Unfortunately, the wings were just okay. Not bad, but not great either. I didn't even want to finish them. On to the sides. I ordered the potato salad and Brussels sprouts. The potato salad had absolutely no taste. It tasted like boiled potatoes, mayo and green onions. No mustard. Is that what makes it a Creole potato salad? You don't want it. But I'm really annoyed about the fried Brussels sprouts. I was given what looked like six or seven halves. So...maybe 3.5 full sprouts? That's it. For $5. I'm upset as about that tiny portion. I definitely overpaid and definitely am underwhelmed.

Stuffed BBQ Baked Potato with Brisket

I came here for a quick lunch break. When I walked in I was greeted with a smile & a friendly hello ready to take my order. I ordered the brisket potato & it was excellent! The owner was also behind the counter cutting the fresh meat himself in front of you & also was very friendly asking if I was enjoying my food & chatted with the me. It is definitely a "hole in the wall" gem. It is so hard to find good BBQ & this was the best I have had in a while! I will define back to try more!

Reuben

I enjoyed a Rueben with baked beans and mac n cheese. The Reuben is packed with meat. It was pretty good. The baked beans and Mac were ok. I enjoyed them more when I scooped a little of each on one spoon. The staff is very friendly and offer great service.

Burnt Ends

This was a best BBQ I've had! It's a tiny shop with a lot of flavor and character! As soon as we stepped in, we were greeted by very kind staff and by Hank Williams Jr singing over the radio. I also had to use the restroom and it was super clean. My husband and I got smoked burnt ends, smoked spare ribs, a Texas Twinkie, cracklin, and pepper jack Mac. We also got a complimentary sample of pulled pork. The food popped out so fast!! Unfortunately we had started eating before I took the pictures but it was so delicious! We highly recommend the burnt ends, ribs, and definitely the Texas Twinkie. Next time we're in NOLA, we're coming back!!

Soul Bowl

Absolutely loved the "Soul Bowl" that I ordered. Cheesy, salted, and topped with tangy bbq. I also loved the burnt ends we got to share with the table. We would love to come back when in New Orleans

I visited Cochon King BBQ after trying their burnt ends at the Blues and BBQ Festival. The food was amazing. I ordered a family platter and shared it with my friends. My only complaint is that I wish there were more ribs on the platter. The dirty rice was some of the best I've had. The mac and cheese obviously isn't home cooked, but it's good for a restaurant. The staff was very friendly, and they even checked to make sure we were satisfied with everything.

Smoked chicken wings

The place is great. The smoke smell lets you know it's a bbq joint. Staff was so kind and accommodating. Our food came out hot, presented with care and most important - delicious. Smoked wings, pulled pork, brisket, ribs, cracklins, potato salad and Mac n cheese. Definitely a new fav!

Pulled pork Soul Bowl

We went here on a whim because a seafood food truck nearby was closed and it was the best decision!!! Probably some of the best BBQ I've ever had and amazing sauce. We ended up buying extra BBQ sauce to bring home. Highly recommend this place and I hope to go back to LA so I can eat here again!!

Wings ($10 for 6 pieces)

Hear me out, I've read that this place can be a hit or miss depending on the day and I think I must have come on a "miss" day, unfortunately. They're a new business, so it's possible they haven't quite nailed down consistency yet. I think you should keep my review in mind, but this place may be worth a try! Cochon King is a cute little dive-y shop with tables for eating there, and you can definitely smell something good before you even walk in the door. First of all, let me tell you that the prices here are fantastic! They offer cheap meals that fill you up; they don't skimp at all here and they have very generous portions. We tried their 3-meat combo platter ($26) with a side of their "pepper jack mac" and smoked beans. We got the brisket, smoked ribs, and turkey for the 3 meats. The sides were delicious, and the turkey was AMAZING! Juicy, flavorful, tender, soft, and smoky. Everything you can ask for in BBQed turkey. However, the brisket and ribs were not as awesome. The brisket and ribs were both really tough, dry, and none of the fat was rendered. The seasoning, flavor, and the smokiness were good, but it wasn't tender or juicy. A good smokehouse barbeque should be able to cook the meat to where it's falling off the bones and the fat gets rendered, but this wasn't it. I really had to cut into the meat to get them to bite-sized pieces. We ended up finishing the brisket, which was okay, but the ribs were not really edible as it were. We took the ribs home and threw it in a pot of beans we were cooking, and only then did the ribs become soft enough to eat. We also tried the special of the day, which was the $10 chicken BBQ plate. It comes with some pickled onions and cukes and a side of potato salad, which were all good. However, the chicken was disappointing. The flavor was there along with the perfect amount of char, but maybe the heat was too high or it was left on the heat for a bit too long? This meat was dry and tough too. We had a few bites and took the rest of it home, but we didn't even end up finishing it another day. This is rare for us, we're good about finishing leftovers! If the chicken had been on-point, this would have been a deal you couldn't beat! We tried the smoked wings ($10 for 6 pieces) and this was a disappointment as well. Same issue with the meat being too dry and tough. We got some ranch dressing that helped add a bit of moisture to each bite, but it just wasn't very good. All in all, I was really hoping to love this place, but I didn't this time. Maybe I could give this place a shot again, and it'll be on a day when it's a "hit"!

I would rather eat explosive diarrhea taco bell than this place. Everything tastes like cardboard. Spend your money elsewhere.

The Poboy here is to die for!…read more Honestly I was a bit intimidated walking through here alone, going past a rowdy crowd of mainly older white Gen X men to end up in this hole of a wall to order through an even smaller hole in the wall service booth. The ordering experience was a bit gruff and rough around the edges, but from then on, everything went right. First, you can hang out in the bar area at Erin Rose (I swear the crowd was friendlier than they looked) and eat there if there's space. I highly recommend their Paradise Peach, which seems to be from a local brewery. The bright, peach flavor of the lager does well to wash down the sandwich in the summer heat. I went with an order of the Braised Beef Debris Poboy and this is hands down not just the best Poboy I've ever had in my life, but the best beef or steak any sandwich I've ever had in my life! I wolfed it down so quickly and have to say the pickled green bean and banana peppers with that spike of horseradish sauce really sent this Poboy soaring! The braised beef was absolutely perfect and tender, amazingly so! I can get a bit picky about beef because I hate it when it's tough or gristly or has too much fatty parts that won't melt down, but I didn't have a problem with any of that. I'm no butcher, but seemed like they used a good part of the beef of what's already a fairly quality cow (Louisiana Wagyu Beef I recall reading) or maybe it was the whole braising process, but I wish I could have this for days! I'm going to be sad going back to Houston and not being able to eat this, but hopefully it'll still be around and just as amazing next time I'm back in town.

After a couple of beers, we noticed the little po'boy counter tucked in the back and figured we'd give it a shot. Best decision of the day. The sandwich was packed with flavor, served fresh, and exactly what you want after spending some time at a great New Orleans dive bar. I love finding places like this, no hype, no gimmicks, just really good food hidden where you'd least expect it. If you're grabbing a drink at Erin Rose, do yourself a favor and don't leave without ordering a po'boy. You'll thank yourself later.

We ordered: Fried Okra, Cold Big Easy, and Da Yat. For the fried okra, it was a bit salty but a good snack to bite on. Cold Big Easy tasted like a 'ol regular sub of Roast Beef and Ham. It tasted exactly as described, just nothing crazy. Da Yat was good for my first half of the sub, but it started to feel very heavy at the end. Lastly, spice. As someone who loves spice , but has lower than average tolerance, it wasn't super spicy. Yes, there is spice and it can build up each bite (especially with the fried Okra), but it will not make you feel like your tongue is on fire. Spice enthusiasts may want to request the more spice. I give it a 3/5 because it was good and does the job of a Po Boy, but it was not out of the world. I am content coming here as one and done. I still recommend this place to tourists in the area wanting to try a Po Boy. And I'm most definitely sure this place would hit even better after a fun night out in Bourbon St. especially as a late night drunk meal

Everything is made from scratch (except the bread, which they source locally), and you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. My personal favorites are the Surf & Turf and the James Brown. The Surf & Turf gives you get the best of both worlds (shout out to Hannah Montana). Look it up kids. You get the slow-cooked roast beef with gravy plus fresh Gulf shrimp. Shut the front door! The James Brown is just as incredible: juicy BBQ beef, pepper jack cheese, fried shrimp, and a hot sauce mayo. Bring napkins - you'll need them. Pro tip: go with a group and order a few different po'boys to share. You'll want to try everything. You made it to the end, so here we go. I feel like gate keeping (look it up old-timers), but I'm going to be generous because I love y'all. In order to skip the line, go to the bar area and find a high top or seat at the bar. Well, plot twist -- when we got there, the super sweet bartender Jenny broke the news that they had just changed the hours and were no longer open on Thursdays. (Check out my photo for the latest hours as of March 2025 -- you're welcome.) Here's the kicker -- we had already schlepped all the way from the French Quarter on foot and were sitting at around 13,000 steps for the day. We earned that burger! But, when life gives you closed burger joints, you pivot to cocktails -- and Jenny had us covered. Hubbs went for a Bloody Mary (solid choice), and I opted for a vodka soda... okay, maybe three vodka sodas -- but who's counting? The place itself? Total dive bar perfection. A couple of colorful locals popped in for a quick drink, the vibe was laid-back, and the drinks were strong enough to make you forget about the burger heartbreak (at least temporarily). Jenny was a gem -- attentive, funny, and quick with a refill. We were still mourning the loss of those smash burgers when someone at the bar confirmed, "Oh yeah, they are that good." Fantastic.
