    House made onion rings
    Joe T.

A serous looking dive with hard to figure out parking. Don't let that stop you. Park at the house next door (signs say it's for Parenton parking only) or on the street. It's a small, run down looking building but very clean. Counter service is great and food was delivered quickly. (Okay - well the crusty old lady at the counter is nice to the customers, but her patience is worn all the way out with the kitchen staff. The way they're going at it, they must be related.) House made onion rings are super thin cut and hot and fresh from the fryer. Very good. A little ketchup and a shot of Perique pepper sauce on them is perfect. (I've never seen Perique before, but it's good.) The small shrimp po-boy is not small. But it's hot and fresh on crusty Leidenheimer bread. The shrimp are fresh and perfectly fried. No tiny frozen gumbo shrimp here. Dressed means lettuce, tomato, pickles and a heavy dose of mayonnaise. Oh so good. I'm not in this area often, so I originally headed to the joint next door because I knew it was okay. So glad they were closed today and I discovered this gem instead. I think you will be, too.

There was nothing left of a roast beef po-boy!

I got the fried shrimp and oyster basket. I kid you not - the juiciest most flavorful fried shrimp I have ever had! My pictures don't do it justice!! Great variety of local beers, other cool items on the menu. Ambiance was cool, you could tell it had been here while. If you're in the area be sure to drop in. I toured in for the pic and they said it was too long: While it looks plain, they are the best fried shrimp I have ever had. Juicy, seasoned just right, and both the shrimp and oyster came out hot!!! While I don't get a lot of quality oysters in central Kentucky, I can't be considered an expert.... They were spot on also!! Check it out and enjoy!!!

The Rivershack Tavern is well-named! It is located on River Road in a historic building that has a…read moregreat deal of character. This building might be considered by some a shack, and it certainly is a bar. However, it also serves up some amazing food. It's historic inside as well as outside, having classic signs, posters, and other New Orleans memorabilia displayed on virtually every surface, including the ceilings. Also noteworthy are their barstools, which have amusing legs attached. The interior is rather dark, even in the middle of the day, but don't let this deter you. Your eyes will quickly adjust. This might be an advantage if your visit is to engage in day-drinking! However, if your visit is to eat, first look for the board displaying the Daily Special. These are a great choice and may include things not normally on the menu. Variety is the spice of life and all... However, the menu is adequate for most any purpose. There are a great variety of sandwiches, wraps, salads, plates, and appetizers! I like that the sandwiches can be customized with sides. One can swap out regular fries for sweet potato fries, or there are really great and crispy tater tots! One can even opt for a bowl of gumbo or soup! Some of these changes involve a slight up-charge, but are worth it. Speaking of the soups and gumbos, these are really great choices. I happened to be there when French Onion Soup was part of the daily special, and it was amazing! Had a great big toasty chuck of bread with cheese on top, and the soup was rich and delicious. Their gumbo is a substantial choice, with great and deep flavors. I also recommend their BLT, which pairs well with a bowl of soup. The waitstaff is friendly and helpful and the prices are fair. This place is an experience that one should have while in the area. It's definitely a place you'll want to return to!

Growing up in the Mid-South, iron skillet cornbread, fried chicken, greens, coleslaw, stewed okra,…read moreand black-eyed peas weren't comfort food they were lots of weekday meals. Between my momma, my granny, and me, we've always cooked those dishes exactly the way our taste buds like them. Because of that, I don't order them out very often. Sure, I'll hit Willie Mae's or grab McHardy's when I need a fried chicken fix, but it's few and far between. High Hat is an exception. It's one of my go-to spots when I'm feeling lazy and craving that Delta-style cooking. Amy and I stopped in on a Tuesday night. I had the fried chicken with red beans and rice. Top Hat is one of the very few places I'll order red beans outside my own kitchen. Amy went with the coleslaw, cornbread, stewed okra, and black-eyed peas. The star of the meal is the fried chicken. My family always used a flour wash, but Top Hat's breading is incredibly thin with just a hint of cornmeal. It isn't what I grew up eating, but man...it is good. Add a little of the table hot sauce and it gets me every single time. The sides are solid across the board. The black-eyed peas are perfect, and the stewed okra tastes like somebody's grandma was in the kitchen. If I could change one thing, I'd make the coleslaw a little crisper, chop it a bit finer, and give it another spoonful of mayo, a splash of malt vinegar, and just a pinch of sugar. But that's my preference, not a complaint. Don't overlook the catfish either. It doesn't play. They can get busy, and the service sometimes moves at the pace of an August stroll through the park. But honestly...that's part of the charm. Good Southern food isn't meant to be rushed, and neither is High Hat. If you're looking for a taste of the Delta without leaving Louisiana, this is a mighty fine place to start.

The bar has four seats, and there is no host stand. I had to wait a couple of minutes to be seated because they were busy, but that was fine. I started with the complimentary amuse bouche, a duck liver crostini, and some house-made bread. The butter was lovely. There was a list of specials; one of them was a potato dish in honor of Dolly Parton. It was probably the best part of my meal. I got the three course Coolinary meal: a scallop dish, the wagyu brisket and fries, and the Krispy Kreme bread pudding. Everything was good. I loved the citrus component on the scallops, but the fries were a bit salty and the dessert was too sweet for me. I will say that I heard the people at the table next to mine rave about the bread pudding. My server, Sophie, was attentive. She offered ice cream (at no charge) to go with my bread pudding. She was also apologetic when letting me know that the kitchen was backed up. My courses still came at the perfect pace for my liking, even though they were busy. Overall, this was a great dining experience.
