Our favorites are two of their unique appetizers. We had the Mexican fries, a large platter of hot fries with queso, tomato, onions and chorizo.. do yummy! At first glance, I wasn't sure if it was a takeout place or a restaurant, but I could see it was a dine-in restaurant upon entering. The ambiance is rather dark but with a pleasant atmosphere with colorful decor. I was surprised that there weren't more people there at prime lunch time. I was promptly seated and served with tortilla chips and salsa while I reviewed the menu. The chips were thicker than I prefer and the salsa was rather thin/watery for my taste. The flavor of the salsa, however, was good. I ordered the lunch "Special Burrito" with shredded chicken and guacamole salad. It was promptly served. I would have preferred an entree with beans and rice but my server informed me that the beans were fried in lard; I'm not a fan of lard and there were no other bean options. The chicken burrito was decent and the guacamole was fresh. The fresh guacamole was the best part. I added some of the watery salsa to give the dish more flavor, but it mixed with the watery bland creamy red sauce that was already part of the burrito. It wasn't bad aside from the watery texture but definitely nothing I would crave. It was a fairly quick lunch that cost approximately $7.50 (only water as a beverage) before tip. But it just wasn't quite five stars. The queso is not good. It has a decent flavor, but it is super watery. I also don't like that none of their giant burritos come automatically with rice and beans. If I am ordering a $14 burrito even if it's huge, it should really come with rice and beans. Also, I wish they had a few more appetizer options like Mexican street corn. While they did have some nachos, a few basic dips and some Ramen, I just feel like they could do a little more on the appetizer front. Wrong! While El Arena DOES have a breakfast menu, they do not offer huevos con chorizo. We asked if we could order it off and there seemed to be confusion. I ordered the Breakfast Burrito instead. It was delicious and something I would definitely order again. The decor inside was fantastic and I loved looking at all the luchador art work. The restaurant wasn't busy at all. I was a little annoyed because I asked for coffee - it's on the menu - and I was told they didn't have any. My only complaint. Well that and the paper lined trays to serve food. That always irritates me because it never fails to cut into your food and cut paper with it.

POSITIVES: The margaritas have a very pleasant taste. Not too strong, but they taste pretty much the way I think a marg should taste. (My wife disagreed, by the way. She didn't even like the margs). I'd say that the table side guacamole is pretty good. It's better at El Vaquero, but it's pretty good here. Also, the service was great; friendly and fast. The flan for desert was pretty decent, too. My chicken and beef enchiladas were not worth eating--I stuck with the guac and chips and let my husband have them. My husband got the lobster enchilada which he liked but I thought was weird. This is not "authentic" Mexican food. Anyone who calls it that probably just A) likes the food here and B) has heard other people use the phrase and wants to sound smart and cultured. Basic, reliable, but also delicious! I always take out as a great sign in a Mexican restaurant if the white staff has difficulty speaking English, that is the case here, lol. Having said that every server I've ever had has always been super friendly and welcoming to me. Over the years I've typically gone with their Pollo Loco, which is a simple dish prepared with thin slices of chicken over rice with cheese sauce. I have often lamented that I can't get this particular dish back home. The chicken is always tender, and the cheese sauce is always perfect. Nice crispy chips and delicious not too hot salsa complete the experience. About the only thing I haven't done here is have an alcoholic beverage, on my most recent visit my wife had a margarita and indicated it was delicious. I'm so glad this place is here, and frankly I wish they would open a location in my hometown.
