Was at a neighboring restaurant the other day and noticed this Mexican restaurant and decided to give it a try. We went in and were seated right away, atmosphere was nice and the waitress was very nice. We were past the "lunch special" time frame so went ahead and ordered off the regular menu. Price was still good and food arrived quickly. The rice and beans were good, I had a chicken burrito with my meal but it was just okay. I think there was supposed to be meat and cheese in it but I could only see the chicken. The chicken kind of had the cooked, refrigerated and the heated back up taste so it wasn't my favorite. However, judging by the location, the restaurant atmosphere and the friendly staff... I will definitely give it another try and order something else next time. read more

Went back to this restaurant after our other favorite Mexican restaurant closed. The food has always been good, no problems there. Recently, they have begun charging for chips and salsa after 2 baskets. I guess that wouldn't be a problem if the baskets of chips were at least full. I was told the reasoning behind the charge was to offset the cost of people who don't eat their chips. That's not my problem, chips don't last with my family. We won't be going back. read more

Melted polystyrene takeout containers. Food was put in the takeout containers too hot. It melted the containers and potentially contaminated the food! This is unacceptable for a restaraunt to make this over sight. They should use a different material for takeout and use safer methods. There are a LOT of Mexican food options in this area, so we had never tried this place - now I'm sure we'll be back! We went to a movie with friends and then headed to Be Wok for dinner. The friends we were with thought Mexican sounded better than Asian that night, so we headed in. It was a nice surprise! I had the Chimichanga, and found it stuffed with chicken and perfectly cooked. Our friends had tamales and enchiladas, and liked both. The service was excellent and fast, and the portions were generous. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars was that my husband had the Chile Colorado burrito, and wasn't impressed. He's used to Uneada Burrito, which serves enormous burritos with a ton of meat. This one he said was "okay", but was skimpy on the meat. Hence the four stars instead of five. read more

If you had asked me about this restaurant in mid-2014, I would have offered up a pretty stellar review. On that visit, I had a lovely experience with the La Compuesta and although I forget now what the other person ordered, they were very happy with it. In 2015, I was there on two separate occasions. Once for the Chile Relleno and once for the Camarones en Crema. The Relleno was nothing to brag about. I was largely unimpressed with the doughy texture, flavorless sauce and the complete lack of heat. But the Camarones En Crema was the worst... so insanely delicious... until I came across the long and disgusting HAIR that my dining companion could see from the opposite side of the table, just about the time I realized it was there. Our waitress offered to bring another plate... but I was so turned off by the hair, I couldn't imagine another round. Out of state friends and I went to Cocina Michoacana Sonora in April 2017. I thought we would give it once last chance. We were treated to soggy tacos, just drenched and ruined by the juice from every source on the plate. No one could finish their food, it was that wet and unappetizing. I planned to take my just passable beans, rice and a taco home, to 'repair' it with a fresh tortilla... so I asked for a box, and my waitress promptly picked up one of my friends' plates and sat it right on top of mine. When I tried to stop her (too late), she had the audacity to ask me if I still wanted it. She had cost me half my meal, but she gave me a weak 'sorry', and never offered to compensate me for the ruined plate of food. Over time, and three years later, there has been some weird and unappetizing changes with the food here. In theory, the menu seems to have a nice selection of standard Mexican fare, along with a few interesting specialties. Somehow however, the cooks there have lost their passion for creating a pleasant meal and some members of the wait staff just don't care. Bottom Line: The past three years with this place have been a one-way trip to the bottom of a spiral staircase. If this was 2014, I would be telling you all to go there. But it's 2017, Cocina Michoacana in Sonora has died, and I don't advise attending the wake. read more

My husband and I have eaten here a few times over the years and the food is fine to mediocre. We decided to try again this past Monday and even though it took 15-20 to get our order placed, our food arrived LESS than TWO minutes later. My husband walked out to grab something from the car and when he came back to the table our appetizer bean dip, his carnitas entree, our sons quesadilla and my shrimp quesadilla were all done. Well just in the last 2 months they have messed up our orders 4 times!!! TWICE IN ONE NIGHT! It has gotten ridiculous and tonight we ordered a "burrito gigante" which is a #36. Other than being told to sit anywhere on the right, the service was okay. We sat down at a table that hadn't been cleaned, as that was the only kind available. The waiter was polite, and brought a rag to clean off the table, but we had to take menus off a nearby table. The food was okay, not great, but okay. I had 2 cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. The enchiladas were seasoned well, but the enchilada sauce was, well, watery, as were the beans. When one uses a fork to eat beans, they are not supposed to be so thin that they run through the fork, dribbling all the way to your mouth! The food was seasoned well, but the portions were small. While I won't say this was a bad restaurant, I also won't recommend it it friends, either. read more

This is our favorite stop for Mexican food. We bring our family and sometimes family from out of town here. I enjoy the burrito picante. Look out though, it's spicy! The fajita salad is also excellent. Everything I order I can barely finish and I often leave with some leftovers My boys enjoy everything off the kids menu and often have more food than they can finish, with prices you can't beat! The bottomless chips and salsa are the best! We usually have a couple baskets and try to keep ourselves from eating more so we have room for our entree. The first time I was in Sonora I ended up going to some Chinese place that truth be told was just awful.. so this time we decided to try mexican food. The place was fairly busy, so that was a good sign. First of all, the staff was very friendly and helpful. I decided to try the chili relleno and veggie taco combo. I was a little nervous as I have actually never had a chili relleno before... shocking.. I know. I just want to say.. it was so very good. I think this might be one of my new favorite foods. I really enjoyed my meal. I come up to this area every couple months so I will most likely be back to eat there again sometime. I am definitely a fan. We stopped by the Groveland location on our way home from Yosemite on Sunday night, and they had a really long wait. Attempting to balance our desire to get home before midnight and still enjoy delicious Mexican food, we decided to high tail it to the Oakdale location and sneak in before their 9pm closing time. We arrived at 8:45pm to a packed house. My husband asked our waiter if there was any way that he could sneak our order in before the gigantic groups of post-football game high schoolers that filled the restaurant, and he said he'd try. Reyes, our superhero waiter got us in and out of there in a flash, and the food was as good as ever. Thanks for helping us get home at a reasonable hour! You rock! Ohhhh! Yummy!!! My mouth is already watering. Cocina is the best Mexican food restaurant in Sonora, CA. Me and my granddaughter come here all the time! We are definitely regulars. Strongly recommend the tostadas they have. So good. My granddaughter gets the same thing all the time which is a small bean and cheese burrito with a side of rice and beans. Don't get me started with the beans! DELICIOUS!!! There is not a lot of people when we come which is nice because its like your the only ones but i feel that they deserve more customers. Completely disappointed. Not authentic Mexican food. We ordered two shrimp plates, completely covered in oil, only four shrimp & no flavor. Even the rice was drenched in oil. My plate (camarones al mojo de ajo), came with cheese and peppers when a true authentic plate does not have that. $80 worth of food and we left everything. Waitress brought us the wrong plate, second waitress wasn't sure how a wine margarita came, (highly disappointed) wine margarita tasted just like margarita mix with no taste of alcohol.
