They are truly unique...& it's not always for the better but for the most part it works. The inside embraces an old Mexican ranchero kind of feel. The food is true to it's Michocan roots which is why if you're looking for traditional Mexican burritos you might be in for a surprise. The burritos taste best wet and are better in a green sauce than in a red. The tacos (taqueria style) are great and taste awesome with the salsa & cabbage slaw. Let me just start by stating the date and time in the beginning of this review so if the owner by chance reads this he/she will know who to speak with about this awful experience. SUNDAY -AUGUST 4, 2019 6:15 pm. Whoever was working in the kitchen/ waitstaff should seriously be spoken to about the appropriate way to treat returning customers as well as how recurring mistakes (4 times) should be rectified. The last 4 times I have gone to this restaurant for take out I have ordered the same thing every time and have had the same mistake happen every time. I order a VEGGIE CHIMICHANGA WITH GREEN SAUCE , they ask are you ok with the green sauce having meat in it, I always reply with yes. The first two times I got home and had red sauce on the chimichanga, I called and spoke with a woman who apologized and said it would not happen again. The third time I called in a take out chimichanga with green sauce and extra green sauce on the side , I got home and had a chimichanga smothered in red sauce with two small sides of GREEN SAUCE. I then called and complained, the woman told me The next time I came in/called I would get my meal for free. So here we are today, called in a chimichanga with green sauce as well as two half compuestas- one with chicken and one with pork. I told the woman on the phone I was promised a free meal due to so many mistakes made prior, she replied with an "ok" . To me that means she understood and was complying with the fact that my chimichanga was free. However when I arrived to pick up the food I was told that they would not be able to comp the chimichanga because they did not have the authority to comp the meal and no one had written down my name and reason for the comp. I tried to speak with one of the women about the mistakes made prior to today but I still got the same answer. I paid for my food, expressed that I would not be leaving a tip because things were not at all rectified , and left. I get home, open the box, and to my surprise have no green sauce on top of the chimichanga. For as long as I can remember, anything with sauce typically has sauce on top of the dish. Green sauce, red sauce doesn't matter, there is always a meal smothered in sauce if the dish calls for it. Which the chimichangas I've ordered in the past always have. Any picture you look at in the menu has some kind of sauce on top of the dish. I cut the chimichanga open and there didn't appear to be any sauce inside either. I drive back down to the restaurant and explain my issue with the food. I was told rudely by a woman with black hair, in a bun, that they they had put it inside the chimichanga and I should have asked for EXTRA SAUCE IF I WANTED IT ON TOP. We had the box open for both parties to see and though you could clearly see no sauce had been added inside she still persisted that she "watched" the cook add it. I explained I have never had to ask for extra sauce in order to get sauce on top. She then rudely , while smirking, REPEATEDLY asked IS EXTRA SAUCE WHAT YOU WANT ? IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT? THEN GRABBED A 16oz drink cup , filled it with green sauce and said, HERES YOUR EXTRA SAUCE. We argued for a bit about how I improperly ordered my meal and how I would not be getting a comp. She wrote my name down (well I'm not convinced she did) but she acted like she did. And I left....With a cold chimichanga that she did not offer to re make, and a full drink cup of green sauce. I went back home, took a couple bites of the chimichanga and found a shrimp, yes, a shrimp in my food. Obviously, this was a gesture of "we really don't give a fuck about your business" OR they are just so oblivious that somehow a shrimp ended up in my food. It's unfortunate that this business blatantly does not care about customers or quality food. I think I have come to the conclusion that because there are only a few decent restaurants in this town to eat at, they have returning customers by default , therefore they do not care what's so ever about making things right; at least the staff tonight did not. Again, if the owner by chance reads this, I hope that you seriously sit your staff down and speak with them about the appropriate way to treat customers and how to correct simple mistakes. I WILL NOT BE EATING AT COCINA MICHOACANA EVER AGAIN. Word of mouth is huge in this town and tourists always read yelp reviews!!!!!!!!! Cocina Michoacana was a great dinner for my family and I. Reasonably priced, lovely service, and above all, fresh and tasty food! Standard orange Mexican rice and ordinary refried beans are given a savory plus with their white cheese-which also added a great flavor to the tacos. The chile verde had a nice spice to it, but it didn't overpower the food-a pleasant spiciness that wasn't a battle to get rid of. The pork was savory and tender. The tacos (carne asada) also benefitted from that great spice, and the flour tortillas were delicious warmed or fried. The guacamole was flavorful and the portions were large. This is a great place to go for a nice warm meal that will surely be satisfying-and is, in my opinion, worth more than what you pay for it. read more

The food is great! The service on the other hand is terrible!!!! We got out drinks right away but it seemed like our waitress completely forgot about us because it took so long for us to order, when I looked around she was just standing at the counter. We finally ordered and it took 40 minutes to get food to our table of 5 but 15 minutes longer for me to receive my food. So by the time everyone was done eating, I had just started. Chicken enchiladas for $9 that are only dark meat chicken and the TINIEST bean and cheese burrito I have ever seen for $3.75!! This is next door to Lisa Nails salon. So I ordered a chicken burrito I have to sauce that goes on the top, put on the side. Once I got home very little cheese they had add little bit of sour cream the chicken with fresh shred it but this thing was dry and I don't want my burrito wet on the outside I think the sauce for me should go inside. This place was wonderful! As a Mexican, I don't like to order certain foods because some foods don't look or taste homemade. However, I ordered green chicken enchiladas and they were AWESOME! Since I was staying in the area, I went back again and got a combination plate of green chicken enchiladas with a chile relleno. Pure deliciousness!! I really want to like this place . The lady that's always there running the show seems very nice. The first time I ate here I had a burrito it was pretty decent. I really do like the red salsa and bean dip. The chips were nothing special. The second time I came here I got enchiladas. The chicken was fairly bland and the beef was pretty decent. The beans were super runny but tasted OK. You need a spoon to eat them. The rice was the worst rice I ever had in my life. I won't be back. Cocina is mediocre at best only because it basically tastes like every other Mexican spot in the foothills. Rice and beans come standard with almost everything and there aren't really any "standouts" on the menu. Went tonight for a birthday dinner for two people - told the waitress up front that we had 7 adults and 3 kids coming, and we had 2 birthdays. She said "ok" and proceeded to seat us with 2 menus and 2 silverware. Took the drink order quickly, and we waited for the rest of the table to show. They were VERY slow to refill our drinks, and they weren't busy. Also forgot to bring kid's menus and crayons (we showed up with kids AND told them we had 3 total, it wasn't a surprise there would be children) and we had to ask SEVERAL times for crayons before we finally got them. I was never offered a refill, I constantly had to ask on my own. Terrible service practices, although the waitress was a nice girl she was pretty awful without a busy restaurant to explain it. The waitress didn't tell us until the end of the meal that they don't do anything for birthdays at all, which was disappointing since we told them when we first arrived that we had two birthdays and she said "ok!". The food was VERY good though - I heard rave reviews on the fish tacos, and my pollo de crema was amazing! If you're looking for good Mexican, go here, but not if you want good service. read more

i give the molcajete bowl a 10 on presentation and a 5 on taste. felt rather bland. Granted we did just come from a huge hike in Yosemite and we were starving but the carne asada felt too chewy and the chicken tasted a bit too salty. The rice was tasteless, the beans just ok. the mini flautas were cute but again lacking flavor. All of the drinks we ordered tasted like slurpees with a drop of tequila. This is pretty much the only Mexican restaurant we go to in Sonora any more. We've been customers since they were located up near the Junction and were so sad when that place burned down. But they are back and better than ever. Don't miss their Mole if you are a fan. Strange, but true, Bob's Special is one of my favorites...and their fish tacos are great, too! Even the salsa they bring with chips is always just the right spiciness to suit us.
