The food is very good and worth waiting for. We had a pastor burrito and a chili verde burrito. Both had lots of meat and were flavorful. They were just spicy enough. The cashier was friendly. He was busy taking orders and presenting food. The restruant itself was clean. There are a few tables and a rail for dining inside. Where the food and service earn 4 stars the bathroom brings it way down to 2. Toilet paper cannot go in the toilet. I understand septic systems are temperamental but putting waste paper in a trash can doesn't cut it. read more

One of the best Mexican food restaurants because of the food, not so much of the ambiance, but man they serve some awesome burritos and tacos. We stopped here with a party of four just for a quick bite and I ended up ordering seconds. My company ordered different kinds of burritos and we shared a nacho supreme with carne asada. The meat was tender and very flavorful. Everyone else enjoyed their burritos too. I got four kinds of tacos, asada, cabeza, tripas, and lemgua. It was outstanding. The quality, flavor, and freshness of the ingredients were impressive. Margaritas are a bit disappointing, but most menu items are reliably good. Ambiance could be better with a door that clanks in a jarring way, and line that forms though middle of the seating area. It is a taco shop, so as long as expectations aren't for more, you should expect a tasty, filling experience. read more

The shrimp burrito was by far one of the best burritos I've ever had. The line was long, but they got my food out pretty quickly still. I do agree with another review that the menu is kind of confusing and I do wish they listed what was in their burritos, otherwise incredible food and friendly service! I actually like this place, but I have one major complaint... They have the worst, most confusing menu I have ever seen. It just doesn't make sense! Someone over there needs to go look at the other one million Mexican restaurants that have menus that make sense and figure out how to put together a simple menu. I've been ordering burritos for damn near 50 years, but I have no idea how their monster burrito compares to a Sonora burrito compares to an El Rey Special compares to a NAK burrito. WTF is a NAK?!?! Last time I was there I asked the girl at the register what "NAK" stood for and she had no idea! Terrible! Oh, you want a beef or chicken burrito? There's a "beef or chicken burrito" on the menu board. But there's also a second beef or chicken burrito on the menu with a different price. Why? No idea. And there's also a separate pollo asado burrito... which is CHICKEN! And a separate carne asada burrito! You get the idea. Most confusing menu ever. El Rey, no one is impressed by your confusing 600 item menu. Get your s#it together! You actually make good food. Simplify that damn menu! Ok, rant over. read more

Just to be clear, the one missing star is for the pieces of fatty gristle found in the first couple of bites of my Carnitas burrito from my last visit. I originally reviewed this restaurant back in 2017 and only gave them 2 stars because I had a strangely negative experience with them. Back then, someone had been cooking the Carnitas with cinnamon, of all things. It ruined my tacos, and it was difficult to get past. Also, at that time, their red salsa tasted VERY weird, so that surely didn't save those poor tacos. Fast forward to 2024, and neither of those things is an issue at Taco Shop El Rey anymore. In this updated review, I will discuss the current experiences I have had when dining there. The Carnitas now tastes just as it should. Delicious, home-cooked pork flavor, usually seasoned to perfection. (On my last visit, it had been too heavily salted, but the salsa helped balance that out). And someone apparently has taken the cinnamon shaker away from the chef because in my past visits, there has been no sign of that weirdness, not in years. I don't live in the area, and I seldom have reason to be on that end of Sonora, so I feel fortunate to get there 2-3 times a year. I usually order the Carnitas or chicken in one form or another. I can now happily recommend either one. The salsa bar they offer is something I wish more Mexican food purveyors would consider. It's SO refreshing to have CHOICES! I like many of them, and I am never disappointed. They are all flavorful with varying degrees of Scoville heat. The shop owners provide everything you need to take some to your table or for take out customers. I would change only one thing. I would label the choices. I realize that's a challenge to do, but customers should be able to decide from what is available regarding spicy heat. BOTTOM LINE: Taco Shop El Rey is a small place, and there's not much in the way of ambience. If you're expecting a grand dining space, you will be disappointed. The staff are usually friendly and very helpful. For the size of the establishment, there is a good amount of seating, which seems to accommodate those who choose to stay there and dine. Take out gets a little bit difficult because people must either take up seating to wait for their order, wait outside, or risk being in the way of others who are ordering, waiting, or eating, but things seem to flow fairly nicely unless someone has an extremely large order. The food is tasty and fairly portioned for the price. If I had one thing to change about the food, it would be to suggest that during food prep, the cooks be mindful of stray bits of gristle and fat getting mixed in with the different cooked meats. It's very unpleasant to find gristle or fat in your mouth when you are trying to enjoy a flavorful meal. That said, I can now happily recommend Taco Shop El Rey as a viable and enviable contender to the other available Mexican food places in Sonora. It's both enjoyable and affordable. It's also nice to see that there's a restaurant in town that has made improvements on both their menu and their service. We're not getting a lot of that in the world these days, so it's a rare and very much appreciated treat. Time to get over to Taco Shop El Rey and enjoy something wonderful from their menu. I don't think you'll regret it. read more

Amazing food and service. Stopped to grab a bite after visiting Pinecrest Lake and was glad we did! Try the Sonora (chile relleno) burrito. So tasty and full of flavor. Carnitas torts was also a hit. We tried the birria at Taco Shop El Rey last night and it was so good! I think that I need to provide a strong warning though! If you eat this dish you might feel some tingling in your tongue as it prepares itself to finally master the art of rolling r's, you'll switch from saying "bud" to "compa", will be surprised to know the lyrics to Ella Baila Sola by Peso Pluma and will catch yourself calling your honey's "mamasota" or "papasito". My wife and I have probably enjoyed their food over ten times in the last year or so. She's a fan of their 'Day #1 Special' which is 3 crispy beef tacos with rice and beans. Crispy, homemade shells, lots of shredded beef, and a don't forget to ask for their salsa. She's enjoyed their enchiladas on occasion (both cheese and chicken) with green sauce, which are consistently good too. I like their El Rey Special Burrito which has everything a burrito should. I prefer the Carne Asada, and it is always a hearty portion. Served in a HUGE flour tortilla shell, and grilled on both sides to golden brown. Call ahead or order and wait in the car. It gets crowded inside the small dining area. You know it is good when groups of tree workers that stay at the hotel across the street keep coming in. read more

I've been to almost all of the Mexican restaurants in Sonora/Twain Harte/Columbia and this is easily my favorite. Hands down the best carnitas in the area--you don't find any of those massive globs of fat that you commonly find hidden in your carnitas meat. The San Diego style burritos are exactly that--all meat, no flavorless fillers--and tons of flavor! Their chile verde is absolutely fantastic too. In fact, we usually have to order food for the entire week since I always feel the need to order at least 5 different dishes. All of their sides are solid too--beans, rice, and especially the salsa are great. Haven't been disappointed yet. The only thing I wish they'd improve upon is the wait--it doesn't seem to matter how late I arrive to pick up the order, it always seems to take 10min longer. Having said that, it's well worth the wait. I think we come here about once a month and, given I order for 5 days at a time, that means about 20% of my meals come from this place! read more

Great food here, usually not too long of a wait. My boyfriend and I come in here rather often, and because we both have had service industry jobs are usually as polite and patient as possible. However, the other day, we went in to pick up an order and had terrible service. The girl at the front desk was horribly rude, gave us the wrong food, and gave me a dirty look when I asked how her day was going.
